How do you keep your dolls?

Dec 26, 2006

    1. My dolls have a shelf 'house'. The shelves aren't high enough for them to stand but I'm not fussed because I prefer them sitting down in chairs anyway.

    2. My doll will live on top of a bookcase. I tried to make a sort of bed for her...but it turned into a pillow, so I made her a little pillow to match and lay her head on. XD (There is no blanket as of yet).
I bought a small rug to go onto the bookcase as flooring and she has a little bag with her stuff in it waiting for her to arrive.

    3. In their boxes. I'm too paranoid something bad will happen to them if I leave them out unsupervised. :|

    4. I have four on the dining room table. Three have chairs and one is lying down. I also have two heads and a faceplate there too. It's pretty dark over there, so that's good for them. The other two (Aiden and Oliver) are on the doll sofa that is next to my human sofa. I might move it later, but I like it there. The only problem is that it is close to the windows, so I worry about opening them and leaving those two in the light for so long. I am working on bookshelf bedrooms for my Yo-SDs, but as they are multiplying faster than I expected, it could be awhile before everyone has a space to live in.

    5. I have one of those box shelf things, it has 12 boxes in it I think, and they're about 30cm by 30cm. My dolls are currently occupying 2 of the boxes. I have this feeling they're going to take over though :3

    6. With me always, ahah. The only doll I currently have, I made a canopy bed the exact size just for him to sleep in. :sweat
I always take him with me everywhere too, because you never know when there's a photo opportunity.

A new doll I'm going to buy soon will probably be the same situation, except I'll probably make him more of a cat-themed bed ((since it's a cat theme character)), and I'll probably end up taking him everywhere with me as well.

While I'm doing things, like watching television or drawing, I have a few doll chairs too that I just let him sit there and watch what I'm doing. xD I feel bad if I just let him stay in a dark room being lonely...:sweat

    7. Wow... I'm probably a horrible dolly owner then. My lot hang out on my bookshelf while I'm at Uni, and once I left Maika on a windowsill while I was getting around to doing his face-up and blushing... there was a ton of sunlight too, but I figured I wouldn't mind if he yellowed (XD) Thus the dolls pretty much live where ever I'm not able to physically occupy (I hate sitting on them). I think they work best on the shelf- it keeps them out of trouble, but still together (which I like).

    8. How do you keep your dolls? Well, as a collector I was always plagued with this problem for many years. I had them in spare bedrooms, on shelves, kept in closets etc. We all know how it goes when your a collector.
I finally got tired of having my beautiful dolls in hiding or not having a permanent home. So, I fixed the problem.
I added a doll gallery on to the house.
Now my kids have a home of their own. My friends and family like to view my collection when they come to the house. I have a room to enjoy and a place to call my own haven.
Adding a doll gallery was the best thing I ever did!

    9. holy crap that's really impressive, Manscan!

I need to do some re-arranging, but eventually my girls are going to have a shelf in my room for themselves. That's really all I can give them since I live in an apartment with roommates and a cat. Once I get my own place, I'm hoping to either have them in my studio/work room if I'm lucky enough to have one, or displayed in my living room. I spent a lot of money on my girls, no way I'm going to keep them in a closet! xD

    10. That is a LOT of glass. and a LOT of dolls! ;;;;

I generally keep my doll in his box. But I am commissioning a few artist friends for simple, basic, small display cases, just because I'd like to be able to see my doll even if I'm not playing with him. They're out of plexiglass with a stained wood base. 8I;; It's not much, but it keeps the dust off and fits in my budget until I live on my own :)

    11. Manscar, your "doll gallery" is fabulous, something I've dreamed of. I keep my dolls in my "office" as I work at home, or in their boxes, but your pictures have really inspired me to turn my office into a gallery around my computer desk.

    12. Tinazgarza that is a wonderful idea! There is nothing like surrounding yourself with things you love. As much as we all pay for our dolls it it really important that they are out for the world to see and us to appreciate.

    13. I keep mine in a glass curio cabnet.

    14. I got this big translucent plastic boxes w/ covers. I keep all of my dolls in there and the sun doesn't reach 'em where I place the box. Sometimes, when I try to sew clothing for them, they will be left on top of the box or on my working table. Sunlight doesn't reach those places and they are stable so it is safe to leave them there.

      @Manscan:
      WOW @.@

    15. Oh my Manscan, that is quite impressive.

Right now the dolls that I do have (no BJDs currently, just Pullips) are on a tall bookcase, that I wanted to convert into a doll house of sorts, but it's really not big enough. Once we buy a house I want to get a glass front cabinet that they can be displayed properly and behind the glass to remain safe and dust free.

Hopefully by then I will another BJD again, and maybe more than one.

    16. Woah...hardcore Manscan! That is so cool! XD

I'll look at your pictures and dream. <)

    17. Mine are sitting on the end of a shelf (kinda), I think they're fairly safe from the cats because there isn't any jumping room. If there isn't any room for the paws to go then they usually won't go there... Or they'll try anyway and you'll hear a huge crash as everything goes everywhere.

Anyway, I plain don't have any room to put mine anywhere else :P I'd love to get some furniture for them but I'm focusing on buying the dolls I want first, and as mentioned I'd have nowhere to put it. I do want to eventually make some strong clear plastic (lighter than glass) cases for my dolls and other collections to keep them dust free, but that won't be happening anytime soon.

    18. Mine sits in a chair that's near the foot of my bed. There's really nowhere else to put his little chair.

    19. I put my tiny away in his box and my other two I stuff them together in my closet... and also I keep them naked and bald...hahah. :sweat I'm so paranoid of yellowing, dust, wig stains and clothing staining/creasing... but geez after I look at them, it's really unpleasant seeing them naked and bald and stuffed into a closet.. poor things. T.T I'm gonna get them some clothes...I'm a terrible owner. D;

    20. My sweet dear mother built them a Doll house that takes up most of an upstairs bedroom. But at first i had a bunk bed (bed on top, couch/futon on bottom) and they had a little 'apartment' on the outstretched futon.

    21. My dolls are in their boxes in my closet to keep them safe when not being played with. I hope to get them a dust-protecting glass this year so I can keep them out without worrying about dust getting all over them. My room is so dusty, no matter how many times I clean it a week, I have no idea why.

    22. I keep my doll in closet, safe from light and dust. Moreover I can play with them easily.

    23. I keep my dolls in dust free display cases and out of any sunlight. Someday I'll get furniture and put it in the display case with them to make it more like a home XD

    24. I have a spare small room which is now my doll room. I keep all my dolls there, including their stuff (clothes, wigs, eyes, boxes, etc). My dolls are all on one big table. The table is about 2 meters long, so all my current dolls fit there. Some are standing (65+ with hooves in doll stands, some tinies standing on their own) and others are just sitting down, with some of the tinies on their lap.

    25. I don't think I could ever just keep Agatha in her box! To my way of thinking, what's the point of spending all that money on her if I'm not going to have her out and about to enjoy? Of course, I know you "box keepers" wonder what the point of buying them is if they get damaged, but hey, to each their own.

Agatha lives on my desk, either sitting on my little subwoofer which is perfect 1/3 chair height, or standing between my computer and my left speaker like she is now. I like having her there; she keeps me company while I do homework or surf the net.

    26. My two big boys lounge on the futon couch in my bedroom, and my tiny is posed on a shelf next to a neat Jack Skellington mug and little nick tacks.

    27. I don't have a special bag, or shelf for my doll to go on, so I suppose I will just keep her in my bed. I plan on cuddling the poor dear to death! :XD:

    28. I keep two of my boys in box,it can be avoided the sunshine & damp.

    29. Thankfully my room is pretty dark (my cave ;) ) and I have a great high up white shelf drilled into my wall. It's HUGE and away from light even artificial light :) That's where the kids sit!

    30. I have a space on top of my drawers where I can put my Tsuki. x3 I'm currently setting it up and ready to go so that way she has some place to be. I don't have to worry about my cats because they don't go on there to get to the window. Plus they're really good at not getting on everything.

    31. My two big girls live on a shelf in my work-room bookcase. I belong to those who are straddling the fences, on one hand I don't want to have them exposed to sun and on the other hand I truly believe in part of the point of owning them is that I can see them. So to compromise I've put up thick black curtains on my bookcase, that way when I'm not looking I can pull the curtains and know that they are safe from the sun. Though to be honest not much sun gets in to my workroom.

My tiny (a brownie) moves around a lot more. He's a bit of a purse doll so most of the time he spends in an case made for glasses. Right now though he's sitting on my sewing machine and the other day he sat by my partner's computer.

    32. I have just got my doll, I have made a bedroom for her i my room with bed, table chester drawers :3 so I have full bedroom for ehr, but in the future i'll make her a house heheh

    33. Damane lives in my, rather strange, room where there is no sunlight. She has a bed I made her so most of the time when I'm not playing with her she is in it covered up with her blankets. Otherwise she travels all over the house but I always keep her out of the sun.

    34. My dolly sits on my bedside table between two speakers XD He looks awesome there, and when it's night I put him back in his box :P The table he sits on and his box are both in parts of the room that never see light unless it's artificial XD

    35. I just started making these art boxes for my minifees. I never open the blinds so there's never any light in my room. I wanted a way to get them up off the desk because I was running out of space. I'd love to have a little rooms for them but that takes up a lot more space than I've got so instead, I went with display boxes. Each doll gets her own design and themed box, they are out of the way, but also easy to pick up and play with. So for the smaller dolls it worked out to be an excellent solution and looks very pretty! I don't know what I'd do if I had anything over 50cms though LOL.

    36. Yeah, this is exactly how I feel about it too. I've made the most of my little collection for sure! I hunted for any spare space I could find in my home, and when I found one I would build a display room there. Like, for instance, adding a shelf in front of a window between a bookcase and a TV armoire. I decorated it with a victorian window treatment as a backdrop, added overstuffed in-scale furnishings, upholstered the shelf in an oriental carpet remnant...well, you get the idea. Actually, it was so much fun, my hubby decided to help by building me a little table and designing lighting for it that actually works. It became a creative endeavor we could both enjoy together. From then on, anytime a doll would be incoming, we'd seek out a new room space for it. So the end result is that I have wonderfully creative room display spaces which add art to my home...and each one of my crew has their very own room.

    37. At night or on days when Im not home, T'betha is in her box on my desk. She comes out and perches on the couch, on my shoulder (which doesnt last long because she's SD sized and HEAVY) or on the livingroom desk in the evenings when Im home.

    38. Mine are in my glass cabinet, need to get some furniture for them, Chrom is sitting on the glass panel and Chami is kneeling on the same glass panel lol :'D

    39. Mine are kept two or three to a box sadly. I would love to display them more but my room is really small and we have a lot of problems with dust and spiders (I live out in the country by a lot of old coal mines so dust, insects and spiders are a terrible problem over here DX )
The large SD boxes are stacked up on the floor covered by the cusions they came with for easy access and one MSD box sits on my desk with my baby blanket over it (that was my mums idea :XD: ).
The loose heads and tinies share a box next to the MSD box except my Puki's who live in the dollhouse downstairs :)

    40. Sit on meh desk or my other desk lol. Im not exactly the "playing type". More of the enjoy the beauty sooo...

    41. I keep my BJD at my desk, I'm never really in my own room upstairs and the curtains always cover up the sun so he'll be allright c:

    42. i keep them in my wardrobe so they won't see the sun too much. if i want to see them, i'll have them sit inside the wardrobe, but mostly they stay inside their box (yes, 2 dolls share a box, cos i don't have enough space :/). occasionally they sit on the computer table to accompany me lol.

    43. I put them in the boxes ....=__=

    44. They sit on a bookshelf in my bedroom. Thankfully in the only spot that dosnt get any sunlight.

    45. Mine take up 3 shelves on the bookcase next to my desk. My sister painted the windows years ago, so it's the safest place for them. And I can look at them all the time.

    46. Otavi has a box that doubles as a bed. My dorm room is very small, so he spends a lot of time in the box and under my bed. When I do take him out, he spends a lot of time sitting on my desk next to my computer. He always goes back to the boxbed when I get ready to sleep, though.

At my house he has a shelf with a cushion and a curtain. It keeps the kitty out and protects him from the sun.

    47. I keep my resin dolls currently in their boxes unless I'm playing with them, but for my less delicate dolls, I dedicate a part of my bookshelf. However, I'd like to eventually get a glass cabinet with doors, so I can close it from light if I feel it's damaging the dolls.

    48. My only dollie just sits on a doll couch on my desk watching me type on my computer :) (I use my computer alot) and if i found her off her couch in a position witch could break her, i would hate whoever put her in a dangerous spot. D: (like what happened yesterday when my young cousion slept over, we were playing with dolls not BJDS and she used the couch my doll was on and my dollie was in a position looking like my cousion pulled the couch from under the couch and then made my doll fall onto my stuff which might crack her face! a few mins later i found my doll in a dangerous spot and i was pretty upset about that and told her never to leave her like that again. :( And she also messed up her wig today when she pulled something from my desk to hold, i brushed it back to her style).

    49. I emptied my shelf.. (it was hard but I managed ^^; ) and on the edge sit Kuroyami and Mephisto.. My living dead dolls lay next to them.. (they fell over and didn't saw the necesity to put them back up xD ><;; )
When Loretta (my mini) is home she will get a special place in my bed because she is so tiny ^^
Maybe I'll make a little cradle and put that one on the window sill.. with mayble little curtains and stuff xD
      I don't know..
But I would never put them back in the box.. In the beginning I used kuro's box as a bed..
But mephisto's box is now their closet xD
To bad I have a small room and a lot of stuff >< xD

    50. In my parental home, they stay in their boxes, most of the time.
If not, they're under my desk, in darkness.

In my new 'home' (close to university) I have a glass cabinet which they will be put into.
A curtain will be made around it, so I can block out the sun when I'm not home.

It would be nice to have some furniture in the cabinet, so they can sit properly, but SD furniture is gigantic.

    51. I depends where am I. Now I'm studing abroad, the dolls I let in Spain are keep in their boxes. The ones I have with me are in shelves. All together :D

    52. I keep them in their boxes to protects them from sunlight but I plan to get a proper shelf for them though

    53. Mine are in the attic room, its always closed so my cats cant get up there and its where all my doll clothes and items are too. Its good as its big enough for posing and making sets plus using my light tent. My cats dont really care about my dolls, I sometimes bring them downstairs to the front room whilst Im measuring for outfits Im making and they dont really pay attention, but I like my dolls out of the way so theyre not tripped over or bitten by cats ;)

    54. I sit them on my dresser. I wish i had a more proper place to put Juliet but for now she just sits around next to my xbox and pullips. It'd be pretty neat to have BJD sized furniture and when i'm not playing with her have her be able to lounge around on a sofa~

    55. I keep mine in her box on the top shelf of my closet because I'm worried someone in my house might damage her while I'm away. I don't think it's just me being paranoid either because it's happened many times before. My mom has a history of moving, breaking, and throwing out certain things without telling me.

I'm also worried about sun exposure.

I'd like to buy my dolls a glass cabinet when I have more dolls (and more space).

    56. I've got a shelf next to my bed. Johnny and Alistair sit there when I'm not wagging them around the house.

    57. I have one on order that will get here in about a week. She'll go in one of those glass cases once I have dressed and loaded.

    58. while I'm at work my dollies set on my bed and my computer desk and in their chairs on a table next to my bed but when I'm home they go where ever I go which is on my computer desk right next to me cause I spend a lot of time there.

    59. A shelf. I hope to get a glass cabinet someday, that'd be very nice.

    60. The majority of mine live in the living-room and the spare bedroom we're running short of space for them however:

We're both collectors (of all sorts of things) so there's a limit to how much space the dolls can be allowed to spread into. The action figures in the cabinet to the right of the picture are my husband's (as are three of the BJDs, and all the military figures in the glass-fronted cabinet)... the rest of the house is even fuller than this corner.
