How do you cope with the waiting?

Sep 6, 2009

    1. I usually put my attention towards other things, like school, dancing, movie watching, and the like. But once I get the tracking number for the doll, I am constantly refreshing the page like a crazy person. >w<

    8. What I do is try not to think about it. I find things to distract me like watching television series, or knitting or studying. Thankfully since I work I have a LOT OF distractions.

I think if ever I just set myself a timer around the time that the doll SHOULD come, so I can check if the company is delayed. That way am not being too lenient or several months have passed and my doll isn't here yet LOL.

    9. If I have a doll I'm waiting for. I turn my attentions to the dolls I have, as well as the other hobbies. I do postcrossing which is another waiting hobby, as well as my penpals. But I also play video games, MMORPG such as The Old Republic and World of Warcraft so I try and level my characters. Some of the stuff I do passes the time nicely.

    11. This is how I coped with waiting the first time;

Me and my friend stole pebbles from the backyard, gathered toiletpaper, cloth and empty cans of energy drink, then we made mannequins and got to making some clothes~
... Mary and Suzy are still with us to this day, as you could see up there.

    13. I'm usually distracted with school work *_*. Apart from that, I will deal with waiting by further developing the doll's character and writing his/her story. Or...I will just sit in a corner looking out the window every few seconds slowly going insane while I wait haha.

    16. I'm waiting for a doll for the first time now. I didn't think it would really be any kind of big deal whatsoever, but I find my mind wandering about it when I'm in bed and can't sleep sometimes now. D'oh!

This is going to be difficult. I'll have to use some of the tactics you all have discussed here! Wish me luck ;)

    17. I may not have a doll on the way (yet!) but there is still the waiting time of my mom deciding if she's going to get the doll of not, my dad has to wait on his paycheck (a Dal Ciel is coming out of this one), and I'm trying to confirm an order from a person on tumblr.

So what do I do? Continue to look at and admire dolls, go on tumblr, watch videos on Youtube... I continue my daily life! Honestly, if I kept thinking about the dolls I wanted to get/close to getting, I'd go crazy too! (Though I think I already am... Haha!) Getting to clean my room in prep. for them is a great way to both keep them on my mind, clean my room, provide space for the incoming doll, and still stay -somewhat- sane! :D

    18. I look at pictures of dolls and watch box openings. Sometimes I like to play games or go to forums that have nothing to do with BJDs just to get my mind off of my dolls for a while. Since I joined DOA I would probably hang around the waiting room threads the next time I order a doll.

    21. Mostly, for long waits I try to forget about it and take care of important life and work stuff.

I also make things for the doll, like clothes or special props they will need. I waited nearly ten months for a head, and while I waited I got him a body, and made him an outfit, and taught myself embroidery and then embroidered his shirt and his vest. Now he's here, and he already has an outfit ready, and I have a new skill.

      ~Daydreaming about her character
      ~Planning her welcome party
~Hand sewing her some casual clothes

    28. I just preordered my first doll too!! Whoo-hoo! The wait is tough! My BJD will take 4 to 7 months!! What??!! 7 months... OMG!!! It's torture! The only thing that helps me (a little) is to look at clothes and accessories. As a first time BJD buyer I was shocked at the wait time. But she is so cute, she's worth the wait!!

    29. I've had two shipping notices within a few days of each other, so I now have three dolls and a body coming to me and the wait is pretty awful.

The body is in England and customs held onto it for three days which was pretty much torture...I have no idea if I've been charged customs fees, I will just have to wait and see.

Mostly I'm freaking out and trying not to drive my fiance mad with my excitement.

    30. I don't cope with waiting, I suffer through it. I am saving and therefore I am waiting to wait for when I can order my doll. This is the worst part ever. I can't wait until I am actually waiting for her to come (hope that made sense)

In the meantime I spend hours on DoA, Youtube videos, clothing shopping, props shopping and coming up with a back story.

    33. I generally look at or make clothing for the new doll, pick out a wig and eyes and start planning things like her personality or faceup. After those things are done I will play with my dolls at home, maybe redress them in something new or give them a different look.

    35. I'm not a patient creature... Even after years of ordering dolls, I still grumble over the wait times... But it's definitely easier to handle a long wait when you already have dolls to play with. Waiting for my first, without any others to distract me? THAT was torture.

    36. I am extremely impatient, too. Millie isn't here yet. She may not get here until MARCH... I've made her a bedroom (she's only 6 inches) including a bed, a bookshelf, an end table, a couch and a toybox. I love making miniatures and each piece of furniture takes me a few days and I wait a few days in between pieces. I pretty much expect to have an entire bedroom (dresser, fireplace, a full toybox full of toys...) and a kitchen by the time she finally gets here :sweat I hope I don't run out of things to do and get bored by the time she's here!

    37. I try not to think about the doll. I hate long waits because sometimes I'm so apathetic by the time I get the shipping notice that I regret ordering the doll. Once I get the shipping notice, I look up owner pics and try to get excited, but it doesn't always work:(. I had 3+ month wait for some Luts LE Zuzu Delfs recently, and felt practically nothing when I finally got them, although the dolls were lovely. I'd rather buy from the MP to avoid the waits!

Someone might have said this already (I didn't read the whole thread), but I'd like to add that I think it's a bit inconsiderate when people repeatedly email the company about the status of their order, unless the estimated ship time was only a few weeks and it's near the 45 day mark and you're considering a Paypal dispute. Or if you're moving or going on a long vacation and really need to know when the doll should ship. I've known people who contact the company over and over again about the shipping date, and I feel like they're often just wasting the company's time. Plus the companies sometimes give inaccurate info when asked, which gets the buyer's hopes up and leads to disappointment when they ship later than their estimate.

    39. I'm currently waiting on one big doll (in month 4 of waiting now) and I just ordered a few pet dolls this evening. At first I would obsessively look at pictures of other people's dolls and especially box openings (terrible to do when you're waiting btw) and quickly realized that made me more impatient.

Now I've got myself occupied by window shopping (and some actual shopping) for things for my dolls (clothes, furniture, accessories mostly) and finally working through the backlog of video games I haven't touched since I bought them. I'm currently working through the original Xenoblade Chronicles.

(Did I have enough stuff in parenthesis in that post?)

    41. I sew for my other bjds and surf the web in case I discover a bjd sculptor I've never come across. :XD: I check the waiting room and my mail box too many times.

I am presently learning how to use my sewing machine, and adapting the clothes templates to it. I'm quite staggered by how easy and fast everything has become. I have more time to spend on designing better looking clothes for my bjds. :3nodding: and I can now provide for a potentially bigger crew :sneaky.

    45. I look up as many owner pics I can find, just generally increasing my miGHTY NEED for the doll to arrive. Then I look up wigs, eyes, clothing styles, etc. for the new doll, buy stuff if possible, and when the expected delivery date neares, I stalk the tracking site/any place where I can get any news until the doll finally arrives. Then cry because of customs fees.

    49. For the first little lady, I ordered a wig and eyes in the waiting stage. I also crafted a sort of pattern base blueprint so I could make clothes for her.... Then I ended up buying a wig for the boy I had yet to order... then his eyes...
We talked about her everyday, planned photo shoots and new clothes and made clothes and collected props from other dolls that might work.
Then she shipped... and we don't have a door bell :'(
We had to wait even longer and worry about her safety at the local post office!

Now we are waiting for the boy, but we've bought all his wigs and eyes already! I guess I'll have to start his pattern blueprint and make some clothes... I still have a rough month to wait... minimum.

    50. I'm in the process of playing the waiting game, myself... I just officially ordered my girl tonight, but I've been lingering on it for a week or so. I work in a fabric store (I'm a seamstress) and my coping method seems to be wandering around when we're slow and designing doll clothes in my head. In my spare time at home, I keep staring at pictures of her and looking up shoes, all kinds of tutorials, and just blankly staring at things on here. I'm not sure how I'm going to hold up until she's paid off and shipped!

I'm actually waiting for a doll now and even though it's not my first - I'm still super excited! But I think waiting (even though it can get annoying) is part of the charm. I keep watching unboxing videos on youtube and pictures here on forum. I try to sew clothes for the new doll if I can or do something for dolls I already own. Now I decided to re-do all the face ups so when the new girl comes, I can focus on her. :)
Also keep listening to Kerlis songs because I have done that ever since I got my first doll on 2008 and it's kind of a tradition now.

    60. I remember the agonizing torture it was waiting for my first doll to arrive by mail. Even though I bought her secondhand, I had to do a layaway plan and then waiting for her to come in the mail... It was horrible! Every passing day I was so anxious and excited.

Since my first though I've started to fall into a routine, and I've noticed some things with my dolls.
-If I tell more than one or two people about the doll I am expecting, something always happens to it. Either it never gets sent and I have to get a refund due to lazy secondhand sellers (seriously I've waited over 3 months for them to send my doll and they just can't be bothered), or my post office (rated just below 2 stars on Google reviews) loses the package and refuses me my insurance.

So due to this I will now only tell one or two people (my girlfriend, who I now have my dolls shipped to since her post office is far better) and my mom xD

So wait times for me are even more hellish; I can't talk about them really with anybody, so I have to keep it to quiet researching on my end, on days when I just can't put the doll out of my mind.

I'll research what country and legend they're from (their characters are always based around lesser known characters in mythology from around the world). Then it goes to naming, and sometimes drawing concept art of how I might want them to look faceup-wise after more research on their origin culture. Then it's off to figure out their personality, and their clothing style.

I no longer buy clothes in advance for dolls either, but at this stage of the game I have clothes for a variety of sizes because of the earlier mentioned reasons (for dolls that I never received) so i have a good amount of extra clothes saved up just so they won't be naked, bald or eyeless when they arrive. c:
