How do you cope with the waiting?

Sep 6, 2009

    1. Hey all! I recently ordered my first bjd (squee!:fangirl:), and I'm about bursting with excitment for him to get here! The only problem? I ordered him ... 5 days ago *_*
Knowing this, I have 6 - 8 weeks left until i actually get him, and I'm scared I may just go insane! So, I was wondering, how do you cope with the awful waiting time? Is there any specific activity you do, do you focus on the doll and just wait it out, or try to get it out of your mind? I'm interested to hear how fellow DoA-ers cope!

(P.S., sorry if a thread like this already exists, please delete if so!)

    2. As silly as this may sound, I tell myself I have to 'earn' the doll by getting enough work done before it will arrive. I suppose it's sort of a karmic idea, though I can't say I really believe in it. But it does sort of help motivate me to get things done.

    4. I'm having that problem right now :(
I've pretty much just obsessing over what to get for her, like wig, ect. Also I've been looking over and over at pictures of her done up differently, trying to decide what faceup and all.

It's painful. But I almost like it. When I get her imma spaz

    5. I do my best to act as if there wasn't anything ordered at all lol, but yeah. It doesn't really work all that well; I'm babbling about my incoming tiny again now, aren't I? x D
The first few days are almost the worst.. but it gets SO MUCH WORSE again when yer package is in shipping! Anyway. My advice:
      1. Try to live like you did before ordering
      2. Since it fails, figure out what clothes/wigs/eyes etc. to get.
      3. With a BJD size new to you... make a plush toy with the same measurements.
      4. Measure it to everything. (I did this just about all my waking time when I still had this teensy metallic measuring tape! I was pretty broken to lose it one day X_x; )
And of course, if you happen to have other dolls, try to spoil them rotten in the meantime. Then you can't feel bad for squeeing over the newcomer all day and 'forgetting the others'? : D

But really. I'm a bad waiter (er, is that an actual word? xD ) too~

    7. Ah, so I'm not the only one with this problem; I think I'm driving my parents insane.
noename and sinlaean, I know what you mean! I've already ordered an outfit for my doll, who isn't even due for two months (oh wow, did I just sound like a pregnant lady there? o__O)
And thanks for the advice, all! (I hope it works. Otherwise...it will be very hard to concentrate on other things. Like, say, school :sweat). But I know when I get him, I'll freak out (who wouldn't?), so that will make it all okay!

    12. I ordered my second doll on the 18th of August...and I'm still waiting for her to ship. (According to bobobie's email I should be expecting a notice in the next few days..) I'm a horribly impatient person by nature and always want instant gratification, so waiting on dolls is especially hard xD This is what I usually do:

      1) Pretend I didn't order a doll, try to forget. (this always fails)

      2) Keep myself busy/Think of other things... (yeah, right.)

      3) Go on a baby naming site and create a list of names I like...

      4) Search for different companies clothes that will fit.

      5) Sew my own clothes and pray that they will fit.

      6) Email the company

      7) Quadruple+ check my order status.

      8) Buy things so they're not naked/bald in their first few weeks home.

      9) Freak out.

I'm in the freaking out stage right now...but I've done all the other things in the past xD;; I can't wait till my little girl gets here~ *squees*

The waiting sure kills, had been waiting for more than a month now for my wigs to reach me.
But I'm sure the wait is worth it ;)
So just have to be patient and continue to scout more for items that you want for your doll :D

    15. The wait for my first didn't really get bad till near the end. I found that shopping for little things to get ready for her arrival helped a bit. I got her some small things first, shirts, pants, wig, ect a little bit at a time, and that seemed to help. Otherwise, I keep myself busy with other things. I DON'T suggest looking at owner photos...it becomes like an obsession XD

    17. I usually am very patient, except when I'm waiting for any packages that I order. If usually about an order that takes a week to arrive, I'm anxious, so waiting for this doll is too much. I think I been nagging everyone around me because of the doll. Meanwhile I made myself busy by making her house (just need to paint the bottom), find patterns do make dresses, and try to not think how long I need to wait.
I waited 4 weeks, and need to wait another 4.

    18. With my little human and his Looking Glass Reflection just bought (Soom Beyla & Bygg), I've been listening to "their" playlist on my Ipod, looking for wigs, clothes, and shoes (for Andromeda).

It's driving me absolutely batty already.

The best thing to do for a wait is to (I know this is hard) sorta forget about them, but keep up with the website for shipping and things.

It's the only way I dealt with waiting for Sadie to get home (DoI Kalix) and that was a 4 month wait...

I can only imagine how long it's gonna take for 'Ciel and Andromeda to get home *dies*

Long as you keep yourself occupied you'll find yourself not even thinking about waiting. Well that and us British are used to waiting... ages.

    22. I'm a very anxious person... and it doesn't help that our postal service is just awful. I don't cope with the waiting: let's say I'd rather suffer because of it. To be honest, I didn't have to wait that long because I ordered my doll (well, doll body) from a distributor that had it in stock. It shipped next day after I placed my order, and I spent the next few days anxiously thinking about it, checking its status online via the tracking number and dreading it was being mishandled by the staff either at the airport or customs (something that had happened to me before)... It turned out that it arrived in four days, but customs took four more days to send a notification so I could pick it up. In the meantime, I even had nightmares about my doll being lost or damaged.

After a couple of months I decided to order another head the company had just released, and now that was a wait, even if not a very long one. It took 6 weeks, more or less, and this time I was sort of prepared to cope with the waiting... but only because I had lots of things to keep myself busy with (there was university and the end of the term for starters). Otherwise... it'd have been six weeks of long, excruciating pain to bear...

    24. Waiting is actually not that hard for me. Time goes by so fast when you work constantly =_=
I did once feel like the waiting was forever, so I started buying a lot (too many) of other things. I forgot about the waiting because I received a package pretty much every week until the doll arrived.
I'll never do that again though. Too exspensive.

    25. I'm not a good waiter. (pun intended) When I waiting for my doll, I thought 2 weeks was forever. Then I found out that some people wait for months. Now that I have a doll and it fits with my other fun hobbies, when I order a second one, I might be more patient....nah, probably not. They are just so much fun.

    26. Well....

Way back when folks first started learning about this hobby the ways to get dolls were very VERY limited.... the average waiting time for something was around five to six months, sometimes even a year.

For me waiting isn't a big deal. I actually enjoy the anticipation of waiting for my dolly to arrive :) I'll make sure to amass a lil pile of clothing, wigs, eyes and whatever little trinkets my new doll might like while I'm waiting for them to get to me. I guess I've trained myself to not even think about the waiting time as a negative.

So I suppose I cope with the waiting by thinking about all the lovely things I'll be able to do with my dolly once they arrive ^_^

    28. When I buy a doll, I'll prepare for it by buying clothes, shoes, eyes, wigs, etc. Having little things come in the mail makes the time go by faster.

I also love posting in the Waiting threads. In fact, I really like that part about ordering a doll and being part of the doll community in that way.

I guess all I can do is look at stuff that I'll want to get him... but then that might make ya want your soon to come even sooner which will make it feel like forever! Sorry that didn't make much sense haha, I hope you get some awesome advice on how to wait! From what I've read some of these look like good ideas to try out.

    30. I just ordered 2 mini fees a couple of weeks ago. It says it normally takes 40 days, but with the event and all I know it could be longer. I look at their pictures all the time, and plan things I want to do with them when they arrive. I also shop around for clothes and shoes and stuff for them so that they will have things waiting for them, and I plan things I want to make for them. Other than that, I just impatiently wait. And when I see that they have shipped, I will obsessively track them until the day I know they will arrive. Then I will sit in my living room and freak out all morning until they come! :P That's what I usually do when waiting for a doll to come.

    34. I'm a spendaholic so I "prepare" for the doll's arrival by ..yes, you guessed it: spending more money! I try to have wigs, eyes and at least one complete outfit ready for it. The smaller items usually always come in before the doll (depending on how/where you order wigs). Then I just kind of try to keep it out of my mind and I really agree with Sianserais in telling myself to keep working for it. It keeps me preoccupied for one thing.

    40. Ahh I see your ecitement! My first boy is comming in December >W< Congratulations!
I have no idea how I've coped with waiting.(I'm magical~) I've just gone on with my everyday life and once in a while (more like a couple times a week XD) look at pictures and clothes and eyes and shoes and jewlery.....haha. Waiting is half of the fun even if it is torchore XP

Try just doing what you nomally do. Maybe even try to plan more things to do to entertain/diatract you. Those six weeks will fly by faster if you just let it go a tad. BUTTT I do admit I have been on DoA more than I should be. This site has gotten me more excited. It has been helpful to do as much reasearch as possible on here so you know what to look out for. You'd be suprised what you learn.

    42. I don't wait well, I can't even wait paitiently for a bus!!! I try not to buy anything that requires months of waiting or the OCD kicks in!

I have bought one new doll from DDE and it came in a week and there is dealer in the uk who has some dolls in stock and I actually went to her house and bought supposedly one doll but came away with two....

I have a doll on oreder from sleeping elf and will pick that up at a doll fair later this month , and others I have bought second hand and they don't ake very long to come as they are already made! I don't think I could wait for months for a doll even short waits have me checking the tracking info twice a day.

you collectors that wait for half ayear for that special doll have my utmost respect. I am a doll junky and although I buy and don't have to wait so long I do buy carefully and spend time doing the research for what I want in my collection. I always get my doll....

Well, that's how it was with Sanyu. I'm wondering how bad it's going to be when I order Gael soon. I'll let you know if I come up with any coping techniques that don't involve hanging upside down from the couch. Like playing Kingdom Hearts. That helps. Me, at least. >.>

    52. I'm ordering a Pukipuki sugar soon.....What do I do to pass time waiting on him?

Find inexpensive items for it! I take the measurements and make crafts for it, like fimo "mini" food and orgami (which I'm not good at, at all!)

I also find clothes in cheap "lots" on ebay. Puki fit into Tommy and Brats brand clothes, so I'm able to find lots of cute stuff for less money than if I spent it on clothes in an actual store. I'm also trying to find scraps of cloth and recycle old clothes to make my own, handsewn clothes for it.

I guess I kinda splurge on my incoming doll, but only if it's in an offordable way! :sweat

    54. Surprisingly the easiest wait was for Atrus, who took 2 months. All of my others have either been only a few days. But when I ordered Atrus I told myself it was going to be a 3 month wait, DOD was really backed up at the time, and it was possible that I would have waited that long. I just chilled and didn't think about it, and didn't expect him to come sooner than what I'd originally told myself. So when he shipped "early", it was awesome! I seem to do better if I KNOW its going to be a long time.

However, I also buy custom corsets, and those take 6-8 weeks during the low season, so waiting is not entirely foreign to me. It doesn't make it easier or anything, but I know what to expect, which helps, I suppose.

I try to get everything for my doll so when it arrives it doesn't have to sit around naked and bald. That helps to ease the waiting pains. However, this time I'm waiting for group orders and custom clothes, and that takes time too! So I'm ending up doing more and more waiting. I try to stay busy, working hard to earn all the money to pay for my purchases! Luckily this next month is very busy for me, so I won't have as much time to brood.

    56. I don't cope with waiting >.<
I hate waiting and even only one month is way to long for me right now. Have a bunch of things I'm waiting on for the moment, and all are taking so long time! I'm trying not to check the status every day, but really, they days are so long and waiting is a pain. Sometimes it just flies by, but other times it's torture.

    57. For me, the wait is actually fairly easy...since I know that it's going to take a few months, I kind of "forget" after a week or so of ordering. I do spend a lot of time browsing owners' pictures of that particular doll though :sweat It's when I know the bjd will arrive within a few days that I start being all obsessed and checking the tracking whenever I can

    58. i got this problem resolved by ordering in one of the most busies times of the year - exam, end of term time, when i have so much work to do for university, that i try to finish it all, and time goes by really fast, + i dont have that much time to think about her coming.
i do check the order status quite often ,and its getting more often since i had in the beginning... say exponentially? yeah... the problem with ordering during now is that not only am i busy, but Luts as well... i might end up waiting even longer....

edit: i kind of enjoy this tingling feeling of "OMG I CANT WAIIT!!!" for the whole month... and then the excitedness level when the doll arrives is at a point of explosion... constrant lost lasting explosions...
the time of wait makes them so much more special though... imagine not having to wait at al..

    59. I thought I was a patient person until BJDs. I have discovered that when it comes to these dolls, that I have the patience of a 5 year old. To make it seem not as bad, I prepare for the doll. I look for eyes, wig, shoes, furniture and props. All of my dolls have tea sets and furniture appropriate to their size. I always try to have at least one item of clothing and patterns or fabric so I can make additional items. Preparing for my dolls seems to make the waiting a little more bearable.:)

    60. When I ordered my first a month or so ago, I allowed my self to go mental and be very excited for a day, then i got back on with life, uni and my other hobbies.
      I have spent alot of time looking at outfits, shoes and suchlike (ordering a full set means I avoid the whole sitting around naked and bald situation), looking up sewing patterns and methods of scaling them down, I looked up a few others I was thinking of saving for, I started this next round of cosplays, I sold some stuff for some doll funds;
I just genrealy went on with life.

The most effective distraction was by far my show on uni radio; having to plan a playlist (and carefully check 20 songs 3 times for swears) and show plan to fill 2 hours every week by yourself really eats time and doesn't allow for doll distractions.

Its nice to have that thought of the doll in the back of my mind, but I made sure it wasn't the only thing going on.
