@Ipledreamer Oooooh! I can’t wait to see how this turns out! My own horse project is still stalled, as I can’t justify buying more polyfil when an unopened 10lb box awaits me at my parents’ place in the states. I may not see them again until midsummer. What a facepalm moment when I realized what I’d done. The horse is bumping around my craft room totally in the way at all times as a constant reminder.
@Ipledreamer, I think I am wrong, in pieces, it just looked so big, but this picture is supporting what I see in your photo, sorry!!!
@IngieBee: Oh, but that's totally fine. After all, horses come in all sizes. I just wanted to go with a rather "average" horse size for the big guys here. We are so used to horses who would be considered rather ponies for all kinds of dolls. Of course it is a matter of space and where to keep them, but if you want not only good-looking pictures (here you can do a lot with optical tricks - perspective, distances, detail shots, etc.), but also look good in reality, you have to go the route of a somewhat larger and particularly taller horse. We have to make them ourselves. If I look at your picture, it looks as if again my horsie might be rather again a bit short. Oh well...then he will be another Iberian. I prefer these anyways, and there a height of 1,60 m to a 1,80 m man is normal.
Oh YAY, I'm glad to see that someone is 3D printing a large horse! I can't wait to see what it'll look like when you're done, I want one for my 60cm boys! Ryu
@Ipledreamer , I hope it'll turn out perfect and can't wait to see it assembled!!! This is really exciting to watch!!
When it's done...well...that may well take another month, particularly the gigantic parts. Additionally, my dear daughter is printing her own, smaller version of that same horse (for some well-known, albeit off-topic dolls). Hers is just 1/6, there it prints much faster. I will show how when something important happens. I will not make something like a WIP though.
Ipledreamer - your progress pictures are awesome!! Keep posting them please! I wish I could have a massive horse too... but no where to put it, so I will live through your photos.
@Ipledreamer you are doing something I can only wish my machine could handle- I have a small resin 3d printer, but we're going to size up soon. if your horse works out I may be next in line to follow your example
When horsie is put all together and I see everything works, I will make sure to upload the changes (mobile ears, tailpiece for real hair application, mane parts for hair application, customized hooves) to thingiverse. Though I think that it really only works for 1/2.5 or 1/3 horses. Maybe (big maybe) for 1/4 horses.
I had to reorder filament. Funny thing: similar problem as when ordering BJD parts, which are from the same company, but ordered at different times. That stuff also varies from batch to batch. The one I got now is clearly lighter/a tad pinker. So there will be some color variation within the body parts. Oh well, I can live with that. I want to paint him anyways, so it is just important that the filament beneath somewhat matches the colour used. Right now, the chest part is printing, Four parts...ugh. All the separations for the rest is also done so far. You clearly need a really capable computer for that kind of stuff.
[QUOTE =“ sophie,post:1113295,member:6020”]嗨,大家好 我在哪里可以买到合适的模型马 SD13尺寸的玩偶??我想避免购买 通过互联网。你知道任何一家商店 随身携带一个?我已经尝试过toysRus,但他们没有一个。 预先感谢。[/ QUOTE] I have seen this
I am sorry, I cannot read this. Can anybody please translate it into English? Well, I printed out the final part of the horse's neck. I was clever enough to print the pieces in such a way that the part is checkered: That is no biggie, as I will paint the whole horse anyways.
@Ipledreamer , Is it hard to sand those? Maybe a thin putty coating would help? Gosh it's really getting exciting! What type of primer/paint do you plan on using?
When the model glue has fully dried, my husband suggested to mill a groove along the seamlines. As I also have 3d printing pen (yes, I had to have one of those as well), I can then fill in this groove with PLA filament. This will result in some type of plastic welding, which will strengthen these weak spots a bit more. After all, I am afraid that I will have to use really strong elastic to avoid sagging of the middle part. For a primer I think I will use some clear, matte hardware store stuff I also use for faceups?
There is always also wiring??? For the middle, or, depending on size, a wood dowel? You might need a primer first for paint to stick, but I have no idea about that plastic and how well it takes to paint. Might want to experiment He's going to be the coolest horse ever!!!
Well, I do not sand the overall surface, as due to 3D-printing, it has some grip to it. What my husband suggested: when the model glue is fully dry, I will make a very small groove along the seams, to make them little bit deepr and wider. This groove will be filled with PLA coming out of a 3D printing pen (yes, I had to have one of those as well). That way, some kind of welding is achieved. When that is done, I will have to sand the welding marks. PLA itself is pretty soft, but you have to be careful not trying to use too much torque on the Dremel. When the torque is too high, the material will just melt and create some nasty plastic, which has to be sanded again. You really don't want that. All of that is theory by now. I think I will grab some trash PLA pieces and try it first there. Just to see if it a) works at all and b) if you get really and kind of advantage.
You mean a wood dowel through the body? I do not want to do that, as the body is jointed. For a support, it would also not be ideal. I might have to come up with something adjustable, to accomodate for jumping and rearing poses (if it can do that, I do not know yet). But let's not take one step ahead of another. I really have to concentrate at what I am doing right now. Otherwise, this won't get finished (and I am famous for that).
Here you can see the full horse in a smaller size: Looks nice, but sadly there are several constructional issues: a) I had to install with my 3D-Pen several stop spots at hips and knees. Otherwise, it would buckle permanently (we know that problem, don't we?). b) The construction of the hindlegs looks nice, but as it is only attached by elastics to the center, there is a serious downfall. The back center shows a clear tendency of sagging. Ergo: No way a big BJD can sit on the horse as-is. I have to do some serious surgery of the horse's derriere in Blender. I will also still enlarge the hooves and lift the last section of the neck by adding some material. That way, the whole neck will lift a bit. I think it looks a bit too short for the massive body. On a more positive note, here are picture of the head and neck, including the jointed ears:
Maybe its because I'm looking on a desktop, but I cannot see your pics, @Ipledreamer. Otherwise, it sounds like you're doing pretty well so far. Ryu
I don't know what my desktop did, but now the pics are showing up. Your horse looks pretty darn cool! How big is this one, it looks like it could hold a 1/4th BJD. Ryu
The white one is about the size of a Breyer horse. That means, much too small for an MSD. The larger one, which will become a golden dun, will hopefully be tall enough for a 70 cm doll.
The horse is AMAZING! I think I meant a wood dowel if a heavy wire wouldn't work. Would sanding to smooth some of the joints be do-able? I don't think they're bad myself, is that what you were talking about wanting to fix?
No, with 3D-printed pieces you have to be super careful with sanding. It is not full material like resin (there sanding is no problem). With 3D printed parts, only the surface is solid. The rest is infill, which means the inside is a funny pattern stabilizing the whole thing (you can at 100 %, but then parts get really heavy). So if you sand too much, the pattern will show. But I have to put together the big parts, because a 3D printer can only print certain dimensions. So the very big parts (out of which the body is composed) have to be split, printed in parts, and then glued together again. So there are seams, which are very visible. And I think it will look much better if these are filled in with something - ideally with the same filament as the stuff out which they are printed. This is what I do with my 3D pen (it is a 3Dissimo, which has several bits similar to a Dremel). And no, you do not want to smooth the joints. They are much more slippery than resin joints, so I will rather suede them. To be honest, if a nice, well-constructed resin BJD horse for 70cm guys existed...oh well, I think I would spend the money (and I am sorry, I know that there was Domuya Nightmare. Not my cup of tea).
After seeing this, I’m now wanting a large horse myself, and I don’t have an SD. @Ipledreamer thank you for sharing your process. Maybe you could do a project journal? Just a suggestion, no pressure. I’d really like to see your horse and what you do to fix the issues you come across while making it. I love your project journals! So informative!
You are making me want a 3d printer @Ipledreamer , LOL. That's so interesting , you are teaching me a lot! Thank you for sharing your project with us!
@kurogane: Maybe I should have started a project journal from the very beginning of this project... Regarding the large horse: if you have room for it, it can be a lot of fun. Not that I want you to keep you from it, but I highly suggest that you wait until mine is finished. Just to know what it takes to function (because the original one has no chance of standing on its feet in its original form). I am doing some serious modding. @IngieBee: Haha, that was really not my intention! Such a device is really a lot of fun. However, there is a definite learning curve. We took the rather safe route and got a tried and tested device. And still, there were some hiccups here and there, but we successfully overcame these. And if you really want to create or even be able alter to things to fit our dolls, it is essential to learn some kind of software. That was and is still hard for me. E.g. I modded the hip part. But I have no clue whether the horse's thighs still fit. Blender has so much stuff going on I just don't need (e.g. the animating part). But it is free, so I am okay with it. If you do buy one, I am curious what you create with it! I created a WIP thread: /threads/another-really-big-horse.824679/
LOL, @Ipledreamer , I started in Blender back around 2002 or so, but then had babies, a job and life, so I've not kept up very well. I'll use it for stuff now and then, and right now, I have my whole family working on making a youtube show, staring my dolls, and only my husband is a writer, and knows anything. The rest of us are woefully bad actors and I'm a bad photographer. But I've been building a set to take green screen photos, with props and now i'm working on my stage in Blender where I will hopefully be able to place my characters. We want to get the first series of shows finished by end of summer, when the kids all go back to college. I can't quit, though, as it was my idea so I can teach my family to "just do it" LOL
@IngieBee: wow, that sounds so cool! Now I am curious how that show turns out. Maybe you need a horsie in it?
I forgot more than I've ever learned about Blender at this point. I've been doing tutorials, and it's like a whole different program! Yah, I am determined to make this happen, but lots of hard work ahead. Tomorrow I'll be messing around undoubtedly, as I'm having lunch with my sister, as we do every week, and I usually hang around after for several hours, LOL. But yah, today I finished my green screen setup completely, and now have to work on a few props. And then I think I better make a story board. Ugh, so nervous about this endeavor though I've said many times to everyone, it doesn't matter if we fail and it sucks, only that we do it
That's the way! If you are aware that any time you start out for something new, there is always a chance of failure. You can cry about it, or take it as a learning curve. Yesterday I tweaked the butt part and the back thigh again and added some stops. I will print out in small scale to see whether and how it works. Admittedly a lot of plastic is waisted. But prototyping, which I am doing here, is never easy.
@IngieBee Please tell me you're documenting this somewhere! I would love to see how it goes! I am trying to get up the nerve to start a Youtube crafting channel, but I haven't managed to start yet. @Ipledreamer This project is amazing and you're amazing. Keep working and keep us informed!
I feel so deeply honoured, @thessalyrose! Well, the modded thigh/butt connection is printed. It looks like this: Even if this is the little horse I printed for my daughter, it will be basically the same for the big guy. Now we will do one more thing to the butt: my husband had the brilliant idea of somehow adding something like a separate guide for the elastic. The point engages really well, but the elastic as the second anchoring point is not as steady as I hoped for. So he did a quick construction (he is already really good at that) and I will try that. For the big guy, the chest is still printing. We are at part 6 of eight parts. Well, no use rushing the stuff.
Oh man, it's suddenly so hot here, the wind has blown out of me! This will get done but I see it will take a lot longer than I initially thought.
Has there been any updates or new sellers of horses for 1/3 scale? Looking for two horses for my Feeple60 boy and girl.
Unless you make your own horse, the only one that's close to being big enough is the My Twinn horse. There is the option, though, of thrifting a rocking horse, if you find a realistic one that you can remake??
Yes! Since I posted, in my research the MyTwinn horse was a great option but also the horses that younger kids can ride and rocking horses. It might not be too hard to mod and remove the "rocking" part of it.
I tried to mod battat horse, it had perfect height for msd and maybe for ~50sm dolls. Horse is quite tall for ~40sm doll. Now i have... something looking like horse after some years of tries and fails To have just horse statue was incredibly boring, so i separated neck+head and added 'kinda-joint' to make head move. There were some technical mistakes, i fixed them somehow and now all system is quite awkward inside although it's looking quite good)) Spoiler: More photos ... More photos are in my instagram, but they are mostly technical: 1. Login • Instagram 2. Login • Instagram 3. Login • Instagram ...
@Xaski Your work is impressive! And aren't we all kind of awkward on the inside? I wouldn't worry about it.
Thank you. Work is still not done completely, now i need to make some satisfactory horse equipment. The issue is that i've never held in hand real 'horse things'. On the other side I also didn’t see many live horses, but this one looks like a horse without a doubt
I recently came across a TaoBao BJD shop (Lucent Star BJD). Please remove if links aren't allowed. https://shop225336771.taobao.com/ What are people's thoughts on this horse here? Looks like Soom dolls on their backs too
Could you post screenshot please? Product pages are not opening, maybe it's requiring registration (?) Looks like there is cool bird for SD too)
recommend selecting a picture without any dolls in it, just in case. or ask the mods before posting it. i sort of really hope that shop is ok -the swords are cool too. moar horses please LOL @Xaski - thanks for sharing your mod, looking good! the english saddles that came with those horses weren't too bad, mostly the stirrups were out of scale, in case that helps a little. p.s. @LottiePop - to post a link, use the link button (looks like a chain) next to the font button above where you type a reply, while having a typed word selected like "link: or "here" and put the url there in the pop up so it's not hot linked.
https://t.co/U3JmfntfUe @Grimalkin ah thank you very much fir the tip I've got some pictures here from their twitter (LucentStarBJD) : (hopefully I have done this correctly this time and you guys can see them)
I'm sure I'll find a picture without a doll on it so we can get a better view of the horse sculpt itself. I'll do some more digging
Okie, I wasn't able to view the product on TaoBao but I've been able to see it via a shopping service. In the description, I can see that the horse's height is listed at 80cm (not sure it that's to the ears or to the withers but I'm guessing it'll be to its ears). It also states that they can be dissassmebled and reassembled as well which would be pretty cool but I don't see any pictures there showing how it that works. I'll put some links here: 【团】bjd 大马 四肢和头可拆卸 叔用 拍摄道具 马Looking for BJD dolls and wigs? Bhiner is your bjd paradise 【截团】模型马 bjd 大马 3分及3分以上叔、大女用 拍摄道具 马Looking for BJD dolls and wigs? 126 usd? 0_o I see at least 3 prices - 30, 50 and 126 usd. I'm confused)) But thank for the site, i like prices for staff
Aye no worries, I'm a little confused too haha. I was hoping folks on DoA might know a wee bit more about ordering through TaoBao and what sort of things to look out for (I will confess to being a 100% noob). It looks very cool but yeah I have too many queries to click the order button right now lol
http://www.spreenow.com/taobao-agent/taobao/652592173312?option=com_jumi&fileid=27&shop=taobao&i=652592173312 I think I worked out why it was only $126... looks like it's completely sold out aside from the saddle . Such a shame, hopefully they make more and the folks who bought them post pictures online for us to see.
Those horses are so pretty!! I've been looking for some larger ones with a good sculpt, and with how beautiful these are posed I dont mind them not being jointed. Thank you for sharing, I hope they will be restocked sometime soon
Aye they're stunning. I'll keep my eyes peeled and if I spot them back in stock I'll let you all know
i loved the Akhal-teke breed ones moonlightbjd had that were similar to these. i have many ragrets (LOL) for not going for it when i saw the listing.
Shipping is a killer thoug! They told me it's about $480 to germany (USA aswell) but recently it jumped to almost double they say !!
