Horses for larger dolls

Sep 12, 2006

1. HI guys
Where can I buy model horses that would fit
SD13 sized dolls?? I would like to avoid buying
through internet. Do you know any store that would
carry one? I've tried toysRus but they didn't have one.
thanks in advance.

2. I collect model horses, and I have never seen any that are to scale for SD13 dolls. The largest, easy to find one that I have seen are the My Generation horses, which aren't all that well designed as horse models go, and they're much more suited to MSDs. A larger doll on them would look like an adult riding a small pony. I think you can find My Generation horses at Target sometimes.

3. I have an American girl horse and she is way to small for my Juri, Luts Girl body doll. However, she is the perfect size for my Luts Kid Delf Doll.
8)

4. thanks for the advices.
I've seen pictures of SD13size bjd's on the model horses
in the gallery section a long time ago.
they looked so real!!
If I could only remember who those piccies belong to...
by the way the idea of bjh is real cool~
positioning legs in different ways :)

5. I'd been thinking of sculpting a SD/SD13-sized horse, specifically an Andalusian or Lipizzaner type out of regular sculpey and cast it in resin. The real question (after cost for materials) would be whether or not to make it ball-jointed as well for posing.

And really, as many options as there are for giving face-ups to our dolls, just imagine the possibilities for the horses too! Bay, palomino, chestnut, and all the variations for markings too!

6. The largest Breyers are 1/9 scale, and they just get progressively smaller. Believe me, I wish they worked with at least some dolls. I've got over 400 Breyers and original artist resin horses, riders would have been nice.

I think to sculpt a horse 1/3 size, you would have to create a framework to put the clay onto, it'd be way too heavy without something like that in the middle.

7. I don't remember what they were called but I know that at a meet awhile ago Pam had a few... I think they were hers. They seemed to be decently to scale. Those also might have been the pictures you saw if they were from late last year.

8. yeah~ maybe the owner of those piccies is Pam.
that particular post had several piccies of bjds' on few
different horses. they looked very realistic.
hope she posts her horses again. :(

9. Pam's horses are these beautiful repaints she does of the target- my generation horses.
THe Marx horses are 1/6 scale, so I got one for my Toyou. She looks small on it.

10. My Generation--is'nt that the line of dolls unlike, but the same size, as the American Girl dolls? If so, when I get my Rainy Sooah, I want a horse, too! Yours is so beautiful!
Love, Tambra :daisy

11. Yep... My Twinn horses are a *much* better scale for SD/SD13-sized dolls than the My Generation horses are, and they look a little more convincing than American Girl horses... which look entirely too much like plushies. 0_o

When I have light in the morning, I'll take a few pictures of Harumatsu's horse (one of the My Twinn variety-) with CP guys and gals, MiniFees, and my Hound. That beast is almost big enough for 70cm guys. It works perfectly with 60cm dolls. ^_^

12. The scale is better but still off, as it is, that SD13 looks like it is riding a very small pony. Your foot should not be hanging around your mount's knees.

13. Too bad that My Twinn doesn't accept international orders >.<

14. I got an Our Generation horse this evening at Super Target. They are on sale right now for $22.99. I am a very happy Christmas girl.

15. I just found some BIG stuffed horses (with sturdy armature) at a Rite-Aid (drugstore--if you're local to me, the one I saw was in Westlake Village, CA).

They are roughly 29" tall (around 23" at withers), 31" long. Price--$29.00

Those are my CP Elf Yder at the head, and Volks SD-13 Shiro riding...

16. What brands of horses work for SD size BJD's?
I'm from the Netherlands, so I've never seen any of the American Girl or Battat horses in real life. Will the work or are they too small? Also, are there other brands with in-scale horses?

Thanks in advance!

17. Dunno, it says the My Twinn horse is 25" high, which I'm guessing is the top of it's head, and which doesn't put it up to the size of horse I want. So it's still a smaller horse size-wise. I groomed enough horses while I was taking lessons that I know how tall I want it to be in comparison to my boy.

18. Actually, my boy comes in right at 63 cm, that's why I feel it's definitely a little too small at least for me. So I'm gonna see if I can't put together my own, jointed, horse.

19. I am not sure where to post this so here goes.

I was in Target yesterday and I saw horses that are too big for my 43 cm. girl. They are made for American Girl size dolls and looked to me like they would fit the 60 cm. dolls. They were about 2 ft tall. The price was $30. This is a lot less than I have seen this type of horse before. They had wig hair mane and tail. The rest was hard plastic and, IMO, needs a more realistic paint job.

The other thing I saw was a kettle type barbecue. Again, it was too big for my girl. It was about 1 foot tall and cost $20.

I recently bought through eBay a barbecue that is the right size for my 1/4 size dolls.and it is about 8 inches tall. I really think the larger size is right for 1/3 size resin folks.

Since there seem to be Targets everywhere in North America and Australia, I thought this might be of interest.

20. I've bought a lot of the "My Generation" line for my DoT Shall, including the motor bike/scooter, chair set and bathtub. Very reasonablly priced and a pretty good fit!

I never got the horse or grill set, but they sound tempting!!

21. Target has some interesting stuff. :D

Right now, in the toy section, they have $2 bowling ball set (10 pins and the ball). And MSD sized putt-putt putters (really just golf pens) in the dollar section. I noticed the bar-be-que as well, but I think it's a bit too wide, but certianly pass-able!

Also, staples is selling little container boxes that are to scale. I love finding stuff like this. XD

22. As a relative newcomer here i can't believe no one has actually made a scult of an actual ball jointed horse! There seems to be all sorts of amazingly talent laden artists sculpts out there and surely there is a demand for such a creature:aheartbea
Ohhh,my mind is tripping of into changeable face plates and of course they could have whole mane and tail wig collections.
I would be on the waiting list for sure:D
My real life horse does seem a little big for SD size girls:doh
Will keep watching for that equine scult methinks;) It has got to be just a matter of time.

23. ARE there any bjd horses at all, whatsoever? I read somewhere that there are some very good model horses (1/6 scale, tho) made by Dragon that have flex joints, but all I can find online are Breyer and Johnny Wests.

Has anyone ever been able to find a Dragon model horse w/the flex/bjd joints? If so, where? I'd really appreciate this info. Thanks!

24. You know I think Mytwinn has discontinued the Brown Prancer. I can't find it listed anywhere, :...(

- ShadowHawke -

25. It sounds incredible- but also like it would be very expensive due to the amount of work, materials, etc. Can you give us any idea of an approximate price range?
Although, I guess given how much the BJDs cost, we really can't complain about the cost of a custom horse!

26. The Quarter Horse is selling for $84.00+shipping. Back in February they had a lovely brown Prancer and it was selling for $63.00 or so and the Q.H. was selling for $72.00. Then you have to buy the tack and saddles, so yes even the horses for your "kids" gets expensive. But they're soooo worth it.

- ShadowHawke -

27. Ooh, this makes me excited! A future doll needs a horse so I'm glad to see there are horses for him! And luckily he doesn't need tack for it XD

28. I just saw the Brown Prancer on their website today. They wanted $80 + shipping for it.

29. I have several of the target ones. They're great for MSD,but the paint jobs aren't super. I've had t repaint mine to get them looking remotely horsey...

30. I think I may have to try buying a plush and then building a relatively jointed wooden framework and putting that inside it. Or, better yet, make the framework, then cover that with muscle shapes in styrofoam, then that with something velourish and stretchy... *plans* I'd have the legs be simple tongue and groove joints, but each leg and the neck would be wired to pose.

In this economy and with what I've spent on my dolls themselves, I prefer to make as much as I can for them with what I already have, and I know I could come up with something suitable for a 6ocm+ given time...
I might even sell them if I figure out how to make more than one with any kind of ease.

31. In my opinion My Twinn Horse is suitable for 1/3 scale and Flocked Horse from Dollmarket a nice size for 1/4 scale. I have one of both of those horse types and, even keeping in mind maybe something a little higher could work better, I am glad they still play the role. I also think My Generation and Battat horses may get the accurate scale with MSD. Even with so many good ideas around about how to make your own, let's say, BJH (Ball jointed horse) I can't imagine myself trying to create one. The expenses, the time and the talent sometimes are too many things to happen at once when we want.

About My Twinn Horse, I am really hesitating since I read:
Might it mean I'm right and My Twinn Horse and My Twinn Quarter Horse are different types of a same kind? And is it possible to get a My Twinn Horse white?

32. I have one of each and they're the same scale, Misato-swan. The new horse is a different color and in a slightly different pose, but it's the same size as the older one.

33. Bittersweet, because of the fight between wishes and pocket, happy news, Brightfires, but I really thank you them. The truth is that is the best I could hear about the case. It is real what I was afraid of and I could fall getting another and different My Twinn Horse. Who knows? Let’s time. The why that I am glad is a new chance is there and I really thank you for telling me so. :aheartbea

Ahoy, ginarolo! My truly deep thanks. What a gorgeous amazing job the one brighnasa made, that wonderful horse, and it has been even funny reading and bringing back my big memories of that kind of My Twinn Horse huge box. Can be sure I will hold that horse customizing tutorial information and hope I may use it in the future with a next, wishfully white, this time Pegasus horse. :) Everlasting thanks. I must confess I am still wondering wings.

:aeyepop: Yikes! I did not remember those ones, uno-kun. Appaloosa horse from Appaloosa Horse Set (20 inch x 13 inches to the back) is a couple of inches higher than the Dollmarket horse I talked about and sounds like odd in proportions. Brown Horse Standing (15" x 13.5") measures three less tall, what I am afraid means definitely too short. The Dollmarket flocked horse I mentioned is "Doll Market Flocked Horse with Sound 18’’" and, as far as I know, is not on sale in that store anymore from a long ago. I found and got it, in fact a couple of them, from Dollmarket between May and June, 2006 through and thanks the suggestion of another store which used to sell it too, but that stopped selling it some time before than Dollmarket. I am really sorry for that. Wish the info might help you in the hopefully case you may find yours. ;)

34. Hey, I wanted to alert you guys to an inexpensive, jointed horse that's available at Walmart from Paradise Horses. I finally found it online here: http://paradise-horses.com/our_products/horses (scroll down to about the middle). The listing says it's scaled for 18" dolls, and it's only around $30 or $40. It's not as realistic as the other ones mentioned in this thread, but I think it's a good deal for the price.

If anyone has one already, I'd love to see pics with your kid!

I don't think I'll be getting one myself; an SD-sized horse would be more suited to my needs.

35. http://souldoll.com/shop/step1.php?number=1912 The unicorn that souldoll is going to release isn't on topic as a DOLL but it'd make an excellent Noble Steed for some dolly. I'm wondering if it will fit small SDs or only be big enough for MSDs to ride it.

36. Does anyone know if there are any other horses that fit MSD size apart from Battat? The horses they sell just seem so unrealistic and I'm not quite confident enough to start modding a horse yet. Is the MyTwinn size too big for MSDs?

37. Unless your MSDs are supposed to be kids... yes. They'll look too big. They're a better scale for 50-60cm dolls if you're going for "adult on a horse".

If your little guys are supposed to be kids, though, and you're going for "small kid riding something larger than a pony" they're great. XD

38. Oh ok. ^^ Thanks. Guess it's time to start looking into repainting.

39. Apparently it has the same body as Chiron, so maybe someone with a Chiron would be able to chime in about the size.

40. No one is talking about this here?

Just posted in the news forum:
http://www.denofangels.com/forums/s...eated-for-SD-Size-Dolls&p=6195316#post6195316

This looks incredible! And the price, while expensive, is not that bad considering you would pay that much for most SD size dolls. I would sand off the tail and mane and use real horsehair instead. The customizing potential for this beast is incredible. Good job folks! Sadly I have no extra monies at this time, but I will definitely start a savings fund for this guy.

41. I'm glad to have found this thread to discuss the horse I am offering!
I really believe it's a good thing to have many choices in price and quality. The horses that Pam SD customize are wonderful, she takes a toy plastic horse and makes it into a work of art that appears realistic and works for most of the larger BJDs. I so admire her work. Not only does she customize the horses she makes fabulous tack for them as well.
My horse is another choice, it's more expensive but it's made from resin. In small batches. I suppose very much like how our BJDs are produced. It was very expensive to have the mold made and to pay for each casting. It's alot of work! Remember, these are not made in a large factory, they are made each by hand in a resin-casting art studio. The price of resin is way more expensive than plastic. I welcome all comments and criticisms :)
Oh, and thank you Cirquemom for the heads up!

42. Sorry, Shulamite, but I have to say I am not fond of the pose of that model horse for dolls at all. It looks like the model for it was standing with it's head turned toward the camera as their reference which looks very unnatural to me. I would think most doll collectors would want the horse in more of a walking or with the legs in a walking motion to make it look like it is moving versus standing, but maybe that is just me. I would love to see a realistic BJD horse, but have'nt seen one yet that meets my aesthetic criteria.

43. The resin horse is in a classic Arabian Halter Class position.
If you do a little research and look at photos of Arabian Stallions you find MANY in this exact pose.
Arabs have very long flexible necks.
I ride one so I have seen it first hand.
Bijou can actuall turn to look ar me with BOTH eyes whenI am on his back!
Sheri did great research for her horse.
He's pretty darn close to perfect.
(I liked the 4th foot pointed back but she went for stability)

Price is right on target for something made of resin and cast in small numbers.
Would I like to pay less?
Of course.
But I totally get why it's priced this way.
He's a piece of ART more than anything.

I am hoping she sets herself to sculpt a Fresian next !
Please Sheri?
I can send you 20 lbs of clay to get started!

• x 1
44. Thank you Luckyl for your critique. I know my horse is not perfect and I'm fairly certain other horses for BJDs will be available very soon which will be what you want. Choice is a good thing :)
I made SLD Nahar to be what I would want for my own dolls and they haven't complained :)

45. Oh, a Friesian! What a wonderful idea. I'd like to one of those and the Arabian. So lovely!

46. Have just discovered this thread. I love Shulamite's horse^^
Has anyone so far mentioned the armoured horse that is available from Domuya? He is limited but can be bought without the armour. The horse is called 'Nightmare' and described as a D1 Companion.
The limited edition pre-release can be found here, though I believe there will also be a standard version in due course. He's about $603 US at current exchange rates.
He is ball-jointed, but I wonder how good he would be at standing and posing. I think he was declared OT as a doll by the mods because he's not an anthro, obviously - but I guess it would be okay to discuss him as a BJD accessory? :)

47. Nahar looks really beautiful in the website pix, love that Arab intelligence looking back at you. So many choices on how to blush him, too. Not in the budget right now, sadly, but if I win the lottery I'm on it.
I'd second the comment that a Friesian horse would also be terrific mount for larger BJDs, or any of the other draft horses, but of course they'd also be more expensive, like casting some of the really big muscly guys we can get now. (Sorry, zoning out here a bit, I'm having images of somebody like a Kamau or a Tedros as a horse trainer...)

48. I have a Battat horse for my dolls. Ena is a 60 cm doll, for her it's ok. Like a ponie. But for the 70 cm dolls, it is far to small.

49. I love the SIZE of the Nahar, and it is a gorgeous Arabian! I do indeed want one, and if I can paint it right, it'd be a beautiful object of art to have in my house when the dolls aren't riding it!
I do hope future sculpts if there are going to be any, may include walking poses too. I will almost certainly be saving for Nahar!

50. I can't imagine Shulamite sculpting a whole line of horses, as the work and money involved would be incredible, but a Friesian in motion would be wonderful! Not that her Arabian isn't beautiful!

My only thought is that having a horse without a sculpted mane and tail would be nice because people could add hair in the color of their choice. I think using hair makes the horse look much more realistic. True the tail can be removed and the mane sanded off, but what a lot of work and wasted resin!

Perhaps offering the horse in two versions, one with sculpted mane and tail and one without could be an option?

51. I am also saving for the horse. I have an Anglo-Arab and he looks just like this sculpt.

52. Ooooo TOTALLY subscribing here! :D I love love love horses too, I have two of my own, and my mom has one as well, and we all love on our "little man" the pony.

Anyway. I have one of the Target "our generation" or whatever they're called horses (from my American girl phase hahah) and he's definitely way too small for my 60cm boy. I am however doing a repaint on him so he looks prettier sitting in my room, and redoing his mane and tail with real horsehair, courtesy of my loverly Thoroughbred Ferarri. I grew her mane out all winter for this purpose. XD I think this horse will make a nice pack pony for my druid/elf character. :3

Gyah, I'm SO pining for a MyTwinn horse now! The cusomizing opportunities are endless~ And I really like the flocking, you can paint over it and it still has a realistic look unlike painted plastic. And PamSD you have my undying worship! Your horse mods are freaking AWEsome. I want to see more! lol

53. I certainly will do a Friesian next and thanks Pam for the offer of clay lol. If it is to be a horse in motion it will need a base as only two feet will be on the ground. After I get some other commissions done I definitely will start on the Really Big Guy.
I plan on customizing one SLD Nahar model as a Friesian type for BJDC 2010. He will get more of a Roman nose and I will add mohair feathers. Paint him black and a bushy mane and tale, voila, half-breed Friesian. It never hurts to try :)

54. I think you could do 3 feet onthe ground and be in good shape to forgo the base.
like this one but more highly detailed...

though in my dreams a jointed horse would be able to do this
this would rock ! ! ! !
had to share...I need to make this costume for Nahimana...

I better stop...I could pull fresian pics all day.

Hey Sheri do you have those measurements for me?

55. OOOOOH YESSSSS!
Drooling over Friesian pictures and imagining horse AND doll costumes...
Three feet on the ground will work. Gads, I wish I had the skill to do a ball-jointed horse right now. I do plan on trying a doll first and who knows, the bjd horse could happen. Certainly others will as Domuya has already done.
I got a reply from Deb this morning that she is planning on taking the measurements tomorrow as she is sick today. I will forward them to you as soon as I get it.
