Aesthetics Help me pin down what seems "off"

Mar 28, 2019

    1. I have this one doll that I'm having a lot of trouble finalizing. This is the first time I've had this issue, and I'm not able to pinpoint exactly what it is that's "off" about her.

So first off, here's her face right after the face-up:

It's not the best I've ever done, but I do like how she looks bald. I'm going for a tortie cat theme, and have yet to make her ears and tail.

Here's the first wig I made her:

The color is a bit too bright in comparison to the skin and I've edited the photo slightly to make it look less jarring. In person I hate it and I have to style it "just so" or it looks like a mess - not a hot one.

So I scrapped that wig and went ahead and bought a Monique Gold one:

And I'm starting to hate this one too! It at least looks half decent in person, and the colors seem right - exactly what I wanted - BUT something is off. I dunno what it is! The face-up? Her eyes? The wig being too poofy/long/unstyled?

Does anyone have any suggestions? Please don't be kind, roast the shit out of my doll, I need those outside opinions.

    2. That's tough. I honestly think she is really beautiful and unique. I really like the way the colors of the Monique wig go with her resin color and face-up. If you don't like the length or volume maybe you could see about getting a different style of theirs in that same color combo.

Just personally, I think changing the eyes might make a big difference. The eyes of a doll have so much power. Maybe something with a darker iris? Maybe it would be fun to try eyes with a cat pupil?

    3. Personally I love the orange wig. :sweat That is personal preference though!

And I think the eyes look great, honestly (I actually love the color, and the size is right in my preference too).

I am wondering if it is perhaps because the head maybe looks a little too big on that body? I'm not sure what combo it is, but to me the shoulders seem a little too narrow, and make the head look too big overall. Maybe some bigger shoulder decorations might help a little?

    4. Well... I can't see anything off, try as I might, and I am very peculiar about face ups and wigs and stuff when it comes to my own, I'm not easily satisfied with a look.

I am convinced it is more about what you imagined her to look like versus how she looks like in reality - not something objectively "wrong" with her that others who do not have your pre-conceived ideas about her could detect as well.
Alison gave excellent advice, play around with wigs and eyes and see if you can come closer to your expectations? Don't fret, some dolls take their own sweet time to come together. Good luck <3

    5. So I started mucking about really quickly with the distort tool and other things after all of the suggestions, and I think we're on to something. :o

I made the shoulders wider and the hair less poofy (slapped some crudely done ears and tail on lol) and I think that combo totally fixed her in my eyes. It's too bad I technically can't make her shoulders wider, so maybe I might make her hair shorter, and put a big furry wrap around her neck/shoulders to conceal how small they are? I'm going to put her back on her old body quickly to get a feel for that as well. I've never personally like the bobblehead look, so this is probably a huge contributor for me. The small shoulders combined with the poofy hair just amplify it.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions so far <3 , I'm gonna look into getting cat pupil eyes as well because I like that idea.

    6. Your doll is wonderful beautiful painted and so much love and patience.

    7. I think she's beautiful, and I love the faceup! I'm seconding @AlisonVonderland's suggestion regarding the darker irises, though. The ones she has now are so pale that it's hard to distinguish them from the sclera - so her pupils kind of look as though they're actually very small irises in the photos that aren't close up.

    8. I like the orange wig as well but this is also me not liking brown hair in general, so take me with a grain of salt. I just like the contrast of orange a lot better with the tan skin and since the faceup is brown already, I feel the brown hair is too much of the same color. However, if the color is too jarring in person, perhaps another shade of orange or a custom wig that’s orange with brown highlights. I just think a brighter hair is better suited for this particular customization. Again, it’s just my opinion and I think whichever way you go will be amazing. She’s already stunning.

    9. Your work is lovely! If it were me, I would probably put just one white streak somewhere. I know torties don't have to have white, but all the ones I've seen in person have at least a touch of it. Like, a white tipped ear or a white streak on one side of the wig. Or even just an outfit with some white on it.

    10. I definitely think you're on the right track with the wig re-styling/thinning. The colour of the newer one seems perfect for you girl. It complements her faceup!
In general I would suggest boiling the wig to make it flatter, but from my experience Monique wigs don't take that great to heat.

    11. I think she’s really beautiful, especially with the added cat ears! The only thing I’d suggest is to continue the fur pattern down the arms and legs.

    12. I agree with this.

    13. Personally I agree with whats others said about messing around with her eyes and wigs. Trying to match what you had orginally imagined for her. I think shes beautiful now and maybe just playing around with those things may really help. With that said If she was my doll . I might consider adding white or something around her nose mouth area. Its makeing me feel like somethings missing but I cant put my finger on what or how to add to that area to solve that . Then again im torn and maybe only playing around with eyes and wig would solve that . Id also maybe like to add color to her fingertips ,arms or shoulders too.

    14. Love the ears on her.

I don't see anything wrong--but then, I don't have the same vision in mind for her that you do!

If you're worried about the shoulders, just try to posE her more squared up to the camera. Those first shots definitely had her at an angle so that you couldn't see the shoulder width at all.

I'm curious about if you switched the dresses, how would it look? I think that navy dress is a bit too dark for the darker hair, and the lighter dress might be too much alike her hair color.

    15. She has such a vivid faceup I'd get the eyes in a slightly brighter color, green or yellow. Right now they seem a little washed out compared to the vibrant colors of her skin/faceup/wig.

A bright green that contrasts with the reddish brown that's her main coloring would really pop.

    16. I think the hair might be too long. The long face with long markings and then long hair just draws the viewer's eyes eternally downward, with no place to rest visually. Perhaps shoulder length, or a long bob, might suit her better. I actually think the shoulders are just fine, it's the hair length that is giving the illusion of narrow shoulders. In the bald photo the upper body seems nicely proportioned.

    17. Totally loving the orange wig.

    18. @sahoma I actually just poured boiling water over it and it's way more tame/flat now and I'm super happy with it. All my synthetic mohair wigs from Monique have done really well with hot water.

@GCDear Thanks, I had been thinking of doing that, but haven't really solidified the plan for how exactly it will look.

@april Unfortunately I have this habit of making things match way too much, haha, so I did pick the navy dress specifically to offset that. I'll play around with outfits some more, but I like having variety.

@cupcakedolls That's such a good point, and probably part of what's messing with my perception of her. I always envisioned her having long hair (as most/all my dolls have short hair and I wanted to shake it up), but I'm thinking I might have to go shorter. :P

So much to ponder on, thank you everyone so much for the input! <3

    19. I'm not sure if someone already suggested this, but maybe try larger eyes ? Her whole look is very unique and stylized, smaller looking eyes usually seem more 'realistic'. Otherwise I think she looks really nice !! And your mockup makes it look more complete as well. I really can't wait to see the complete version !

Sorry for the bad cellphone quality, I didn't know my cellphone was so bad. :x

I went to make her cat ears and found that I have no mini magnets left so I'll have to get more of those. From the suggestions, I added some white to her with some white eyelashes (not glued in or aligned perfectly yet, just being held in by eyes/eye putty), and some white stripes under her eyes and on her nose (just a photo edit for now until I decide on it). After getting her hair perfectly straight, I thought to keep it behind her shoulders but retain the length. So now you can actually see she has shoulders. :D Now that her hair is straight, her human ears show through the hair so I guess she'll just have four ears. I've commissioned someone to make cat pupil eyes, so what you see in the photos is just another photo edit for now.

Anyways, just thought I would show everyone how much your suggestions helped. ^^ I love how she's really coming together.

    21. I LOVE the touchups you did on her faceup! And those eyes!! :D
And glad to hear/see the wig did not melt :) maybe only some monique wigs have weaker fibers. *shrug*

    22. The white eyelashes are a fantastic touch!

I like her with a wig framing her face...bald her markings remind me of really dramatic Spock eyebrows :sweat

New eyes will definitely round out her character!

    23. The white eyelashes really frame her face well. I hope the eyes you ordered look like the photoshop, because that really works well! Good luck!

    24. I love her face up and I kinda like her better with out a wig. Maybe try a Mohawk? It one of those half shaved styles with one long side? I love her face, maybe it’s the wig covering it up.

    25. Gorgeous, unique...I really like the amber brown cat eyes in this photo, it is a huge improvement in my opinion!
