Hi all, I'm coming down with a cold so feeling sick and miserable today so I was lazy and only sculpted one eye! Hope it's OK? 1. best feature .. kinda like the tear duct 2. worst feature ... maybe the upper eyelid is a little thick. 3. what I learned ... I can sculpt an eye in 5 minutes . Critique .. yep. __________________ BloodLath .. love your little mouse head .. so cute! Armeleia .. I am sculpting with Sculpy 111 .. it's soft and I can easily smooth it with my fingers or a soft brush .. I also find if I sprinkle a little talc on the sculpt it helps smooth it nicely. PatL .. love your lion cub .. and all my sculpts slope to the left too. I like the way you think!!!
Oooh, I love her mouth, Armeleia! It really is very cute. I can see what you mean by the browline on the outside edges, but I love the way the forehead into the nose is a combination of a human nose and a cat's nose. And now that you point it out, that's a very good point about "if cats were really human"... I know my cat would make a very sleepy (and prissy) catgirl. Kaye: I am completely enamored with the sculpting under the eye. It creates that extra element of realism. ^_^ I don't think I'm going to get the opportunity to sculpt tonight though. =( I had to head straight from work to my other obligation and just got home. And sadly I have to wake up crazy-early for work in the morning (well, every morning really). *pout* After I finish tomorrow's challenge I might try to sculpt an extra sleepy-eyed head just for the practice. ^_~ I'm really eager to see what everyone else comes up with though!
lol cheekbones of doom 1. size: SD 2. best feature:um, I dunno. The nose maybe 3. worst feature: eyes X_X 4. what I learned: To look at it in the mirror, the eyes were so uneven when I took the pic, but I fixed them when I saw the pictures. (I worked on it a little and took new pics, but now the eyes are uneven the other way X_X I need to let the clay cool off though, it's too mushy) 5. critique: That would help a lot O_O Armeleia: Wow, that looks amazing! I love the mouth especially. She looks like she should be in some really cool fantasy movie, with like blue markings on her body and face Kaye: That eye is so cool it looks realistic AND sleepy. (rather than squinty or just small eyes) You guys' skill really puts me in my place lol. I'm jealous
#3 Sleepy eyes....... Well, here I am after the "day from hell" everything that could go wrong did! I got the wrong Sculpey to start with....I only like using the white stuff...so I had to persevere with it............. __________________________________________________________________ Armeleia.........I LOVE Catgirl...she is so beautiful...I love her purring mouth... Kaye.........Wow...what a wonderful eye sculpt...I envy you...it's beautiful... Nefia........I love the sleepy eyes you did, and a very roman nose....... __________________________________________________________________ On to my disaster........ Wrong Sculpey........ Up the nose shot........lol...... Size..........SD Boy Best feature......I like his big lips... Worst feature........Why do I always make skinny faces! Eyelids are the worst yet!! What I learned.........Never sculpt on a bad day! Critique.........If you're game!!! xen
Okay here we go... 1. Approximate size-head is around 3.5 inches not including anntenas, made out of paperclay and toothpicks over a stryofoam ball 2, Best feature ? I like his nose because it is wierd 3. Worst- eyes...the bead mushed in to far on one side so they are crooked 4. Learned...I can't work from a picture...it was supposed to be a chimpanzee when I started 5. Crits-sure why not His beautemous self!
head 3 --- sleepy eyes. kind of a bummer of a day, capped off by opening a new box of grey superfirm sculpy and discovering it was so soft it ran thru my fingers like peanut butter. hard to sculpt in peanut butter. so i spent some time kneading it together with some overly hard clay i had sitting around. then some stuff came up and i got really sad. so this is the result size : roughly sd sized - grey not firm at all sculpy best point : don't think this one has a best point worst point : eyes are too bulgy --- but the clay kept oozing away when i tried to smooth them down so i gave up. something i learned : sculpting a realistic tear is hard. Armeleia : I love your 16 lb cat! i had a cat named petunia - she was a skinny little thing, but she let us all walk around with her draped around our necks, purring madly all the time. thank you for reminding me of her - that was a very long time ago... your cat looks very comfortable - i'd love to see her profile too... her mouth looks adorable. Kaye : even with just an eye your sculpting is beautiful and finely finished... Nefla : love those cheekbones!!! it looks really even now, so looking at it in the pics (or in the mirror) really worked... nice proportions over all... would love to see it from in front...
All of the heads look great! I wasn't able to finish the second challenge or even start the third one because of classes/homework. Maybe for the 4th one, I can combine them all into one?
Armeleia: Awesome. She reminds me of a cat I used to know. Kaye: Nice. And for some reason I'm really amused by the idea of a little slab of clay with an eye in it... Nefla: I kinda like your swoopy eye shape, actually. You might try blending the side of the lower lip into chin area a little... if that makes sense. Xen: I was going for "haughty" too, but I think your boy wins the prize! Sommersdai: I don't know what he is, but I love him! (Hm... caterpillar, maybe? A la Alice in Wonderland?) Patl: The lips are lovely... and aside from the slight bulgy-ness, the eyelids are really nice. I like the way you defined the bottom of the upper lid. And the shape is really expressive. Sorry you're sad... hope things get better. Scale: 1/4 Best: The lower half of the profile. Worst: The eyes. Learned: More about the way the cheeks & jawline can indicate age. Crits: Sure.
Sorry for the quick post. I've had little time on this last one but would like to thank everyone for their kind words. Sleep eyes: Statement: I was going for a tired, troubled look. Scale: SD Best: ??? Worst: Everything. Not really liking this one, even he looks like he hates me. Learned: Not to sit what I'm working on to close to an edge and I need a lot more work on getting a realistic head. Crits: All the help I can get
Even though I finished first (to my surprise, I didn't start sculpting till 8:30!)... I already picked a theme, so I'm going to tag Nefla, who created the second full head. Nefla, please post your challenge at or after 5pm EST tonight! Ino, thanks for the compliment, hon! I'll try to take some profile pics. I'm not sure why I didn't... I think I just fuzzed out around 10 last night. Kaye, what a lovely eye... Have you ever considered doing a full doll with those half-closed eyes? They're beautiful. I love the slight swell in the lower eyelid - it makes it very emotive, like with the right eyebrow the face could be squinty-glaring... or, compeltely differently, it could be that little bunch-up that people's eyes get when they smile. You're really wonderful with the small details like that. (I've never heard of Sculpey 111... what is it? Like, how is it different from the little blocks at the craft store or the big boxes of Super Sculpey?) Nefla - oooooh, a new challenger enters the ring! This is a great head! I think it fits the ABJD aesthetic pretty well, too, with the long eyes. It reminds me a little of one of the Elysium heads... with that broad, sexy downturned mouth. The only thing I notice is that your sculpt slants slightly to the right, like \. I think most artists do this, where they kinda pull the sculpt a little toward their dominant hand. I think your mirrorwork helped, though! The eyes seem to be really even. xen - Another pouty lovely from you! I like the "angry" lines in the brow, and the general disapproving look he's got. The mouth and nose are also very nice. I think you're right about the head being very skinny... maybe you could flesh out his cheeks to balance him a bit more? In doing so, maybe you could also add little more space between his eyes, which might balance the face more too. Sommerdai - Very creative sculpt - the antennae and little top-ears make me think a little of a giraffe! It's very detailed for being sculpted so tiny as well... as you pointed out, the bead squished a bit on one side, so it is a bit uneven. When the clay sets, you might just built it back up to even it out. patl - Awww, I'm sorry you had a bad day. *biiiiiig hug* And geez, doesn't sound like your Sculpey Firm was very firm at all! Wasn't it you who once commented that your hands are very warm, so you sort of "melt" normal Super Sculpey? I have the opposite problem... my hands are always so cold that I have a hard time getting Sculpey soft at all! I always go hunting for the softest box I can find. Anyway, on to the actual sculpt - it's nother lovely one! The mouth is very pretty, and the nose is exquisite as always. The way you've sculpted the brow ridge would work beauuuutifully with a sad-eyebrow faceup. < I don't have much for critique, really, but I think this sculpt would be really cool and even more expressive with a slightly open mouth, like the person was sort of drawing in a shuddering gasp. Kiomi, I hope you can do the next one! Just do like Kaye did, if you don't have time, and just do one feature! Logodae - what a smirky little boogerhead you sculpted! I love him! Good use of making the half-closed eyes so disdainful. I know you don't like the eyes, but you did do a good job making it look like there are eyeballs beneath the eyelids... which is unfortunately something I'm still having trouble with. Your first mouth was pretty good, but this one is even better. The lip definition is really good - was the angle of the mouth intentional? If so, it's a really good smirk! And if not... it's a really good smirk! Bloodlath - Great browline and cheekbones. Mayeb it's the upward tilt of the eyes you have in him with his pursed lips, but he has a very thoughtful, considering look. Sort of like he's thinking about something... or maybe about to roll his eyes at something his little sister said. In the 3/4th view, it looks like you could probably build up right under his eyelid, in the space between his lower eyelid and the top of his cheekbone. Also, I think you have the same problem I do! You might need to sculpt more forehead - both up and out. Oh! And comments from yesterday! Darkmothflame - Wow, I love the way you modified this. I really liked that faceplate originally, but this gives it a lot more depth and expression. Freaking cute head! The new mouth is great. I don't have much for crit on this one. Corchen - I really like the upper half of the face a lot. The eyes and brow are very smiling and curious, very fitting for a cat-family animal. And the ears are a good size for a tiger, to keep him from looking like a housecat. I also like the divot in the end of his nose - it's very catlike! I can't see the lower half of the face very well, but from the profile, it looks like you may want to bring the chin forward a little bit. Also, the lower lip seems to come forward more than the upper lip. I think that on most people (and most stylized sculpts), the upper lip usually stick out more. You might want to try taking the lower lip back a little? it's a great first head though, it looks like you already have a lot of control and a a good eye for depth. Thanks, everyone, for your comments on Petunia. I'm glad you like her, and I do appreciate the suggestions as well. If I continue with her, I'll definitely fix her forehead! (She's also lumpy and a bit crooked, thanks for not focusing on that!) I'll try to take some profile pics of her tonight too. Thanks to everyone who's participating - and let me state again, you guys really rock.
*sad* I'll probably not be able to participate again today or the next days, sigh, and I was looking forward to the heavy eye lid challenge. Kind of a chaotic job situation right now and I have to prepare for a really important interview monday that was arranged today. But the half closed eye sculpts you've made are all wonderful I'll follow the thread and hope to maybe jump in on some of the last challenges.
<sigh> my head wasn't/isn't very good... but i learned a lot! size : slim msd - again it's using a modified cast of my pierrot faceplate best part - i don't think there is one worst part - everything what i learned - how to do the folds in the eyelid when the eye is closed critique - not really because it's a very poor sculpt this time around.... i don't know if i have anything to critique on other peoples because i think a lot of them are better than mine or i'm not really sure how to help -- but i do have to say, kaye, your eye are gorgeous! and armeleia -- my cat would be about 10 times fatter than that, but that's the right expression for her ^^;;;; but the mouth is adorable! i might not be able to do this next challenge - it depends on how long my homework and room cleaning takes ><;;;;;;
All the heads are so lovely! I wish I could have participated! I'm eagerly awaiting today's challenge.
Y'know, Nefla's back about 5 hours from the East coast.... and I don't know if she'll be checking in earlier because she didn't actually post first. If she doesn't post here by 7, I'll just pick another theme so we can get started.
To Bunnydots, DiSpy, Dianna: Thank you. My Husband is also after me to create a full version of the Door Mouse (ala Alice in Wonderland). I have drawn up the body... now to learn to sculpt, mold making, and casting. You'll see more of him as I learn more from this forum. What a great place to be. Armeleia - Love the lazy kitty. Her lips look soft parted in a content purr Kaye - Can I sit at you feet and learn. 5 mins on that wonderful eye. Sigh... one day I can hope. And it is so expressive. I hope you are feeling better today. Nefla - The cheekbones and the nose are really strong way to go. xen - His lips, ah his lips. They are so wonderfully full. Great job. Sommerdai - What a fun face. I'm into that very large nose you gave him. Patl - What can I say...? Offering online courses? Beautiful. Thank you for the link. It was a high compliment, for the artist has very powerful, emotion invoking work. Logodae - What a sweet sleepy head. Darkmothflame - Your work is very strong. I always look forward to see what you'll do next. Well heres to hoping that the next quest is up soon or I'll won't get to play this round. ( I sculpt after dinner until before bed : 6:30 pm to 8:45 pm est)
Bedtime for Bonzo! Here is what I got done... I'm calling it Moon in Shock size : SD best part - i don't think there is one... maybe the expression worst part - everything plus I didn't finish what i learned - I need a lot of time and new batteries for the camera critique - xp
Okey dokey ... heres my effort for today. I couldn't resist giving her some colour and some eyes. Might even finish this one and cast her one day. size : SD ish best point : sticky out ears (love sticky out ears) worst point : maybe I made the mouth too small? something I learned : I love sculpting heads Critique: yep Armeleia: I buy the Sculpy 111 in little blocks at my local craft and fabric store .. I'll take a pic of it. It's about the same as the white sculpy you can get in the bigger block but I was not able to find the white stuff for the challenge. Thanks everyone for your great comments
BloodLath: Well, he certainly looks surprised. Kaye: Too cute! Love the lips. Size: 6" around, so, not much smaller than a mini head -- but would work best on a much smaller body, I think. Best: I'm pretty happy with the overall proportions and shape. Worst: The expression isn't really working for me. Learned: How to make an animal nose/mouth that I like (expression aside.) Crits: Yes, please! I might try to redo/finish this one, so crits are especially welcome.
Wow Kaye! I love that face, it's so cute and you made such an adorable button nose and Logodaye that cat face looks so well made, love the happy eyes
Bloodlath ... You have a pretty good shape there .. are you using plastercine? I find it awfully hard to sculpt with. Logodae .. that's a cute little kitty .. can't see anything that needs changing.
As usual I am bringing up the rear with the head of the day....but today is a two-fer! Here you go... 1.Approx size-human head is between MSD and Serendipty Alice, pumpkin is about two inches tall, both paperclay and sanded a little 2. Best features-human I like her eyes, pumpkin-I totally love him cause he made me laugh at two am this morning as he winked at me 3. Worst feature-human I am not thrilled with her forehead, mouth and cheeks...we won't even talk of her ears 4. Learned...tv after midnight bites... 5. Crits yep lets do it.
These were all I was able to get before the batteries on my camera died X_X It's about MSD size Bloodlath: Best. Expression. EVER. It makes me giggle. I wish bjd's came with exaggerated expressions sometimes, it would be fun XD Kaye: OMG She's adorable! With some sanding and such she looks like she could be a professional head sold by companies! I looooove her profile so much. Logodae: Kitty! I love that even though it is a cat, it still has a bit of a human look. It's really cute! Sommersdai: The first head looks really different, but I like it. It reminds me of the native art you see around here with the accent on the nose and face shape. The pumpkin is just made of win, I love that expression so much, and it doesnt look akward at all!
Nefla- thanks, I was actually thinking about our social worker in Fairbanks that handled our foster kiddos while we lived there. I totally loved the art around there, thanks. Your noses is so good-I am jealous! Kaye- so the cute! Patl-your sleepy/crying eyes looks so sad, I want to hug her Xen and Bloodlath your guys need to form a brooding rock band, they would go platinum Logodae-oh my stars, I am in love with your littlesleepy eyes 1/4 scaler. Great details! Armeleia-she is so serene and totally feline-esque Darkmothflame (actually commentary from my 10 year old) 10 year old- What is that? Me-it's her eye challenge head. 10 year old-That's really disturbing. Me-You think so really? 10 year old- Yeah, I mean look at those stitches, creepy...but really cool cause (she shudders) you know it's like art.
Hey guys.....sorry I coludn't submit anyting today.... I'm totally snowed under at work and personal stuff too...I popped by a couple of times today to have a peek at all these awesome heads....I'm so impressed with all the talent out here......wonderful work guys....you should all be very proud I have really enjoyed this challenge and learned so much...thanks.....I am going to bow out now....... Thanks for all the lovely comments on the heads that I made...... ____________________________________________________________ Sommersdai...........I love your little green Chimpy guy with the anntena... his nose is wonderful............ And I love your sleepy eye guy you did, he looks like he's peeping at something...and I like his mouth too......... Patl.........Wow...what an emotional face!! Love the tear....so sad...you rock at this......... Logodae...............Love the little "haughty" guy.....lots of character.....And your little cat is soooooo cute...love the eyes and little ears........ Bloodlath.................The moody guy is great, I love his angry brows...and his nose is great................And the Moon face is so much fun...looks shocked and very surprised.............. Darkmothflame...........Very clever stiched eye.......I love the mouth on this head too............. Kaye...............Wow....what beautiful wide open eyes, such a cute button nose and sweetest mouth....you rock too......... Nefla..........Lovely big eyes........and that side profile is just lovely....... Well done everyone......it's been a complete pleasure to have been amongest such awesome sculptors.... I feel privileged.......... xen
Wow, I love everyone's recent sculpts! Sorry I haven't participated in the last two. You know how life kind of gets in the way sometimes. *sigh* I'll post more detailed crits later when I have a chance to go over everyone's sculpts at leisure. ^_^ (I'm checking DoA on the sly at work again... bad me.)
logodae, if you don't mind me barging in again, i wouldn't change a thing about the kitty expression. it's a very happy kitty face, and also very different from the other anthro kitties out there, which, considering the vast hordes of kitties that have been tossed up recently, is really saying something. whatever you did with the mouth works great.
I have to agrees with Bunnydots... Leave it as is. It is very different that what is on market, and that is in a good way.
Bloodlath wins for today! Please post your challenge for today around or slightly after 5pm EST (GMT-5) ... Happy Leap Year, everyone! We're more than half-way through the week now too and we're still going, hurrah! xen - Bummer you can't continue, but it was awesome to see your work... and I'm sure we'll be seeing a bunch more from you in the future. You have a lot of talent and a great eye. Bloodlath - Okay, that submission is made of win. I love the expression! If you were to continue with this one, I'd love to see how you'd handle the detail inside the mouth. Kaye - That is a damn cute little head. I actually really like her mouth, the downturned expression is really cute. My only critique is that the eyes seem to be a bit uneven, the viewer's right looks a bit higher. Logodae- ...! ....! *squeeeeeeeee!* This head is so CUTE!!!! Please make a head like this and do a full doll - it's so cute and I would love to see it. I love the little happy eyes... and the positioning of the ears is great, very different from theo ther cat anthro BJDs for sale. Keee-yute. For critique, I don't have much - the only thing I see is that one cheek looks a little "pointier" than the other side. The viewer's left seems to be smoother/more rounded. Sommersdai: The first one is very cute, but I LOVE the expression on the pumpkin! I would love to see him as a character in a claymation animation because I think he would just be super charming. Nefla - Nice job on both the eyes and mouth! The head has a very good "anime" look to it too! Today's head: This is a crappy head. ._. My roommate (and best critic, really) made me pick the big-eyes challenge because she says most of my sculpts are failing the asian aesthetic because the eyes are too small... and really, she's right! So doing a day with bigger eyes and a broader face is a good exercise for me. Unfortunately, I sucked at this one! I actually did two heads for this one, but the first was so bad that I just threw it away. It looked like an ugly little fish! Anyway. This head is childish MSD sized. 1. The best feature is... um. It's hard to pick one. The nose, I guess. I kinda like the details I added to it. I didn't take any detail photos, but she has a little line in the bottom of her nose that makes her work as another kitty head. 2. The worst feature is the rest of the head. If I had to pick one particularly bad thing, it would be the mouth area. The mouth is too low, and there are hollows around the mouth where I needed to build it up. I think if I added more clay and filled it out, it would really improve the face. However, I think this head is destined for the junk bin! 3. With this head, I learned a little more about traditional BJD proportioning. 4. Critique is okay. Here is a profile pic of day 3's girl:
head4 --- hmmmmmm - anime. definitely not a strong point for me. but fun to play. ok - big anime eyes, tiny anime nose and mouth (<grin> - i know, i missed it but it was fun anyway....) about 8" - 10" tiny size - grey sculpy. best point - her nose - and maybe her slightly confused and questioning expression (much stronger in person) worst point - trying to make her look mechanical - its hard to quickly sculpt hard metallic details in really soggy clay! learned something - probably not today again - it is so awesome to see all the different looks that each of us sculpts --- from yesterday - xen - so sorry you had a bad day - i think it must have been global!!! I love his haughty expression --- he is wonderful... sommersdai --- awesome creature! i think it would be so cool to have a bunch of these guys rampaging around my work table! I love his nose! logodae - lovely sad face --- bu i can see haughty too --- gorgeous profile - you always have the best profiles.... bloodlath - i love his eyebrows - and his nose --- i can see tired but even more i see the troubled. i think he is well worth continuing on ... take a look at your eyes, and the way the lower lid is formed. i think if you make a few changes there you will see how beautiful he is. darkmothflame - you don't back down from the hard, uncomfortable images. i would like to see another pic after you've sanded, sprayed it all one color and refined those stiches. I think you might want to play with the shape of the upper lid on the open eye. awesome. and now for todays : bloodlath - love his expression!!! and that you went for the open mouth --- i love them, but find them difficult to sculpt... kaye - you sculpt the way i wish i could. so sweet. logodae - what a gorgeous cat head! very much a human/cat with a different take - love it! sommersdai - oh I love winks!!! that is an awesome pumpkin! and the other guy looks so happy. your heads just make me smile... nefla - beautiful - very serene but questioning. hey armeleia - i hear you about the asian aesthetic thing -- i fail it every time too. but i don't think it matters too much --- the board is for one section of the bjd world - if you look at asian artists' bjds - many of them wouldn't be allowed here. i think its better to go where your heart pulls you. i like this face, not as much as your cat guy --- but the rather haughty expression combined with the lovely shape and features makes me think it will be gorgeous with a faceup.
You all have me wanting to drop everything & make BJD heads... What a great bunch of beings (you and your heads)! Soon... Forest http://www.forestrogers.com
hey Forest! sure wish you could! but i figure when the planets align just right - you are poised to sit down and create something truly incredible. can't wait!
Pat....I loooooove your punkin' head!! I think you should make a body for it!! When I get my "pretty" girl done..I want to make some fun ones. Great job..I love your imagination!!
Forest, you should hop in when you have some time and the right mood. Did you sculpt what's in your avatar? (If so, WOW.) Oh, patl... that one is adorable! I can see why the line sharpness would bother you, with the soggy clay... but dang, that is an awesome sculpt. I think this Day 4 batch has just been amazingly creative - they're all so different! I can't wait to see what tonight's challenge will be.
Sommersdai: Make that pumpkin head not as a BJD, but as just a resin pumpkin for Halloween this year... sell them on eBay... make a fortune!!
Sommersdai: Pumpkin is made of win. What a great expression. Nefla: Cute pouty lips! Armeleia: Aw, it's not that bad. I think the eye style would work very well if you wanted to do an open-eye cat-girl. I do like Day 3 better, though. Sleepy kitty! Pat: That... is adorable. What a great design. And the screw for the nose is a great touch. Forest: I'm sure whatever you're working on is gorgeous (and fragile, so don't drop it!) but I would love to see you do a BJD. Thank you everyone who commented on my kitty! I'm definitely going to resculpt in Sculpey and see where that goes.
I have been lurking in this thread since it was made, and have been pining after time to participate. Hope you don't mind me jumping in so late. Anyways, biiig animal eyes here I come! So, I was at work, and misread todays challenge a little bit. I Did not notice that it was supposed to be anime and not animal, so I hurriedly scuilpted this Horus head after getting back from work. Very crude, but with potential I think. 1. SD-sized 2. Best feature is the creases around the eye 3. Worst feature must be the neck, but I think it'll look better if I work on it some more 4. I learned that I can sculpt really, really fast 5. Critique welcome? Yes, absolutely I used paperclay, and as it is still wet I have only finished one side of the head in order not to squish the details. This was tons of fun, and I really want to finish this head later on. Here is Horus, modeled on a CP type3 body And for fun I added a little colour here are some comments for you all: Pouty lips TheFontBandit Lovely, kissable lips. Xen Wonderful chin and the expression. Nice proportions too I think. I like the lipstyle. Armeleia Cool smirk and cheekbones Kaye Cute as a button Logodae Nice proportions Quilibet I like the straight nose Keanna He looks like an african mask, a little scary in fact. BloodLath A happy go lucky kind of guy, he made me smile. Kiomi Nice profile Patl It looks like a piece of art Darkmothflame Grumpy little thing. Looks like she'll be even grumpier if you tell her she looks really cute when grumpy, so I won't do that. Zidora So cute. The nose Miss_Pygmalion Hope you don't mind me saying so, but I actually think he looks like one of those women who just demands attention when they walk into a store. TheFontBandit I would love to see a bit more chin on this guy. xen That is one cool rabbit. Kaye I like how the crooked mouth makes it look like he is pondering on doing something really bad. Armeleia A little refining and I think he would have lovely, manly, sharp features. Logodae lol, that was fun. What a happy guy he is. Sommersdai She looks like a scary troll-mom. BloodLath I just love your door-mouse. Like a loth of other people, I would love to see it finished. Patl If you put the ears more on top of the head i think he'll look even better. Very nice expression. corchen It looks good from the front, but the profile looks a little flat. have you tried to put the plasticine in the fridge, that might help on the stickyness. darkmothflame I think the mouth looks a little small, probably because the nose is wider than the mouth. partially closed eyes armeleia really sweet and a little sly. Kaye Nice. Nefla I like the nose. xen I like him, how nice to see some wrinkles and baggy eyes. Sommersdai He reminds me of Shrek. Patl I actually liked the bulgy eyes. So much expression. Logodae Nice proportions from the front, but a little too much head from the side. BloodLath He looks a bit sunken in, maybe he would look healthier if you filled him in a bit. Darkmothflame This time the mouth looks too big. She looks really angry though. BEEEEEEG ANIMAY EYES BloodLath that one made me lol at work today Kaye Why do all your sculps look equally adorable? A little too flat between the eyes for my taste though. Logodae A really sweet expression. Nice proportions too. Sommersdai Fun sculpts. Nefla I like the cheeks. armeleia The cat got a sister! Patl Funny bulldogish alien, really sweet. Darkmothflame She looks very sad. I really like her tummy.
<jaw drop>skumring.... wow.... just... wow..... <sighs> it seems like a let down to post my pics now after such a gorgeous sculpt! anyway... here is my anime entry -- i used this as an opportunity to start on imogen's faceplate (it still has quite a ways to go before it's done though....) size : yo-sdish.... best part : her nose i think... though it needs work worst part : the roughness from the glue used to hold the paper clay on and her cheeks i think.... what i learned : it's hard for me to do chibi things ><;;;;; critique - why not? and here she is on what i have done of her body....
*Really just checking her email and NOT reading den of angels....* Skumring- oh wow! Horus is unbelieveable!
skumring - wow, I'm glad you misread. That is a fantastic head! I love the feather wig, too. Your lines are very crisp and clean on the design work around the eye. I never knew you sculpted - always just thought you were a great photographer. darkmothflame - This is a neat little head! The profile is very cute, I think. I think from the front, it might be a improved a little by adding a little bit of blending clay between the cheeks and the mouth. Right now, the mouth looks a little like it's not really unified with the rest of the face. I think the symmetry looks realy great though! *fidgits* I want to go hoooooome. Just another 15 minutes. Thank goodness the workweek is almost over!
Armeleia I do the odd sculpt now and then, it is nice to work in 3D when I get fed up with 2D. The feathers are actually just a skinned bird I plopped on the head for the sake of the pictures. Horus looked a little strange bald. Thank you for the comment on my skill as a photographer, I really appreciate it.
Xen .. sorry you can't do anymore .. I looked forward to seeing your sculpts each day. armeleia .. thanks .. I can see what you mean about the eye now that I look closer!! Love your cats .. would be interested to see them finished. PatL .. as usual you come up with something wonderful and imaginative .. I so admire your work. skumring .. WOW!!! what a great head. Glad you decided to join us ... can't wait to see more of your work. darkmothflame .. you are doing great .. can I suggest you fill in a little at the sides of the top lip. Add a little clay and sort of spread the clay out from just above the outer corner of the lips to the cheeks .... does that make sense!!? Sorry I am pathetic at explaining things. Sorry if I missed anyone.
heh, yeah, i know about her mouth needing a lot of work ^^;;;; but thanks all! now i just need to figure out how to do poutier mouths... (most of my heads seem to be pouting already )
Well Fiddle!!! One of the few nights I can stay up late and sculpt, I finish in record time. 1. MSD-sized 2. Best feature is bottom lip and the eyes. ( My 1st that are carved out, and closed.) 3. Worst feature must be the ears 4. I learned that I can sculpt faster if I just don't fall apart when the clay is not giving me what I want. Go with clay, don't fight it. 5. Critique welcome? Yes! Since I picked this challenge whoever is next can choose for tomorrow night.
Okay, one day I will learn how to upload my photos to the website ftp thingie without having to wait on the husband...here you go. 1. Size is about the same as Supia Yan (3 inches or so), paperclay over styrofoam ball 2. best feature- I was really pleased with her little nose...my noses usually get out of control and become huge 3. worst-eyes, I need to fix them still and we shant discuss the lack of ears...(I redid them tons of times and couldn't be happy with any of them 4. Learned...I can do wierd and ugly pretty easy, making something intentionally pretty is hard! 5. Crits-go for it For some reason I keep calling her Lily
Bloodlath, would you like to pick the theme again tomorrow or tag someone else? Bloodlath - I have to say, you're really just improving in leaps and bounds. Each head you're posted has been markedly better than the last. You should really be proud of yourself, you're really awesome. I laughed at this one, though - he has the best expression! Such a pout! Very expressive, and very much a character. For critique, not sure what to give. Just more blending would be nice, to take off some of those sharper "lines" where your fingers made angles with the clay. Sommersdai: Awww, what a sweetheart! I like this one a lot. The expression is very welcoming and open. THe eyes are a very nice shape, and the lips are also very well-sculpted. For critique, I think I'd suggest considering the brow/forehead a little. In profile, it seems as though the nose slopes from the tip to almost the top of the head... as opposed to leveling out at the bridge where it meets the forehead. If you continue with her, you might also consider giving her a bit more cranium so she can keep her wigs on. My head for today: He's kinda a chubster. That said, I sort of like him that way! I think he's really kinda charming... though if I were to continue with him, he'd get sanded down a bit. He's a little bit bigger than mature-mini. 1. The good: I like his expression 2. The bad: Lumpy and bumpy, the eyes are uneven. 3. I learned more about the components of an expression. I also learned that there isn't really a relationship between what I want to sculpt and what I actually produce. I can set out to sculpt a pouty YoSD-sized head and end up with a pouty man. Who knew? 4. Critique is okay. He fails the asian aesthetic again, I think. I think my problem is that I am still a n00b to sculpting (I'm a 2d girl), so I'm not comfortable enough yet to stylize. As a result, my sculpts are a little bit literal.
Nice pouts, y'all. Sorry, too tired for coherent comments. Best photo I got, but you're not missing much. :P
I didn't have much time to play today so I only did the face. She is bigger than SD size .. kind of grew out of control!! 1. Best bit .. I like the nose 2. Worst bit .. everything is soooooooooo lopsided 3. What I learned .. keep an eye on the size of my sculpt. Critique .. yes please! BloodLath .. love that pouty mouth. Sommersdai .. that's such a pleasing expression .. very cute. Armeleia ... I like you head very much Logodae .. can't really see much!!!
Well, my camera needs new batteries, so I dont think I will be able to post anymore, but I will still sculpt what you guys do!

Size: mature mini Best feature: his pouty lips! Worst: my profiles are still too flat. And I'm missing the asian aesthetic by a mile, I think. Also, he's so not symmetrical. I learnt: to sculpt in front of a mirror! Then I can use my own face as a guide, and I can look at what I'm sculpting in the mirror to help with symmetry. Not tha it made much difference to how wonky he is. Critique; sure! I'm only going to critique from this last challenge, otherwise I'll be here all day - although, skumring? you have to finish and cast Horus, I WANT ONE. BloodLath: I love him! It's nice to see a more mature sculpt. One thing I would say - his cheeks seem a bit flat. Maybe they should be a little more hollow, if anything? Sommersdai: so cute! Maybe a bit more definition between the nose and forehead? Although I do quite like the way she has a real roman nose thing going on there! armeleia: Aw, he looks so sad. And yeah, he is kinda chubby, which means you lose a lot of definition in his features - tricky to work around in something so small. Kaye: critique, what critique? Ths sculpt is gorgeous! I love that she still has a milk blister on her top lip. And that nose is perfection. Only thing I'd say is that the face (not the head, just the features) all slant up to the left. Which just makes her more realistic, to my eyes.
Sommersdai - Oh he is so happy. armeleia - What a great expression. I like the shape of the eye on the views right. Can not tell a whole lot about the other one. I have to agree with you, This last sculpt of mine was suppose to be a pouty 5 year girl... I got a little old man was well. I am finding that my sculpting is like my acting. I can do wonderful characters, not so good a doing normal. Logodae - A little burry Please retake the picture I would love to se his details. Kaye - I love her baby face. But I understand about watching the size of the sculpt. They can grow larger than intended very quickly.
hey guys, really sad - family stuff totally ate up last night and this morning, so not going to get to try this challenge -- but you guys are doing awesome sculpts! this has been such a neat thing to participate in.... skumring - absolutely wonderful! hope you will post more pics of Horus!
