Head-a-day Challenge. 3/2 Challenge up - Open mouth! -O-

Feb 20, 2008

    1. I've been trying to make myself sculpt more lately.. and I find that the more I sculpt, the better I get. (Relatively speaking, of course, I still mostly suck.) I've also been trying to just DO IT and sculpt, rather than just over-analyzing my progress to the point of getting nothing done.

      In the spirit of patl's "BJD in a Week challenge," I would like to challenge myself to rough-sculpt a different head every day for a week.

      My thought is that in a few days (I need to buy some more clay first), I'll post a description or theme for a head, or some kind of guideline or tutorial to follow... and then the first person to produce a head meeting that theme would get to pick the next one. People who take longer than the 24 hours can post their stuff late, but the emphasis is on actually producing something within a span of a few hours. Several somethings over the course of the week, hopefully!

      Would anyone else be interesting in trying? No need to be self-conscious, most of the stuff I'll be sculpting will probably be nothing to write home about suck. But way I see it, if I learn even one thing from each head, it'll be a successful experiment!

    2. I love motivational stuff like this (is a world-class procrastinator extrordinaire!) I would love to participate!

    3. This sounds very interesting indeed...a good challenge....I'll give it a go!....Must stock up on materials.......

      xen

    4. I'm in the process of scultping a head right now but this challenge seems fun!

      I need to stock up on more clay this weekend though. Do you have any idea for a starting day?

    5. W00t!

      I'm in! need to go buy clay....

    6. Maybe we can start on Monday to give everyone a chance to buy clay? *cheers* I'm so glad others are going to play too!

    7. Sign me up! That sounds fun! ^______^

    8. What Clay do you all use?

    9. Oh, I'd love to participate. Monday sounds lovely. I may have enough clay for one head, but certainly not seven. X3

    10. i'd love to do this for the dolls i'm doing... but they use a face plate system... could i do a face plate a day?

    11. That's a great idea!! I'd be game for it if I am able to get some clay in time. Worst case scenario I'll cheer from the sidelines :D

    12. Question--- do you mean start to finish, clay chunk to resin cast, or like... just a SCULPT a day? >>; Cause casting is exspensive.

    13. She means a sculpt per day, no casting. I'd think a faceplate would be fine too.

    14. Twig-- are you going to join? It would be neat if we could get you on it! :P

    15. Oh, personally, I use Super Sculpey, but I know many use paper clay, and perhaps Laidoll. ^^

    16. Sounds like a fun challenge. I'm in. :)

      Liat: I use Super Sculpey Firm... but for this I might use plasticine. It's softer, so it's faster to work with. It's only good for practice, though, since it's non-hardeniing. (Sculpey can be baked to harden it, and paper clay is air-dry.)

    17. i use either premier or a mix of premier and la doll (both of them are paper clays)

    18. I found that Creative Paperclay is almost Exactly the same as ladoll clay, in consistency, color and dry time.

      Its way cheaper and you can do wholesale orders through them! http://www.paperclay.com

      I would love to join in on the sculpting a head a day, but I want to finish the body of my doll first, so i can make the head proportional to it.

      But I am excited to see the results!

    19. Interesting!! Takes me longer than a day to sculpt a face so is it possible just to sculpt one a week instead of one a day!!? LOL

    20. Ok, I will have to give this a go...that means a trip to get clay over the weekend :)

    21. Keanna> Just a sculpt, and "rough sculpt" as I said in the first post. Molding is too expensive... and I hate doing it anyway. I'm sure not going to mold anything that I don't think is worth casting.

      Faceplate a day is fine, head a day is fine... however you can participate is great! When I do this, I'm going to be focused on the basic face/jaw/etc region and I'm not going to worry about sculpting the back or a headcap. Just gonna try to get down a basic face. My main goal is going to be symmetry, I think! My faces sort of "pull" to the artist's left. Sigh.

      I'm going to be using Creative Paperclay. I've never used it, so there's another fun learning curve. ;) I like Apoxie Sculpt best, but it's too expensive to use for practice.... and since I sculpt over a styrofoam base, I can't bake it so Super Sculpey is out. (Kurodi Emi, I'm glad to know that the Paperclay is like LaDoll! I've always wanted to try that out.)

    22. Oh, this is a neat idea - I'm in. I've been wanting to do something like it since I saw Patl's thread.
      I only hope I can keep up... and keep track of the time difference ;)

      I'll probably use either paper clay (air-drying and therefore maybe a bit slow for this kind of project) or Fimo puppen, a kind of clay that has to be baked to harden. I have never tried this kind of clay before, so that's gonna be interesting too.

    23. i'm going to end up using different clays each day i think --- i love the grey super sculpy, but i have premier and ladoll to use too...

      i love fimo puppen - its one of my favorites, but i don't have any around yet...

      ok, so the aim isn't so much to do a finished, ready for production head in one day, as to loosen up, experiment, and maybe come up with heads we will want to go back to and finish at our leisure????

    24. What is fimo puppen? Is it different from the little blocks of Fimo at Michaels?

      And yeah, patl, these are more just exercises in stuff like proportion, symmetry, expression, etc... more like practice than pressure. *grin* Maybe trying to use someone else's method (i.e. by all of us following a particular tutorial on a particular day), focusing on a particular feature (i.e. Big lips or small nose) or branching out from what is our usual "style" (like if someone said to do an anthro head one day, or model our heads after a particular character in a drawing).

      Maybe if we all end up actually producing a bunch of heads, we can do something else fun with them. Like choosing a best head to finish to casting-quality, and a worst head to send to someone else as a project to play with. Who know? I'm personally looking forward to having a slew of different-sized heads on sticks at the end of the week... ;)

    25. Different exercises like the ones you propose would be great. Can't wait to see what people will come up with.

      Don't know how much fimo puppen differs from the small ordinary Fimo blocks but it looks a bit different and is sold in bigger packages.

    26. <grin>

      actually - i think its puppenfimo, i hadn't had my caffeine yet this morning.

      it actually has some different characteristics than fimo classic and is much stronger than fimo soft. It bakes with a kind of translucency and seems to me to be a bit easier to work than fimo classic. its evolved over the years - and friends tell me it is much less prone to moonies than the other fimos now.

      http://www.clayalley.com is a great source for any of these clays... (nice lady, good prices, fast delivery, answers questions happily, I have no relationship with her)

    27. I've been pondering on this because it definitely takes me over a week and then some to finish a face. When is the starting day? I'll see if I can keep up with the rest of the group.

      This site could be helpful in answering some questions on polymer clays http://www.jaedworks.com/clayspot/polyclay-faq/

    28. *bites the bullet* Okay I'll play too...

    29. Sounds like fun - I'm in....
      :D

    30. I'm in. I only tried sculpting once but I decided Super Sculpey is not my style. :sweat I'm eager to try Paperclay though, so I'll swing by the store this weekend and pick some up! I like the idea of working on heads for practice without too much pressure. When I start something I always feel pressured to finish, to make it right instead of just using it as a learning experience.

    31. Oh, that's a fantastic idea! I'm in, assuming I have time to pick up more clay some time soon. If not, I suppose no-one would kill me if my first head or so was made out of black plasticine, right? ;)

    32. sounds fun. may i play as well? :)
      i already have clay

    33. Thanks for all the replies :) I think I'm too green for this project,having neevr sculpted a doll before,but I think I might have a god at it very soon :)

    34. What the hay, I'll push myself by joining. I've been in the 2 D realm so long not sure I remember how. This should be fun... or at least interesting.

    35. I'll post the first theme when I get home from work on Monday night. :)
      still haven't decided what it will be. I may have my roommate choose so I don't have a jump on anyone else by knowing ahead of time and planning.

    36. Awww, it's Monday night here in Aussie!! I won't get to see this 'til Tuesday...drat the time difference..we are a day ahead!.I hope I don't miss out!.....I'd better get off to bed now so as I can be up very early...lol...*yawn*.....

      xen

    37. hey Armeleia,

      does this mean we have until tuesday evening to do the head? do we need to set somesort of artificial deadline so we know when we need to post by to stay somewhat on schedule? (in case we all dither around waiting for each other to post first......)

    38. Oh man, I'm excited! ^_____________^ Hope today goes by fast for you, Armeleia!

      Bouncing off of what Patl said, maybe a 'by the board' deadline? It's easier to post according to board time because it's consistent, and everyone can check it. ^_^

    39. I'd go with 24 hours... though if you finish one outside of the 24 hours, you should post it up too!

      I have to go to a movie tonight, so I'm going to be postponing my own sculpting until about 7:30.

      However, I'll toss out today's challenge now:
      When you post your head, please include the following with the pics:
      1. Approximate size, medium, etc.
      2. Best feature
      3. Worst feature
      4. One thing you learned
      5. Critique welcome? Yes, no?

      Please comment on each other's sculpts too!

      Whoever sculpts the first head, please wait until the 24 hours is up from this challenge. (So don't post your challenge any earlier than 5:00 pm EST on 2/26).

      Good luck everyone!!! :chocoberry :chocoberry

    40. Are "outside" critiques welcomed as well?
      I was going to join in but, I started back to work on my full doll ^^;;;

      Good luck to everyone playing along!

    41. blast!!!!

      and here i am stuck at work....

      can't wait to see everyone's heads!!!!!!

    42. Well I finished my sculpt... or was that I quit my sculpt. Either way bed time for me. Can not wait to see what everyone dreamed up.

    43. Well, I'm running on only an hour and a half of sleep last night, then a full day of work before sculpting. >_< So this is not a finished product by any means, but I think it's about all I'm going to be able to do tonight. :sweat I'm going to have to drop out of the running for today's challenge (and get some sleep!), but I thought I'd share what I did come up with. Maybe for tomorrow's challenge I'll be able to devote more time to smoothing things out and finishing.

      Lips are always the hardest thing for me to sculpt... :doh This is also only my second attempt at sculpting a head from scratch, even just for practice. So I'm actually pretty proud of the basic lip shape I have going on. I focused mostly on the lips and only did a rudimentary version of everything else.

      1. Approximate size: 43cm-sized head
      2. Best feature: Lips, because that's the only thing I really worked on.
      3. Worst feature: Everything else!
      4. One thing you learned: How to make the lips look a little fuller and not so flat.
      5. Critique welcome? No thanks, since it needs a LOT of work.

      [IMG]

      (Sorry, a bit of cat hair somehow worked it's way into the Super Sculpey, but by the time I realized it I liked the shape and didn't want to mess it up by digging out the hair. =P)

      Tomorrow I'm going to try to swing by the craft store and pick up some paperclay. Super Sculpey is not my favorite medium. >_<

    44. Challenge # 1 Lips.........

      Hey, I've just finished mine....phew...I started at 11.30 am and finished just now 1.45pm.
      The pressure was on..lol.. Do I wait 'til it's 5.00pm USA time? before I post my pics.

      I'll just wait anyhow......

      TheFontBandit.....I love those lips.....so pouty and very cute!
      Can't wait to see all these lips!!!

      EDIT:..........

      I'm back....3.30 posting pics........

      Worst feature........lol...skinny face...long chin...huge top lip....
      Learned...........This is fun..just enjoy.....
      Critique..........Yes please......

      I had to put a bit of Blush on her lips...lol..like me, I can't go out without my lippy on....

      xen

    45. You should post pics now if you have them! ;)

    46. I don't know if I can swing a head a day.... I'm not that prolific a sculptor :sweat I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with though. Congrats to TheFontBandit for being the first to post an entry. Very pouty :chocoberry

    47. FontBandit - those are beautiful lips! I do hope you'll continue with that head. That mouth is a great start.

      By the time I got home from the movie, I wasn't in much of a sculpting mood... but here I am anyway. ;)

      This was my first time using paperclay... and I don't think I like it. It's a little too soft for me... I just kept... I dunno. MASHING things! :sweat I ended up flattening instead of just smoothing, and this face ended up being very flat. I can't blame the media entirely, but it didn't help.

      Power to you, those of you who can use paperclay!

      I spent about an hour and a half on mine, I think? I went from about 8 to 9:30pm.
      Lumpy as hell! XD It's around mini size.

      [IMG]

      1. The best part was the line of the forehead, brow, and cheekbone from this angle:
      [IMG]

      2. The worst feature was everything else. *sweat* If I had to pick one weakness, it would probably be the mouth. It was too wide.

      3. With this sculpt, I learned a bit more about the structure of the face. Specifically, how the brow ridge is actually shaped, and the shape of the muscle at the edge of the mouth - the jowls, I guess. I also had fun giving this thing cheekbones like golf balls. In general, it was just a fun head to play with. Once I realized it was going to be ugly, I just experimented.

      I love sculpting big noses. I tried to do a smaller nose... and I hated it. ;) This sculpt has a very small nose compared to my usuals lately, which are real honkers.

      [IMG]

      4. It's a little too lousy for critique. Maybe tomorrow's head.

    48. Here's my effort .. excuse the grubby bits .. so hard to keep sculpy clean when I have grubby fingers and a grubby work area to start with. :o

      1. Approximate size, SD
      2. Best feature .. lips maybe?
      3. Worst feature .. lopsidedness
      4. One thing you learned .. clean up my work area before sculpting
      5. Critique welcome? Yes,

      Don't know if I'll ever bother to sand her smooth.
      Sculpted from Sculpt 111

      [IMG]

      Sorry about the picture quality... my phone is apparently much better at being a phone than a camera. :sweat

      1. Scale: Mini... more of a "bobble-head" mini than true 1/4 scale
      2. Best: I'm pretty happy with the lower lip.
      3. Worst: Plenty to choose from... but probably the eyes.
      4. Learned: A bit more about how the lower lip works... the way the sides sort of flow into it while the front curls.
      5. Critique: Always appreciated. :)

    50. [IMG]

      [IMG]

      Think I spent about an hour sculpting. Very rough. Ha, I always somehow sculpt very androgynous heads. I don't think I'll even bake him, but wanted to sculpt something for today. ^^

      1. Size: Roughly MSD
      2. Best: Like the lips and I love sculpting noses
      3. Worst: Can't sculpt human ears at all. The eyes are rather ugly, too, but that's mostly because I didn't even hollow the head.
      4. Learned: Sculpting eyes down lower makes the sculpt friendlier and more feminine. Too - large lips can be quite hideous.
      5. Critique: Sure, though there's too much to critique. X3

    51. Kudos to all that had a chance to work on their head a day challenge. Each effort shown here is great:thumbup Great lips on all the sculpts;)

      I wish I could take my clay to the office but I can't do that at my job:(:sorry

    52. First up, the head!!

      [IMG]
      [IMG]

      1. Approximate size, medium, etc. Nearly SD, maybe a 1/2 a CM or two off of what it really should be; made from Plastinia Grey, non-hardening modeling clay, used sculpting tools, but mainly my fingers and a needle.
      2. Best feature I love the nose. I suck at doing noses, but I'm proud of this one!
      3. Worst feature The eyes-- they turned out HORRENDOUS.
      4. One thing you learned when sculpting, understand where the muscles are- in this case, the ones that control mouth movement.
      5. Critique welcome? Yes, no? Sure, but I probably already know where it sucks, and how it does so. XP

      Note== I was going for a kind of kissy face, like the one you make when you are teasing someone. :3 I thought it kinda fit.

      ~~~Critiques and Compliments~~~
      I really enjoyed looking at each individual head. ^__^ I'm glad we got the oppurtunity to do this little project.
      I decided to take each side of the coin in each response for critique. I do not mean anything of the following in any sort of mean, malicious, or rude manner. These were meant to be taken in the lightest of tones (as I tried to reflect through wording! You all deserve the upmost respect!), so please pardon me if my word choice may not have been what it should be.
      Xen - Oh, but I love the long face! It's very different from what we normally see in the BJD's, which endears it to me! ^_^ The only thing that gets be is the over exaggerated lip bump. :P
      Armeleia - I love the high cheek bones and the SHAPE of the lip! Lips come in all different sizes and shapes, and the one you chose was gorgeous. ^__^ But- gotta agree with the lumpiness there! XD
      Kaye - I don't know why, but you always manage to sculpt the most darn cute noses EVER!! I love it! I think the only thing I could critique on really would be the distance between the eyes.
      Logodae - When I saw your head, it really made me smile. It reminds me of a very happy child, simply taking in a moment to keep it. However, I have to complain about the size- I can't bother you to make such a cute sculpt if it wouldn't fit any of my dolls... :sweat
      Quilibet - I really love the proportions you chose. They seem very delicate and happy, and the lips are gorgeous to me. Something gets me about the eyes though- I think it may be the lack of eyebrow ridges! :o
    53. Wow...I'm very impressed with all these lovely heads.....so much fun....their are so many talented people on here........
      Critique.....sorry guys but I am the worlds worst critique...I can never say anything bad about anyone/anything........;)
      Armeleia......I love your little head.....the cheekbone are wonderful and I love the top lip, how it curves up........GR8 job....
      Kaye......What can I say, just a darling...sweet button nose and beautiful mouth....I love her.........I can imagine her all finished.......GR8 job...
      Logodae.........Awww so tiny and so sweet, the closed eyes make her look so peaceful...I love the ears....and the mouth looks beautiful..a soft smile...GR8 job.....
      Quilibet..........Love these lips....the shape is lovely and I like how they look like they are speaking......love the nose too...such a pretty face...GR8 job..
      Keanna...........I love the "kissy lips"...so pouty...and from the front view it looks like they are saying 'cool'........GR8 job.....
      I love seeing them all......
      Armeleia.....when this week is over can we "fix" all the bits that need fixing on our heads and show them again with the changes?......
      All the best,
      xen :)
    54. Alas, I was at a funeral yesterday, but I'll be in on the next one, for sure!
    55. wow these heads look great, I wish I was able to work on dolls
    56. Ok here it goes. Please for give the newness of it all this is my 1st sculpt ever. Uses Modeling clay and my hands. XP
      1. Approximate size: MSD
      2. Best feature: Cheeks?
      3. Worst feature: Everything!
      4. One thing you learned: Really cheap modeling clay does not smooth, and that I should find some tools to work with besides my beefy fingers.
      5. Critique welcome? Yes, since it needs a LOT of work. But please be kind.
      [IMG]
      [IMG]
    57. Wow, everyone is so talented! This seems like a lot of fun, I want to play next round <3
    58. darn I wish I had had time for this... We have ahuge rsh at work and I'm too exhausted this weekend to do it.
      When things are less crazy I'll try my hand.
    59. Xen is today's first complete head! Xen, please post the next challenge at around 5pm EST. :)
      And wow, I am so excited to see everyone's talent and their ability to do a head in one go. You guys rock! Maybe next week we can do a finishing project - like pick your best and clean it up or something.
      Xen - Awesome head, very reminscent of Dollstown. I love the mouth! It has very awesome lips.
      Kaye, you did this head in one go? And you're a slow sculptor? :sweat This is awesome. It looks so finished already and it's so professional. You really have a very definite style to your sculpts - they all look like they could be related! For critique, I don't see much, except that the head has a little bit of a slant to it... in the same direction as this \. It's very minute, though.
      Logodae - what an adorable little head!! I love the nose and mouth. It has the sweetest profile too, and a very nicely defined brow ridge. And wow, so smooth. *shiney eyes* For critique, the only thing I see is tha the view's left eye is slightly lower and longer than the right... and the right side of the mouth is slightly higher.
      Quilibet - what a lovely nose and mouth! I adore the straight, elegant line of the nose... and the mouth is definitely very full and lovely. Beautiful. The only critique I have is general symmetry - the viewer's left eye is further from the bridge of the nose than the right and the jaw is slightly uneven. She's gorgeous though - very elven and delicate.
      Keanna - Yay, a fellow cheekbone lover. :D i think the best feature is the mouth - it has that sexy diva look to it. It's a very expressive face, looks like it's in the middle of speaking. For critique, the head is uneven, but it's a nice start... I'm hardly one to judge there.
      Bloodlath - What an awesome, cheerful face! The ears are adorable as well. For critique, I think smoothing will help it a lot for looking less angular. The brow ridge may be a bit too defined, but I think general smoothing will fix that as well. Awesome first head!
    60. Bloodoath - :O Using fingers AND just a first head?! Ugha! Go get tools! If this gorgeous head is what you do without them, I'm dying to see what you can do with tools! Great job! ;)
