Have your dolls hurt you?

Jan 20, 2009

    1. I took some skin off my hands sanding Alba, and apparently I have a mild resin allergy because I broke out all over my hands and arms when I was doing her. Mild contact dermatitis, nothing too serious but I was a bit itchy there for a few days after sanding. I was wearing respiratory protection and eye protection but I never thought to wear gloves while sanding only while soaking her in the chemicals and stuff. Apparently loose resin dust and I are not compatible. Either that I'm allergic to the sanding blocks. Other than that so far my dolls have been fairly kind to me. I did have some muscle soreness from all that sanding work, and my hands were very sore after restringing my dolls but not much else, and that's true of almost anything I do these days. I'm not anywhere near elderly but I've got problems with severe arthritis in my hands, autoimmune thing, and my hands can cramp like crazy when I am trying to to certain things. Restringing is not something I particularly like to do. That's for sure...

    2. I pinched my fingers while restringing my girl...it always happens no matter how many different ways I tried it, maybe I am just clumsy by nature :P

    3. I was restringing a doll at a meet and poled the stringing tool threw my finger. there was blood XD
my dolls have pinched me and one or to have headbutted me. but nothing major.

    4. I've had my finger pinched while restringing and such things like that. XP

    5. I always hurt myself while restringing but until now nothing major, just scratching myself with S hooks, getting pinched, and removing a little of skin because of the pressure of the elastic.

    6. I've always heard stories of dolls pinching people really badly during restringing but it never happened to me until very recently... And even right after I finished, I was standing him up to make sure he was stable and I adjusted his knee and it almost broke the skin on my thumb! What the heck, doll.

    7. I'm not sure if it's a good thing but I'm proud to bring this thread to life with my non-functioning thumb now. Yay. :pout:

I had my first accident last night, a pierced thumb by an S-hook while I was trying to take the foot off of my beloved Raccoon Doll Nina. It was my first time doing this, alright. But I expected something like this and was very careful and looking even professional until the last moment  I took off two hands and one foot nicely, but I had to pay the price of being a newbie, had I not??

Yes, she hurt me a lot. But I love her.

    8. Mhmm. The other day my Lorelei fell from her shelf, I was sitting underneath setting up for a shoot and she busted my lip. I have have cuts from her joints getting me and i had lacerations from restringing her.

    9. I got pinched in the arm by my girl, and the whole time I am thinking don't drop her and this hurts. I did not drop her thankfully.

    10. Definitely pinched by joints, and scratched trying to tightly re-string dolls ;u; re-stringing has been the most damaging to me lol. I hate doing it...

    11. My dolls really like to beat me up. Emrys and Dia, my two most floppy dolls that need to be restrung which I've been too lazy to do for a while headbutt me when I least expect it. I'll pose Emrys and if I'm holding him he'll fall back hitting me on the nose and if he's facing me he'll hit his forehead as hard as he can to mine. Dia isn't as abusive but he still likes to slap me with his tiny claws whenever I try to put a new outfit on him.

My Akagi doll has pinched me quite a few times after I've undressed him to put new clothes on him.

And Seth, my first doll which is a Soul Doll Juhl. I posed him standing up and when I turn just for a minute to reach for another doll or start working with another doll, he tips over and hits me in the back of my head.

    12. I've had minor bumps and scratches from them but usually nothing major.

The worst was when I had just restrung an old Iplehouse YID guy and was trying to pull the head s-hook and it slipped down into the neck hole, the end of the hook sunk into my finger and I was trapped and screaming! I couldn't pull it up enough to free myself with just one hand. My husband had to rescue me. Good thing I wasn't home alone like I usually am when I do doll stuff! I got my finger free, no blood but a lot of pain, and the s-hook at that point was lodged in the neck and took a lot more tugging and twisting to finally get it back up and get the head on.

    13. Lol i haven't been hurt by any of my dolls, but have had quite a good laugh reading some of these posts! Thank you!

    14. i think we can all bond over the evil s hooks

    15. So far got finger pinched by the joints while I tried to pose him. He almost slapped my nose once but missed because luckily I have a quick response to avoid :sweat

    16. I stabbed myself carving an eye opening once. Sanding my own finger. And of course glue gun burns... But that's nothing I'm not used to. I'm a cosplayer! Lol

    17. Yes, yes, yes! The usual pinching skin in joints, stabbing thumb with s-hooks and kicked by an errant limb flail but the other night my huge Nayuta Kenzo fell off the shelf and landed on my head. Fortunately he was unscathed by his antic, I suffered minor bruises.

    18. Oh, definitely. Just yesterday I was changing my newest guy's clothes and his torso joint pinched the skin between my thumb and and forefinger which hurt a lot.

    19. I was trying to take a doll's head off once and sliced my finger open on the S hook. She was strung way too tight...

    20. Nothing more than the usual getting pinched by joints.

    21. my newest girl has pinched my fingers several times lol ^-^ i've also gotten hot glue burns when making them their wigs ^-^
      not to mention getting punched in the face by one of my girls lol. Theeeen i dont know it you count this but theres the time i burnt my fingers with chemical glue when I was inserting magnets into one of dollies;
Then i really dont know if this one counts as much or at all but i have gotten a really sore back from the amount of time i've spent bent over my sewing machine making them clothes

    22. I was stringing my Bishonen House Steve kit and the leg S hook slipped from the wire I was using to pull the elastics out so I could put on the foot. The S hook embedded itself into my index finger while it was pinched between the hook and the calf piece! There was blood every where. I was able to finish the stringing, but my finger throbbed for quite a while. This has been my only injury in all the years I've had bjds.

    23. Restringing..... they wost ever was once when I had to get a head off but keep the body together... It was so tight, and I cared so much about not chipping resin by letting the string snap (and there for smashing the resin together), that I ended up really hurting my fingers... ;_;

    24. Can't say I've suffered much yet. No pinching, but perhaps because I own solely MSDs right now, and their stringing isn't the strongest. The most that I've managed is having my Dollzone Ro slap me in the nose while I was admiring his hand.

    25. I've only been pinched during the restringing process ,do to slippery parts.

    26. My minifee pinched and cut me while restringing it. Idk how it happened lol:sweat

    27. My friends doll body which she has lent me for the weekend (So I can see my current floating head child on an actual body) has very 'kicky legs' and I have been kicked in the chest a few times when trying to make him pose! He also has very hard boots on...it's a bid painful haha!

    28. My unoa bust almost broke my finger while I was restringing her, it has been passed 2 weeks since it and my finger it still hurts

    29. Every damn time I have to remove a head. I almost want to keep them loosely string just to give my poor finger a break.

    30. All my Doll Leaves dolls ended up being strung WAY too tight, as a result... FLAILINING LIMBS EVERYWHERE. Oh, and pinching. So yeah, I got hit and pinched a lot. Taking them apart for cleaning, body blushing and restringing was risky too, nearly had the hooks jab their way into my finger. :horror:

    31. I've had fingers and skin pinched between resin pieces when doing minor restringing and attaching heads, a couple bloody cuts from skin getting caught on s-hooks on an occasion (or more), with more possible I can't recall. It seems like I had one fall on me once, but I can't recall if that actually happened or if it's a thought planted into my memory somehow:lol:

    32. I've hurt my fingers while trying to reattach heads or hands. It takes a lot of strength to do it...at least to me.
It's only been minor, from what I can remember. I figure if I can't recall, then I haven't been injured by them.
If they did injure me though, I might have to paddle their bums.
Even that would be an exercise in futility, because Raziel would like that too much.

    33. Restringing my Kiddelf Girl's legs pinched my fingers so bad I had to have my dad finish the process! Totally worth it though.

    34. Only one of my dolls has ever hurt me, his joints have pinched me on occassion. It only ever happens when I mess with him too much in front of new people or in public spaces. I always feel like it's his way of saying stop "Stop fussing, I'm fine."

    35. Only my bank account - repeatedly.

    36. I wouldn't consider my doll personally hurting me but the stuff I make for my dolls do! XD I use cancer agent products without protective gear (because im stupid like that) and I've recently been feeling the symptoms that are on the warning label of that product and it really worries me.. I stopped using that product since I am done making crystal crowns for now but I recently opened it to fix a piece in the crown and I got the symptom the next day ;-;

    37. Haha, a had a couple of dolls with such a tight string inside that even touching them was kind of dangerous xD I restringed them as soon as possible, of course, and thus got some more cuts... And yes, using MSC and sanding the dolls without proper protection are definitely not the healthiest things to do (I'm stupid enough for this too).

    38. A friends doll has kicked me in the chin and while restringing my doll i stabbed myself eith the froal wire i use to thread joints several times

    39. I once had my index finger bleed because I scratched it while changing the hands of my doll. The s-hook can be tricky to deal with.
I also tripped over and fell in ground several times when I tried to hold my doll and walk fast at the same time. Fortunately I never broke my dolls, but my knees got bruises. Guess I should be more careful handling the dolls in the future

    40. I live with an (off-topic) MSD who slaps me. She's a little tightly strung. I'd loosen her up if she were mine, but I should not be the one to fix a flailing, kicky thing who belongs to my mother. At least a 16 inch doll can't hit very hard!

So far my new (on-topic) SD has been a perfect angel, but I'm sure her joints will pinch me sooner or later.

    41. Only financially XD

    42. I hadnt had any trouble with this at all, until one dark and stormy night... Okay, well, not stormy necessarily, but for whatever reason Ilya just felt like pinching me that night, like three or four times. My pointer finger hurt for days! (I really need to loosen his elastic.) I've also had Ilya fall and whack me on the head (in his defense, I sneezed and shook the desk). Thankfully his own head wasn't attached, and no real harm was done. :3nodding:

    43. Oh yes, the evil resin pinch is vicious!

    44. Well, the first doll I've gotten so far has kicked me in the glasses with both feet, and also has pinched me..so yes!

    45. Again, only the pinching from joints or restringing. It really does hurt, though!

    46. Shedding tears because of a doll, I restrung got a finger stuck in a thigh joint once. It was painful.

Shedding tears for a doll... well, when my job at the grocery store started making my wrists ache in an incredibly ominous way given I work in IT and my typing speed is literally my life, I looked at my layaway for my Doctor Strange doll, attempted to use compression wraps to lessen the hurting, they did not help, looked at the layaway again, and spent the next two months indulging in very dark jokes about how it would be hilarious if paying off the doll ruined my hands.

I got a new job and quit immediately after, but those were two incredibly painful months. But I finished paying off the layaway!

    47. The first time I was restringing one of my boys I ended hurting my hands. They were in so much pain from trying to restring him since I had to do it so many times because he was either too tight or loose. Then my back the next morning because of how I was sitting while doing so..ouch.

    48. I wound up being clawed by an s-hook the first time I changed hands. That was how I learned the chopstick method is not just a good idea, it’s darn near impossible do to it any other way.

    49. Ada's burnt me (boiling and sueding), and by extension scratched me and given me a sneezing fit (cutting up and then inhaling chalk pastels during faceup work). She's always been a brat!
In comparison, her friend the DD is an angel and only hurts my wallet :kitty2

    50. The hands are the worst part that suffer. And the wallet XoX.

    51. I've had my doll once clamp my finger's skin and it was really aching.

    52. Mostly just sore red marks on my fingers from trying to get her damn tiny hand hooks back onto the elastic while I was fitting a tight-sleeved dress on her.

(Though I used to work at an antique doll seller’s studio, and got pinched while stringing, burned by an iron, nicked with X-acto knives, pricked with sewing needles, bruised by heavy porcelain heads bumping my legs while I dressed big dolls...I’m not clumsy at all, but somehow I managed to injure myself almost every day at that job.)

    53. Oh yeah for sure. Especially trying to put back the head to the body using the pliers to bring the s hook, almost poked myself in the eye. Burned myself while trying to hot glue suede. Getting kicked by my dolls for being strung too tightly. Etc etc Yeah fun times.

    54. Once I try to string him, and the old headset cord I used for it, ripped and hit my left eye. After that I ordered stringing tools and never playing strings without my glasses...Yeah I am not really normal...

    55. Ughh... yes I have hurt myself while cleaning my doll (restring kinda thing) .. the elastic hit me very hard Lol

    56. I'd say the most painful incident was when the s-hook in a neck gave way. The tip of my index finger was in the top loop of the upper part of the s-hook and it got wedged very tightly against the top of the neck post. The more I tried to pull free, the tighter it got. I ended up having to ask someone to cut the strings inside the chest (which resulted in a purple finger tip as it only got tighter with all the maneuvering). Never again will I let that happen.

    57. Yes! I had a Doll Chateau Bella and I was taking off her extra wrist joints when the S-hook (which was very small and sharp) stabbed into my thumb and sucked back into the arm, so my finger skin was the only thing keeping enough tension for her to remain strung. It hurt so bad and really made me panic, I had to cut the elastic to escape D: So yeah she straight up drew blood haha

    58. THAT NOSE ATTACK IS NO JOKE

    59. I happen to be clumsy enough to get myself pinched & beaten up by my MSD while restringing. Not my brightest moment.
