Shopping Has anyone ever commissioned Aridede_faceup

Apr 7, 2022

    1. Has anyone ever commissioned a face up from aridede_faceup? I really like her work and would like to apply for a face up, but I am scared I will be scammed or not receive my doll head back after reading a thread about someone named CrazyClam stealing someone's doll head. I never commissioned anyone for a face up before so I am apprehensive about it. I really love her face up work and would really like to send my doll head to her. On her Instagram page she seems reputable and legit, but I would still like to know other people's opinions first before I make a decision.

I tried looking up more information on doa, but I can't find her on doa or I could be really bad with the search.

      Here is her Instagram:
      Login • Instagram

I don't know how to post photos, but here is an example of her work:
      Login • Instagram

I love her other works as well. I feel like I have seen her face up on doa, but I am not sure. Some of her face up looks like I might have seen it somewhere, but I am uncertain if I really saw her face up on doa or on Instagram. There was one photo that looked really familiar like I saw it somewhere on doa.

Is it possible to get a face up from one face up artist then have another face up artist complete the work because I like two face up artists. I would like adridede_faceup to do most of the face up then send the doll head to a different artist to add fantasty details. Would that be a stupid thing to do. Would it be okay to ask an artist to do a face up then have another artist add some other details such as fantasty details?

    3. Ooo I’ve definitely seen her on DoA posting her doll face-ups :D I haven’t commissioned her (although I would love too:XD:) but I have commissioned an artist from IG and was scammed  and managed to get my doll head back. I was really lucky tho and I did learn a few things before I look to commission someone from IG:

-Be sure to note if they do faceups regularly and if they post to their gallery regularly (either IG or FB, other social media places).
-Read all comments on some of the posted works. When I sent my head, I failed to read the warnings some people have posted :o. Another person had sent their head to be worked on- she also got her head back but almost a year later and from constant communication.
-If they do not require payment AFTER they finish faceup, skip them and look for another artist. You can’t open a dispute with like PayPal or anything once you send your doll :sweat I didn’t realize until after I sent my head :sweat

Anyway tho, I got my head back because there was an error with the address I sent it too and it just stayed at China Post for 6 months. The only money I lost was the shipping so I was really lucky to get my head back :kitty2. I sent it for another artist more reputable thru IG tho and got it back :kitty2

    4. Thanks @nyaaain and @krystina. I will take note of the advice. I want more detailed fantasy face up and I read on aridede_faceup blog that she doesn't do complicated fantasy face ups. I think I will have to look for a different face up artist. Her work is amazing though. I would like to send my doll to adridede_faceup for a nice face up then send my doll head again to another artist for fantasty face up added on, but that would be expensive and the timing doesn't match up because both artists are opening the slots around the same time.

The other artist face ups I really like is opening up soon. Her name is paulianne.dolls.

I shouldn't rush this. I think I should think more and wait for the next opening.

    5. Lol I sent my doll to Pauli after I got it back from the scammer :D Pauli is really a good artist and lovely to work with :whee: I think she would be able to do your fantasy in one go- plus she has the boldness like Aridede, but Aridede has the darker, thicker line work IMO :chibi They both have such gorgeous faceup styles :blush I got my head back in about 3 months I believe (I sent it during a holiday months tho) I wasn’t in a hurry to get my head back. I don’t have my doll complete tho, waiting on body , but she posted my doll on her IG- it’s the WS Arttong Dolce head :blush

    6. That's odd where did her page go. It says user not found. I was hoping to get a face up. Her page was just there. Did she delete her page or did I somehow offend her and get blocked? Does user not found mean I've been blocked? I don't think I was rude unless asking for more information from others is rude. I feel like now I was rude and got blocked somehow. Was I rude?

I guess I won't ever be able to buy from her :pout:, since I think I might have gotten blocked or something. I must have done something rude without knowing it. I wish I knew what I did wrong, so I won't repeat whatever I did wrong.

    7. I've met her in person, and she's a wonderful and sweet gal!

However, maybe it's because I'm a faceup artist myself, I have to say the start of your thread rubbed me a little bit the wrong way :sweat Actual scamming, artists running off with heads, is incredibly rare. Artists are aware of the trust people need to have in us, especially since BJDs are actually very unique in that regard because it requires people to send their belongings to work on vs only money. While some artists can be slow or maybe not deliver work you had hoped for, it is usually the worst that happens. Asking about an artist and in the same sentence basically insinuating they are a potential scammer in the making because someone else did something wrong is just...I don't know. Maybe it's because I know how people can be like. Give it three months and you'll have someone go "Oh I heard Aridede is a scammer" because they vaguely remember your thread. Seen it a million times happen already, and it's super hard to clear up things like that.
So next time maybe just say "Has anyone ever commissioned X? I haven't commissioned before and I'm interested in it, anyone can share their experiences?".

Regarding your other question: most artists are not willing to work on other artists' work. Also artists usually don't appreciate it when someone else works on top of their work. I certainly don't enjoy either of it. The former is stressful, since some steps once they have been done are annoying to work around. Additional sealing can also lighten up already painted details and so on. The latter, I don't want someone to potentially destroy my hard work or my vision. And for both artists, it is annoying in regards to credit as well.
Ask yourself, if you commission someone for a painting...do you think they'd appreciate it if you afterwards ask another person to paint on top of it? And do you think a lot of artists would want to even do that? Faceups are no different in that regard, the doll is the canvas and the paintjob is the artwork.
So it's better to commission an artist for the full work. That way it's less of a hassle for everyone involved.

A lot of artists take upfront payment though, so it might be hard to find someone that doesn't. In most art circles it's common partial payment is at least made at the beginning.
I personally years ago did not take it upfront, until I had customers that changed their minds mid-commission (because they rather wanted to buy a new doll than pay for a customization I had already started) OR because they suddenly couldn't pay me once I was done. Latter ended with me having someone's doll lying around at my place like a hostage :horror: And some had the nerve then to say I could just wipe it before shipping, as if my time and materials hadn't been wasted already. From then on on I always took payment beforehand.
Some also require it to purchase materials (sealants are expensive), or because it's their day job.

    8. @Ara
Thanks for the advice and educating. I'm not that good at communication and wording my thoughts well. I can understand your points and understand now I came off as rude. I thought scammers and heads being stolen was common because I kept seeing people mentioning scammers recently on Instagram before that I never really thought about it.

I didn't mean to insinuate that she is a scammer, but I can understand you could see it that way. Next time I will try to write down my thoughts that isn't confusing or insinuating, but I can't really guarantee I will be able to word my thoughts in a way that is respectful and well worded. Of course, I will try to be respectful and polite because I think I am being respectful and polite, but I can understand why people might not see it that way, since I'm just really terrible at communicating.

It's something I probably won't get better in because of some other reasons that is something I can't really fix. Writing this was actually hard because I had to think really hard how to word this in a way that I think didn't come off wrong or anything. It's actually hard for me to communicate. It took a lot of editing and thinking if this sounded alright. Do I make sense? I'm starting to make myself confused. Going back and trying to see if I might offend people again with this post. Well I hope I came off clearly as I could.

I don't like being rude or ruining people's days or rubbing people the wrong way. I don't like conflicts or drama. I feel like I made of mess somehow with my bad communication skills.

    9. Yes I agree, most do take payment upfront which I think is a good idea- makes a record of exchange plus you aren’t wasting the artists time or making excuse why you don’t have the money. I was surprised this person wanted payment afterward which I was not used to before (and agreed to it stupidly :sweat) but lesson learned :chibi And wow you got to meet Aridede?! That’s pretty cool, I’d love to meet faceup artist or just to watch them work :D You meet her at a bid convention?

    10. Aridede is a reputable faceup artist with a long list of happy clients and an extensive gallery of past commissions available on her instagram. A little bit of research goes a long way in this hobby, especially in terms of finding out if someone is reputable or not.

    11. I would like to go to a bjd convention as well someday, but I get really shy and insecure because I have commincation problems it seems to lead to problems.

Doll conventions look really fun. I would like to meet aridede as well and talk about her face ups. I mean I can't buy her face up anymore, but that is fine. I would like to learn how and why people get into bjds and decided to do face ups. Did they get into face ups because they are naturally good at art or get better as time went on.

I always want to ask people things, but again I'm too afraid of offending people I just can't tell if I will.

I saw some doll conventions on youtube. Seeing all those beautiful dolls is a fun way to pass the time. I think I spent several hours watching the convention videos. I actually didn't know about conventions until a few years ago. I don't want to go alone though, but no one shares my interest in dolls in real life.

I acutally been scammed more times then I want to count. It's made me really nervous and cautious. I lost so much money it is upsetting. Luckily, it wasn't on bjds, but on off topic dolls.

I think sometimes face up artists or bjd artists do livestream instagram of their work. I've only seen it once or twice. It wasn't on face ups, but the artist was tinkering with the joints of the bjd. I am not knowledgeable enough to know what exactly the artists was doing. It was interesting.

That would be fun to see a livestream of a face up at a convention or online.

      @Ara
That makes sense to take the money upfront. I couldn't imagine canceling an order I commissioned to an artist. I would feel guilty that the artist put so much work into the doll for it to be canceled, and not properly paid. That's like working for free almsot.

That makes sense what you said about the artist canvas analogy . I never thought of it like that. It's nice to hear other people's perspectives. For me personally, if I ever learned to do face ups and be paid for doing face ups which would be a dream job for me I wouldn't be offended. It acutally takes a lot to offend me because I had lots of people treat me badly, so I just don't get offended as easily anymore. I think I would have in the past. I think all the bad stuff that's happened to me made me immune to whatever people throw at me. I understand why it would make artists upset though. The only thing that really offends me is when someone is being racist.

I'm glad I joined doa I am learning lots of things and people are telling me if I come off as rude which means I can learn and improve. It's hard to tell for me.

Oops, I accidentally responded to myself when I thought I quoted.

Thanks everyone for the advice. It's helped me learn a lot. I hope to improve even more and be more careful. I wouldn't want to accidently ruin someone's reputable business because I word things not so well.

    12. Or

I don't really understand which side you're on? First you say not to commission artists who take payment upfront, and that the artist that scammed you did exactly that.
Now you say taking upfront is a good idea, and that the artists you commissioned didn't do that and wanted payment after finishing? :abambi:

Also I did not meet Aridede on a convention. I visited Poland with a friend to meet other BJD collectors/friends there, and Aridede was introduced to us by one of them.

It's sadly not uncommon, especially in other art circles. That's why with digital art artists often only send tiny WIP files or scaled down finished images before the payment was made, or they request full payment after the first sketch is done etc.
With dolls it's a bit less common, because...well, the artists has your doll hostage. Most people don't have the nerve then not to pay even though work has been finished, but it still happens.
I know one artists that had a commission for several years because the customer suddenly stopped talking to them even though they were alive and well. Customers can be crazy.

And you might not be offended, but as you stated yourself it's not because it's nothing to be offended about...you're just unable to stand up for yourself. That's also not uncommon in artists, but the ones that do stand up for themselves have pride and joy in their work. As such, they wish to be treated with respect and the understanding that even if it's "just" a faceup, that is still their art to them.
And as it is, faceup artists are often not treated well or respected anyway. They breath life into a naked canvas, make it into your character vs something many others already own etc., and yet they are paid very little (in comparison to many other doll artists) and often just seen as some kind of painting machine. So many people depend on them to enjoy this hobby and bring their ideas to life, I wish they would realize what they lose out on when nobody wants to paint their dolls anymore.

Regarding your first reply, shit happens.
No need to be overly wordy about it. Some people just tend to be like that when they're anxious or excited ;)

    13. All art, whether it's doll customizing or traditional painting, sculpting, etc. takes a lot of time and practice to develop skills in, regardless of someone's natural skill level. Most people get into doll customizing and faceups because they can't find dolls that match their ideas, and because it's fun.
You can see people working on faceups on youtube and some people stream on twitch. Twitch as a platform is made for streaming, so if you want to watch livestreams, that's going to be a better place to look than instagram, which is built more for sharing photos and shorter videos.

    14. That's sad not to respect a face up artist. Their work is so amazing why wouldn't people give them respect. Without face up artists so many dolls would go without beautiful face ups. I know I can never achieve the same level or skill as RDean, Aridede, Paulianne, Kana, etc. Well I don't have the skills yet I want to slowly learn, but I don't think I will ever be at their level or it might take decades to achieve something these artists can create. I have a growing list of face up artists I admire they create such beautiful works.

I'm waiting for most of my blank heads to come in. Sorry about the wordiness I don't think I can fix that. I always have a hard time putting my thoughts down so it alwyas ends up really long, rambling, and really confusing. It gets worse when I try to edit.

Thanks I will look into twitch. I think from what little I've seen I've really enjoyed watching the sculpting and the face up aspects of bjds. It's amazing how artists can create such beautiful dolls. I wanted to make dolls before, but I was told not to do it by everyone around me and I at the time I thought everyone knew better than me. I regret not doing what I wanted to pursue.

I can learn now slowly now that I'm on Doa. I wish I actually looked into what doa was several years ago. I thought for years it was a doll wiki site.

    15. No i never said not to commission artists who take payment upfront. I said to look for another artist if the one you want DOES NOT take payments upfront. The scammer didn't want payment until after they finished my doll. I only agreed to this scammer because I wasn't as experienced when looking for someone to commision. Now I know better and I will never commission someone to faceup my doll with out paying first. Less risk.

Aww i hope you get to go to a convention some day :D I went to my first one by myself back in 2015 I think (Pacific Northwest BJD convention) but I'm the same way as you, very shy and not as communicative. But I learend there are alot of people like that too and many of them are understanding and know where you're coming from :3nodding:

And if you have more questions, keep asking! Don't be afraid if you sound rude, how would you learn otherwise? You sound like a nice and genuine person though, I think it would be natural for you to recover from a bad impression:) I agree, livestream of a convention would be pretty fun. Someday I'd like to go to a big convention somewhere in Asia or Europe. I've seen some of those European doll conventions in photos and they have some really creative dolls o my! :whee:

    16. Thanks that's nice of you to say. I'm glad you learned about the commision thing. I actually never heard of anyone wanting payment afterwards. I know sellers ask for a percentage upfront then the rest afterwards, but I can understand making mistakes like you have I got scammed a lot on non-bjd related purchases when I started shopping. I actually never experienced much shopping in my life and had no one to ask for advice, so I made far worse decisions than you have. I'm really glad you got your doll head back.

It's just being scammed from bts related things and off topic dolls have made me really cautious and anxious whenever I make a purchase that isn't from a company. I always want feedback no matter the obvious signs that it is legitimate because I doubt myself too much. My problem really is I doubt myself and want others feedback even if I did the research and know it is legitimate because I don't trust my decisions very well. If I have others feedback I think I made the right decision. Does that make sense? Oh and my other problem lack of commication skills, and not being able to tell if I coming off as rude. My other problem is not knowing when someone is getting annoyed with me and that I should tread carefully and stop to think what might be annoying them. I guess not really being aware.

Lesson I learend from this post is:
How I word things can be offensive, but I can't tell. It's nice others tell me, so I can learn. That some posts can lead to hurt feelings unintentionally and can get me blocked from one of my favorite face up artists, but from that experience I learned to be more careful and found other face up artists that I'm adding to my growing list of artists I like and admire. I would like their work done on one of my doll faces one day, and I will work even harder to try not to get block by being unintentinally unknowingly offensive or some other things I might do that can make someone have ill/negative feelings towards me. Oh I need to fix my wordiness too Ara is right I am really wordy. I looked through my old posts and I word things way too long. that will be added on my list of improvements I need to make on myself.

    17. Totally - I too look for feedback/ reviews but it gets too exhausting to try and re-evaluate a decision over and over again without action. And its even worse if you spent all that time evaluating a decision that it forces you to miss out. I find if you create a contingency for any identifiable circumstance/event on a decision you're about to make, it can ease your mind a little about the choice you make :3nodding:

      • x 1

    18. That's true. I missed out sometimes because I took too long trying to decide because I didn't trust myself or trust thath I did enough research or waited for feedback. Thanks for the advice.

    19. Hello everyone, I'm late to the party here, haha :XD: My handle here is different since account on DoA was created loooong time ago when I only dreamed about dolls! And since then I really don't mind having this nickname here, since most of my activity is on Instagram anyway. Just to clear this!!

@Ara - thank you so much for all your imput here as a faceup artist, by the way your work is delightful and also everything you said here in this thread was really nicely worded! (Also, this might not be needed but we haven't meet in person since I haven't been to any doll meet/convention yet, I basically started around pandemic time but I'm very curious who did you meet then, hehe :XD:) Anyway, thank you for educating on that topic here, I feel like you understand me as another artist.

First of all thank you so so much everyone who complimented my work! This made my day! Especially @Forever We Are Young , the amount of kindness you gave me by complimenting my faceups is out of Eath, thank you <3 As I said to you in other comments, I'm not offended at all but it's good to learn that we all still should be careful with words anyway. That's lesson learned for me too : D About the blocking - or not - as I said I might've block you by accident, taking your account as spam account or just simply Instagram acted and I will ask for your handle privately to make sure of that. As @Ara said, most faceup artists won't feel comfortable with having their faceups "finished" by other person and I'm sadly one of them - but if you're intrested in something less complicated like you can see in my portfolio, don't hesitate to ask. It's just really hard to say if the other artist will keep my own work in good shape and untouched or for example paint over and I won't really feel connected anymore with the result, etc... If you consider Pauli, she's also an amazing artist, she will be most likely able do much more designs than me!

Another thing is, if you see many posts by some artist, positive comments etc - just see they're active, I think they're good, even if they take money upfront! Just be careful, in the end asking here also isn't a bad idea :3nodding: So you did good! I'm glad you get to know some things that are worth to remember from other doll people here : D

I'm so sorry for all of people scammed, I can't even imagine the amount of stress when waiting for the doll to be back T.T

    20. Wait wait wait, someone back then told me you were the gal that lead us through Wroclaw back when we visited AyuAna in 2019???:XD:
Or am I mixing up my Poles here right now? Oh nooo, how shameful...whoops. Disregard what I said :XD:

But I'm glad to hear the rest of my post was helpful :3nodding:

    21. Thanks @mx_95, I sent my handle privately. :) I'm glad I learned all this early on instead later on. Sorry for the late reply though I meant to reply around 7 to 8 am, but was sick :barf for most of the day. I started collecting around the pandemic too. Although, I was a long time admirer of bjds and didn't really think I would actually get into this hobby. I am amazed at your skill when you began during the pandemic. I think if I ever tried to do a face up it would be really clumsy and not that great even if I had a few years to learn. I think perhaps in a decade or two I might get somewhat okay at it. I used to own non-bjd off topic dolls. I'm really clumsy once I opened a non-bjd off topic doll and the moment I got her out of her box I somehow completely destroyed her outfit and broke her hand off.

I was trying trying to pose the doll and broke her hand off. Then I dropped her. After that I somehow ripped parts of her clothes and ended up destroying her wig by stupidly undoing her factory wig. Then I thought I could fix what I did and brushed her hair aggressively until her hair fell out. At the time, I thought I was gently brushing her hair, but when I think back to it I was being really aggressive with my brushing like how I brush my own hair because I have a hard time controlling my movements. I tried braiding her hair and completely ruined her. That doll after a week was a mess. I tried fixing her and made a mess of her. The doll was a fragile doll and I was warned it was fragile, yet I still ended up being really clumsy with my doll when I tried being as careful as I could be. I can't seem to control my clumsy movements very well.

Does anyone have a horror story about their doll they accidentally destroyed?

    22. O wow Aridede :XD: I'm totally fan-girling, I love looking at all of your faceups- its a real feast for the eyes:whee: And yay @Forever We Are Young looks like it was just a small misunderstanding - it all worked out at the end:cheer

    23. I'm glad it was a misunderstanding of me panicking and making the assumption I was blocked, but I sadly don't have extra heads at the moment to request for commission. All the heads I'm waiting for won't be here for a long time. I do have one head I have to pick up at the post office. Maybe I can have that one commissioned I'm not sure though, since I planned for that one to be a heavily fantasty themed doll.

    25. wow so many gorgeous dolls, I been staring at them for awhile on her IG!!!:D And you got 4 more for her!!!:aeyepop: Did you have her decide the faceup or did you provide a description of what you wanted? I really love the eyemakeup of your custom house and the black lips on your Luts and Volks boys. Please share when you get your other dolls done up :whee:

I sent my doll to Aridede a few weeks ago, shipping been slow going (can't be helped ofc) but I'm super excited how she'll paint my Supia Esther:chibi Really want to get another doll just so I can have another faceup by her XD

    26. Aw shucks I’m honored you like my dolls so much.

I’m usually pretty vague. Like my F-57 and Uranus I told her colors, facial marking ideas, and the mood I wanted for the dolls. My Diez though I just sent her pictures of my OC that I draw in a very gothic style and just let her loose.

I’ve lucked out that Aridede has a style I just really like so I feel like I don’t need to be too specific.

She’s got such a good style, somewhere between make-up and traditional art that I adore. Some of the line art is so detailed I can’t even see it in person (my vision is terrible).

I look forward to seeing what she’ll do with your Esther!
