Granado Tiny Doll Discussion

Yes. I must decide on a head also. I need to check with my boys also!

 

The Ascent Shadow I'm waiting on, is probably the wrong resin color for the character I'm trying to re-shell. Comparing the head sculpts available with the 32Evolve package, Lucent is probably a better face for my character as well... Ack! I was going to stop buying tiny dolls!

 

Does anyone else find the lack of torso rotation to be just a little annoying? Crocus does these gorgeous bodies, but they can't twist at all...except the Vigor. And none of the arms rotate out at the elbows. Has anyone found a mod to address either or these?

 

I don't own any Granado (yet), but the lack of a 3-piece toros option keeps me from considering them more seriously. I know not everyone likes three-piece torsos but coming from a 1:6 action figure world, I enjoy 3-piece torsos a lot more, because they lend themselves to more natural poses. Even if the engineering is not all that great, a third part does allow for a wider range of posing -- and I'm not even that interested in extreme action poses, I just find 3-piece torsos more aesthetically pleasing to look at. DX They do help in adding extra range of motion however, so I'm always hoping they'll add that as an option.

I keep getting tempted by their gorgeous faces and sculpting all the time, but the lack of an optional 3-piece torso and the narrower necks, keeps me from pulling the trigger whenever they release a new head sculpt. Which is good for my wallet, but kind of sad I don't get to bring any of their beautiful faces home (I kind of wish they sold their heads separately too, but I don't think they often do so for the tiny guys).

 

Oh they do quite often sell the heads by themselves! Just usually only with the first release... I have a couple of Shadow heads floating around because I didn't want to miss out on his lovely face but couldn't buy the whole doll at the time.

 

I was surprised that they pose as well as they do, but I agree with you. I wish they were three piece as well. Crocus definitely emphasizes the aesthetic over the mobility, but gorgeous they are and since I don't give a darn about resale (I don't buy if I can't afford to spend) I'm going to try modding my mini zen body (because frankly, I don't like it that much, mostly because compared to the others it's a lousy poser) and if that's successful, I'm moving onto the Adagio...because the bodies are gorgeous. Did I mention, the bodies are gorgeous?

Curiously, as beautiful as the heads are, I ended up getting to non-Granado heads for my big guys, simply because none of the Granado heads were right for them. So I now have two Noah heads (because the basic proportions are such I figured I could mod them into my boys) languishing about,. Sigh.

 

I just received my 31 Ascent (Noah head) but I'm moving in 2 weeks so I'm struggling between opening him now and kill the anticipation or wait until I settle and I'm able to give him some time but everyone rejoice, the ascents are shipping! /!\ Noteable fact /!\ : I got the shipping notice email only AFTER he arrived... and this is the second time this happens with my granado orders >.>

 

Idoru, yes, I have seen them selling heads separately but not often. Or maybe I don't check on their website often enough. DX Although, with current shipping restrictions, I would probably not be able to afford floating heads from them anyway, -- because I have a million OT pre-orders and shipping is really digging deep holes into my wallet (particularly from Japan!).


Vindalootoo, ooh! I hope you post your progress if you do decide to mod more articulation on your tiny bodies. I don't mind modifying faces to death, but BJD bodies, more so mine that are as ancient as I am, I am a bit terrified to try. I hope you do post your mods, if you decide to try! (:

@Enzyme As soon as I get the current book finished, (and taxes done) I'm going to have a marathon of modding and sewing. I'll definitely put the progress (or lack thereof) on a workshop thread.

Just got a shipping notice for my Ascent Shadow! As @Vindalootoo mentioned, the tracking site is in Chinese making it not very helpful.

I would recommend opening your order sooner rather that later just in case there is any problem @lendelia . My first Granado tiny came with cracks in one hand, and they sent me a replacement free of charge once I sent photos.

 

I second @SteamWitch. Very slow shipping out of China. I JUST received a gift I ordered for my spousal unit in November that was shipped two days after I ordered it. The tracking just showed shipped, with nothing more. Likely it came by sea, so it was probably caught in the mess in the CA harbors, but still, everything is still covid-crazy.

@lendelia I second @Leo Pheonix: best to check condition right away. Then you can wrap him back up and have a whole new opening and really get to know him when you get to your new digs.

To all those who have received the Ascent body...any thoughts on how it compares to the other bodies?

Letta, I just checked the tracking and it took exactly 4 days to arrive which kinda blows my mind. For reference I live in New Zealand.

I also took everyone's advice and opened him to check that everything was ok (everything was indeed OK), so I took comparison pictures with my Lucifer (vigor body) and my Jane.


I don't want to flood this thread with all the pics I took but you can check them out here Small Scale Marvels

Personally I think the Ascent body has really big improvements. Noah stands so much better than Lucifer; The hip joints are circular and his ankles are nicely round so he's not suffering from duck feet posture and it makes him way more stable. Funnily enough his feet are smaller than both Lucifer's and Jane's, which is fine by me. I used one of the extra feet S hook with the connector in the neck and it seems to work really well. The connector also fits perfectly in the wrist sockets which makes it a nice clothes-changing pad. Noah's head is slightly smaller than Lucifer's (I forgot to try swaping them, sorry! But i put Noah's cap on Lucifer for an idea of the size difference) and his eyes are also smaller (I like a challenge). The box has to be my favourite BJD box yet, it's really solid and sleek, has magnets for opening/closing and is just sooooo beautiful! There is an extra 'eggplant' as well in the weirdest little packaging I've ever seen, it made me laugh out loud .

I'm so excited to get my 15cm Lucent, it's clear Crocus is having a blast with these tinies and my wallet is crying with each new release

 

Wow...thanks for the link. The one of him sitting next to Vigor is a bit of a shock. He must be all legs. I love the way Crocus gives us so many body types.

Ascent body is adorable. I'm waiting for it, too, with Shadow head + Noah on adagio. The eyes seem to be an issue though. I gave up figuring up what size and proportion will be ideal for the guys, so will get them and decide

 

Oh man, thank you sooo much for the pics @lendelia ! (And your JANE! Please feel free to spam her, too.) That's great to know about the feet... That makes that body really tempting, even though I like the overall look of it less than the Adagio. The feet (and how hard it is to get them into shoes) are probably my least favorite feature of the Vigor body... (Adagio is a bit easier, at least.)

The current box is my favorite! It's so easy to open and I love the little storage slots for the weird extra parts. In the first boxes with all the extra space, I basically ended up cutting a hole in the foam to store things in... So it's nice that this time Granado has just done it for us, and that I can get the box opened and closed with no hassle!

 

@lendelia, Thank you for your review! I may order the 32evolve package. I was trying to decide on the head. The only head I don't have is Lucifer but for some reason I thought he was smaller than Noah! I think a bigger head is better for that body, so it will be Lucifer!

 

@Vindalootoo Completely! If I had the spare cash right now I would have ordered a 32evolve too X'D Comparing the differences is fascinating!

@Idoru Thank you so much! Jane is such a gorgeous sculpt ;v;. There are aspects of Vigor that I prefer over Ascent as well, ex. the shoulders sockets have that nice smooth connection with the collarbone whereas Ascent's is a bit awkward; also Vigor is a bit meatier and omg I think I will steal your foam cutting trick for my older boxes; if i could purchase the new boxes on their own for lucifer and jane I would do it in a heartbeat!

@nancy_schroeder_ca It's true! Somehow Lucifer's head looks like it would be smaller huh!? But I think you're onto something with pairing it with 32evolve! If you decide on it I hope I get to see him on day

 

It's really dangerous to find an artist whose aesthetic you're in tune with who keeps churning out these just within pocket book range bodies!!!!

 

Just gave in to temptation and ordered Lucent on the 32Evolve body. So I now have two Granado orders I'm waiting on.

 

I just asked them which was the largest of the little guy heads. That's a pretty bulky body. I figure I can mod the head to whoever he ends up being, but it's hard to actually change the size. [edit] they say Lucifer or Noah is "suitable" for the new body

 

Mine are all totally in limbo until all bodies are in and I decide who looks good with whom. Then dying is going to be in order, because they're all too pale, except for Stephen, and I don't know which body he's going to commandeer. Everyone else will have to sort out what's left.

Why are their heads so small? Now I'm worried Lucent will look pin-headed with the rest of my mature tiny gang.

 

Well I got one. I ordered the day they put out the event notice. I wasn't planning on it, but oops. I won't know what I'm doing with him until here's here lol

 

My Noah Ascent has arrived! Gotta scoot, but here's a quick pic of all the little people side by side. Ascent is by far the best poser...I think. I'll test better later. The Zen is SOOOOO going to get modded. Look at the come hither sitting position! Bad boy!

Adagio's knees need help as well. and all the older bodies are going to get deeper cuts into their upper back leg so they stand straight! More later.

@Letta I blame @SteamWitch! She got me looking at these, and the variety available made it possible to think about shelling the whole crew. I'd NEVER do it in the big guys, but these minis are just irresistable. But, oh, do I have a lot of work to do. Stephen and Wesley can get their faceups at last, Stephen was waiting on the body and Wesley on the Noah head. And the modding is beginning. (Gulp)

I really shouldn't be so mean, because I know a lot of people love the zen body...it was why I took the chance and got one. And I will say, that joint is tight and smooth. In part, I suppose my animosity toward it is because I planned the body for a lad who is in many ways dreadfully shy, and it just wouldn't work! I will say, post mods, he'll be able to do both.

Speaking of which...I've started a very haphazard journal of my modding. It's all very rough at the moment, but I'm already in a totally different head space with regard to the body.

I have been looking at Granado tiny for awhile but never fall in love with any of them until Ascent came out and bought 2 of them. The new 32evolve is not my favorite bec. i don't like the body to be too beefy. My next boy I want is another ascent body.

 

@chinadoll, Well, you certainly waited for what I think is the best, IMO! For me, that variety lets each one be just a bit different in look and body language and since all my boys are very different, it lets the look match the personality. Now I just have to get them all to pose comparably, if not as well.

 

I am thinking Granado might continue to make variety of diff bodies in this size but all i want is more diff. head mold. My favorite is Noah at the moment.

 

Oh these are such great photos @Vindalootoo thank you! It's great to see them all compared like that. Crocus has really gone bonkers with this size, and I love him for it! To think, my doll collection used to be SMALL...

I love that each one has a fairly different aesthetic as well as engineering, so you can have a lanky boy or a beefy boy as needed. (If he makes like a smooth-thick wrestler body, I would absolutely die. That's my dream beefy boy...)

I'm just praying he doesn't make good on his threat of an eyehole head Bonnie before summer.

 

Thankfully, I think I've got all my boys covered. The only thing that would tempt me, and I'd have to REALLY think about it, would be a 70-74cm Ascent, because that would mean I didn't have to mod my Adagio. I'm going to hold off on that mod, just in case.

I got a shadow for my girl, Anevai, and I love it.

 

A bit of news on the foot/shoe issue, oft mentioned herein....As I was modding my Zen body's hip, I decided to attack his feet as well. They don't point worth a darn, and that heel is just...well, uuuuuugly, IMO. So...I bit the bullet and turned my dremel on those pointy heels...not to mention taking a gouge out of the back to let him point his toe.

I'm still very quite new to DOA so I hope I'm doing this right (please guide me if I'm doing this wrong) but does anyone know of any good sites to find clothes for Granado's 32 Evolve body? I have been looking on Etsy but all I could find is 1/6 YOSD size clothes... (which I'm sure are too big) Any suggestions?
(Once again if I'm doing. this wrong please tell me and direct me to the right place to post this)!

@WitheredPond None of us quite know what will fit the new body, but you are looking more in the realm of action figure clothes than 1/6 on BJD-specific sites! Most of those stores will honestly just not have anything.

If the new body is anything like the old, I've had great luck with Fashion Royalty Homme clothes for pants, and most Ken tops have fit just fine. This boy is quite a bit beefier, though, so you might want to look at action figure tops that look like they fit that type of physique. I don't think anything on the PetWorks site will fit, because Eight and Nine are both shorter and more slender! They are delicate fashion waifs, and this new body is definitely not that.

I've gotten a good amount of clothes from Aliexpress/Taobao. You're looking for something to the tune of "1/6 soldier doll clothes". I can snag some shop recommendations in the future if you need!

I have to admit, you made me curious, and I was a bit surprised with the result. I put my Ascent, who is notably slighter than Evolve, in some of Wiishu's (LTF Shiwoo) clothes that I made so I could give you a direct comparison. the pants would actually work as shorts. The fit in the groin and waist is quite comparable, tho most YOSD duds aren't as fitted. The sweater was one that I made specifically bulkier and is designed to go over Wiishu's big head (don't tell him I said that.) The fit in the shoulders is quite nice, and the long-on-wiishu arms worked pretty well. It's actually possible you might find something that would work for some looks in the YoSD stuff. I'm actually quite tickled with how the pants fit. Means I can use the same pattern but just make the legs longer. Yippee!

Oh, and Stephen thanks you for asking. He's no longer sitting about in the altogether, for which he is eternally grateful!

I don't get the difference between VINDOLL and "Normal" .

 

VINDOLLs are vinyl and off topic for DOA. Normal are normal resin BJD dolls.
