I received a notice from Granado that they have sent the wrong head for my Bayou's faceup. Instead of the closed-eye one that I wanted from the promo picture, they sent the open-eye face to the makeup artist. They asked if I want the open-eye version instead. But I found that there seemed to be different feeling from the closed-eye promo photo, the open-eye official photo, and the head they reserved for me. I am not sure about whether it was because of the photo touch-up or the photo angles/lighting, or if there really are differences? Could anyone please see and let me know? Because at this moment, I wanted to insist for them to make the closed-eye head's faceup for me. This probably would take another year or so. On the other hand, I am not sure the result for a closed-eye head's faceup would actually be as good as the promo picture's....
I don't own any Granado sculpts (yet), but just by looking at the photos you shared, the main difference between all heads is the irises and overall eye size. They painted the eyes on the sculpted eyed head a lot smaller, with irises that are more human-proportioned, vs the eyes the opened eyed head sculpt has. Which appear to be a though larger than the actual eye opening on the sculpted eyed head. The eyes in the opened eyed head also have very large average-doll-eyed-sized iris. Perhaps getting eyes with smaller irises will help get a similar feeling to the sculpted eyes head sculpt, but even then, the eyes appear to be just larger than the sculpted eyed head sculpt. Hope that helps. (:
I have both heads. I'll try to compare them with your pictures later today. What color skin did you get? The painting actually looks quite similar.
Yeah, I agree--the eyes that are painted on the sealed-eye version are a bit smaller. But like Enzyme said, probably using eyes with a smaller iris will get you a lot closer to that feeling. The faceup itself, eyes aside, actually looks very, very similar to me--as similar as one can get when trying to hand-paint something, honestly! So it's definitely I think the eye size. I personally prefer inset eyes, but if you love the sealed eye version more and are willing to wait, then that's probably what you should do!
Does anyone happen to know what size eyes work best with these dolls? I know granado has 6.5mm eyes they sell, but I found a pair for 6mm I really liked off Etsy..but I don't know if it would be a tad too small?
I have 6mm eyes in all of mine! Specifically 6/2.5 or 6/2--the small iris makes a huge difference in how well they fit.
Thank you! And also for indicating the iris size too--the ones I want are 6/2! If you don't mind, would you also be able to share some pictures of how the 6mm eyes look in your dolls?
I don't mind at all! Here's all 4 of my Granado dolls with the eyes they currently have in. Spoiler: Pics under the cut! These are the Granado eyes in my Bonnie, which I'm mostly including here for comparison. Des has 6/2 Heart of a Fairy eyes These are 6mm but may not be small iris... I actually don't remember, the person who made these doesn't make eyes anymore. I could check the iris size though. And these are 6mm eyes from Dreamingtree, with the small iris size. Not sure of exact iris sizes on these either, but I think somewhere in the realm of 2-2.5mm. Again I'd have to get out the calipers to check, but I could. Let me know if you want exact numbers for those last 2. I will note that both of those boys have relatively larger heads (by like, a very small proportion, but still) than any dolls to come out after them.
Yes, please do help compare! I thought there was only 2 skin colours? I asked for the same skin colour as their promo picture. Then when they sent me the photo I asked again about it as it looked like a different colour. They said it was the same colour, just under different lighting conditions.
Hi all!! So glad I found this thread! I recently got my tan Abel on a 31Vigor body and, as many people also stated, I'm SO DESPERATE for clothing and shoes!! I managed to find some cute sneakers on Etsy but I really wanted to go for more of a formal look. I'll keep looking through the thread for answers, but just wanted to ask in case anyone has any suggestions top of mind. SO happy mature minis are gaining some traction!!!
First of all: congratulations! Second of all, with the Vigor body you're going to be in mildly dire straits, I regret to say. At least on the shoe front—unless the foot shape has been updated for the Vigor bodies, they have a lot of volume at the back of the heel that can make buying shoes a bit challenging. My usual first go-to is Black Ops Toys lately, but make sure what you're looking at says "foot type". Uniforms For clothing, I've had pretty good luck with things that are stated to fit FR Homme--Clear Lan is good for this. Generally it's easier to work with things that are oversized or stretchy, since the measurements aren't too terribly off most of the time. I've made a few things myself, as well. The kicker with pants is, again, those dang heels. These are the two I can think of off the top of my head, but there's definitely more in this thread! Check the Mature Tiny discussion thread, too, I think some things don't necessarily get x-posted between them.
I just got my first Granado doll, does anyone know where in his box his eyes might be hiding? I’m not finding them anywhere….do they come with eyes? also I’m cracking up, I never realized the hand holding “modesty” part wasn’t his own hand doing the holding!
None of the Granado tines I've bought came with eyes. Mine wear 6mms. The "handy" part is a spare floating modesty hand, which is pretty odd.
I wish I'd had the money to get Ninth's faceup done by them. Oh well. Ninth arrived, haven't named him yet. My three tiny boys. Tiny Granado Ninth Box opening by SteamWitch, on Flickr
Making 3mm eyes is hard. I'm still working on my method. Luke and Rabbit eyes by SteamWitch, on Flickr
Whoa! Those look so good, though! I can't imagine making proper eyes that size... You are a brave soul.
Hall got some of the jointed hands from Granado. They are wonderful. Hall and his new hands by SteamWitch, on Flickr
I'm just in awe of those tiny jointed fingers. It almost doesn't seem possible! And yet, here we are!
Indeed those are insane! Extremely tempting, but holey-crap are those way too expensive for me. Not when I hoard so much other stuff, and I just keep thinking I could have paid S/H with the cost of the hands for one and a half of my "monthly" toy hauls. Lol! DX Those tiny, jointed hands are still beyond impressive, and obviously pricey for that reason -- they look so nice as well, I usually don't like jointed hands aesthetically, but those look beautiful from that photo! I only wish I didn't hoard other stuff, but then again, I can just happily admire what others share from a distance! Thanks so much for sharing, SteamWitch! (:
Oh those look so good @SteamWitch! I keep thinking I want to get those for myself... Well worth the cost, but I can't seem to commit to it. (Yet!)
Thanks, they are really pretty cool. A bit of a challenge for my shaky fingers but once they are in place they stay there for photos which is the best part. They go well on the Zen body but they wouldn't look right on the more muscular bodies.
I’m new to Granado but I have a few 1/6 ladies on the way and Ive been having so much fun planning for them I started looking here to see if they might need some friends Gabriel and the adagio2 body are definitely extremely tempting.. I’m thinking he would be inspired by Geralt from the Witcher. I know the new body probably hasn’t made it out to owners yet, but I’m curious what everyone’s thoughts are between adagio2 and 32 evolve?
Has anyone had any luck finding clothes for the girls at this scale? I have a Bonnie on the Muse body and a Bayou (soon to be Jade via head transplant) on the Embody and I’m not having a lot of luck finding things. I tried dresses for Phicen and shorts sets for Ob27 girls from Taobao and they were both big in some places and awkwardly proportioned in others. The Embody in particular is bustier than the Muse with a tiny waist so things slide around on her that are fine on the Muse body. So far the only things that sort of fit are Barbie clothes, but they’re not the best quality. I’ve had much better luck finding Ob27 sized things for the boys… but they’re wearing oversized hoodies and hanfu so there’s more margin for error. (Sorry no pics; my whole crew has sealed eyes now because I like the look of it better so their heads are off topic.) @ArouraAnn Okay, A) tiny Geralt would be SO COOL and B) I don’t have either of those bodies but I’ve been eying the Adagio 2 to replace my boys’ bodies because it’s less muscley and I don’t love how the Zen body lacks a mobility joint. I’ve heard good things from friends about Adagio 1 so I assume it’s got a similarly fabulous range of motion. (I was fine with the Zen body until the ladies arrived and could do so much more, haha!) It probably just depends on which one you like more aesthetically.
So they're a bit hard to fit... The Muse body (the only one I have) is kind of like a stretched-out Momoko doll with somewhat bigger hips... I have my girl in 1/6 action figure woman clothes, which do fit, but it's not a close-fitting outfit and the only part of it that IS doesn't work. Hopefully someone else has better pointers, but I've been pondering this exact question myself and not found anything.
Well, I’m glad I’m not alone in the struggle then! I was looking at Momoko patterns and wondering if they would fit, so that’s good intel, thank you! I asked Granado for suggestions too, but they were like “Try Ob27 clothes, good luck!” I may have to suck it up and buy some Barbie clothing patterns to try. If I find something that works brilliantly I’ll share!
You can find a lot of nice clothes on xianyu! It's a lot of hanfu though, lol. I made an order through Christina from clover singing for some clothes and wigs for my granado dolls. She does charge a high fee, but I think with some help you can probably figure it out!
Speaking of Granado's ladies... Rime is released! I'm super in love with her, I think I might have to get her!! Those long elf ears, those lips! Is anyone else planning on getting this beautiful fairy queen?
I'm tempted by Rime too! And am thinking about whether or not I want to order her accessories as well. I'm also thinking of ordering the open eyes version, but it doesn't look like there is an option to buy her with eyes? Does anyone know what size eyes work best? It says on Granado's site that she fits 6.5 mm eyes but from a brief search, I've only been able to find either 6 or 7 mm eyes. Which would work best: 6 or 7 mm?
Yeah, like Nancy said--Granado does sell 6.5mm eyes! If not getting eyes from Granado, I'd round down to 6mm, personally, because 7mm is a strange size to find (although not impossible). I have Granado eyes in my Bonnie and they're beautiful. I'm trying to decide what body I like myself... and what color. I think she'd made a good sister for one of my other dolls, which means getting her in NS or WS, but if I weren't... Rosy tan speaks to me... Or one of the two darkest colors, too...
I’m letting my wallet recover but Rime is gorgeous! I hope they do some kind of holiday sale where she will be available again but I’m the mean time I will look forward to everyone’s pictures an elf boy is genius and hadn’t crossed my mind either
Hey friends, I'm on this struggle bus super hard. Can someone help me find some mature male wigs and eyes for my 32 Evolve Abel? He's so tiny that I'm worried whatever I buy won't fit him. ILU, thank you!
The 6.5mm Lab Eyes from Granado work well. I just ordered some 6mm with 2mm iris on esty. I will report on them when I get them. I do gt wigs from Granado when ever they offer them!
I'm not great with wigs (I just make my own) but there's lots of places to get 6mm eyes! Granado's are great, of course, but there's a few others... Heart of a Fairy, Eyes in the Box, Secret Art Studio... There's others I'm not remembering, too, but I've had great luck with 6/2 or 6/2.5 eyes.
So I have no idea how to make a wig, but the eye suggestions are great. The only wigs being offered by Granado are gigantic. Would a typical 1/6 wig work for these guys, because I feel like those are a little too big (but I could be crazy).
Typical 1/6 wigs are about 6-7 inches. I measured Abel's head at 3.5 inches today. Thanks for the eye sources! Some of the ones I've used are now gone.
Typical 1/6 wigs absolutely won't work, "1/6" in BJDs doesn't actually mean 1/6 in scale--it usually means YoSD, so more of a 1/3 scale small child. However! There's lots of tutorials on how to make hard cap wigs, both here and on Youtube! Here's a few I really like as far as a 101 goes: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLG3a8uEK4adNzoVbx78bO7nrqtgaDiCHs Maria Lazar (Playlist) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlNQgfXniaheeAi_u4msJXp2WGc3JgVsA Mozekyto's videos (playlist) /threads/crafting-your-own-custom-angora-wig-a-tutorial.571784/ This is for angora specifically but you can use any fiber and it's basically the same /threads/hard-cap-wigs-for-small-heads.598886/ These are all for hard cap wigs, of course, but I really recommend those at this scale over sewn wigs. Much easier to get the fit you want. If you're going to buy a wig, you want a size 3/4 usually. Those are few and far between, in my experience, but Parabox, Mudoll and Doll-Wig.com all sell them as a starter.
Happy to hear it! And please if you run into any issues--drop me a line! I'm not an expert, but I've gotten into it so I've got some experience under my belt, at least. ♥ Extremely happy to help.
Does anyone know what the iris size of the 6.5mm lab eyes from granado are? I think I am leaning to getting 6mm/2mm size eyes for my boys, I think the granado eyes have a slightly larger iris size but does anyone happen to know haha?
The Granado iris size has changed a bit over the years. Here are several. The eyes on the left are some older Granado 6.5 eyes. The middle pair are recent 6.5. The pair on the right are custom 6mm eyes with a 2mm iris from makingdolldolls.com. I am going to order some 6/2.5mm now! Granado 6.5 older, Granado 6.5 new, makingartdolls 6/2mm custom
Thanks! This is super helpful, the heads are pretty small so I'm thinking 2mm irises are the best fit! There's an artist I'm looking to commission from that I bought from before. Just waiting for them to open at the end of this month, haha!
It’s not apparent on the English site from what I can tell (trying to get to anything through those menus foils me continually), but if you go to Granado’s Taobao they have regular and small iris eyes up for purchase in the 6.5mm size. My first Granado tinies were Ninth and V11 at the same time—Ninth had the regular iris eyes, and they fit him because his eyes are overall bigger, and V11 had the small iris eyes. Both work in the more narrow eye shape, it just makes them look a little more cartoonish/immature.
Does anyone know if 1/6 bjd shoes will fit for Granado Tinies? Or are they typically too big? There's a pair on etsy I really like, but I didn't want to get them in case they are too big!
If they are specifically being sold as 1/6 BJD shoes, they will be made to fit the YoSD/non-mature tiny type of doll and therefore will not really fit. You may be able to put them on the doll, but they will be far too wide and clunky. The Granado tinies are more along the lines of action figures when it comes to fitting.
You literally just reminded me I have to buy shoes for my doll and now I'm regretting my decision because I guess I gotta figure out leatherwork now???? Ahaha.
Look for Obitsu 27 or fashion doll shoes. The boys are pretty easy to find things for because they’re similar proportions to a lot of other 12 inch action figures and fashion dolls.
Depending on the body, shoes can be a challenge. I think it's something that's been addressed for the Adagio boys onward, though. (Someone with a body released after Adagio can probably tell you for sure...) I have 2 of the Vigor bodies and 1 Adagio, and the Vigor bodies are nightmarish to buy shoes for because of the shape of the heel. It sticks out a lot in the back... But yeah I think for the newer boys they're much easier to shoe and fit most standard 1/6 shoes.
