General Mecha Angel discussion thread!

Jul 20, 2011

    1. Aw, thank you. She'll have black hair in the end, but I just had to try out this wig for fun. Hehe. I wanted this wig for ages, and now it's doing a bit of hopping around doll to doll to see where it will finally settle. My Soom Amber has pretty strong dibs on it though, hehe.

    2. EEEEEEEEEEEEEE! <3

I have the stupidest grin every time I see them. ^_________^
Interesting what a difference a faceup makes! Hehe.

    3. So I know this thread has gone a bit stagnant but I'm wondering if there is someone here who can make a tape form of a mecha angel female body for me. I would of course be willing to pay for your time materials, postage etc or I could make a custom outfit in trade. I'm just really sick of working solely from measurements.

    4. I tried to find any information - without success. Maybe someone can help me.
What is the difference between Mecha Angel female type body & Mecha Angel 2nd female type body (released in 2011 on FFD sale: Deneb, Saiph, Vega & Betel)?

    5. Hm...could it be the elbows?

I know Soom updated the Super Gem elbows at one point before they completely re-did that body.

    6. I'm so happy! :sumomo:

    7. I'm so glad I found this thread! Lots of useful things here (I have a MA Sabik).

    8. @Nissa
Welcome! I'd love to see your Sabik. :)

    9. Yeah, welcome! :3 I’m guilty of not posting here, but I do watch the thread as I have a Sabik as well! He’s my favorite MA, but I’m probably biased. ;)

    10. Oh, Wow!
There is a common theme for MA! So cool! So cool! O_O
And we are to you too!

      Hiiiiiii!

      My MA Saiph (Ruby)^^

    11. @Bzika, your Saiph is gorgeous! I love the way you have her styled. :)

    12. *NatTheCat*
      Thank you very much!
I will try not to lower the set bar of her style! And I promise to show more often here! (:
      I’m still running around!
Ruby has a friend MA Deneb.
But, Deneb is not my doll! (:

    13. Wow! Love this outdoor shot of them! Deneb is gorgeous and another that you don't see very often. What a treat to be able to meet up with her too :) I think I have shared most of my photos of Saiph here before and must take some new ones!

Congrats on the high heeled feet @Lady Ravenswood ! They are so nicely sculpted and very useful when shoes are so hard to come by.

    14. Yay!!! So happy to see so many lovely MA ladies! :aheartbea :D :aheartbea

      @Bzika
Your Saiph is lovely and so is her friend! :3nodding:
The sunglasses look great on her.

      @LyanneNZ
Thank you so much! I was SO EXCITED when I found them. I'm trying to decide what color to paint the shoes. I think one will be a classy set in navy blue with gold heels...but not sure on the other one yet. Hm...

    15. LyanneNZ,
      Thank You!
      ABOUT! One plan has matured in my account with Deneb and my girlfriend! And we are already preparing for it! ((;

      Lady Ravenswood,
      Ahahaha!
Sunglasses are not hers! Another borrowed my dolls!

And also, soon we will please you with new things! I hope I have time to finish everything today!:)

    18. Nissa, Thank You!
She was too beautiful inspiration and can not just stand on the shelf! :D

    19. Oh so beautiful...! Love her new outfit @Bzika . Your photos of your Saiph will hopefully bring out some other Saiph owners who will share some new pictures.

As for heeled shoes...mine are still unpainted and I have some in Super Gem size too the same. If I had better skills at editing photos it might be an idea to leave them "nude" and just add colour to match her outfits :) (Err...well if she had any outfits...)

    20. I hope to be able to show pictures of my Sabik soon. I'm so happy he's here, I think he was one of the very first BJD I fell in love with. (When I returned to the hobby, I spent a long time browsing around trying to remember/locate the original dolls I fell in love with.) Sabik falls in that timeframe, so it was a dream to bring him home.

Once he's ready, he'll probably be a total shutterbug. :D

If you've tried out SSDF-sized clothing for Mecha Angel boys (and girls, I suppose), how did it work out? The measurements look very close, save for the length of trousers and the fact that if a shirt is 'perfectly fitted' for an SSDF, it'll probably run a bit short on a Mecha Angel.

I'm thinking of ordering some stuff over the next few months. I'd love to send Sabik on his way for a faceup by the holidays.

    21. @Bzika
Ooh, I like this photo a lot. It's very dreamy. :chocoheart

      @LyanneNZ
That would be a great idea! Hehe, I'm not that talented with photo editing either, so paint it is!

      @Nissa
Ah, I only have MA women so no help here. :sweat

    22. Oh I love the MA women as well! I'm hoping to one day find a Saiph of my own. :)

Quick question for the thread in general: what size eyes are your MA boys wearing? (14mm seems to be the standard - is that normal or small iris?)

Also, if anyone here has 5th Motif hands (or Dollshe 70cm boy hands), I'm curious whether or not those fit MA boys. If so, I may try and purchase them through BJDivas and have them blushed to match my Sabik's resin at some future time.

I love me some hands for photography~

    23. @Nissa
I know that Universedoll hands look great on the MA male body. I knew someone who used them with a Sabik. Those are very similar in scale to the 5th Motif hands (I have both 5th Motif hands and Universedoll hands).
So I bet 5th Motif hands would look really good. :3nodding:
      is pretty close to old
      [IMG]
too, so it shouldn't be hard to blush them at all.

Ah yes, and Saiph is so gorgeous. One of my all time favorite sculpts ever. <3
I hope you can get your Saiph. :)

    25. LyanneNZ, Lady Ravenswood,
      Thank you very much!
It's still unusual for me ... to see her so warm and relaxed! She is she, as is now clear, is able to please in any way that she tried on!
Although, I do not plan to retreat from the original style chosen for her!

      Nissa,
I like such philosophical photos very much!
When a character is immersed in his own small, but very serious thoughts!
I also like photos of dolls from the back! They come to life on such frames much more strongly for me!

Can I bring Ruby here again ???

    26. @Nissa I'm using the 5th Motive hands with my MA boy. The colour match is not perfect as you can see but I like the proportions. With my other boys the hands are looking a bit too big.

    27. Saiyaku, Saiph boy! WoW! He is very cool!!! OMG! :D

      And Ruby again!
      But in new outfit!

Now she’s the name I’ve always imagined!

    28. She is a versatile fashion model from her demure neutrals and lace to her brightly coloured streetwear! She looks so cool...love the outfit!

Love the grey coloured wig on your Saiph boy too!

    29. LyanneNZ,
      Thank you very much!
Now she looks exactly the way I imagined her in my head!
It remains to sew a down jacket and a hat ... everything is simple with a hat, I really hope to overpower the down jacket and then the planned image will be complete! (:

    30. @Bzika Ruby’s so style savvy! She looks beautiful. :3
Also, to answer your question from way back, Sabik is my big boy. My only MA (so far). :)

@Saiyaku I love your Saiph boy! He’s a beauty. I actually think I might prefer him as a boy. X3

14mm fits my Sabik - to respond to the eye question.
I love seeing everyone else’s MAs. :) Makes me want to redo my Sabik’s eyebrows and drag him out for a photo... eventually!

    31. *NatTheCat*, Thank You! I like outfits on k-pop style!^^
      Shi is my MA too!(:

And when you suddenly realize that an ARMY is wound up in your house! :doh

    32. [dusts thread]

I return~ to show that I am currently dyeing my Sabik's resin to restore a bit of natural warmth to his somewhat mellowed tone. So far, I am very pleased with the results! Unfortunately, I miscalculated the length of his legs (they don't fit in my stainless steel pot), so I need to get a larger pot to finish dyeing him! :XD:

However, here is a progress picture (his headcap, dyed, and his torso awaiting its turn).

It's very surprising how fine the line is between 'a natural skin warmth' and 'a bit sunburned' actually is - by the time I'm done, hopefully all will reflect 'natural warmth', and then I can negotiate a faceup for him. I've also ordered new string, and plan to suede him all over, as well as wire his legs (depending on the sueding and stringing).

      • x 6
    33. I LOVE seeing older dolls getting an overhaul, and your boy's dezombification process seems to be very successful so far. Do you use your own dyeing recipe? Is it hard to keep the tone even on all those different parts?
Had to snigger at the pot being too small - sometimes one forgets just how long these guys' limbs are. Now I must go check on my Sabik and Rex to see how far they've mellowed...^^ though I do not know if I had the courage to try dyeing... keep us posted, will you?

    34. Thanks for sharing your dyeing project with us. I love the idea of being able to revive some older dolls. I really don't want to let them go but I have a couple that are still very special to me but also have become very creamy in their skintone and starting to look perhaps a little unnatural compared to my other dolls. I'd love to restore some colour to them. I bought dyes but that's as far as I got. Can't wait to see how your guy turns out!

    35. Looking really good! Please keep us posted!
I need to bring my two boys into the light again and play with them. It's been so long.

    36. I finished dyeing Sabik! He's now restored to a lovely lifelike pinkish ns, which is precisely what I was going for. Here's some before and after comparison pics~

Now I can suede him (bought some genuine suede on the thin side) and restring him (when the suede and string arrive). I've never restrung a bjd before, just some vinyl dolls (they were awful to do), so I'm hoping bjds are easier. They certainly look it, so that's encouraging. Once he's all sueded and restrung, I can send his head, hands, and feet for art commission!

      Very thrilled~

    37. Nice job! Doesn't look sunburned at all!
I am well acquainted with that mellow yellow skin tone.
I'm going to try and haul my two Mecha boys out for photos tomorrow. At least one anyway. I was hoping to check them first today to see just how floppy their limbs are by now, and maybe tighten them, but that didn't happen. So we shall see if I can do anything with them.

    38. Ahh thank you, the second attempt (overall) went much better than the first. He was quite sunburned, after the first go! I adjusted the dye to compensate for that and the second result was much nicer.

I'd love to see your boys! If you're able to check, I'm curious what size string they have - I bought 4mm and 5mm on a friend's advice (one or both should suit), but I'm curious about the other Mecha Angels out there~

    39. The results look really good! I might need to look into this again. I'd love to revive some of my older (still loved) dolls. Thanks for sharing the results!

    40. Ahh I love them! Their outfits are very cool~

Antares is on my dream list (someday, the MP will provide)!

Good to know about the elastic! I ordered 4mm and 5mm, just to be safe. It seems like the kind I removed is 4mm, but I keep second-guessing myself when trying to check mm anything (lots of fun when we get to eyeballs, lol). Luckily SoulinaBox 14mm small iris eyes look great in my Sabik. It's also a common size so I'll have more colors to try him with soon, even if they're meant for other dolls.

    41. Oof, well, I've arrived at a question for ye owners of Mecha Angel boys.

This piece was loose in Sabik's chest cavity when I unstrung him. I took pictures to make sure I put him back together correctly, but this piece was in opposition to how it fits on top of his stomach piece.

How is this piece arranged inside your boys (if you're able to peep, I'd be highly grateful)!

    42. Another update - finished sueding my Sabik! I decided to simply glue the loose piece to the top of the stomach portion, as it fit the top of that perfectly. It seems like it's supposed to funnel the leg strings, maybe so they don't twang around and mess with the inside of the chest cavity. The 'floating loose in the chest' part seemed weird though, so now it's fixed in place with the same harmless PVA glue I used for the sueding.

Note: the camera made the suede look very dark, must be the color of the towel/early evening lighting. It's actually just natural tan. Next time, though, I might try and get beige or white if it's available, as my collection's due some ghost spirit folk soon enough~

Oh and his hip sockets and feet were the most difficult parts. Everything else was a breeze.

All's ready for when his new string arrives. Once I have him put back together, I'll dabble at drafting patterns for him and, hopefully before my birthday in May, see about commissioning face art/mani/pedi. He'll be fresh and new!

    43. I wish I could have been helpful to you but I have never even seen a male Mecha Angel so had no clue about that part but it seems you have it all sorted now. Very organised! It will be so cool to revive him as if he is new all over again. I am so impressed!! Thanks for the inspiration! I will need to experiment with one of my yellowed girls :)

    44. @Nissa Wow, the result looks fantastic! That's a lovely skin tone. Noticed my Sabik seems pretty yellow lately, but I don't think I'll change him. x3

And I know I'm no help now, but I'd say gluing that "floating chest piece" was a good call. I don't think that piece moves in my Sabik (I've never noticed it to, and never restrung him).

Looking forward to how your guy turns out. :3 I really should share photos of mine here sometime, but I'm not on the computer much at the moment. Maybe when his new wigs come in. :3
(Edit: changed my profile pic, which so happens to now be my Sabik.) <3

    45. Marcus and Bart look cool together :3
(What years were they made? Bart’s so pink!)

    46. I love that you took them outdoors for this photo shoot!

    47. Me too, they look great!

I'm on a bit of a mission (casual mission, haha). I'm curious about Sabik's original face-up art from Soom, on each of his incarnations. I might use one for inspiration for when I send my boy for his art ('might' being key).

Anyway, is there a list of the different Sabiks out there?

    48. lol I had to go consult my profile. :sweat

Marcus was made in 2007, and I got him second hand from the marketplace in 2009 with our tax refund that year.
Bart came directly from Soom and I ordered him about a split second after he was released in 2012.

I almost always take the dolls outside for photoshoots because the lighting inside is hopeless for photos. Plus it gets my lazy butt outside. ;)
My husband is into ham radio stuff, and they have a thing called Parks On The Air, where you take your rig out to a state park and spend all day trying to get as many unique contacts as you can from all over the world.
So he does that, and I take dolls with me and hit the trails if they have them and try to get a few good dolly shots. I've been trying to take the dolls that have few to no photos yet. Sadly, these two armfulls haven't had many photos! Probably because they do require a bit of wrangling.

    49. Neat, thanks for the info!

Also, that is kinda awesome that you can both go and just have your own fun. :3
Outdoor lighting is definitely the best - and the lake behind your guys is really neat.

(Meanwhile, I dragged myself outside through snow for Sabik’s photoshoot when it was maybe 10 degrees and I nearly froze, lol.)

    50. I believe there's three: the default look, Cyborg, and Angel.
(Mine is default, but I did add some watercolor pencil on top of his painted brows. I added blushing to his ears, lips, and nostrils as well.)

    51. Nice shot! I think I have braved the snow for a doll photo, all of... once. lol
I think my Sabik has the default.

    52. Thanks! :3 I don't normally brave the weather, but that time I did. x3

    53. Happily, my Mecha Angel Sabik is now fully restrung! Here he is, post unstringing, dyeing, re-stringing, his eyes, and finally finding a wig he and I both like oof~

I watched a handful of restringing videos but they all seemed to feature setting a knot in the string and then stringing the doll. I tried this method, but it ended up wasting some of my string, which was dear when you consider his 80cm size. So, I thought about it for a while, and figured out how to string him without fixing the knots in advance. This allowed my partner and I to tighten his string tension just how we liked before setting the knots, so now he's very snug and doesn't drape around. He stands as well as my Dika Doll Chengxun!

Now I can order him some clothes and hopefully snag an April slot for his faceup, hands, and feet! <3

    54. Huzzah! He looks squeaky clean and ready to go!
I like that wig. I hope to see lotsa photos.

    55. Oooo congratulations, he and your work are amazing! I would love to find out your restringing trick—I have my own draping MA Sabik flung out on his shelf

      • x 1
    56. So, a method used in the Volks SD16 and Graffiti girls is to fasten the elastic with a zip tie instead of a knot. The reason for that is so you can change the length and tension of the elastic when you swap between the heel and flat legs. The nice thing is that it also allows you to tighten them as needed.

I've considered using this method in other dolls for that reason, but have never gotten around to it. Something worth a try?

    57. It sure is! Thanks much
