General Mecha Angel discussion thread!

Thanks aernath. I'm so giddy about finally getting Mr. Sabik. Also, getting a doll early is a welcome change. All of the previous arrivals had some weird issues or took over a year to arrive. I think he'll start a new fashion: Bubble Wrap Loin Cloth: won't have time to do anything more until this weekend. I'm hoping for good weather to do his face-up and make a proper, fabric loin cloth

I put Mr. Sabik together tonight. He's so tall! Even my hubby was impressed. Mr. Sabik makes my Dollshe Bernard look small. Can't wait to set him next to my Narae.

Oh my gosh, his legs and arms are CRAZY! I love him so much.

I tried just sticking in the thigh pegs, but of course they just fall out again, so I am going to hot glue them, but I'm a little worried about re-positioning his legs. Do I have to pull his leg out of his socket and move it into the new hole? Does it really stay in place? I've gotten him to stand without it, but he's kinda wobbly.

It's oddly adorable.

 

I have been wanting a Sabik for years. Actually, my holy grail doll would be a Sabik Cyborg, but I don't see that ever happening. The Mecha Angels scare me though due to their size. Life has been so hectic this year that I totally missed the Super Gem size Sabik and I could just cry! I guess I will go on ahead and buy the Mecha Angel Sabik, but I cannot find clothing or shoes for him anywhere.

 

WOW!! MA are really are beautiful arn't they. I have only one but who knows someday--------

 

I can't believe I found this thread. I'd seen pix of Sabiks but no thread. Question for anyone who can answer it. I don't sew and haven't found anyone at all who sews for a Sabik elf. Can any of you suggest something? My guy is really tired of the make-do I've given him since he arrived last year.

I've actually never used the pegs. My guy seems to do just fine without. Sueding helps a lot, but even so, I don't think I sueded that part of him.
*chuckle* Sounds like a baby giraffe - all legs, gangly, wobbly, but adorable.

 

I second Aernath on the M3 studio. Got a lovely pair of pants for Goldfish there. ^_^ And if you need something a little more personal, there's a gal in the marketplace, Ayase001 if I remember right, who does lovely custom work. Most of what my mechas wear was made by her. ^__^

 

I keep an eye on the MP although that's hit or miss; mostly I make my crew's clothing. I'll have to check out M3 shop.

I'm not sure about those pegs, but they're glued in. Mr. Sabik needs a glue sueding. Good lord! He's fickle about the posing. Sometimes he stands like a rock, even in the oddest poses like this (requested by someone who wanted to see Dollshe heads on an MA body)



Other times, he fights me every step. I guess I'll have to find out what he likes perhaps..

 

I've found that if you pet them just right, and promise them treats, they will do whatever you want!

Thanks for the clothing suggestions. I ordered him a few days ago. How long do they usually take? I know, I know. Only a few days and I'm already asking is he here yet? lol! I know a phenominal seamstress that I'm going to see if I can talk into letting me pay her to sew some things for him.

 

Why arent there any databases for mecha angel generally? there are only for sabik, saiph, vega ect..... but what about us with Deneb's and the rest, where are we supposed to post??? TT__TT I Could start one myself, but i dont dare....

Hmm, perhaps it's because there was a general Soom database and there weren't many Mecha's around? Or we all put them there and didn't want to be redundant. No reason we can't have one though, I'll go make one.

ETA: new Deneb Database here! Can't help with the other ones because Deneb is the only Mecha I own, but databases don't have to be created by a moderator so don't be shy!

And there's also a Photo Reference thread for Deneb which really needs contributions from someone other than myself!

Guys, did you read the notice about closure of MA website? Somehow the message sounds a little strange to me... nothing really clear...

 

I noticed the announcement too and found it a little confusing.. Like, did they mean that they're only going to close the website and then sell Mechas on the Gem site or if they're going to end the whole Mecha line and make new versions of the existing sculpts in Super Gem size like they did with Saiph and Sabik? O_o If they're only planning to transfer selling Mechas to the Gem site, I don't understand why they gave such a "warning" almost half a year before..

 

Eek! I'm now posessed by the urge to try to buy another of the MAs before it's too late... Even though I really don't have the funds after attempting to buy bodies for all of my floating heads this year...

I really really hope the confusing message means the sculpts will come back in some form or another, like SuperGem form Sabik

 

ergh I wish they would just make new body sculpts like they did for the super gems. There's definitely a really good market for tall dolls out there and Mecha Angel faces are super beautiful!

Now that they have some competition in that height range with IOS 80s, Leeel's 90 and Lume doll's Usil, that may have hurt their sales a bit. Still think that if they just tried to refine the body sculpts they'd sell really well, especially since their price range was decent, not charging over $1,000 per doll like Leeel and Lume.

 

Ah, no, I hope they don't completely close the line! I was desperately hoping they'd open a special order period for the MAs in white skin sometime... I want my WS Vega! Now I'm killing myself for not snatching that Vega Last Song I saw on the MP a while ago... being a poor student sucks so much. T_T

 

I really want to get a Sabik so I hope they at least release a super gem size version. I wonder why they are giving up on the Mecha Angel line. It must not be selling enough I suppose.

"Actually the Mecha Angel site will be closed forever starting October 20th 2013.
However, we do not know if we will release the Mecha Angel as they are on the Gem site, or if they will be released as Super Gem dolls.
What is for sure is, we do not want to give up on these molds, and we want to offer them to our Mecha Angel fans with a new concept.
Please check it out later this year.^^"

For me MA size and slender body are one of their charming points, I can't imagine my Sabik on SG body... It's strange they are not sure what they will do... :/

 

Problem is that even though they are moving the Mecha Angels to the Super Gem site, that doesn't mean that they will still do the periodic pre-orders anymore. They have so many sculpts on the Gem site and they don't re-release dolls very often. For all we know, they will just sit there "sold out" forever and never get put back up for re-release unless enough people request a specific sculpt.

 

I wrote to Soom and they have said that they will still be selling Mecha Angels every couple of months up until October this year. I also asked if they were likely to release their sculpts in super gem size and they said there was no plans for that at present. Looks like I will have to get one in the next few months!

I'm pretty sure my Sabik would feign innocence and have set someone else up to take the fall. Possibly even with photographic evidence.

Does anyone know how the FFD events normally work? I really want to order Antares before the site closure, and was going to order him in the August FFD but everything is still showing sold out! I posted in the Q&A but I'm still waiting for Soom to get back to me... Having the five days span a weekend is nerve-wracking. Such a small window to miss.

Question: Male MAs - does anyone else have an incredibly shallow/possibly even slightly warped hip joint/torso joint? My Sabik can currently lean casually on stuff, but only with a rather Mick Jagger sway to his hips! Which takes off a good few cm from his overall height - I know I'll have to wire him, but I was wondering if it was common across the line?

 

So, I've been a MA fan for a long time, but finances and timing just haven't lined up so far (and other characters were higher up on the wish list). But it looks like I'll be doing my favourite maneuver of sneaking an order in at the last moment... So I'd love some opinions from current owners...

The jointed hands, are they worth it? I currently own zero dolls with jointed hands. I do have some friends with other dolls with other jointed hands, but they seem to spend more time snapping/twisting into weird poses than holding reasonable poses, even wired, and that would drive me batty.

And while I've been focussed on Sabik Elf since he came out (and Sabik before that, basically since Cyborg was released), reading through this entire thread today I started pondering Antares... So who do current owners think will make a better cat? (Character is from a race more advanced than humans, but is amused by closely observing humans, and said race is of feline derivation... not only will this MA be getting a tail, I'm thinking of painting him up like a tortoiseshell...)

Curse all you people with lovely Antares for making me doubt my decision at the last moment...

 

Some people really like jointed hands. Other people, such as myself, do not. I tried, I had four or five pairs from different companies at various points in time, but I hated them all. They just don't have the same elegant look as sculpted hands, they're difficult to get to hold a pose, and the thumb joint lacks the full range of mobility of a real hand which leads to very awkward posing at times. Obviously it's a personal preference, but unless you know you're going to be posing your dolls in such a way that they need the jointed hands, I'd pass. (And this from someone who's done over 100 photostories.)

As for Sabik vs Antares, I'm definitely on the Antares side. If I could come up with an excuse (and room!) for a third mecha, I'd be all over that guy.

 

thothep: i agree with tygati on the jointed hands. they definitely snap into weird positions and if you are not into that, then it is best to avoid them. that being said, i am a glutton for punishment and i buy them anyway. i think that the reason i buy them is to have 'odd' hands on my dolls. all of my guys have the fancy or jointed hands.

 

I'm one of the ones that loves jointed hands ^_^ I have them on nearly all my dolls! Soom's hands have a nice sculpted shape, but they aren't the best posers. I tend to like Loong Soul's best for posing because their thumb pad joint helps to add a bit more options. I blushed all my jointed hands so I think the sealant acts a bit like sueding, helping the fingers hold poses better or something. I seal with the fingers splayed and seal with them closed (knuckles all exposed).

hehe I'm on the Antares side too. Love mine. Never really got the lure of Sabik.

 

Hmm, sounds like I shouldn't bother with the hands. I know I love the MA hand sculpt (I've restrung a few for people in the past, and spent much of Ohayocon 2008's meet abandoning my doll here and there to follow a Sabik around like a groupie. And I'll probably be happier planning around static hands than getting a hand almost where I want it and having one finger not cooperate... even if that just the thumb limitations...

See, I like the look of the Antares, but I'm not sure he's a strong enough sculpt for the character of Kashak... a blend of wise old teacher and that old tom cat with the ear torn from fighting that every time you look at him you know he's only tolerating you because you can work the can opener. I think if Antares was a different size he'd be perfect for one of my other characters and would be on my wishlist immediately, unfortunately, the only character who can run to this height is Kashak (if I used Antares for the other character I'd need to find an 85cm Amazon...) Now, if anyone has a shot of an Antares looking distinctly mature Alpha male... (Soom's pics look too innocent.)

I have yet to take the plunge on jointed hands. Over the years, the dolls seem to have done well with the regular hands they come with. (Or sculpted extra pose hands.)

Sabik. Definitely. Antares has a bit of a frown and could possibly be alpha male, but the cat-that-ate-the-canary smirk is what makes Sabik so loveable. imho He KNOWS he's the alpha, and is amused by those that haven't figured it out just yet.
I really have to play more with these guys, but my Sabik seems to just ooze character, while Antares waits for me to fill him in on who he's supposed to be.

Anyway! That's my $.02.

Oh and congrats! I hope you get the one you want, and that he gets made quickly, perfectly, and comes right home, with no sightseeing along the way!

 

Well, as lovely as Antares is, he is a kitten, not an old tom from the alley, so I've got my first payment in on an Elf Sabik.

And I'm gonna hope Antares gets redone at a smaller size because I think he's even better for that other character than my original, discontinued plan...

 

So, perhaps I'm out of the loop and this may be the wrong place to put it but..... is Soom discontinuing the Mecha Angels? I went to go on their site yesterday or the day before and the link to the MA page was gone. It's still gone now, but I can access the site through my browser history.

Very mysterious. Thoughts on what's going on? I'm biding my time hoping to get a WS Saiph at some point.

 

Wilson, they announced a while ago that they are closing the Mecha Angel page and moving the Mecha Angels on the Gem page. They haven't mentioned if they plan on still releasing them on any sort of regular basis or not though as far as I know. So it's possible that they will be effectively discontinued in the process for all intents and purposes. Think people talked about it a bit on the last page or 2.

 

Ahhh. I've been out of the loop for over a year, thanks for filling me in. Should've looked back a page or two!

 

Also worth noting is that they stopped making white MAs a long time ago, and have consistently said they have no plans to make them in the future whenever anyone has asked.
They devote more attention to the Idealian line now, and I can't really blame them since the body engineering is better. But I still love the Mecha faces more! I think it would have been fantastic if Soom had re-issued the MA heads in the Idealian line.

 

I knew about the white, but I thought they issued white during one of the kit specials on Christmas... I might be mis-remembering. I'm pretty bummed about it, I love the mecha angel body sculpt. I like Idealians too, but... they're not the same *sniff*
