So far, my preference is largely for female dolls. I'm not sure why, I'm just drawn to them more. But I'm also a bit of a sucker for the tiny fantasy animals with no obvious gender, so maybe I don't really have a gender preference, just a "cute" preference, lol.
When I entered the hobby I only wanted male dolls, but then in the end most of my collection - past and present - are feminine bodied. To be fair, in the past 4-ish years I've only tried to shell my non-op, gender-nonconforming transman OC so although I was shopping for a feminine body and sculpt that really matched his body, it was for a male character. Now that that hunt is finally over, I might actually look for a male doll for his partner.... iiiinnnnn a year or two, when he is here and I got a better grasp of his scale and how to translate their height difference... ehehehehe
I currently have all girls (even within my non BJD fashion doll collection), with one male DD on preorder! When I first discovered the hobby, I actually wanted a ton of male dolls, but I guess I changed my mind! Eventually I'd like to add some masculine dolls to the family!
Girls only. I had a male but with his head, I instantly felt that he was too masculine that I hesitated to keep him. To be honest I just prefer female body
My collection is pretty mixed I have both but I'm more drawn to male dolls! My female dolls are all of beloved OCs or character I wanted to shell while my male ones are more driven by "he's pretty I need it" lmao
The goal is to have a mix but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tending towards males a bit more. I think with dolls I will just end up in the same position as with art OCs! Although I have to say, there are way more female dolls in the size category I plan to collect that appeal to me..that or having a lot of cute males. So who knows where I will end up!
My preference is definitely female dolls. Don’t even own a male doll. More than likely it’s because I am a female & can identify more with female based characters that I make up in my head.
Girls are just more endearing. Also I'm getting a girl doll that is forcing me to look at 70cm male clothes and that reminded me how narrow male fashion is. I'll have to go custom.
I looked back to my really old post here in 2019, when I was still trying to keep an even amount of boys and girls. Yeah, I gave that up awhile ago. Boys, Boys, Boys, Boys, Boys! My girls dolls might be a little more special because of how selective I am when choosing to get get them. But the boys are where my heart is.
have 1 male doll. the rest is female dolls .. so im leaning toward female. they are a lot easer to find clothes for - no matter the size. I do have one incoming male doll I ordered just in the start of december, so im looking forward to him. - finding things for him, have been a challenge, right now I just wait for him og take it from there.
I really prefer male dolls, I'm not sure why! Just bought my first ever female doll this year compared to my 5 male ones.
I only have male dolls so far. There’s a ton of very pretty girls, but after having had so many female playline dolls, I’m definitely more interested in male sculpts.
The availability of boy dolls was one of the things that got me going in BJD. With other types of dolls any boy availability was sort of an afterthought "Oh yeah, Barbie needs a boyfriend -let's give her Ken!" kind of thing. So I started with boys: AR Kai, BF Jerome, Elf Shiwoo....
My collection is all boys! Character dolls of the same two characters to be exact, have been shelling them in all sorts of scales and different brands/sculpts. I do like them quite a lot.
My first doll was a 1/3 female doll, but as I got into the hobby a bit more, I've come to realize I prefer male sculpts for 1/3+ sizes. For 1/4 sizes and below, I have a mix of boys and girls.
Boy dolls! I just like looking at men, lol. Honestly, what got me into the hobby in the first place was an otome game about BJDs turning into humans... I believe the company had a limited time deal with a dollmaking company to have character dolls of them. Will always lament never having got my hands on them. But outside of that... my OCs are a variety; male, female, nonbinary... But I also want to make dolls of characters from media I go crazy for, and those are usually men!
So far, it’s mostly been males. I think it possibly stems from a very rigidly gender specific upbringing. I had Barbies, my brother had action figures and G.I. Joe’s. We played together but on no account would my parents have ever gifted us with a doll of the opposite gender. So I never owned any boy dolls until I was an adult with my own money.
I generally prefer femme dolls. I don't want to limit myself to only femme, but for masc dolls I tend to more gravitate towards ones that would work for characters I have, while femme designs I can just be like I want it cause it's pretty.
I feel like I've only been buying male dolls, just really drawn to their aesthetics and how you can dress them up! I really like modern streetwear, dandy boy, and dapper suited-up boys. For me, it's also fun to cross-dress them or give them a more feminine aesthetic
I only like girls because I think woman are beautiful and I'm attracted to woman so I think that's why I love girls, I just want to have pretty feminine dolls with girly dresses, long wigs, etc. I know a lot of people style male dolls in feminine clothes and whatnot but I just prefer girl dolls.
I’m starting to get lowkey mad at myself for my apparent inability to like girl dolls LOL ah well I should just embrace my miniature masculine army
Same, but in reverse. My collection is all girls and I feel like it gives off a "no boys allowed in our treehouse" kind of vibe. I don't dislike boy dolls, but I have a much harder time feeling grabbed by sculpts or feeling inspired to style them in certain ways.
I'm totally biased towards girls because the entire allure of dolls for me is dressing them up. You can do that with a male doll of course, but the clothing options are much more limited. I also want the ability to twin with my doll(s) which would be difficult if they were a boy! I'm not putting on pants, so they better be ready to put on a skirt!
Very much biased toward boy dolls. I love going to meet ups where I can see other types of dolls too.
I love female dolls. I would like a male doll sometime in the future. And, admittedly, I’ve always dreamed of modding a doll to be both. Just happy to exist as any other doll would. I realize that might sound weird to some…
There’s actually a body that does that out of the box! The Abidoll Boy and Girl body has two different chests: one flat and one with boobs, and then it has a sculpted vulva, and penis parts that magnet over it. You can make that body any gender, cis or trans, or have it swap through multiple options. I have 4 of them and they’re awesome bodies!
I want to think I don't have a preference, but my doll stats don't lie. All my dolls are overwhelmningly female gendered in doll and character. Even my one male body is a female character xD I think I would like to add some male male dolls someday, but there hasnt been any to strike that just right feeling to prompt purchase just yet
My first doll was a girl because I thought that's what I was "supposed" to get as I'm a woman, so getting a male doll would be weird right? Lol. That was over a decade ago and I only recently started liking girls more. Totally biased towards male dolls and I collected only them up until recently. I have a lot of minifee, but I never counted minifees as female dolls for myself, only because I love them for dressing up/playing with the hands, but they never offered many boys (and the boys are impossible to dress). Fullsets just about always girls. So it felt like it was my only compromise. These days I'm annoyed with myself for STILL not being able to bond with girls, but it's changing. My feelings of what "bonding" means for girls is way different from boys, though. I don't think I could ever feel as deeply for a girl doll as I do my boys. I feel like boys are more open aesthetically than girls (for my preferences) and the traditional fancy, lacy doll-like dress for girls isn't too much my thing, so that cuts out a lot of options.
I like both male and female dolls. Though I will say I like dressing my girls more than dressing my boys.
I prefer female dolls in general, but I did end up randomly getting a male head b/c it looked scary I've figured out that I really like dolls that are a little unusual, so while I might prefer a female doll, it won't stop me from getting a male one if they're cool enough!
I don't really prefer one gender over another and I feel like I will go through phases over the months and years spending more energy on my guys or girls, but because I especially love sewing dresses over other types of clothes I usually end up with more girls in my collection at any given time.
All of my dolls, except one, are boys. Even though some may look a bit feminine with big lips and j-rock/k-pop makeup. I really don't know why but none of the girl dolls, except just that one (Coralreef Caroline), caught my attention. Yes, I like looking at girl dolls owned by other collectors but I don't feel I need any in my own collection.
Definitely more into girl dolls. I actually bought a male body for a head, originally planning to make the doll a dude, but she ended up a girl in the end. I love looking at other people's boy dolls, but I think they're just not for me. At least for now!
Ohhh my goooshhh! That is amazing! I’m so glad you mentioned that. I’m gonna have to add that to my wishlist!
At the moment I’ve got into the hobby I’ve been thinking that my collection would be dedicated only to female dolls. No guy is allowed, I thought. My girls are self-sufficient. Yes of course, a week ago I’ve got a realpuki Soso and then a pukifee Halloween Event 2014 (he’s definitely a boy). My small girls are happy. My bigger girls are asking for bigger guys now. I begin to think that males in my collection is not a bad idea…
