I only own boys, and I think that won't change in a while. I haven't found many female dolls that I would love so much I'd like to actually own them. (Lillycat's dolls are a total exception to this! I would any day take one.) Most of my characters are men, and this hobby is very much about shelling them to me, soooo... Yeah. I also usually always feel much more attached to male dolls than female dolls. Can't really explain, it has always been like this to me.
I have a pretty even split between the 2, with slightly more males atm. don't really have much of a preference either way.
I've only collected girl dolls for the most part; ended up selling any boys that came home because I just didn't bond with them. Sometimes I think I'd like a specific boy Volks releases, but then I realise I just like the head and want it on a girl body.
I have all girls except for one SDGr boy and one pukipuki who’s a boy. So that’s 4 SD-sized girls to one SD-size boy and my tiniest tiny is male. I guess I have a preference? It’s funny, though, because I love dressing my girls and thought they’d be easier to sew for. Nope. My big boy gets all the handmade stuff and my girls wear whatever I buy them.
that's the most relatable feeling ever!!! I fell in love with a fallen angel fullset, until I realized what I actually wanted was exactly the same doll, wings, and aesthetic, but a girl.
Before I ordered anything I would have said I have a preference for guys but both of my girls are…well, girls! This probably won’t change as most of my male OCs are older (the oldest one is in his late 60s) and would be very difficult to find sculpts for, while most of my younger OCs/favorite characters are female.
Interestingly enough I find myself drawn to the male dolls, as I love the photography the stores use for their models, along with their clothes and face sculpts. And yet I find myself intimidated by the sizes of the dolls I love... I have currently settled on purchasing a 1/6 YoSD female doll, as I love her mold and manageable size for a beginner!
Mostly girls here because their clothing options are so fun. Also, I'm not a fancy person IRL but I love dressing my girls in fancy things.
All but one of my dolls are girls, and rather feminine ones at that, to my surprise. I myself am quite butch and a part-time guy so I figured I'd probably like dolls Like Me, right? No, I've got one boy with a vaguely fem style and a bunch of girls with various, mostly feminine styles, too. I even tried dressing one as butch! But no! I was meh about her until I gave up last night and put her in a tube top and a skirt! (It doesn't help that she's a Resinsoul Zhen, so every pair of pants had to contend with her big ol' dragon feet.) I know I personally bemoan the lack of variety and fun in human menswear but come on. I have the chance to fix it for my dolls! Yet the clothes don't get made. And whenever I consider another boy doll, I look at their bodies and go egh, never mind. I just don't find them as visually appealing, I guess. I feel like with MSDs in particular, you get a lot more fun shapes and flow in girl doll bodies than boy ones, which are pretty much rectangles with limbs.
I have a nice collection of both boys and girls but definitely more girls...the boys are mostly surrounded. I've made one boy a girl and either way he's gorgeous but his face-up as a girl makes him the prettiest ever
Right now I have one girl and one boy, and I think I probably play with both equally, but enjoy sewing for my boy more cause it's easier, lol. I'm not sure I have a preference overall, I have another boy on my list and another girl (head only rn) on the way, so I think things will probably stay pretty even.
I prefer men! Probably because that's true in real life lol :P But also BJD girls don't normally fit my aesthetics, I'd love one if she were tall and intimidating instead of cute!
I only have female dolls but would like to get a male doll but usually their sculpts seem too feminine for my taste. But iplehouse has a nice vamp scupt I might get ..
If I look at all the dolls I've ever owned, past and present, I've had 4 girls and 4 boys -- but 3 of the 4 girls were mini/tiny (with one 1/3 girl), whereas all the boys were 1/3, though I've genderswapped one of them to be a girl. So I think it depends a lot on doll size. The smaller sizes just had/have more variety of girl sculpts and styles that interested me. Now I'm focusing just on 1/3 sized dolls and no longer have any smaller ones... and I definitely lean towards males. I currently have one boy and two girls - but one of the girls is that genderswapped boy head on a girl body (it's a very androgynous sculpt, and the character herself is quite androgynous in style). The two dolls I'm going to bring home next are both boys -- and I'm looking forward to that, because I just want more boys around. I do like having girls around, but when I browse photos or product pages, I find myself always looking more at the boys. Since I currently have a small crew, I think the gender balance will end up more boys, but not by too much.
I only have one doll and it's a girl. I originally wanted a doll that's gender neutral but inspiration struck when I came across the sculpt for my doll!
I highly prefer boys, but I have girl dolls, too. As to the why, it probably has something to do with not finding girls' aesthetics as interesting. Even when I do dress my girls, they tend to dress very masculine. I find that cuter than them being all dolled up, tbh. Only one is cutesy, as in her character didn't really come alive until I bought her a petticoat. Now I plan to buy her all the cute dresses I've seen but never had a doll to put them on. I'm going to spoil her rotten!
I have both in the past but currently I have only guys. But if u ever have extra funds I like to buy more girls I feel I prefer them as I like to make girly outfits and hair and such
I prefer guys more. As all of my original characters are guys I kinda lean towards it. Not to mention I like guys clothing a bit more.
I started off with mostly female dolls and they're still the majority, although I always preferred male dolls. It's much easier to buy/make clothing for female dolls and my male dolls end up being dressed as girls since I can't find/make clothing that matches them.
I have five vinyl dolls and three resin, and they're all girls. This is my perspective as a guy. For action figures or anime PVC sculptures, male characters can be "cool," and I might like to have them if I like the game / series that they are from. But my BJDs are not "cool" like that. They are instead "beautiful," and they require more intimate handling. I am thinking of things like dressing them, styling their hair, posing them, shopping for goodies to treat them with, etc. All of that is just a bit whimsical and romantic. I feel and appreciate a doll's beauty much more when the doll is female. I would hazard a guess that the (straight) women and gay guys who collect mostly male dolls also find themselves more easily and fully able to appreciate the beauty of wonderfully made male BJDs. Women have some motivations for buying female dolls that I don't have; such as wanting to have a doll that looks like themselves. This is a big thing for kids, at least in the US where I'm from. "American Girl" dolls are supposed to "look like you!" So they're kind of a twin, and kind of a friend. I'm quite different from all that, and so I'm probably much more like the women who buy mostly male dolls.
I might look into a masculine doll once I get more settled into the hobby, but I've always aesthetically liked the look of feminine dolls more. I can sew better for them too.
I have both, but I vastly prefer girls. They’re much easier/fun to dress in the specific size I collect.
Definitely girls! I just seem to be more interested in their sculpts and always gravitate towards the girl dolls. Maybe one day I will end up getting a boy doll but for now, it's staying all girls. That an I find dressing up and sewing for girl dolls far more interesting!
I originally only planned on having girl dolls, mostly because I just hadn't seen any boy dolls I was drawn too. I tend to like to dress my dolls in styles that I'd love to try myself but would never feel comfortable doing, which is probably why I feel more drawn to girls. However I recently fell in love with a boy sculpt and ended up purchasing it, so I'll be adding a boy to my small but growing collection
My preference... is definitely boys, be it hyper-masculine guys, very feminine ones, and everything in between. I've got... 31 dolls and literally only 3 are girls. Granted 4/6 dolls in my wishlist at the moment are also girls, but that would still only make it a 30 to 7 split, so... I don't know what it is. I just find male characters more interesting to develop, and, as an extension, to dress, and have around as dolls.
I've got a ratio of about 2:1 girls to boys currently but it fluctuates. I mostly pick dolls based entirely on whether I like their sculpt and can think of an interesting way to style them, whatever their gender happens to be is secondary. I've got some dolls that fall into the genderless section as well such as some fantasy tinies and some of Lutz's SD muse bodies.
I definitely prefer boy sculpts (or so I thought) but I find my collection is pretty close to 1:1. I care more about over all feeling of the doll than if it's meant to be male or female. I think with a lot of girls I like the faces but the chest pieces can sometimes have really strange proportions or shapes that put me off - I'm not a fan of giant anime bosoms. Everyone in my collection has small busts.
I only have girls right now although Dollfie Dream Kaito is preordered. He's going to be a lucky guy! I did enter a Volks lottery for a Super Dollfie boy last year, but was unsuccessful.
I’ve always preferred male dolls! I think it’s for a few reasons… when I was growing up I consumed a lot of “boy-centric” media, or something.. Like how all of my favorite anime/other shows always had the coolest male protagonist, so I looked up to them a lot! Plus, all of the bands I listened to were either all-male or male-fronted, and I also looked up to those guys. For that reason I made only male characters for years, lol. I’ve never been super interested in feminine clothes like skirts or dresses, so that’s another reason why I have a bias towards guys. I am open to having girl dolls in the future since I have girl characters, and they’re super cute! But I think I need to satisfy the urge to shell a few more of my boys before I move onto my girls :b
I like to have both in balance. So I can have fun dressing both male/female. So far I have both genders in all scales in my collection although I’m not that into boy/male. I simply cannot find male doll that I like even though I do want to have them. I used to assign two characters on one doll when I had only one doll in that scale.
I seem to be pretty evenly matched! The first ones I feel in love with were boys, then the first ones I liked in the scale i collect were girls, and if i look at the ones i have and the ones i have planned it's about even! Most of my OCs seem to be girls though.
I never really thought I had a preference until I got my first girl doll. I find there are more clothing options that I like for female than male, plus my male doll is 73cm and thus impossible to find anything outside of his original outfit. So I will probably never get another boy doll, because I don't have the confidence to clothe them :'3
I only own girls but it wasn't my intention. I Hava had boys, but never felt bounded to any of them, so I sold them. I enjoy girls because I find them more versatile.
It’s not exactly a preference, but like others I find girls easier or more fun to dress and style. I have 5 boys and 17 girls at the moment.
I only have one boy in my collection but I do want more. I seem to like girls better and I have better taste in styling them lol.
I love androgynous dolls as I feel like I can dress them in anything but if I had to choose, I do prefer girl dolls, if only because I find sewing their outfits just a little bit more fun. I enjoy the challenge of making a really nice-fitting top! My collection also leans more small & anthro/ fantasy, so I don't associate them as much with human gender norms to begin with!
I'm always looking at boys but funny enough, all my "finished" dolls are actually girls. I only have one boy, more precisely a body and a floating blank head. But I don't really prefer one to the other. I love both gender
I like the aesthetic of anime girls so all my dolls are anime styled girls (also the reason why I am in the hobby to begin with). I’m open to the idea of an anime boy dolls but its not something I’m planning on getting.
I only have girls at the moment, but that's just because I'm waiting on a male doll to arrive! I would definitely love to get more boys for sure. I'm really into the anime aesthetic, and would love to see more male anime styled dolls in 60cm+ size
I only collect smaller dolls (MSD) and so far I haven't found any male ones that I like. All good sculpts that I've found are mostly 65cm+ and that's too big for me. So all of my dolls are (currently) female :3
I have more male dolls; no particular reason why. I had more female dolls back when i collected Pullips.
I don't know why, but whenever I see female dolls, no matter how pretty they are or how impressive they look, they never seem to leave an impression for some reason? But when I look at male dolls, they somehow captivate me? And I fall in love with their sculpts. Not to say female dolls are bad or anything. It's just that, no matter the size, from tiny dolls to hefty 65cm+ dolls, female ones don't bond with me. I've looked at quite a few styles and sizes, but it seems they reject my companionship. But I definitely have a preference for male dolls. Everything under 1/4 size does not seem to like me either and I prefer the style and articulation of 1/3 and up BJD's. But I can make an exception for 1/4 ones if they check all the boxes of my preferences. Maybe I haven't encountered the right female doll yet.
I have owned two cis male dolls, and I couldn't enjoy them. Something about the male dolls really throws me off. Now I enjoy other people's male dolls, but I stick to dolls with female bodies currently. I do have a Doll Chateau Cecile on one of the really exaggerated DC female bodies, but that OC is mtf trans. In my mind, Mina (the afforementioned OC), has a very deep voice still and has decided to not do any vocal training, yet did decide to undergo gender affirming surgery (meaning the body she is on is post surgery). I keep meaning to add some light scarring to her body to indicate surgery. I like playing with gender with my dolls, but mostly on the fem side of things most likely because I fall into that category rather effortlessly even with my head totally shaved like it is right now. I would someday like to try having some male dolls again, but they will likely be rather gender nonconforming.
I have only girls! I don't know why, because I know many beautiful boy dolls like kpop idol (I love kpop) but maybe I am obsessed with female body and feminine clothes, accessories and more
I'm much more drawn to girl sculpts—this isn't really unexpected for me since I have overwhelmingly more girl characters than others. But when it comes to BJDs I just feel like they have far more clothing/accessory options (and really cute ones!) and their sculpts are usually more aesthetically beautiful to me. I've found myself really drawn to the way certain companies shape their dolls' hands or legs. Also, I mostly want to collect dolls that are similar in scale to each other so that they can interact and 70cm+ male dolls are a little intimidating as someone who's still waiting on their first 1/3... Though I think if I saw a guy sculpt that I liked enough to buy, I'd get it! But for now even if I think a sculpt is beautiful I haven't fallen in love with any enough to think putting down money is worth it. On the other hand, so many girl sculpts have given me that feeling so far!
I prefer girl dolls. I just don't connect to boys, and I feel bad having a doll laying around when I don't connect to it. I like dressing my girls up really femininely, so I suppose that if I had a boy doll that wanted to dress that way, I would connect to him, but I have not found a sculpt that I would want to make a feminine male.
I just like cute boys a lot. Pretty much all of the dolls I customized are meant to be boys too, though the majority of "fullsets" (they're mainly Azone fashion dolls) I have are girls. I just don't bond to girls as much as I do boys, and on top of that I have a lot more male characters I want to make into dolls too.
I don't think I have a gender preference. More of a sculpt style and size preference more than anything. I prefer more realistic dolls in MSD and up sizes. However, these days I am leaning more towards boy dolls as that is the gender that I am building a character from.
I do not own any male dolls. But all of my female dolls have different gender identities. Multiple of them are either non-binary or gender queer. I haven’t found a male doll I’ve fell in love with but I love fem presenting dolls easily probably because my own gender identity is fem presenting genderqueer lol
I LOVE my girl. I really do. I think I'll always favor female dolls, they're just pretty, and I have a long track record of almost always playing with female characters. ...but she needs some male companionship, and now my problem is narrowing the selection down to one.
Girls, for sure. I've seen some boy dolls that I can appreciate, but some are cartoonishly muscular in a way that I just can't dig. Frankly, it's probably a hangover from the fashion doll world, where most of the male dolls just aren't worth bothering with. I think I've been trained that "pretty doll" = girl. and it's hard to get deprogrammed from that!
Definitely girls, but I'm open to looking for boy sculpts that I could like. Just haven't found anything that speaks to me yet.
I've only ever collected boy dolls, the only girls that have appealed to me have been limited or really hard to find ;-;
This is a great question and it's fun to see other member's answers. My preference is for females over males.
I only have girls and mostly look at girl dolls. Feel like not a lot of boy sculpts in the size range that I like (40-50cm) end up appealing to me for one reason or the other, but for character reasons I’d love to find one that does someday.
I honestly seem to gravitate towards males myself. I actually like androgynous males or feminine guys that I can dress to be cute of course. One thing that I can say is its hard to choose a body since most of them are quite too masculine for my taste in what I'm going for in larger sizes above 68cm. I'm not adverse to female dolls though my first one will be my character I created in game in FFXIV. I just really wanted to have him with me is all!
