Flat-Face, my secret shame

May 23, 2011

    1. Fish lolipop! :D

If you look back at the news forum on DoA they actually do call dolls off-topic dolls if they don't fit the asthetic they say charicterises ABJDs. :(
And they haven't updated thier wiki in a long while.

      I think you'll be fine though :3

    2. Oh goodness (lol, butchers knife is great!), I can't wait to see him cast! Haha, the expressions you've given the faces sofar are awesome, I'll be looking forward to seeing the grumpy one. ^o^

    3. You are my new hero! :love :love :love I like several of the anthros out there, but none of them have this much personality. I can't wait to see one in resin!

    4. The main cat is done but it may be best to photoshoot him in sunlight eg tomorrow morning. British weather, don't you dare betray me >: (((((

I'm working on that scary Cheshire face. It's the same as it was the last time I took pictures. The meat cleaver is done btw. :XD along with little chips in the blade and screws in the handle + a holding hand. Baked it too long in the oven. Literally walked away and said to myself "don't set a timer, it's only small..." and it was dark before I took it out. Still fine though, oddly enough. :/

    5. I keep coming back to this thread to see if there are any new pictures =0)
I love your shameful, flat faced kitty, AND your scary, world dominating, Cheshire kitty. The meat cleaver and fish lollipop sound fantastic =0)
      Might we have more pictures?
      Please and thank you!

    6. Get ready for this, people. It's gonna be an avalanche of FlatFace.

.... Oh, what ever happened to Mitsy? Meet COW MAIDEN...

Sorry couldn't get Cheshire or Grumpsome up. I knocked out all his teeth and tried to replace them with neater, sharper ones. I've been sanding and priming the little (7", or 20ish cm) kitten for the last two and a half days straight and I am damn tired of it. Thank god he's not an SD.

    7. [IMG]

      One for the road. NOYOUCANNOTHAVEMORECHEESE.

    8. She/he is sooooo cute :o, I would definitely buy one if u cast one.
the sculpt is soo perfect and wholesome for both kids and adults.
You should definitely make that cat puss in boots.:))

    9. I just can't express how much I need one of these! Actually, I would need two- the cute smiley you-know-you-love-me one and the creepy cuddley Cheshire for a litter-mate. :dead Aaaand maybe the grumpy one, too, because you know, the other two might get lonely. :D

    10. You could totally use that body sculpt and make a toddler bjd! It would be so cute. Most of the kid bjds are too skinny.. Don't they know young kids have baby fat?

    11. Mitsy was supposed to be a child bjd but she totally flopped when my batch of apoxie sculpt got infected with some kinda fungal bacteria stuff and I couldn't touch it anymore. I think Fairyland get kids right with their Pukifees and Littlefees so I don't have any motivation to go into that area of bjds anymore. However anthros need some serious work. Most of the bigger companies will have a cat/ animal bjd but it's very often just churned out and flavourless. But, if you'd like to make toddler bits for one, go for it :XD

    12. I love the hands especially! - they're spot-on cat!! Flat-face is just plain addictive - we neeeeeed to see more!!

The only thing that worries(?) me (apart from the fact that he's clearly bi-polar) is the visibility of the slot in the neck joint. I notice it because I had the same concern with Pirooz... thinking now of using a cup thing to hide it...

      Shame about Mitsy :'(

Oh I don't think I ever mentioned how much I admire your concept sketches!!

      That is all. :D

//EDIT// Wait, no, I'm back (sorry)

But I was just going back over the earlier pictures and I realised how the face has changed. I'm sure it's just my personal preference and not anything wrong... but
I quite liked the way the eyes/eyelids were less defined before. His expression is different between the two stages:

Just wondering whether the earlier stage was more cat/less human if that makes sense!

      Ignore me.

    13. I'm taking a mini break from priming n' such tedious duties ATM but when I get back to it, I'll experiment with the eyelids. I was curious about the eyelid problem m'self as some people just draw the crease of the eyelid on with a very thin brush.

The slot is rather distracting come to think of it. I only really noticed when I took the recent photos. @.@

Btw, do you want Mitsy? I'll take the horns and stuff off her and you can take her and do whatever you want, haha. I'm just not willing to cast her or worknon her anymore and after about 5 Vieras, I'm starting to run out of space. :XD can't move for bloody homemade bjds

    14. Mitsy is cute. I think it would be hard to make toddler bits to go with the flat-faced kitty when I don't know anything about his sizes.. I'm sure I'd fail :\

    15. I like both versions of the head, but the most recent one is less baby-ish and more naughty toddler-ish. The first one looks like it wants to be cuddled, and the second wants to go on grand adventures and is awfully good at repartee =0) The paws are flat out the best anthro paws I've seen. I also love the fringe of fur about the shoulders. You have some really great detail work in this sculpt.
I would definitely want to buy both cats from you.

    16. *sets out a dish of tuna and cream*
      Here kitty, kitty, kitty!

Any luck getting through the soul-sucking tedium of primering and sanding?

    17. In fact, I agree... ^^
I've got the same opinion, and it is true, this doesn't mean anything is wrong, it is just our feeling !

    18. His eyes are different now. The lids are different; more smoothed down and subtle like he used to be. I'll update tomorrow, perhaps! He's been on a big journey and he's almost finished and ready to cast. I'm just nervous about how this factory-business is going to work as it's a LOT of money handed over.

Haha, it's weird that you guys haven't seen him in so long, hes improved. :3

    19. Can't wait to see more photos!

That first chunk of money to the factory is intense lol Just make sure you have them send a sample to approve before they begin the full production. Don't be afraid to mention things that need to be improved or changed when you get the sample either. They are there to make you dolls the way you want them to look and they are really good at listening if you have any concerns :) That is at least if it's the same factory we were talking about before lol I don't have experience with any others since this one has been really good to me.

    20. what a cute little cat !

    21. <Note - Photobucket isn't resizing my pictures again so you'll have to deal with the huge file sizes. Sorry!>

OK! Here we go. He's been out on my very first doll meet with me and everyone loved him. Some people asked to buy him but are now going on my first preorder list. ^^

I adjusted the eyelids as people asked; I did noticed how buldgy they looked and I didn't like it either.

Here's him in a Yo-SD sized dress although hes only 7" tall. The shoulders dont fit so it's an off-shoulder frill.

Baha comparison photo. Old Baha body doesn't pose as well as mine but I might see a new body with cheshire face soon. Speaking on Cheshires, mines under construction still.
It's amazing how they look together. It's the same as the image I had in my mind. Especially as I've never seen a Baha before and that all I had to compare were measurements.

People also posed him in ways I didn't think of before.

      He's also enjoying my re-ment sushi's. I'm spoiling him. :3

I've learnt to hold back on the primer until all the sanding is as smooth as you can get it because ladoll just doesn't hold onto primed surfaces.
I've also learnt that you need to love a doll to finish it. I threw Viera in the bin yesterday. (Incase you've just tuned in, she's the 5th try of an SD body.) I think I'm going to stick to funny shaped anthros for now. Flat-Face has a new friend coming up, btw. More updates soon.

    22. So cute :) I am very excited for you that your kitty is close to being done.

    23. LOL Jphobia - If I lived closer - I'd smack you with your own awesomness and you'd end up in the middle east when you landed ;)..... You are soooooo talented m'dear!! By the way.... can I have one???

    24. I can smack her for you, if you like! :p

Jph, he/she is looking adorable! And the range of poses is really great! I'm imagining him in all sorts of different coloured resins and can't wait to see him 'in production'! It's great you are getting positive feedback now to keep the momentum going! How can anyone not love that face?!

BUT you didn't SERIOUSLY THROW VIERA in the BIN??? >:O

...You are going to have to make the most amazing #6 in order for us to forgive you! :p

    25. So Kawaii <3

    26. But Viera was so amazing.. D: I think they would be super cute together!

    27. This looks fantastic!! All your hard work has most definitely paid off and i think you should 100% go for it and sell your dolls. People will definately buy him/her!!

    28. Oh.My.GOODNESS! He keeps amazing me - he's just too cute! T_T I've never really been into anthro dolls before, but this little thing.. I just miiiiight have to give him a try....

    29. The kitty... a lot of progress! And you have proved it is possible to make a perfect chubby doll. I love it.

    30. Thanks for the comments! He's officially finished today. I'm working on sending him off to someplace which will cast a prototype in resin. (Maybe they'll give me the molds! ....Sif I'd know what to do with them though...)

She's dead! It was really pitiful to see her. She was still strung in the bin amongst the fish skins and apple cores. D: I think my heart is just elsewhere; I've yet to make a desirable SD
Maybe Viera 6 will be made one day. After seeing real SD BJDs (I saw a real Soom biggun! /drool/drool/drool) I couldn't go back to her. She was too different in size and proportions.
Maybe I could try my hand at casting some coloured ones... If I knew how. ;_; HEY! You live local, can't we cast Omnia and Flat Face in the same pot? (You can have some for free! :XD) I'd love a nice granny-smith green kitty, or mebe a lovely lilac-y purple one!

      D: That's a terrifying compliment. Thank yous! I'll make a site with pre-order slots.

Thank you for your help, Mistic! Today I looked at him in all his shiny-smoothness and I was almost jumping around at how near he was to casting. :D:D:D I don't know how you can't just resist taking all 50 of your bebes in a pile and just roll around in them.
His fatty goodness worried me at first but I realise that people don't mind if anthro dolls don't fit other bjds clothes (Like the dreaded Pipos Baha's clothes), as long as they're cute.
HAH! I have turned one! I've always had a thing for anthro dolls but would never have thought to make one until my night of crazy cat lady fit. It was like my brain was spilling ugly cats.

      -
I actually didn't know how well he was going to be recieved until that meet but people couldn't stop playing with him. I'm actually surprised at how poorly other small dolls pose compared to Flatty (Apart from Fairyland dolls which IMO are brilliant :D). I was really anxious about how well he was doing compared to the other dolls so I tweaked him and tried so hard to get him as posable as I could (Eg, Arms holding at any position and knees too.) and quite frankly I reckon for the price you pay for company dolls, standards really ought to be raised. :/

    31. :dead ...... :love
I'll have you know that since I first saw your Cheshire and started getting ideas I've been dreaming of him in a light-ish heather purple/ lavender color and little flat face in a soft sort of duck-egg blue-green- both with tabby stripes. I have this vision in my head of sweet kittens like from a Victorian postcard mixed with a bad acid trip.

And just so you know, your kitty got the ultimate compliment yesterday. My toddler (who thinks my dolls are interesting but not as cool as, say, his Transformers) actually squeeled out loud and grinned so big you could see both of his dimples when he saw Flat-face. We're talking ear-splitting squeel of doom. So yeah, no matter what, I have to try to get a kitty.

    32. He's cute, Jphobia. Like I said before, you really should cast him. ^^

    33. ...Is that necessarily a bad thing? Lillycat's dolls, for example, are an atypical shape and size and we all love them! :o
A pressure pot? - I don't have one! Plus it may be centuries before Omnia gets to the casting stage :dead I wouldn't mind trying to cast some coloured kitties for you. The only thing is the pigment (that I use) is blooming expensive (compared to all the other supplies) so it would probably be better if we stuck to only a couple of colours.
... I love the way Enaibi casts two-tone resin pieces, like this.

    34. so cute Jphobia! great job.

    35. This puddytat is sooooo cute.. omgosh. That poonchi belly! *p-pokes it*. It IS amazing how well he fits in with the pipos kitty too, that's quite nice. I hope you get him cast, can't wait to see him all finished up.

Nearly had a heart attack to read you threw out Vieria though. Man I'm sad now, she was pretty wonderful imo. Nothing wrong with having different sizes/proportions.. heck I only have one real BJD (a kid delf), so I have no clue how my sculpts compare to other companies and idc.

    36. Ohhhh I really love him! My favourite part is his poochy belly...I am such a sucker for round lil tummies. :)

I, also, hope that you decide to cast him and let him travel (to auntie Ranger12's house). :XD

EDIT: I read the thread back to front so now I'm seeing things which I should have seen before...like this.
Personally, I would much rather have an artistic, detailed, well shaped and posable doll and run the risk of having to make clothes myself, than settling for a mediocre doll with lots of wardrobe choices. :)

      Your kitty is total:<3

EDIT2: ok I promise I will stop editing after this but I finally made it to page 3 in my backwards reading. I just saw your sketches and I totally LOVE the anatomical one with his heart and guts, lol. And the two pointy fingers...like he is plotting his world takeover in his evil little kitty mind.

    37. Haha! That made my day ^^ I have toddler approval, the highest grade of approval <3
I've got ideas for a soft light blue version. It's lucky that white is the cheapest default colour because I want to be able to decorate them with kitty tattoos and
      lots of colours :3
Unfortunately, I've torn him up a bit so he's in WIP mode again. I felt kinda self conscious the last minute because of the weightyness of his head so I'm reducing it's width. Also added some more fat to the legs which I really like now. :3 The extra chub makes him look more normal from the side,
Woah, the same as me! Only ever owned one MSD (NOT speaking about that one filthy time with that cheap bobobie that I eventually sold on >.>) Maybe you should go to a doll meet with your Unicorn boy. You can test it against other dolls of the same size and you can see if your joints really are bad, or it's just your imagination, like what happened with me :XD. Speaking of Uni-boy, I drew him yesterday with my Rat-Maiden seducing him. :3 I'll show you later...

Edit all you like, I need the feedback/crit. I saw this post and remembered I still had work to do on this thing. :XD
I still want to do a slim body for the cat like the other drawings. The pointy finger one was what the head of FlatFace is based off because he was most round.

Might post more pictures soon. I need opinions on things. :/

    38. Yeah, that news about Viera getting tossed in the dust bin made me sad as well. :(

I was reading yesterday about a Project that does traveling dolls. A team will form, and each member of the team will start a doll, then send it on to the next team member to work on, until all the dolls on the team are finished. Ah, I found the link... here it is:

      Travelling Doll Project
      http://adotravelingdollproject.blogspot.com/

So here is my idea :sweat
When someone gets so frustrated with a WIP doll that they feel like tossing her into the dust bin, why not ask if someone would like to do some work on her instead? Then ship her off to the dollmaker that wants to rescue her from the incinerator, dust bin, or whatever? :dead

      :XD

    39. I agree with kwmelvin! Especially because, then that doll would certainly be unique hehe.

    40. Oh how I love your kitty. The expression and shape is to die for. If I had enough money and you cast him I would buy him in a heartbeat and he would be my first BJD. =) That is how much I love him.

    41. ummmm...Fatty Kitty Flat Face for president!!!!
And yes...tatoos with lots of colors sound amazing. Can't wait to see more updates. :XD

KWMelvin I totally love that idea! It sounds like quite a few of us have "multiple-project syndrome" anyway. And I think each artist has unique strengths. It would be amazing to see what this group could create together.

    42. Ahh I wish there were dollmeets near me. Got to move to Vancouver for that ;;. But you may be right, I've been working in paperclay again and am thinking it may be the weight of the polymer clay +smoothness of the joints giving some of the trouble, so I'm fretting over it less. Haha, poor bobobie.. actually I had a Hound a while ago too, forgot about him lol, but his body was the worst for posing so it's not much to compare to. I'm thinking of getting another (or two) dollies lately.. I've always wanted some sort of slim mini girl, and there's this large boy coming out sometime who is hard to resist (despite swearing against SD size dolls after Hound). So that would be helpful too. /ramble

Anyway OMG MUST SEE Uniboy and Ratmaiden drawing!! I can't believe you drew them together *tremble* And btw I laughed but he would so totally be the one getting seduced. I'm working on the girl version and posing them together he looks so uncomfortable and shy around her hahaha.

    43. I was looking at some photos of her on my phone this morning... and crying in the rain (lol jk) and I was thinking that would've been great. I would've loved to see what someone else could do with her because I can't deal with large dolls the same as I can't do large paintings. (Does anyone else get that here? D: ). She was so damn skinny though it was annoying. And 5cm too short for my liking. I've been getting the itch again. You may see Viera 6 soon. If not JUST a head. If that one does go wrong, I will send her to one of you before I lob her out in the rain.

... The Hound? D: D: D: (If you read, I totally recommend Game of Thrones) I've never owned an SD but it does seem mighty tempting. When I saw that SD Soom I was playing cool like "yeah, she's nice" but dying/weeping on the inside TT________TT"

I'll post my pix in awhile. I lugged my scanner over to my flat and found out theres no goddamn cables. -_-

TODAY IS THE DAY OF CASTING! (derp, for someone else)
      >:O:<3>:O:<3

Today I've got him ready and shiny and he's going to the 4D Model Shop in London to be cast as a prototype. The guy told me it'd take a week because I didn't want to bump the price up and make it a high priority thing. It's a shame because I wanted to have him done for a meet on Sunday.

      I'll update soon!

    44. Best Wishes for success with the making of the prototype, Jphobia !!!
      :)

    45. Thanks KWM! I just heard they might smash my master up in the process D: Need all the luck I can get

    46. Good luck!! i'm sure it'll go well though, no need to worry. :)

    47. Can't wait to see next picts >x<
And don't worry, Armeleia is right, everything will be OK.

I don't understand why the Master could be smashed... o_O
They don't make their molds with silicon ?
What will the "prototype" be made of ?

    48. Yikes !!!
      They sound like incompetents.
Professionals should be able to mold an eggshell without smashing it.
      What is their problem?

      Any news?

      in·com·pe·tent
      /inˈkämpətənt/
      Noun: An incompetent person.
Adjective: Not having the necessary skills to do something successfully.

    49. Smash it up? :sweat I cast my dolls all the time and still have my originals although I do admit a couple of the really thin parts may have chips in them. Maybe I should have suggested that you ship your little one to me for prototyping ;)

    50. Are you offering prototyping services? (Just kidding !!!)
      :)

    51. I've considered it lol I only know things from my own experiences of trying things, but I think I am pretty good at what I do ;) Maybe some day.

    52. Haha no but he looks awesome, I wish xD It was a Dollshe hound- pretty face and sculpting but his body drove me nuts. Oh~ I tried watching that show and didn't really like it, but everyone says the books are great so maybe I'll give it a try. Can't wait to see the pic when you're able to get it scanned too :)

Okay now exciting!! I hope the casting went well and they didn't wreck your original (wtf?) D: update sooooooooon please!
That's awesome you could find a place in London to do the proto btw, how much did they charge for the service?

    53. I decided yet again to hold it to make it the best that I can. I reckon I should add a lock in the stomach to hold him while he slouches, and I want the headcap to be perfect as I'm making it compatible with all my small-animal faces. I'm just extremely nervous about having 50 of them with a LITTLE bit of something that bothers me. But I've also been thinking of a lovely MSD art doll while I've been fretting about my kitten. :3 Please do not hate ;.;

      Here is an offering:

    54. Ahaha omg she's actually a rat I'm surprised! :XD That's pretty cute even if her affections look rather painful.. what a pushover he is, tsk. The drawing itself is so lovely, I'm amazed by the likeness. So cool to see him drawn by another's hands! Though now I want to see the rat maiden better too, she's a bit hidden behind mr.baldie :-o

Re: the kitty, that's understandable, I'm the same way with the uniguy (keep changing this that and this again). It's all this finishing work that takes so long. Oh well keep at it and good luck!

    55. Kitten news coming up!

It's been a long time! The 4D Modelshop in London isn't the place to go if you want a doll prototype... I was there one long afternoon waiting for a quote and for one 7" doll; it's £1,400. I laughed and picked up £85 worth of casting materials.

In need of immediate help now >.>; (Dont worry, I'll smooth those rough parts of plastercine :XD)

Q: For all those little ear floofs, will these gates be sufficient?
Scary stuff, this casting business.... That's why I put it off for so long >.>
Also, anyone with pictures of head molds, please post them here! I find this sorta baffling.

    56. So lovely cat! I wish you good luck with castings. sorry I can't help, I am very afraid of resin castings myself! =)

    57. When I made my silicone mold for my dolls head, I had all gates and pour holds coming from the inside of the head. I tried to place the seams where it can't be seen so well too. Maybe you can put the gates and pours inside the head instead of where the face side is? Could you angle the ears or head in the mold so the ears would not be the high point?

From what I have read, you want gates where air can be trapped. And one place air gets trapped are in the high points of the mold. So maybe fiddle and see what angle is best for your piece?

To get an idea of what I did for my head silicone mold, check out my post on my blog.

    58. Holy crap, Mothi. That's a great idea O_O
I feel stupid that I never saw it that way before. Thank you so much!

And no pressure pot, right? Your castings are pretty smooth.

    59. Kitty is looking good! So you've decided to do the casting yourself?

This is kind of irrelevant right now, but a while back there was some discussion of what clothes your cat could wear. I just wanted to say that Ginny clothes should fit very well.
