First thing you do with a new doll?

Jul 28, 2013

    1. I like to try on clothes and wigs and eyes and all that. And take pictures with them around my house. Then I'll designate a spot for them in my room where they get to keep all of their stuff.

    2. After the box opening I grab the doll and dance around my room briefly with it! I like to start things off fun! :D

    3. try the wig and/or clothes on that is a must and mess with the eyes

    4. The first thing I do is check for damage (first of the doll itself, then of the face-up). I guess I'm a bit of a pessimist, but I can't relax and enjoy a doll until I know it's arrived safely :sweat

The next thing I do is sit down with my doll to create its identity kit. All my dolls have tags for inside their heads, which contain a symbol that is specific for their character. They get the same symbol attached to their cushion zipper (so I can identify dolls by their bags while searching through my stored dolls), or a label affixed to their drawer (for heads and fantasy parts). Any props or outfits specific to the character also get their own drawer at this point, labelled with the same symbol :)

    5. If I've planned right, the new doll will have clothes, a wig, eyes, and undies all ready and waiting for him/her upon arrival. After unpacking I usually fiddle with their posing, see how they stand, if the tension in their elastic is right. Then I dress them and make sure everything fits right. There have been a few occasions where clothing items didn't fit so it was a sort of back to the drawing board situation. I do my own faceups so, if the weather is right, that's the next step. Then I take lots of photos of them to celebrate their arrival.

    6. - Open the box
      - Squeal a little
      - Hold him/her and stare
      - Dress him
      - Attack him with my camera
      - Stare at him some more
      - Introduce to my dollie family
      - Take more pictures

    7. Well, as soon as I've got them out of the box I dress them up and try wigs on them. Then I introduce them to the others before I undress them again to admire the details on their pretty bodies. After that I'll just make tons of photos and share them with friends. ^^

    8. carefully scan every nook and cranny to make sure nothings broken and then--I paint that sucker!

    9. It depends how much time I have. If I have a lot of time then I take him/her apart, sand away any seams, wash, msc, body blush/ faceup, then restring. If I don't have the time though then I just restring if needed and dress her until I have time to work on her more

    10. Usually that's my routine:
      - Gather everything I have already bought for the doll (usually a wig, eyes, clothes)
      - Take camera, start documenting the box-opening (love doing that) and take my sweet time unboxing my new doll
      - Admire new doll, check for any faults/possible damage
      - Start dressing up the doll, i.e. put in eyes, put on wig and clothes
      - Play with it a bit, try to pose it, take a look at it from different angles, take more pictures
      - Afterwards put into glass cabinet/wherever it's place is in my room till I have time to make the face-up

Yeah, that's pretty much it :'D

    11. First thing is to get them a faceup as soon as possible, without that I can't decide on the eyes and wig to fit.

    12. Squeal excitedly and take 30 mins to calm myself. Take photos of the box, then the inside of the box and how everything is wrapped. Then take tons of photos when the doll no longer resembles an Egyptian mummy and all the stuff he/she came with... Then dress said doll and fawn over the said doll. "That was.... Okay... I'm leaving you alone with your doll....." As said by the witnesses of said ritual.

    13. I check every square centimeter of the doll, count fingers and toes, check for any hidden damage that might have occurred in shipping.
The best thing about getting a new doll is opening and seeing the doll 'come to life' so to speak. It's not a picture on the screen any more, it's real and has weight in my hands and it's HERE, that sort of feeling is hard to beat. But yeah, check first for any damage.

    14. I take photos to document the state of arrival (and share, if it's something a bit unusual); I then spend some time getting familiar with the doll, especially if it's one I've never owned before. I examine the details of the sculpting, play with the balance, look over the jointing, those kinds of things, to get acquainted with my new arrival. I don't deal with washing or blushing usually until later, since I don't wash them until I blush them, and blushing is dependent on weather, my schedule, and whether I have a can of sealant on hand, so it's purely an examination of the doll without any disassembly/reassembly.

    15. All but one of my kids were pre-owned so the first thing they usually get is a bath! XD When I ordered my boy, the only one I bought brand-new I just went uber excited and had the shakes so bad I almost couldn't open his box, lol! :fangirl: When I first got his box open & saw him I told him I was his mother, and had waited a long time for him! but of course I put his eyes and wig on rather quickly afterward and sent picks to my best friend!

    16. I tend to "get acquainted" with my new doll. :) This usually involves playing around with the wig and brushing it, moving the joints, and cuddling. If the doll needs clothes, then they get the clothes followed by cuddles.

    17. Put clothes and a wig on her. Bald, naked dolls creep me out. :o I don't think I'll even take pictures of the box opening other than the outside of the box and the wrapped up doll.

    18. Usually the first thing I do is look inside of the torso & look at the joints to see how the doll is designed and stung. Then I put in their default eyes (if they came with any) or put in a pair that fits.

    19. The very first thing I do with a doll after getting it out of the box is to try putting it into crazy, impossible poses. I think something like, "Let's see what this baby can do!!" and then try to get the doll to stand on one leg, to do ninja poses, to kneel, to hold another doll, to squat, several different sitting positions... and then after I'm done seeing what it can do, I finally put in the proper eyes and give it a wig.

Clothes happen... eventually, some time long after getting the doll since I am pretty slow with finding/making the right stuff..

    20. When I got mine since he was the first I just stared at him and took in the beauty that was my very first bjd! I also gave him a kiss on the forehead and then when I got my floating head I gave it a kiss on the forehead too so I guess that's my thing. I think when I get my next doll I would try to re string it and wash it since I have posing problems with my current doll so I think replacing the string they come in would change that, plus it's a little extra love they deserve.

    21. thhat is one of the best ideas I've ever heard in my entire life O.O

    22. I try to find out if he/she really is the character I invisioned him/her to be! If not... I try to really make him/her how I think he/she will look the best (and ofcourse I take a lot of pictures first!!). I just try to really make the doll my own before I can really play with him/her :)

    23. I open the package, take everything out and take box opening pictures.
After that I take them apart and wash them.
After restringing them the way I like, I try out eyes, wigs and clothes.
After that, if the doll came without a face-up or clothes, I make plans for that.

    24. I usually take box opening pics and have a mini bonding session - dressing them and changing eyes and wigs, getting familiar with their appearance and posing, and generally carrying them around with me while I chill out a bit. xD

    25. The first thing I do is clean my room and make sure that everything is tidy and ready for the new doll. Once the box is open I dress the doll, put on eyes and wigs that I like. Once I'm satisfied, I usually like to bring out all of my other dolls from storage to see how the new doll looks in the crew. Lately I've been too busy though, so I'll just open the box and set my new doll out to sit with the four or five I always have on display, but I do tend to carry around my new guy in the beginning, just to get used to having him around.

    26. Oh I try on every little pair of eyes and wig and clothes to see what suits them and then take lots of pictures of everything :D

    27. Put in the eyes and clothes first. Then i just kind of stare at it for a while, mess around with posability, stare some more and keep it near me. Until i've had it for a few days im really hesitant about doing too much because I dont want to damage it in any way (which is very irrational) but once I'm used to having it around, I'll take pictures of it and be a little less cautious. :)

    28. Put in eyes, and then try to find a wig to suit them, if I've not already bought a specific one. Then I get some pictures and they sit next to me for a few hours, whilst I pick out clothes.

    29. I'll try on different wig and eyes to see which suit best, test out how well it poses etc

    30. @Kirakukami

Oh good...I'm not the only one who cleans first...
I'm always thinking "this is the most random thing you're doing".
But actually...now that I really think about it, whenever I get something new I do this.
I have to clean and organize so that I can get the best idea of where the new doll will "live".

    31. Nowadays, it is very much like this : open the box, check the doll is fine, check the accessories are all there, check if the certificate is there, play with it to work out how it moves, get the wig/wigs to check on the colour and length it feels comfortable with, check the eyes, change the eyes if I have some spare, try the clothes if I bought some or can borrow some from my other dolls, compare with similar sized doll if I have one to compare with, compare It to the other dolls, then start hunting for the clothes, eyes, wig, shoes that fit her personality and making basic clothes.

    32. *Take photos of box opening regardless of whether I post it or not.
*Update my accounting app, my diary, and folders in my PC to prove I have the item (yes I'm a control freak of some sort).
*Try on the wig, eyes, and clothes that I've got ready for them.
*Stare at the doll to try and bond with it (might even leave it on my bed so I can cuddle it when I sleep).
      *Start worrying about his/her faceup.

    33. if i remember i would take the pictures of box opening, but i always forget it.
so my fist thing is doing the faceup

    34. Generally, the first thing I do is take pictures, whether I intend to make a box opening thread or not. Pictures are evidence. I know I sound really cynical, but if the doll is damaged I want photos with EXIF data that shows they were taken on the day the doll arrived and that the damage was noticed immediately. I then check the box to see if everything I ordered is in there and is correct, and I check it for quality. Next thing I do is carefully inspect the doll for damage. Then, i check the stringing, s-hooks, magnets, etc. I wipe off the doll or clean it if necessary. Next, I check to see if it can stand unaided. Once I'm satisfied, then I put in the eyes, dress the doll up and put on the wig. Take a first "show off" photo to share.
      Then, commence having fun. :)

    35. Very methodical, but you're right.

    36. Take pictures, sometimes I forget to take pictures as it's opened, but usually it's photographed, doll is usually wiped down regardless, clothes are found, wig is placed and doll...

Is then cuddled and doted upon.

    37. After I squeal like a little girl for about an hour, I make an outfit for them so they won't be naked. Then the wig and eyes go on, and shoes if I have any that fit. After that I carry them around my house obsessively (even to do dishes and watch tv). If they don't have a faceup, they'll get one within two weeks (I do my own). After that they're part of the family and I continue to enjoy them and work on their characters :)

    38. Not too exciting or anything...

      - Open the box and get 'em dressed!!
      - Fiddle around with different eyes and wigs
      - FREAK OUT BECAUSE OH MY GOD IT'S FINALLY HERE
      - Sit for hours trying to come up with a suitable name

      yup. That's it. lol

    39. For new dolls I usually~~

------Try on new wigs and eyes
---------Take a lot of pictures to find the perfect angles to fit their face
------------Dress them up and find the style that fits them best
---------Cuddle with it and do whatever I feel like
      ------Broadcast my new arrival

    40. I check if the doll is damaged, and if I've already got their wig, eyes and clothes I'll try them on to see if she really is fit for the character I envisioned them as. :)

    41. After carefully removing the doll from its packaging, the first thing I do is inspect the doll for damage such as cracks to the resin and also any marks/dirt, making sure there is no resin dust and if there is that has to be carefully sponged away first. I then change the eyes (if they came with any) as I like to put in my own choice of eyes.I then check out its posing capabilities before dressing the doll. When i'm satisfied with how the doll looks it's then ready for display.

    42. The first thing I do is spend some time playing with their poses, and seeing how flexible they are. I'm not an expert (or even anything close to it), but I do like knowing what poses are possible for my dolls overall. I do this at the same time I style them to see if they work with the clothing I've envisioned for them, or if I have to find something new. The most time is spent on finding the right wig with the right style, lol.

    43. I do pretty much the same as @Senya xD Play with the doll's posability, try on the clothes I have for it, and then, I make its wig. Once the wig is done, I do its face-up :)

    44. Cleaning, check for cracks or other defects, checking the flexibility of the joints... and check if they are able to stand on their own. I'm satisfied after that. UwU

    45. I check for damages and other quirks I may have not noticed on the company pictures. I then restring and clean them, if they are second hand, then I try lots of different eyes and wigs on them and then I'll pick out a outfit, dress them and take pictures! Before I even open the shipping box though, I make sure I have everything I need in close reach, so I can just enjoy the process without any distractions.

    46. Until now I've only received Dollfie Dreams, so when the girls got to me, I first checked them on any stains and if their joints are alright. Then I strenghtened their inner skeleton with CoolCat metal reinforcements.
After that I change eyes and put on a few wigs, clothes usually come later when I've got inspiration what kind would fit them.
Rest of the day I admire their nakey beauty xD

    47. After the obvious check for damage, I remove factory eyes because usually it's that icky blue putty and I worry about staining. I unstring if I'm going to be body blushing, and do face up and body blushing. I find it really difficult to get a feel for if I like a doll if it has a blank face.

    48. Try on wigs, eyes, clothes, another heads and bodies.

    49. I have my own ritual:
      - open the package
      - first photos to the nude doll
      - dress her with the clothes I chose for her
      - photos again
      - register her on my little anagraphic book

    50. Fangirl over the cute box and how amaizing the doll looks , then slowly and carefully unwrap it and then i hug it and kiss its head (i know its wierd and creepy x3)

    51. After box opening pictures and checking to make sure the doll is ok, I usually try on any clothes, wigs, and eyes I have ready to go. For my first doll it was easy, since I had a ton of barbies dresses and she came with her wig and eyes. I ended up taking a bunch of pictures of her in different outfits.

    52. The first thing I do after unboxing a doll is testing out different eyes and wigs. I usually have them picked out, but if it doesn't work I'll try different styles that I have laying around. Once I get their style, I like to take a decent photoshoot of them, then I just set them out and admire my new doll!

    53. @silverholly what an excellent idea of putting the doll and owner info inside the head! Brilliant! Maybe this is an actual thing that people do? Hahaha, either way, I will be doing that for all my dollies now :)

Anyways, the first thing I do is play with wigs and eyes and clothes until I find something we like. Then I take about 145698341464729 pictures, lol; and maybe change outfits and things some more. Then I admire them and think about a name if I haven't named them already!

      • x 1
    54. @Studio404 It's my version of Toy Story's Andy writing his name on his toys. ;)

    55. The first thing I do is open the headcap and write my name and the date I received the doll inside the headcap with a pencil. Then I take magic sponge and give it a good alcohol wash.

    56. I immediately go to make them their first outfit (if I'm not in a depressed state when they arrive that is, if that's the case I just check them over and make sure everything s alright and put them away)

    57. When I received my doll, I almost immediately tested her posability, then put on her eyes and wig, and fullset clothes.

    58. The first thing I did with both my dolls upon getting them, and what I plan to do with my incoming boy, is test their posing then take them apart. Then I dress them up and take some pics!

    59. is trying new wig and new eyes ;)

    60. Well... for my first doll I took some "unboxing" photos, and posed for our first commemorative photo together. >w<
I would've dressed him up and all if I had them now though, but I am currently waiting for his clothing, wig, and shoes to arrive.
