Wearables First sewing project!

Jan 7, 2016

    1. I hopped into the wide world of sewing things, and started with a set of two-piece PJs for my girl to have something to sit in while I did other things.

This was my first time doing something this small, and I definitely messed up several times during the creation.

      (Sorry for headless horrors...)

I'm not super happy with the collar and the inner seams are really big, which messes up the look a little bit. I think I was too nervous that it would unravel?

I also had to fix one sleeve that ended up inside out, and it's a horrible mess to cut seams in super thin stretchy material. (The sleeves ARE the same size, I think it just ended up a bit wonky when i stood her up.)

Pretty much looking for some feedback and tips on how to make things a little better for next time!

    2. Do thinner seams but overcast them :D Looks pretty good although maybe the material was a bit thin for the pants - I really love the material tho! Dayglo jogger outfits LOL or PJs - I see that's what you did say :D

    3. Come join us over in the sewing thread....

maybe post a link to this thread so folks can come check out your project.
It has been a little quiet there this week, but there are lots of nice folks who cheer one another on & are always willing to add some advice or help you brainstorm how to alter something.
Congrats on getting the pjs all put together! Inside, outside, upside down...yep. I've done all those mistakes & then some! ;)
Working with knits adds a whole other level to making the finish details tough until you've done it a couple of times. SO these will just have to be her warmup pj's. X0

    4. Teleri: Yeah, the fabric was a bit thin... I was going to use it as stockings, but there it was too thick. So jammies it is! Overcast seam would probably work better tbh but I'm not sure if my old sewing machine wants to do that.

cthulhu: On my way! It's been one heck of a journey, I have to admit that.

    5. @Draiol Did you use a zigzag stitch on the top? Knits won't unravel too badly. Using a zigzag stitch will keep the seams smoother and will also help prevent any unravelling.

    6. @Zardi I did a straight stitch first and then cut off the excess before adding a zig-zag stitch.

    7. @Draiol Use a zigzag stitch to sew the actual seam if you have a knit fabric. Using a straight stitch on stretchy fabric will quite often cause some sort of puckering or rippling on the seam, which I am seeing on the side seams of the top.

    8. @Zardi Oh,I get it! That's a great idea. I'll have to try that on my new shirt and see if it's better. Stretchy materials are such a pain to work with! XD

    9. @Draiol :D They definitely are at first. Once you get used to them, though, they are pretty forgiving. At least, I think so :) Also, if you can, use a jersey/ball-point needle when sewing knits. Ordinary sharp needles can cut the threads in a knit rather than poking between them, which can weaken the fabric.

    10. @Zardi my sewing machine is older than I am, so I'm not 100% sure I can find a needle that fits, but it's definitely something I should look up. Most of my fabrics are stretchy or knits since that's a bit more forgiving to put on.

    11. @Draiol My mom has a sewing machine from the 1970's that uses standard needles. Do you know how old your machine is?

    12. @Zardi I think it was made in 1983. I suppose I could go to a shop and ask if they have any that fits the brand, that might be the easiest.

    13. @Draiol I would think a machine that recent would use the same needles as modern machines. What brand, if you don't mind saying? Is the needle shank flat on one side?

    14. @Zardi It's a Husqvarna machine, which is a Nordic brand from here if I'm not mistaken. The needle that's in it at the moment does have a flat back, though!

    15. @Draiol You should be good to go with the standard needles, then :) Any old craft store should have tons of varieties to choose from.

    16. @Zardi Thank you so much! I'm so excited to do more things for Myra :celebrate

    17. Husquavarnas are excellent machines - they should take Schmetz needles (which come in all varieties). Ball point needles are really wonderful on knits :D

    18. Your outfit looks really nice. Have you sewn anything else?

    19. Looks great, especially for a first go. The collar looks good, don't fret so much.
I roll my seams so it is nearly impossible for them to unravel. Knit fabric is tricky though. I usually hand stitch so I don't have much advice. Sorry. :whee:

    20. For a first sewing project, I think you did admirably. :thumbup I Iike the style. Looks good paired with the sneakers. Did you create or use an existing pattern? The contrasting colour of the bodice and sleeve cuffs works well and is a good idea. (If you decide to re-make these PJs, I think the cuffs of the pants would look good in the contrasting colour too.)

You jumped in at the deep end by using thin, stretchy fabric, but I say go right ahead and work with whatever you like, make whatever you want, rise to all challenges, sew with enthusiasm and learn as you go.

I look forward to seeing more of your makes as you move along your sewing journey.

    21. Hello everyone! Thank you for the comments, it's been a while since I posted this and I definitively have improved =P
