Aesthetics First attempt on faceup

Jun 11, 2020

    1. Hello DoA! After watching some faceup time-lapses on youtube, I decided to try it on my blank doll.
      Here is the result:

I really struggle on making the line on the brows and eye-folds clean and precise. I observed that faceups from professional artists are all nice and clean. Do you have any tips for me?

I made a big mistake of spraying MSC on the doll After everything is done, there are white particles stuck on her lashes, and her eyes became so dull. I don't know if it is possible to clean it up after everything is done. Will I need to do the faceup all over again?

Appreciate your feedback very much, thank you for reading!

    2. I will only talk about the sealing for now, but you don't seal a head after eyelashes have been attached or eyes have been set in.

Generally you seal a head before painting, then several times during the paint job (for example after blushing the face, after putting down the eyebrow base with pastels, after the first round of details, after the second round of details), and then one last time when you're all done painting.

Afterwards you gloss, usually lips and inner part of the eyes and tearducts, and then apply lashes if desired.
Once the glue on the lashes is dried you can put in the eyes and put the head back on the body.
There is no sealant sprayed on during these steps, and certainly not once the eyes are set in!

The eyes are dull because of the sealant now. When they are made of glass you can try using rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) and a q-tip to remove it. Other materials you better test on the back of the eye first in case the material reacts badly to the alcohol.

The lashes are unfortunately ruined and cannot be salvaged. When you decide to clean the head and try again you will have to use new lashes.

    3. If you could, please retake some photos with frontal lighting so there is no shadow on her face, it's a little difficult to see details! I think something that will help with getting clean and precise lines is to paint the lines (with a very very small brush) instead of using a pencil, as it's hard to not get a dull line with varying opacities when using pencil. Aside from that, she looks really great! And like Ara said, make sure that you're sealing regularly and at the correct times! I'm excited to see you progress :)

    4. My personal favourite equipment is my games workshop citadel tools. I paint 28mm models for a living so I consider this a head start learning my brush skills, I'd recommend trying your hand at a few models at that scale to get used to painting small :)

    5. Taking the eyes out and cleaning them should make them bright again. If they are glass 100% acetone can be a pretty easy clean up. Try working with different size of brush? I know some people do better with long bristles and some with short bristles. Maybe try to see which one works better for you.:3nodding:

    6. I see that several others are suggesting you try using a brush to get clean, even lines. If you do not have a brush available, or do not wish to use a brush, keeping your watercolor pencil sharp and wet can help to make cleaner, more even lines. Just make sure it is not too wet, or the excess water can spread on the faceup and blur the details.
