Finding the corret size for animatic eyes?

Jun 12, 2023

    1. I recently acquired a Shoushou Doll Niko by random chance, and she is my first anime style doll. The eyes she came with were far, far too small (giving her a permanently horrified expression :o) and I'm looking to replace them, but I have no idea what size would fit, and the eye sizing tutorials I've found so far are for standard, round-iris eyes. Her eye openings are about 15mm across and 11mm top to bottom.

Also, what animatic eye sellers would you recommend?

    2. If you can measure the inside of the eyewells to determine the largest size they can accomodate you can possibly go from there.
It also, with anime eyes, can really depend on size/shape of the design of the iris as well as the eyeball size.
Do you mind showing a picture of this horrified doll? :whee:it might help a bit too

    3. When I bought some anime eyes for one of my dolls the seller had a this note with the listing:

And the sizing seems to work the best for me. So while my 1/4 dolls normally wear 14mm eyes with anime eyes they'll need 16mm. No idea what size Niko wears but try going size up when using anime eyes from the ones she came with. :)

    4. @AlisonVonderland A picture from last night with the old eyes still in, and from this morning without.

@digi Thanks! That seems really useful!

    5. Ah, see they are also the round style and not even an anime eye. So I'm sure it will make a big difference to get anime eyes.

    6. Oh, definitely. I've seen people use round style eyes in anime style dolls before, but only to deliberately get the kind of creepy effect :sweat

    7. Yeah it's not my thing... I don't even like the anime eyes that happen to be round. There were enough old Volks models with them. It's from a certain era of Shojo but I didn't think it translated well on most sculpts.
Anyway good luck! Congratulations on your new cutie!

    8. I don't have much to offer regarding animetic eye sizes, but I know of a few shops that do carry those eyes that you could check out.

Legend Doll has a selection of animetic eyes under their general eyes section (you might have to dig through the catalog, as they're not organized in their own separate sub-section). Luts also offers a selection of anime eyes. Then there is, of course, the penultimate shop for anime-esque bjds (and their vinyl counterparts): Volks USA Store.

Not sure how helpful this advice will be, but maybe try measuring for the preferable iris size by measuring the desired size you want in the eye well horizontally, and try searching for iris size based on those measurements. Hopefully that's useful in some way?

Either way—best of luck with searching for what you're looking for:kitty1

    9. As opposed to round eyes, Animetic eyes are usually taller on one end. That helps prevent the creepy eye look of round eyes. If you want to use round eyes you have to go up at least two sizes in the case of wide eyes, but the roundness of the eye can sometimes cause gaps or a bulging effect. So round eyes are really only suitable if the anime doll does not have her eyes widely open.

There is usually some wiggle room when it comes to the Animetic eye size. Sizing up or down will take up less horizontal space in the eyes. For example my DD is recommended 20mm eyes, but I wear 18mm eyes on her, and they still fit top to bottom. If you know which eyes she wears now, the same size in Animetic eyes should work out fine, but if you want to be safe, pick a size up. Animetic eyes are generally flat domes so the curvature of the eye is less of a concern as with round eyes.

I don't have a Niko but I have read that her ideal eye size was 22mm.

    10. @jade-eyed-cat I had considered Volks, I'll have to check out the other two, thanks!

@Novalyna That is definitely helpful info, thanks!

    11. There are a number of shops on Etsy that sell anime eyes, such as AlrunasAesthetics (I've heard great things about them and have a large selection of styles, but haven't bought from them before yet.) and Tenshi266Studio (I've bought from them before. The quality is great and the seller is great to work with.).

I also really like ivoryteal. I've bought from them before and once again great quality and great to work with. But they've been on hiatus for a long while now ...

    12. I have other Shoushou dolls and I usually use 18mm-22mm for them. They have the mosey space for designs and they have the perfect anime big eye look!

Thank you to everyone! I got some eyes from Tenshi266Studio, and couldn't be happier with them.

    14. Indeed she’s much better with those! With the first ones she was a bit scary, now she is very very pretty! You did an amazing choice :love
