Hello guys! Anyone else here like fashion dolls? Any pictures? So, I know about Integrity, Barbie and Mizi Dolls. Love the silkstone and vintage fashions. I don't believe I've seen anything similar in BJD clothes? It's definitely something I'd love to see in BJDs. Well... there's something really alluring about the glamour of those dolls. I haven't seen many BJDs with similar dimensions, especially in tiny size. I think something really appealing about them is the clothes that are made and consistently released in their size. BJD clothes and fashion doll clothing definitely has a quality difference though, even including Silkstone fashions, but then again there's more diversity in style. And for anyone that likes BJDs the body sculpts can be less attractive comparatively, right?
Check out the 1/6 mature dolls thread for BJDs that are more like Barbie. There are loads of them these days! Slim MSDs are also often considered fashion dolls, like Iplehouse F.I.D, Dollshe’s fashion line, and Popovy!
Normally fashion dolls don't interest me much, but I've recently fallen for one that was released by PIPOS. Cue me talking about it non-stop for over a month, and my fiance finally decided to buy me one. Here is my PIPOS Ohoo in a cute little Momoko outfit I found on Etsy: I think there is a certain charm to some fashion dolls that you just can't find in BJDs, and believe me, I adore BJDs.
I don't like fashion dolls as much as I like BJDs but I really like Barbie for the price she is, especially the fully jointed ones (which I have a small collection of) or cute ones I find at thrift stores. Recently I got my first silkstone Barbie at Goodwill and I absolutely love her. (I made her this cool dress too) I do follow a lot of photographers of fashion dolls (Barbie and others) on Flickr though, because I love looking at them.
I love to repaint fashion dolls. It's what really got me into the doll hobby as a whole in the first place. I've never done a barbie repaint I've cared for though. Their heads are just so teeny that I need more practice.
I have a fairly large collection of fashion dolls, but only articulated 16", like Tonners and Integrity. This is one of my OOAK Ellowynes. She is a repaint by Sands of Fire Love this 16" Poppy repaint by Lisa Mills Tonner Glindas, one repaint and one factory
Livdollcity - I love all of your dolls. The eyes on the Ellowyne repaint are beautiful. And Poppy looks very sophisticated. But your two Tonner dolls I really love. I love the hair on the original version and her factory paint job is one of my favorites, but the lips on the repaint and I like what her hair looks like down.
Thanks so much! I started collecting 16" dolls like Ellowyne and then discovered msds. They all go well together, which is important to me because I love making doll families and pose them for scenes. At first all my dolls went together in scale, then a group of SDs moved in lol.
I still have quite a large collection of fashion dolls of all sizes, as I collected them before I started with the BJD's. I also LOVE the Barbie Made to Move body, and have rebodied some of my favorite Barbie faces on those bodies, as they are inexpensive when I want a quick dolly fix of something new. Wow JinClncy! Lovely photos of your Made-to-Move Barbies. I also love the Made-to-Move Barbie bodies. I couldn't help noticing the Ken in the second photo appears to have an articulated body. I believe he was originally on a non-articulated Fashionista body. Right? That is so cool that you swapped heads. Can I ask how you managed to do that? Was it hard? I would love to swap heads on a couple of Ken dolls I own, but I'm afraid to break the neck. Any advice would be appreciated.
For swapping Ken heads you can use heat to soften the head a bit. Then you gently take it off. A lot of the tips used for Monster High customization will work on any Mattel doll. I use hot water, a mug heated 60-90 seconds in the microwave, dunk the head and neck in for awhile then test to see if it comes off easy. If he's rooted it might take off any product in his hair and loosen the glue inside.
Thanks @Rabbit-moon ! That particular Ken had the swivel neck joint like Barbie has, so I did the head swap just like I do Barbie. I use my blow dryer on a low setting to heat up the head/neck area, then pop the head off and on another articulated Barbie. I've never swapped out one of the Ken's with the older neck joint that is more twist instead of swivel, I that makes sense.
Thanks so much for the info DollyKim and JinClncy! . Thanks for the warning about rooted-hair heads, DollyKim. Melting glue inside the head would be bad. And, thanks JinClncy for the advise concerning a swivel-head and a head that only turns from side-to-side. That is definitely something I need to take into consideration if Im planning to behead some poor Ken doll. Thanks again! This really helped.
To my experience glue head has been more of a recent thing, and especially with Monsters and rerooting them. Baby/talcum powder or blue Dawn dish soap can help combat it. If I remember correctly older Kens have male neck plugs and need a bit of surgery to do a swap to a newer body. I've seen it done on another forum.
Hi doll friends! I've been getting more and more interested in fashion dolls recently (the crazier ones like Monster High, Nova Stars, LOL, Ever After High, very stylized dolls), and have had a tough time finding a forum for *other* types of dolls. Does anyone know of a forum like DoA for other dolls? The only one I've found is for ~adult~ dolls. I just want to be able to keep up with the market and new dolls that are always coming out. Maybe someone out there has a neat blog? I've found plenty of barbie and barbie-adjacent fashion doll blogs, but I haven't found anyone focusing on the weird and wacky ones!
There’s a forum called Dollieh Sanctuary that allows dolls that would otherwise be off topic or banned for DOA (no recasts allowed though). It’s pretty small compared to here but we’re a friendly bunch. Lots of fashion doll fans! Dollieh Sanctuary • Index page
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has their bjd hobby spill over into other collectibles! I started with BJDs but also take the occasional detour to Hot Toys, but right now I'm interested in Barbie Silkstone because I love the vintage style. Does anyone know where I can get more of this vintage style? I'm tempted to buy a Silkstone to see of the outfits will fit my 1/6 dolls... Are they still made or are the only available second hand at this point?
From what I understand Silkstone are not goin to be made anymore. I might be wrong however, I love Barbie, but I'm not a historian or a well versed Barbie collector. I believe it was Azuza Barbie on YouTube where I heard that Silkstone are done. They are going to be making a different collector doll. However, you can find some overstock at Tuesday Morning sometimes, brand new if you have one around. My mom got one for me in either 2019 or 2020. I am not a fan of the faces so I don't normally collect Silkstone, but I have to say I like the one I got much better in person (not as unamused as it come across in photos). Hope that helps. (:
Wow! I didn't know Mattel was not making anymore Silkstones. I have a few old Silkstones, and I always liked the quality of the material they used to make those dolls. I really like their retro style!
You're the best Enzyme! I was afraid they were discontinued but wasn't sure where to look, I will be keeping an eye open now that I know. Just one more excuse to go treasure hunting at thrift stores I'm glad to hear you like yours more in person!
@ArouraAnn, I don't follow Barbie news, or social medias but I do watch a lot of doll stuff on YouTube. Here's the video where Azuza talks about it. It seems like they are making Silkstone, but not the old head sculpt, and they are calling it the "Pink Collection" now, if anyone else is interested. Azuza is kind of an encyclopedia on Barbie, she's like a living Barbie doll herself (I also watch a lot of Asian toy/doll customizers and clay artists, I think that's how YouTube suggested her Japanese channel to me). (:
i picked up the Barbie MADE TO MOVE Redhead (forget her name, but love Redheads) and the most recent (at the time) Barbie Astronaut set for cheap back around 2017 or so, just to get a feel for what modern Barbie was like. Nahh, she didn't really cut it in the end. nothing less than choice favorite Anime characters, -blessed with the superlative OBITSU 26cm. aftermarket body- will seem to do at all for me these days...
I love the Made to Move Barbies, and the new Barbie Looks collection is stunning. I've already ordered the curvy girl with the Afro, but I have to wait until late August for her I also really want the petite girl with the short hair, but she sold out FAST.
Totally. I managed to grab the curvy Barbie Looks doll and the platinum blonde one by checking Amazon multiple times a day. I own a couple of the older Barbie Basics (2009-ish?), and I love this line so much more. The nose sculpt was particularly striking to me. They have proper noses! Really detailed! I will say that the platinum haired Barbie seems a little thin on the volume of hair, but that could also be due to the color. I'm probably going to end up shoving a few more strands into some of the plugs.
Agreed! I really like the made-to-move Barbies, too! (I wish Barbie had had this kind of articulation when I was a kid.) The new Barbie Signature Looks line is definitely coming to my house! I love it! It's modern looking, but still kind of retro, which I really like. I was able to get the tall 60s Mod-looking blond, and the curvy afro brunette. They are both stunning girls. Both of the new boys look handsome, too. I hope to get the whole line, but they have been hard to find. I hope when they do a second line of these dolls, they do a redhead!
So - anyone into Barbie-adjacent fashion dolls? Licca-chan, Momoko, Mimi World? They have become my new obsession. I managed to snap up a Mimi World Barista set (South Korean fashion doll - why Barbie/Mattel apparently never made huge inroads in South Korea), and the quality. Dies. Worth every penny. Probably one of three dolls I haven't unboxed. The interior is so gorgeous, I want a proper diorama set up so I can preserve as much of the box as possible. (eBay link: [Mimi World] 17 Mimi is a barista at Albajung Cafe | eBay) I also grabbed a clearance Momoko doll from AmiAmi that i'm waiting on (link to Momoko dolls: DOLL LINE UP | momokoドール公式サイト - momokoDOLL.com), and I have my first proper 27 cm Obitsu body with an S Gretel head (Parabox link: [PARABOX Online shop]). I'm just loving the quality and variation, and now I want MOAR! ALL THE FASHION DOLLS! I have one Integrity Toys doll, and she's surprisingly top heavy? She came with her own stand, but it's as though her waist isn't strong enough to hold her upper torso upright? She's constantly leaning/toppling over.
Thanks for the links, MaleficentMrsofEvil! I love seeing other fashion dolls. I always wanted a Momoko, but my doll money was always tied-up in BJDs, or 16-inch fashion dolls. (I wish the Momoko site showed currency conversion.)
