Fairyland Fantasy Art Line (Part 1)

Aug 3, 2016

    1. I think it's because they want to hide those holes (like the ones that are in the first version of the claws) :)

    2. @Akara Ahhh, that makes a lot of sense! I suppose they didn't have any way to hide it with the claws and hooves!

I wonder if they're going to stick with bird-like creatures. It's a bit cliche but I'd really like to see a full pony based creature, like a unicorn or pegasus. They've already made one-half of one and they could reuse the Ruca body for a lion too!

    3. I really hope we get to see a pony of some sort, and I actually think we will considering we got a fairyline centaur :)

I would assume they are working on one and possibly the mane would be the issue on a pony head. Like figuring out how they should do it ~

    4. I want them to do a little dragon. A pega-pony would be adorable too, though. XD

      • x 1
    5. Seconding a dragon! Also, probably less likely, but I'd love to see FL's take on a chimera.

    6. A ceberus would be cool. A little bit more complicated, but it is the name of FL's sculptors. They might just think about the idea, lol.

    7. I may be the only one who ordered Ruca with talons in front....

[IMG]Stormwing and Moondancer by Beth Simmons, on Flickr

I think her name will be Moondancer, in honor of yesterday's eclipse I didn't pick her up until today, but she arrived on Aug. 21st, I don't remember how tightly strung Stormwing was when he arrived; but her stringing does seem quite snug. She poses beautifully, though.

It's so humid here that it's almost impossible to breathe, much less spray sealant, so any painting will have to wait until the weekend. And now we have severe storm warnings one after the other and heading this way....

    8. Aaaah a dragon would be really cool and a ceberus too! *w*

And congratulations @LadyMadrigal on the arrival! Nice to see another pink one! :)

Lana was just sleeping today, all day!

    9. So do I, and I deeply regret not getting Ruca.

    10. @MayBea, keep an eye on Denver Doll Emporium's facebook page especially in the next month or so. Sometimes people don't finish their layaways, so the dolls go back for sale. Last year DDE had quite a few Ruses available after the ordering period was over, so I think something similar will happen with Ruca.

      Awww Lana!!!! <3 <3 <3 I wish I could sleep all day! :T

    11.
    12. I got my Rus from DDE after the ordering period was over -I would bet they'll have Ruca available, too.

      • x 1
    13. That is some good news. I think that a Rus head with Ruca's body would be the cutest griffin ever, a perfect creature.

    14. I love those lions pows !!! Look amazing!!! I

    15. My girl arrived from DDE sooner than I expected!

I'd planned a blue and grey color scheme for her, but after looking at her for a while, I think my plans are going to have to change. I'm thinking something iridescent, maybe? She's just so cheerful, I can't use the plan I already had for her. xD

She is entirely capable of standing on her forepaws unassisted.

I may end up making her some magnetic ears. What a total sweetie. I'm blown away by this doll.

    16. @MayBea: DDE DDE has some fullsets listed now!

Did anyone ever buy Ruca or Rus as basic dolls? I've only ever seen fullsets.:?

@redsixwing I can't wait to see what you do with your girl. The posing on these guys is amazing.

    17. I wanted the wings, so a fullset it is :D

Was talking with SixSpouse about what to do with her, and gyrfalcon coloration came up. The idea's sort of stuck in my head - I may have to do that!

    18. I think that's just if you don't want the wings...and most people want the wings with their art line so most people buy the fullsets ^w^

Lana got some more time outside last week! :D

    19. I got my Rus as a fullest.
Thanks for the heads-up, taixonay! I checked last night, and may purchase the white one on DDE's lay-away plan.

    20. I know most people get the fullset for the wings, but I was wondering if anyone had bought the basic doll. Even without wings Ruca and Rus are really cute and the basic option is a bit more affordable.

I got fullsets for both releases but I usually play and pose Cookie without her wings. Depending on what the next fantasy creature is for next year I might skip the fullset and just get the basic, especially if the wings are still compatible. (That'll also be one less thing to paint:sigh)

      @redsixwing That's an awesome idea!

    21. Oh, I could cry! I went to DDE to get the white Ruca with the lion paws, and she was gone!

    22. @redsixwing Oooh that's a cool pattern! I bet it would be lovely on a Ruca!

@taixonay I honestly don't think I'll use wings on Lana from now on. I'm thinking of cleaning the blushing off them and use them for one of my littlefees instead :D

I'm getting a centaur, like the fairyline sized one, and I opted to not get wings with it because I didn't use wings on Lana that often. I like the looks of the wings, they're really super pretty but eh, in photos I sometimes feel like they cover too much of the body or they are so widly spread that the rest of the image just loose focus because the wings take up half of the photo :sweat

      @MayBea Oh no! :<

    23. @Akara I think the wings work really well for dynamic poses and you can do some creative stuff with them. I agree with you though, they do take up a lot of space and a lot of times take away from the doll if you're going for something simpler in the photo.

    24. Yeah I agree @taixonay , for special shots I'll definitley use wings on Lana, but for the most part she's going to be wing-less for sure ^w^ The wings are really pretty though, and I have to say I was surprised to see that the wings were so different between Ruca and Rus. It's nice to see, but I wasn't expecting it :)

    25. I never looked closely enough to notice they were different! (I only have Rus, though I do love Ruca's little lion feet.) Now I'll have to take closer looks at their photos...

    26. I thought I would share a photo of my griffin. New eyes are definitely needed but otherwise I'm pretty happy with how he turned out.

    27. @scripple, he's really cute. Does he have a name yet?

    28. @taixonay Thanks. No he doesn't have a name yet as I'm terrible with names. He'll get one eventually though.

Here's another photo with a less dynamic pose but shows his colors a bit better. This was my first time blushing a doll.

    29. he looks great! I love his eye liner and the shading on his toes

    30. Thank you. I wanted to bring in some actual eagle like colors in the beak and talons.

    31. Oh, how cute! The eyeliner looks really good, and I like the contrasty talons.

Edit: has anyone unstrung one of these lovelies yet? I want to take mine apart for painting, but am nervous about it.

    32. @redsixwing thanks on the eyeliner and talons.

I partially unstrung mine, just the three pieces that make up the neck. I added kips to improve the ability to hold more poses as I felt the neck was the weakest part in that regard. The stringing is a bit unusual (in my limited experience) but not too bad as long as you use a ribbon to pull the elastic through where it needs to be.

I considered undoing the legs but they were tight enough to be too annoying to bother and honestly if I had painted any of the areas exposed by unstringing it that paint would likely just chip off. Already there is chipping of the areas I could get to with it strung.

    33. @scripple thanks - I'll try to find some kips for mine as well, I wish her neck could hold more of the positions it can reach. ^^

Hm. Good point; this is my second doll and my other one was pretty easy to string and unstring. He's also not tight enough to cause chipping in his joints. I'll think more about this.

    34. My griffin arrived on Friday. I haven't played much with her because we had to get ready for a long hike yesterday. I did manage to switch the heads (although the griffin head was really hard to remove). I'm hoping to do more with my two birds before I go to bed tonight, but I'm still really sore from the hike. XP

Still not sure how I want to paint the griffin body and Cookie is blank right now too. Lots of painting to plan out. >.<

    35. He is gorgeous :) I badly want one :)

Here's Cookie on the griffin body!

20171002_095528 and here's a pic of Ruca on the hippogriff body. (I don't have a name for her yet)

I've been having a hard time getting the griffin body to do bucking and full rearing up poses. The griffin head has been *really* difficult to pull off. It fits really tight on the body. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

I like both bodies a lot. They each have pros and cons but they're both really cute.

    37. @Donna80 Thank you. Good luck on your hunt.

@taixonay If you mean the faceplate / very top of the head it's pretty hard to pull off for me, but I have no other fairyland dolls to compare against to say if it is unusually tight. I'd say it's tight enough that it makes me feel like I'm going to snap off a resin feather edge when taking it off though.

Rearing poses are tricky on mine because the lion paws want to pop to some other position. I found it easiest to hold the front of the lion paws down with two fingers from one hand while using the other hand to move the body to the right angle. This gave me the best success with the paws staying where they needed to stay.

    38. @scripple the hippogriff body is easier to pose in those positions. Like others have said FL strung them looser than the griffins. I can get it to buck and rear almost effortlessly. Although the griffin body is better at sitting/lying down poses. Also Cookie's faceplate (Rus) is easy to remove from both bodies without issue so I wonder why Ruca's faceplate is so tight. I was worried I was going to break off the feathers too while trying to remove it.

    39. i'm not sure why they would have made the new faceplate so much tighter. Fortunately I don't plan on swapping mine.

I got some better eyes. Here's a quick photo showing them off along with his friend.

    42. @taixonay Oh, they're soooo cuuuute. I really love them both in tan.

    43. @brightberry, @MayaWolf , and @redsixwing thanks for the compliments! They're a fun bunch to play with.

I'm toying with the idea of making a posing comparison for the two bodies. Would anyone be interested in that?

    44. I finished coloring my Griffon today

    45. Wow, Xiaoli. Looks wonderful!

    46. @taixonay I'd love to see that!

@Xiaoli he's so cute! I like the red shading on him.

    47. I wouldn't have thought to shade with red...turned out fantastic!

    48. @Xiaoli, the red blushing looks great on Rupert. I also really love his eyes! I was thinking about using some red on Latte too, but not sure where just yet.

I've taken a bunch of pictures of Latte and Cookie together to compare their posing, but am a bit hesitant to post most of them because the background is so cluttered with other doll stuff.

    49. There hasn't been any Lana photos in a while so here you go! >w<

Rus and Ruca Trade - Order arrival
      by Akara, on Flickr

Just last week I think it was, I decided to try to sculpt a new faceplate for the body just for fun. It looks like a very cartoony lioness or a hyena, it goes well with the body that has paws. I hope FL makes something like that in the future. I like both the Rus and the Ruca head, but I'm not the biggest fan of birds so I'd love to see something else from them! The art line has so much potential!

I sculpted the faceplate just for fun, but it did turn out very cute. I'm pondering whether or not to show Fairyland once I'm finished...but I'm leaning towards showing them because I think a head like that would definitely be something they could sell with the body that has the paws(and honestly I think they could benefit from some new inspiration x) ). I just want to make sure they know I just did it for fun and I would never sell it, which makes me a bit nervous about showing them. I just don't want them to get the wrong idea! >.<

      • x 2
    50. @Akara, you should definitely show them when you're finished. When you show them, you can tell them that you made the faceplate just for fun and that you would love to see more diversity with the fantasy art line dolls they create in the future. I hope you'll share your faceplate with the rest of us as well. :3

    51. @taixonay Yeah, I'm definitely going to show them and explain everything. The doll would be considered off topic, so I can't show it here on its own but I'll likely have photos up on my Flickr later ~ Just need to finish it...haha...! :sweat It needs more floof!

And time for more spam! Lana butt this time! >w< (and paw! Eeeee!)

      Oooh so many cute griffs!

    56. Awww! @CathyM your griffin looks so cute playing (hiding?) in the snow!

@Zodiac I love the colors on your griff!

Can we have some more spam in the thread? My birbs are still in storage and can't be taken out until we get to the new place. I haven't played with my dolls since December.:(

    57. How about the hippogriff and the new RealFee centaur:
[IMG]Sleipnir and Thule by spih_2, on Flickr

I have been switching eyes around a bit and should take a picture of June/hippogriff centaur and the new Luna centaur together, but it is already too dark today.

    58. Oh wow, they look gorgeous together!

    59. I recently got back into collecting Fairyland BJD's after a few years of Lati Yellows and Volks DD's. I really, really want a Hippogriff and hope/pray to find one here on the Marketplace. Does anyone here think that Fairyland will be releasing anything new in the Fantasy Art collection?
