Elfdoll Rainy (Large) Discussion Part 4

Mar 25, 2019

    1. Should be a fun project! I've heard that K was modeled after Christian Bale. I don't know if that's true, but there is a resemblance!

      • x 2
    2. Out of curiosity, has anyone tried matching the Homme skin with parts from a company that does resin matching, and was it successful? I'm thinking that if the specific head I'm eyeing offsite turns out to be that color resin, it might work to send Resinsoul (assuming a body they had would fit my purposes; this is just a hypothetical right now) a Pantone swatch/paint chip that matches the head once I could see it in person. I'll be looking into the accuracy of resin matching in general with this method, but at least it's a start.

I'm kinda hoping the head I'm saving for is just a NS type resin since that's apparently much easier to match, but I figure I should cover my bases.

I really appreciate the support btw, saving up makes it hard to be patient but even if the one I'm looking at sells before I can get it, I'm hoping that a K head will be possible to find eventually... though the one I'm saving up for really does have a faceup perfect for what I'll need. So I guess we'll see.

    3. Ah, the holy grail search for an Homme skin match. The only pre-existing match I've ever found is IslandDoll "island" color, but I didn't like any of the bodies. I hope you can find something good!

    4. Since this was a resin match problem from so many years ago I wonder if anyone ever tried doll zone (or eventually doll chateau) normal yellow for homme skin? I never saw homme in person but I saw those and they were very comparably dark and impossible to match to anything else I ever saw.

      • x 1
    5. There are some light tans (Soom Tawny was not too bad) but they all seemed to be oranger than Homme, which was sort of a cool peachy color. I do have a Wu head on an old Granado Sunshine body, but it only works because both have yellowed/faded a lot.

Edit to add: This might be kind of useless information, but Elfdoll Homme is not so far off Elfdoll Real Skin, and there were a few Real Skin almost-matches, Impldoll old real skin, Angell-Studio suntanned. I'm not sure if this is helpful or not. :sweat

    6. Not to derail the resin match conversation, but I was just excited to have my Ruru come together :D

    9. You are very welcome!! :D

Ngl I'm thinking of buying the body the head I'm looking at comes with, rather than just the head, and giving myself a crash course on mtf modding... either way it would be a project, whether that means searching and searching for a match vs more serious additive/subtractive in some cases moddifications, and I did want to learn to mod BJDs at some point... but I don't know if this is even more of a fool's errand. This doll would be a project regardless, and I doubt since apparently homme parts are hard to sell, that it would be that much of a discount just getting the head split without the body anyway. So I'm still thinking about it since I gotta save anyway, here's hoping it's still for sale when I have the funds for it.

    11. Great photo @Arengil :love

I hope to have time/ energy/ cooler weather to take some nice new pics of my Lydia soon (well, in a month or two).

    12. So I finally managed to get Lydia after…. Lordy 19 years. The problem is the seller didn’t disclose that her elastic is totally shot. Couldn’t tell from the listing pictures at all, but she’s the most stretched out doll I’ve ever seen. :( Where can I get the right elastic to restring her? And a guide on how to do it for Elfdolls? Until I can get her restrung, she’s stuck staying in her box for now.

    13. @AlisonVonderland Thank you! <3
I hope to see your Lydia soon. :)

      @WinterSong
I don't know if haberdashery works in your country, but that's where I shop this.

    14. My Wu from 2006 is on Souldoll double body now, but it’s the special ‘oriental’ tone that was packaged with souldoll’s limited Lee Junki doll, so that's probably not helpful for anybody. They are an exact match and always have been. I always wondered if they were perhaps cast by the same third party company as they were made close together.

    15. Well I finally got the elastic ordered and the hook tool for restringing…

The other dilemma is something the seller didn’t disclose at all. When I got Lydia and opened the box there was a weird smell. On everything. Finally realized… The entire inside of the box and Lydia smelled like cigarette smoke. I removed every single bit of the black packing foam she came in cause it was totally saturated with the smell and had dark streaks visible on the top piece of it. Lined the box with Free and Clear dryer sheets, and hoping it was the foam making everything smell.

As far as her face-up the seller said in the description that it was factory face-up, but I am confused about something. I know there was the bold makeup version with the wavy wig, and the more natural face with the straight hair, but did either one of those face-ups have freckles???? I assumed she was just the more natural face-up, but for the life of me I don’t remember there being freckles on her face for it.

      • x 5
    16. @WinterSong I'm sorry your Lydia arrived in bad condition. To remove the odor, I recommend cold water and leaving the doll in a clean refrigerator for a few days. (It's brutal, I know.)
It may not help completely, but it should reduce the smell a little...

    17. Hello all, I am returning to say hi and hope everyone is well and enjoying their Elfdolls. They're not the best quality but here's a couple of pics of my Elfdoll Hazy hybrid boy in his final finished form. I love him so much!

    18. He's very handsome @ArcaneDesires ! Congrats on getting him put together to your satisfaction! I love it when that happens

    19. Hazy has a great sculpt! Thanks for posting him.

I have just revisited the thread and discovered lovely pics that I hadn't seen so must have been missing notifications for Elfdoll posts.

It makes me want to take new photos and find body matches for my Rainy heads :)

    20. Awww thanks all! <3 I am so so happy to finally have him looking how I always imagined him when I first made up his character so many years before I even knew these dolls existed.

His old shell was the doll I loved to photograph the most, and looking at him finally finished, I think this version is gonna end up that way too.

Hazy is such a gorgeous sculpt and it lends itself so well to strong faced girls or slightly softer faced boys. Such a great sculpt. I need to get my Vivien a body and a faceup asap, so I can show off all four of my Elfdoll babes. It's lovely to come back and see these beautiful dolls that I've missed while I vanished.

      • x 7
    21. Your Hazy looks awesome!! I'm really growing to appreciate Elfdoll sculpts more, initially I was only interested in a specific K with a specific faceup (because of how it would work well as a mini-me- literally has my face structure, and the expression one of my sonas usually has, lucky find!!) but after looking for other pictures of the sculpt and other Elfdolls in general, I have to say that I really like their style in general, it's a shame they aren't made anymore.

My K (I just paid off the layaway yesterday, woohoo!) will have her body modded from the original "boy" body to a more afab look, I'm looking forward to the project knowing that it may not come out perfect but will be a good learning experience if nothing else. I want to learn to do more adventurous customizations for my dolls, and I figured since hybrids for this resin can be... difficult, I might as well see what I can do with the body she comes with. Don't worry, the K headsculpt will remain as is! It's interesting how a sculpt I've seen described as very masculine in other threads about it (found a bunch of ancient history looking for hybrid tips!!) ends up being the perfect look for me.

      • x 3
    22. My Elfdoll K arrived this morning and I am very happy with her, unfortunately the body proportions themselves are more obviously masculine than I'd expected and will take a LOT of work to make into my vision... and the body despite being single jointed is VERY sturdy and stable as a poser, I'm almost reluctant to modify it just because of that. For an older doll it feels very high quality. For now I'll focus on getting a proper wig and eyes for the character, as well as magnets for the headcap as the seller forgot to tell me they were missing (no hard feelings, though, I'm still happy with the doll) .

    24. I'm here to do a little revival. It was exciting when several people were posting here again recently. Any of your Elfdolls been up to new adventures?

I bought a new outfit secondhand which I am really excited about for Omega, and another black wig actually. The way things go this reminded me of some of my ongoing excitement about her. I also stumbled into a Pinterest board with fashions that reminded me the style I really wanted for her when I got her back and wanted to start designing her wardrobe a couple years ago. We're waiting on the wig and outfit to arrive but I made her some new clothes I like yesterday and restyled this Monique Ginger wig of hers (tightened the waves) then tried to get started on the project of end of year/holiday portraits for the whole doll family... I'm not sure if I can do it and I only got one salvageable pic today fiddling with my DSLR but here it is anyway!

    25. Omega is always so lovely!
I'm currently working on a Hazy (girl) and also bought a smiling Soah (third head for Walentyn, my soah). No pic yet!

      • x 3
    26. @AlisonVonderland Your Omega is so beautiful and the wig is just perfect for her! <3

      • x 1
    27. Thank you @Arengil !
Thank you too, @Follow-the-Wind it's exciting that you have more Soah now. Smiling soah was one of my favorite rainy sculpts. I hope your Hazy will turn out well too!
Please forgive me for not remembering the answer, have you done photos in the past of multiple elfdolls together? It's so cool when people have a small collection from one company like that, unlike me. I usually have just one.... (Well I guess I have three switch heads... Unfortunately I'm so bad at trying to take complicated doll photos!)

      • x 2
    28. @AlisonVonderland You're welcome! Mmm no I think I never took multiple Elfdolls in picture together. That's an idea, I should try! But who I have left? Soah, Hazy, Vivien (not in the same universe) and Euna? I think that's all. I sold Sian and Yuan some years ago.

      • x 4
    29. I love what you have done to the Ginger wig. Your girl looks lovely. I don't have new Elfdoll photos to share but that reminds me that I do have a Eun-A face to paint. It's coming up to summer holiday time here and I thought I had no new faces to paint so maybe finally Eun-A will get a face.

      • x 6
    30. Omega is beautiful!

I've been trying to organize and sort my doll stuff, and it's reminded me of how much I love the Elfdolls. A group holiday photo sounds like a great idea, but I don't know if I'll get that far. :sweat

    31. I’m enjoying the Elfdoll love. @AlisonVonderland, love Omega’s look. Her photo almost looks like she’s in a spaceship, particularly whatever is going on behind her right side.
@Follow-the-Wind - seconding photos of your Soahs .
This convo reminds me to work Lucy, my Smiling Soah’s outfit. I wish I could work on her this weekend but I have a work trip on Sunday. It looks like Lucy goes in the work on her real soon pile.

    33. In progress picture. Here is the faceup for Yanli, my Hazy:

Currently I'm making her wigcap. She will be blindfolded, so she has no eyes (and I could have let her eyes unpainted but well...)

    34. @Follow-the-Wind Yanli’s faceup looks great. I love the skin texture you achieve.

This thread got me to thinking about Lucy, my Smiling Soah. I designed an outfit for her and had time this morning to go through my clothes and put together what I’d call a draft outfit and took some pics. Here’s a teaser of Lucy’s style.

    35. @Follow-the-Wind your photos tend to be very immersive so maybe if they aren't in the same universe it's not feasible, but desk snapshots are cool too. It's great that you still have the four elfdolls even if not all the ones you had. I think four is a big group from one company!

Your Yanli looks beautiful :aheartbea she remains so fresh and beautiful for a character who seems also somewhat aged and battletorn, that's excellent!
I hope every now and then she'll get photos without her blindfold. You worked so much wonder on her eye area!! Ok but for real, I am not trying to boss anyone around just express my enthusiasm for nice looking things

@Alewife my own dreams of holiday photos and group shots of my doll collection I wanted to do this year feel like they are crashing and burning but there is still time I guess

@tenukihandcrafts ah I love your comment about the spaceship! That's too funny. (I was writing a sci-fi that I fear I might never get back to writing so I love it). The object over there in the picture if you can imagine it is a kind of sunburst mirror with a large central circle then round reflective gems on rods radiating outward.

Edit: ah you did get to spend some time on your Lucy!! That's awesome! I love smiling soah so much. I think this outfit style is really cool for yours!

@Arengil I love your photo :aheartbea
Sleepy/relaxing dolls in cozy indoor environments make me feel happy.

      • x 4
    36. @AlisonVonderland . Ah, a mirror, I can see that, thanks for describing it. Is your sci fi story the world your crew inhabits? i hope you keep working on your story, at your own pace, of course. You never know when inspiration will strike!

I did spend time with Lucy. She needed a wig; happily the grey wig fit. I’ve trimmed the bangs a touch since I took the above photo.

      • x 2
    37. @tenukihandcrafts
I think grey hair is so interesting on dolls. One of those colors sometimes I realize I don't have in my collection and would probably spice things up. Anyway Lucy is very charming, I'm looking forward to seeing her as you're working on her style.

I started writing the story in the fall/winter 2 years ago and used a few character personalities that existed in my dolls as my backbone for it: Fer and Marina, plus Kam, Sven, Omega and Laurel (currently defunct). I then made a doll after another character, Hawa. My dolls don't really have a world or worlds they live in when I'm thinking about them/ I like sitting different ones with each other and still imagining them interacting. They are real-life objects to me with individual personalities and I usually just think of them kind of abstractly like that. But it made it easier to start writing something using some character archetypes that were already intimately known to me.

Edit: and thanks for the encouragement.

    38. How have I never posted any pix here of my beloved boys here? (Likely cuz never notice this tread before)

Well lets fix this I have 3 Efldoll Aden boys, Bart, Thaddeus, and Cobalt.
      [IMG]"The Boys"
Thad is Bart's (reforming) evil clone (long DC comics plus many years of RP base story) and Cobalt was born of a random joking around idea (and an even longer story with an MMO, and some what if questions.)

Bonus fun fact Thaddeus was actually my second male doll and 4th doll in the BJD hobby, and as of Halloween I've had him 17 years.

      • x 9
    39. That's an awesome collection of Elfdoll guys @Tippetarius :D is Cobalt the one with dark eyeliner and the goggles? Solid look at any rate!

      • x 1
    40. Yes he is, the eyeliner and goggles were a big part of his look when I made him in City of Villains many many years ago. Back when that game was live and he somehow went from making a joke to my main PC villain side.

Bart is the one in the Flash tee, as the Flash is his grandfather. And Thad Bart's clone is in the middle his shirt reads "You say evil clone like it's a bad thing."

I've joked if I ever find a fourth Aden I'd make Mercury from Amalgam Comics (The Marvel and DC cross overs mixing characters from each together.) I might adore the mold and just looking for an excuse now. XD

    41. Well, I fell for a tan Elfdoll Ruru and am awaiting her arrival now. :oI was actually thinking I would probably avoid getting any new doll in 2026, so wow, I sure blew that one fast! But I'm feeling really optimistic about her. For real though, my heart is full and wants not for more dolls from here. I will finally have two Elfdolls in the same house again, which hasn't happened since around 2015. I did my research and it seems like there were lots of the tan Rurus with minor damage, so this one is no different but I think she will be a real joy to me. I'm super excited to meet her and work on her! :chibi

      • x 10
    42. Congratulations! I've always thought that tan Ruru was one of the most stunning dolls every made and wish I had one too. I've got a Ruru but not tan.

      • x 2
    43. Oh well that's awesome @Mu Shu I would love to see your ruru spam sometime!
I'm very smitten. I really hate it when my crew gets all back to dolls in basically the same resin color again because it feels like I overuse certain colors to flatter most of them. It will be a joy to have a tan doll again and I can enjoy colors looking different around her.
There were several elfdoll sculpts I probably would have also gotten back then, but Ruru wasn't an option as a limited release. It's a great opportunity. I'm very happy.

    44. Congrats AlisonVonderland on getting a Ruru! She’s an awesome sculpt. :love

I’m really excited to see what you have planned for her. I have so much love for Rainman’s early dolls. :aheartbea

    46. Thanks both @Rabbit-moon and @mustbemissa
Yeah, I love doll nostalgia and feel very positive and nostalgic about the Elfdoll rainy girls in general.

I love yours so much @mustbemissa is she on the volks sd16 body? Wait this is a much more urgent question, don't leave! what size eyes is really working on Ruru?

Mine will be staying on her own body for better or for worse. I'm excited for an old elfdoll body as my poor Lydia never found herself one.

We are having positively crazy warm winter weather and it's the best thing I could have asked for right now. I love every moment of it. I might get to paint my Ruru when she arrives but if not she has a faceup I can get started with and just sew clothes through winter. It's weirdly high pressure for me these days thinking of how I actually want to paint my dolls when it's time for repainting.

I like the long black hair though. And will probably try to find brown eyes. I kind of have something in mind when I have the chance to gather what I need together.

      • x 5
    47. Ahh, thank you!! You have a good eye - she is! She's on the SD16 body in PS Amber. I still have the Elfdoll body tucked away but it's very charming. I'm so impressed by how well the Ruru tan has held up since 2006.

I hope the weather holds for you! Can't wait to see your girl come together. :)

    49. Figured it's about time I shared a pic of my Elfdoll K. Currently she is on an unmodded male body but I will be attempting to sculpt a bust for her when I get the chance.

I just got the proper eyes for her last week. Bottom pic in the spoiler is a comparison to the eyes she came with. I like how the newer ones make her look more vulnerable, since she is in a house full of dangerous villains after all! :thumbup

Still working on a wig for her, currently awaiting the yarn I'll use. I'm planning to attempt long yarn braids while still brushing out the ends to glue on as wefts, if the glue will hold something like that up, Wish me luck!

Edit: as far as I know, this is the Homme color, but I cant confirm since the seller didn't mention it iirc. Does anyone recognize this as such? Granted, it's artificial lighting in these photos, but she definitely has a bit more of a tan tint than my other dolls including my NS Miracledoll.

      • x 6
    50. @Cattya do you already have any other normal resin color elfdoll at home? The elfdoll normal resin is a lightish quite fleshy pinkish color. It is pinker than a volks standard type color.
My reasoning, without my own elfdoll homme at home to look at is that if the resin color is somewhat darker then it must be their homme color. (That's what I always heard about it over the years) But there are surely homme owners here who can weigh in.

I love your K! What's her name? She's got great eyebrows. I never looked very closely at any of the masculine elfdoll sculpts and hadn't realized K has that tiny smirk. It will be cool to see what you do with her!

      • x 2
    51. Cattya, it’s so wonderful to see your K. The plans you have for her sound so fascinating. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a female K, so I’m very excited to see what you do with her. :D

As for the resin color, I’m pretty sure all the K’s were cast in that Homme color. Most of Rainman’s early boys were that slight tan color. I have an extra K head, and finding a resin match has been tough.

Actually, I have such a soft-spot for K, here’s a pix of my two K’s hoping everyone had a wonderful holiday season. :hollyberry

(The K on the left is a Standard K, and on the right is the Lmtd Edition Special K.) I love these boys to bits! :aheartbea
