Elf or Human Ears? Doll Preferences & Choices

Apr 9, 2016

    1. All of the dolls I have on hand currently have human ears, but I have two elf-eared dolls on the way! I think elf ears are really sweet.

    2. I was unsure where I stood on elf ears and vampire fangs, but I think I've made up my mind: if the sculpt looks like a "normal" human, no elf ears. I only want elf ears if the sculpt has odd/fantasy proportions in the first place.

    3. I can’t pick because I honestly like them both. I have brought a doll with human ears and elf ears to add on as attachments using putty though. Best of both worlds.

    4. Neither, because I prefer elf ears but not of the common variety. I want a subtle little point, small and cute like the Tolkien elves, but I find that most sculpts with pointed ears have rather large ones that are almost more reminiscent of Warcraft elves. I therefore end up with human ears instead because they are subtle and can be hidden by hair.

    5. If it had been an option to choose between elf ears and human, most of my dolls would have elf ears. Only one of my dolls ever had the option of non-human ears, the rest are regular. I guess I would rather have a doll with a face and body I love rather than elf ears for the sake of elf ears.

    6. My BJDs inhabit an imaginary fantasy world of my own making (rather like a Tim Burton’s “Alice” aesthetic) where anything goes and diversity is key. I’ve populated my collection with everything my little heart has desired, from elves, to humans, to robotics, to anime, to anthros and even planthros! So of course elf ears are right up my alley…the more bizarre, the better!;)

    7. My story is very human oriented, but I do have a couple dolls with slightly pointed ears, and extra sharp teeth. The supernatural element to my story is there, but it's light. Human's don't know about it, and disguise is important. Most of my dolls are just human.

    8. I mostly pay attention to the face, and if a doll has human ears I can resculpt them later if needed. But I’m naturally attached to all kinds of elf ears - from slightly pointed to long or droopy.
I have six dolls with elf ears in my collection; I’d probably have more if I didn’t also need some human characters. :)

    9. I love elf ears and would want more, though I'm afraid the long ones will break. But I love all types of sculpts and want variety.

    10. Human ears, all the way - no elves/fae in my crew. One of my dolls has a head variant with subtle pointed ears. I haven't bought this alt head yet, but if I did, I'd either sand them down to become rounded human ears, or hide the pointy ears under hair all the time.

I do like nicely sculpted doll ears, it shows the maker's care in adding those details. But ear sculpting is not a make-or-break quality for me. One of my dolls has the back of their ear fused to the side of their head (it's not a completely separated ear) -- I roll my eyes at it  but most of the time I don't notice it. Some of my dolls have their ears completely covered by their hair anyway. If the ears are big enough to peek out from the hair and look nice too, I'll style the doll that way and it'll become part of their look.

    11. I love elf ears, but I'm also a fan of fantasy dolls in general so maybe I'm just biased:whee:

    12. I really prefer elf ears because I like fantasy dolls more.

    13. I personally don’t like elf ears. When seeking out my first doll, I wasn’t looking for anything too specific, I just had an aesthetic and a price range in mind, but I passed up a few otherwise-perfect secondhand dolls because they had elf ears. I like fantasy, but I’m yet to come up with any elf characters, so I don’t think an elf-eared doll would inspire me.

    14. It really does depend on the ideas I get when I look at the doll. I do have a few elf characters, but I'm terrible about buying them with human ears lol.

    15. Depends on the doll (and character, if I'm shelling one)-- I find I get a bit picky about the ears, but usually that's only if I'm not sure about the sculpt, and it won't make or break the decision for me.

    16. I'm a sucker for longer elf ears but if the face doesn't work for me, regardless if it has elf ears or not, I'm not interested. I also have pairs of removable elf ears that work beautifully for when I like a face sculpt but want it to have elf ears. Most of my dolls actually have pre-sculpted or removable elf ears on.

    17. I focus on the face more than the ears because most of the wigs I'd be interested in would cover them either way. I do love elf ears as long as they're not super long. I feel if a face really fits the concept of having really big/long elf ears then I'd go for it. Smaller pointed elf ears are just a lovely detail to have/know even if it's hidden most of the time and adds to the concept I have in mind for my doll's character.
