Hi all! As the time goes on and I watch my cute little collection and I see how my interests in sculpts change. I used to absolutely WORSHIP doll chateau and now... I think they are very nice but not very much what I like anymore. I find myself gravitating towards the less common pretty faced doll. (Not at all hating on them though, because pretty and beautiful dolls are always pretty and beautiful!) Then, I suddenly was struck by a jolt of LOVE! I found elderly bjd sculpts! I found a few scuplts with Dream High Studio. I found a scuplt named Laila and I want to cry because I would have bought her right at that moment if she wasn't sold out. ( I have reached out to ask if she will ever be available again and await an answer ) I also found Svetlana Germanova and again, OBSESSED! but then I found out that this doll isn't available right now either! I wonder if anyone else has found any other sculpts of elderly dolls, or shares in my sadness that there arent more?
Elderly dolls are a rarety in the hobby, sadly. I own only one elderly doll, and she is no longer available, like dream high studio cuties. She is an Otherside Dione: She is both very massive and short, I love her. She is around 35-40 cm ? I never measured her. Edit: there is currently The Broken Maiden making an old man sculpt but I do neither know when he will be available, nor how much he will measure or cost....
He's not available for sale currently (idk if he ever will be, only time will tell!) but The Broken Maiden recently showed their adorable old man doll!
I would love some grandma and grandpa dolls ... like the ones one can found in wooden/clay marionette variety really elderly people but till now it's mostly young looking dolls with some more "realistic" ones that can pass as 40s or 50s the most. I would love to see the elderly ones!!!!
She is so beautiful, I love her tattoos!!! woah that sculpt is so cool!!!! I love how the body is staying aged up!!! That is so COOL!!! The scuplter keeping the body at the same age is amazing! I realized that the Dream High Studio uses the same bodies as the younger dolls use so you either would have to body blush, keep the body covered, or just live with it. Elderly marrionettes are so fun and interesting to look at!! I really want to see more than the usual pretty and young faces I feel like I geek out over almost anything going outside of those lines. I'm really lucky, LulaDoll said they have three more Laila dolls available so I will get her after all! I hope to see more sculpters age up their dolls because I find age to be such a cool portrayal in dolls!
Not a marionette-type doll, but JR Shick’s Arthur makes for a wonderfully gritty (and grumpy) old man.
When I clicked on the link for Laila she was available. Maybe try again? I had that too, when I started out I absolutely loved those ultra cute faces of fairyland and soom (thinking erin and rico mermaids from back in the day) but then eventually grew to like more adult ish sculpts, which somehow are so hard to come by!? Like whyyy!? I also absolutely ADORED DC, but they discontinued almost all their dolls at this point and what made them stand out originally, like Elizabeth on the spider body, seems gone now sadly
Oh my gosh I love that sculpt!! We need more middle aged and older sculpts I'm actually so excited because LulaDoll responded and said they still had 3 dolls in stock and updated the website!! I'm going to buy one tomorrow!!! (They have one in white skin and two in sunset skin!) I knowww!! Why are aged up sculpts so rare?! I find them sooo amazing to look at! Like the baby faces and very young faces are pretty and I'll smile at them but they all kinda start looking the same after a while sadly. I want variety! I also want to knit them all little sweaters hahaha DC had some really cool dolls when I first joined the hobby but now (idk if its them or me) but they just don't strike me as hard as they used too. Its so sad because they were a major reason I was into bjds specifically!
Thats amazing!! Im glad you can get her awww and little sweaters sound fantastic. Yeah, they were REALLY weird when I started in 2016. A bit too weird for me at first but they quickly grew on me and became my favorite companyand now? Hmm... Normal. A bit too anime fantasy ish imo. A bit too commercial. Lost their spark. I mean, that kid centaur body with the spikey legs and boney torso? AmAzing. All the youth sculpts? Amazing, Evangeling is not my favorite but still beautiful. I want one youth dc doll so badly I dont even totally care which sculpt. Their faces were very strange too to some extent and that was just amazing. I really miss those days, now sadly I think they are all getting a bit too anime, which is still great, dont get me wrong, but the mainstream arsthetic kf the hobby has shifted a bit
Ohhhhhh my gosh don't even get me started on the DC centaur bodies. They had me in an absolute chokehold when I first got into the hobby, (funny enough I also think I joined the bjd hobby in 2016) no other company could compare. DC was just so weird and different and now, you're so right. They've gone very mainstream anime vibes and, while a pretty look, it's not at all what I fell in love with them for. Maybe one day they will start to move back to where they started but for now its giving basic (not trying to be mean, basic is still pretty )
YEAHHHH I agree. Alan elf centaur was the first doll I really actually fell in love with. I obsessed over him for YEARS. Yes, YEARS. I was still in highschool back then and couldnt afford him then. I was very much in the doll needs to have a character and full story wave of that time so I fabricated a whole story and character to justify getting that doll eventand now it seems like he's taking over the whole story, although he's not the main character. Sure, Alan is far from a really crazy sculpt, but yeah. Their sculpts were too nice and I loved the weird proportions of their bodies :c
ALAN OMG YES HE WAS MY BIG OBSESSION TOO!!! Ahhhh! I couldn't justify it at the time I wasn't used to the prices yet so I legit kept the browser open just to look at him lmfaooo I ended up settling for a minifee as my first doll and ended up giving her away a few years later sadly. I wanted all of the crazy wild DC sculpts but Alan was my one that I felt i couldn't live without I've always been so impressed with the story tellers in this community! not gonna lie, half of my dolls still don't have names and I've had all of them for a minimum of 3 years at this point! I just cant decide!
Haha yeah I feel the same. Although now I have him, I have a harder time bonding with the doll :/ had a bit of a breakthrough lately though, but man had him for a fee years already, life got in the way I didnt do much with any of my dolls. Im sure you'll figure their names out! But names are hard, too many pretty names in the world!!!! Storytelling is nice, but its a lot of work amd thinking and breaking your head over things and plots and stuff
Oof I feel that about connecting to the dolls, I now have two secondhand DC dollies and neither of them made me super invested in them. One is a regular body and the other is a mermaid and both of them just didn't hit that og DC feel. I'm starting to get back into the hobby again after doing a bunch of moving last year. Here's to hoping we both can get back into our crafting and dolls again! I think I don't even know where to start with names! I have no stories for them, I just think they're neat I want to do a bunch of faceups and body blushing and hopefully their names will come to me as I do that!
I hope you have a good time, faceups are so much fun and crafting for dollies is everything! I mean, dolls are pretty, one doesnt need stories to admire them I also love dolls just for their sake!
I do have to re buy some products but I'm actually eager to get going on these faceups! Yeah they are so cute no matter if they have names or not!
I got interested in having a an older male doll this year. I couldn't find what I wanted for the character, so I have been working on one. Since I use dolls to have physical versions of characters I like, I like having some variety. The cast can't only be young hotties lol
message Lula doll about Laila she may well have one! she often has a few held back. The owner is pretty responsive on instagram lula doll
I wish there were more elderly-looking dragon dolls! A lot of them look quite ageless, which is lovely, but it would be nice to see some takes on older versions.
I have seen on Instagram Zjakazumi dolls, she has 1:12 scale grandparents, aunts, uncles, babies, kids, young slender, young chubby, both male and female. I think they are on topic.
That is soo cool!!!! I'd love to work on sculpting my own too but I'm very intimidated by the thought! Yours looks amazing!!! I knowww there are so many attractive and young sculpts! Give me varietyyyyyyy!!! I actually did end up messaging them and they had three left in stock!!! (two now ) and I bought her immediately! They have one in white skin and one in sunset skin now! I'm so happy they responded the same night and everything! Now that would be so cool! More aged up fantasy dolls!!! Dragons are so cool and they live for so long but they have to age some time! (Thinking about elderly sheep sculpts sitting with elderly dragon sculpts is SO CUTE omg. Would you want an antro or an actual dragon sculpt? I think both would be so cool, but I'd prefer an anthro myself! I'm in love!!! There is such a wide variety of body types and faces too! And so tiny oh my goodness!!! I'm partial to smaller mature sculpts so seeing this artist Thank you for introducing me to them!!
One of the characters I'd love to have in doll form is an old guy... but with how hard it would be to find any sculpt that looks like him, I haven't been holding out a lot of hope of just stumbling across something and going 'oh, him!'. Still, it's always very cool whenever someone does sculpt older faces. Maybe someday I'll run across my dream guy.
This was not for me but I want to chime in: Have been dreaming about an elderly dragon a long time. Not thin like Chinese dragons but more like a cross between a classical Welsh dragon and cat Garfield. A bit chubby, enjoying a glass of wine and his naps on a gold horde. Welcome!
I prefer actual dragons, but an anthro has potential to be really, really cool too! SpiritImprintDolls did a lovely job on their She is a Dragon! This exactly! Not an old, wise Asian lung but a battle worn, ancient dragon with a great hoard that was hard-fought to obtain. it’s a bit of a shame, I feel like Dream Valley may have had an opportunity to do something similar with their latest dragon, Griffon, but didn’t. Although I suppose it matches with the rider being younger as well.
Thats so cool! Is there any distinct features that you are looking out for in particular? What would make you say, "THAT is my character!" Oh my gosh I can see it now! A nice winkly old westen/Welsh dragon living in his later years. I do like Griffin but the thing I realized is they called the 1/6 size "young Griffin" and the 1/4 size "adult Griffin" but its the same exact sculpt just bigger Not very visually older which is pretty funny but I can see why they did that and didn't make an aged up version (though that would have been very nice)
I think there's a lot that I could do with blushing, but I'd want at least some sculpting in terms of, like... the immediate thing I think of is deep smile lines. Somewhat prominent nose and squared chin. What I should do is compile a reference sheet for each of the characters I most want to shell, that I can compare to sculpts as I find them...
Smile lines!!! Yes! Even if it's not an aged sculpt, I am so surprised that the youthful sculpts dont even have smile lines! Every time I see a very large grin on a sculpt and they have those smile lines I'm automatically drawn to them! I love the larger noses as well! So unique and creates so much character.
I always go wild for a good nose! But yeah, even on a youthful face smile lines give so much-- one of my sister's dolls is a little boy with the biggest grin and the way it's sculpted is just so great.
So lovely to know there are elderly sculpt fans here! I'm not usually a fan of "small mature" sculpts but Laila is just something else entirely I kept watching over the last one in stock and ended up buying sooner than planned in fear of someone getting ahead of me I would've loved a fullset but oh well. At least I was able to get one. I was curious about the OB White resin color, but the only available one was in tan skin. It does fit an elderly sculpt though and I love her. I'm going to make a profile for her once I get her wig back on, the head is just on the borderline between 1/6 and 1/4 and the shape doesn't help lol.
Whoa! Thanks for sharing the links. It's actually nice to see more varieties of dolls and I'm all for the elderly looking ones. They have a charm to them that is different and it'll be interesting to see what other dolls are out there I'm not aware of.
