Sewing Easy Dress Tutorial. <3

Jan 15, 2007

    1. Thank you for the tutorial, Blue Eternity! Here's the dress I made for my daughter's Ju. I used lace instead of grommets, and I kept the squared hemline because it looked interesting. :)

    2. Miyu what a cute dress! Also I love your girl's wig. Did you make it?

    3. Thank you! Yes, I made the wig, too. I made everything in her outfit.

    4. Zero experience in sewing and can't read patterns or use a sewing machine, but omigosh this helped so much! And it's so versatile. Tiny Choseol is wearing a dress made from an old tshirt from this tutorial (under a sock hoodie), and Nu Kwa, at 68cm of huge breasted longleggedness, is using it as the base for her (still WIP) dragon robes, scaled up to slightly longer than floor length and darted to accomodate her curves. Even I could figure it out!

      [IMG] [IMG]

    5. darts are just little triangle pinches of fabric. put the dress on without the darting on your girl inside out. then, right over one breast, and then the other, pinch the fabric so that you make a triangle. these are called princess darts bc they go over the breast line vertically. anything on that line is a princess seam.

after pinning your triangles, remove the dress and sew from the top of the hem to the tip of the triangle. you can sew it in a slight curve to match the breast, or jsut straight for now until you get used to darting. both types of darts exist...actually there are tons of styles of darts, but for this purpose, a curved or straight dart should work fine! if you need a pic for reference, let me know! ill do my best to draw something in paint for you ;)

    6. What an awesome tutorial! 8D It's so simple and so nice-looking! About the darts, though, a picture of the "triangles" would be great...how do you keep it from wrinkling the fabric?

    7. sometimes it helps to iron the triangles down, let me work out a badly drawn picture in MS paint, and see if i cant find a tutorial online somewhere for you guys!

      EDIT: http://www.burdastyle.com/howtos/show/867

      that should help some.

    8. This tutorial and wonderful and Allura now has at least one outfit we both like~! <3

I'm so excited to finally have something for her to wear~! Thank you so much for posting this tutorial. ^______^

    9. Got Pictures!!! yay!

    10. I made another dress for Allura using this tutorial today ^______^ No more dresses for a little while after this though, because we're going to be making yukata and kimono for the Japanese festival in September~ ^.^

I made this dress a little too big, but that's okay. XD

Also, I got the idea to use the little rings they always use to finish off necklaces for lacing! (That was a bad description @.@" Erm, they're the little rings that connect the clasp pieces and the string/rope of the necklace! They're a bit like tiny keychain rings.) It worked wonderfully! ^___^

Also, pardon the dress not being tied nicely in back... I'm lazy. XD

    11. And also, the dividing it by four thing, do i divide by three to get the 1/3 doll measurements? I have everything out except the eyelets and i was wondering about that

    12. roxxihearts - You divide by four because there are four panels to the dress - one front, two sides and one back.

    13. This was actually the first thing I did for my boy.. even before I got him, and that was like.. 1½ year ago now.. XD Just never posted a picture of it. So the picture is OLD. Actually I think I took it the same day that I got him... Oh well.. XD
      [IMG]

And like 8-9 months ago I started to make a jacket with this tutorial but some things was weird and I never finished it.. until just some weeks ago.. XD I really like how it turned out and it fits his personality... :'D
      [IMG]

Thanks a lot for this tutorial! I love it! C:
I used it for another dress too.. but I didn't really like it and the picture is big so I'll just link it.

    14. I wanted to have something finished for when my doll arrived, so I tried this out. It was really simple to make! :D
The fabric I used was fairly thin and stretchy, so I sewed some interfacing in to the back panel so it wouldn't stretch out.
I also don't have a grommet setter, so I used hooks for the lacing at the back.

link to back of dress (I also sewed a tiny piece of lace at the bottom of the opening to hide my awful handstitching there.)

    15. Thanks for a great tutorial!
I don't have my doll yet, so this seemed like a great idea for her 'first dress'! Now she won't be nakey on arrival 8D
Not sure how it'll fit, but I've yet to do the fastenings so i'll wait until she arrives n__n Also need to tuck away those stray threads.
I left the hem square 'cause i thought it looked nice C:

(Excuse my bad sewing, and the machine messed up on the right detailing)

    16. [IMG][IMG]
Made for my CCC Fuuga whom I don't have yet, so it's being modeled by my tiny OT doll...>___> This dress is danged tiny, but actually went together pretty well! Thanks, this tutorial rocks.

    17. @ Sushi is the outfit in Pink and white one single Clothes or is there a Skirt/Dress under the jacket? (it's very cute^^-)

    18. I used the pattern to make this dress - and I'm so happy with it! It totally suit my character!

Thank you so much for this amazing (and really easy!) pattern!

    19. I forgot I had the pic's of the dress that I made thank you so much! Cho has a cute dress!

      [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

    20. OMG I made the cutest dress using your tutorial!!! *hugs on* Thank you so much!

    21. Hey guys, I am trying to make the dress for the very same doll as callum91 (the Iplehouse YID) and I am in the process of getting the measurements from someone else on here that actually has the doll.
In the meantime, what I have done is I copied a full body shot from the Iplehouse website, and I sized it in Photoshop to 59cm tall, and I printed it out, and I am using that to figure out length of skirts and stuff.
I made a corset with a pattern, and put it on top of the picture and it looks about right! If I have to alter on the actual doll I am guessing it will be minimal.
Now I know that measuring a paper is not the same as the real doll, BUT if you measure from the nipple down, on the part of the picture that she is almost sideways, I got 6.5, so I am making that measurement 7.5 so the top of my dress covers part of her top-boob.
I will make it straight like that for now, and maybe leave the top unfinished till she arrives, THEN I can put it on her, and measure darts from the nippies to the top, then finish the top after the darts are put in.

Makes sense? I hope so... :)

    22. Very cool idea :)
I have something in mind that involves attaching a long full skirt to a "corset" looking thing... bodice I think they call them? But I want to do shoulder straps, bring the bust line UNDER the boobs, and leave the whole thing open in the front.
Put eyelets on the corset only, and lace it up, and leave the front skirt open. So of course you have to put another skirt underneath in a different colour :)
Ohmy that just got me all excited, seeing that I sort of learned how to make SD corsets yesterday LOL

Oh yes, mine is supposed to be some Ren Fair outfit, that goes with a white poofy shirt under the bustier! That's the word! So sort of "wenchy" but more elegant wench :)

    23. Thank you! Great idea. Someone above mentioned they couldn't get the dress over the doll's hips, right around the same time that I was wondering how far down to make the cut at the back for the lacing... and then I saw your version :) Problem solved :) Now I just need to find a zipper small enough... OR leave the back open for now, see how it fits her when she get here, and then decide if I want to lace it, or zip it, or button it, or snap it :)
      Thanks though.

    24. I gots to make my baby 2 dressies :3 This tutorial is so awesome *_*

Sorry for the lack of variety in the colors xD; Don't have a lot of money right now so I just used the extra cloth my grandma has lying around ^_^ ; Yes, his first clothing was a dress >:D ^-^

    25. Ok so my images won't post... says I am posting 13 images and can only post 12....
BUT I am only trying to post FOUR images...

If I have kids, specially a girl, I am SO buying her a BJD. I never thought something could inspire me so much to sew clothing. I won't even make clothes for myself, but the doll is not even here yet and I'm making clothes with her measurements!!!

The front... I don't have any lace or trim right now, BUT I am finishing this one with white lace at the top AND at the hem. I put the ribbon a bit away from the edge so some of the black would show, for a nice contrast between the white ribbon and the white lace I am going to put on it.
      [IMG][IMG]

      From the side
      [IMG][IMG]

      ... CONTINUED...

    26. And for part 2.....

From the back... I made the whole back open, and just basted it closed for now with big stitches, because I am not sure if I am using a zipper, or cord and grommets, or buttons, or Velcro, or what. I also have to fit it on my doll when she gets here, and make sure her butt can go through the opening :D lol Sorry about the blurriness.

[IMG]I don't know if you can see in this one the double stitching. Only second time using the double needle... mine is called a Metallica Needle :D how fitting... For me :D lol My fiancee laughed when I showed him the needle case lol
      [IMG][IMG]

Wow... finally learned how to put up images... About bloody time :)

Oh yes... a round of applause for my beautiful model Spinelli, the trusty wine bottle!!! LOL She's been so helpful to me :)

    27. Made this a couple days ago, just got around to taking pictures. Plus Kaiya's new wig ^_^

    28. Ok here we go... finally finished :) Front shot and back shot :)

      [IMG] [IMG]

Finally found a lace I could use. I used the whole thing at the bottom, and cut it in half for the top part :)

    29. im having SO much trouble doing it! the stitching wasn't straight, it kept crumpling in my hand, and it looked like a ratty reject T_T What am i doing wrong? Is the fabric too thin? where i really kept messing up was the "V" part...it just went downhill from there. How thick should a fabric be btw? And how can i make my lines straighter without going so slow i mess up the sewing machine? agh..i need help >.<

    30. Took me over 10 hours or something, but I did it =O

Man this is an awesome pattern, but I don't think I will do it again until I can use a machine D: hand sewing all parts is soo time consuming D:
      And this was my second dress ever XD;

    31. I used cotton broadcloth and 100% cotton thread with no problems. I don't know what fabric you are using but some are just hard to work with if you aren't used to them. I myself had issues with the circle part because i'm not good at sewing anything but straight lines and I know it's partly practice.

I don't know how much sewing practice or how advanced you are so I'll jut put out a few suggestions. You could try doing the "v" part first so that you can get used to it and it might actually be easier that way. Also don't use silk, it's hard to work with. Oh and you can't really mess up the sewing machine by going slow as long as you are going at the same pace all the time.

If you can't get the stitches straight i'd say you probably just need practice. I had the same problem once. And i'm sorry I couldn't help on the "crumbling" part. Maybe it's my lack of sewing experience or i really didn't know what you meant :(

    32. i see...thank you! i'll keep those helpful hints in mind when i try to re-do it lol. and btw what i meant by crumpling was like...it would start to bunch in my hand which would then make the needle and thread go kablooie and then i had to redo the whole threading...sewing is so hard! >.<

    33. Aw ok. Make sure you've threaded your bobbin per the instructions for the machine and have the excess thread going in the back of your machine. If it's in the front it can get stuck. This is hard to explain so i'd look at the manual. If the thread itself is bunching on the material it could also be that you need a new needle or the thread tension could be off. if you are doing the zig zag stitch it could be because the zig zag is too tight. Yes there are a lot of things that can throw a machine off.

It could also be your machine. If it's over a year old it might need a tune up. If it's new and less than $50 it's the machine. Most machines over $100 or close to that are halfway decent but these $50 machines have issues.

    34. I'm sewing this right now :D I'm having a bit of trouble and it's time consuming by hand xD but it's coming along okay. I'll post it once it's done :D Also, if you're doing the back in snaps like I did, use the hip measurement for the waist and just position your snaps to cinch in the waist. I have to patch up the hip area in the back of my dress cause it wouldn't fit over them <3 lol >_>; maybe I'll add a bow in the back to hide it xD

    35. First time using a sewing machine in some ten years. The poor thing is just a "prototype" version of one I am doing currently to get me back in the swing of things. So, of course, the dress needs a couple more darts in the front to go over her large bust and some extra work in the back as well as finishing off the ribbon to add it to the actual dress.. I say it is a strong first attempt in a few years.

      -image redacted-

    36. i thought it might interest you to see how i pulled up a lace up on my 1/6 scale :3
i had cut the back open before discovering that eyelets don't come in a small enough size, solution?
I bought a set of the smallest hooks and eyes I could find and using only the eyes and some TINY ribbon I made this:
      [IMG][IMG]

    37. Here it's my first try:

      [IMG] [IMG]

      [IMG] [IMG]

Thanks for the tutorial ^^. I love it and I'll repeat for sure

    38. This was a wonderful tutorial , with a quick edit to the pattern my friend made me a beautiful floor length gown for my beauty <3
      [IMG]

    39. Even though I won't be getting my doll for a veeeery long time (unless I manage to get a job it'll probably take over a year to save up :c ) I will start sewing tomorrow :o
I might even sew a dress my size using some pattern similar to this one and make a tiny replica xD
I don't have much experience sewing though >_> But luckily my mom has :D

As my mom used to sew a lot, she has loads and loads of fabric at home YaY! ^_^
      *off to draw patterns*

    40. Hey, if you know the doll you are getting, you can use the measurements on the website to make the pattern. I did that with this pattern and it WORKED! I made it so long before my doll got here, that I gave the dresses away to a friend (one in SD size and one in MSD size), and they both FIT!!!!! I've never even seen her dolls, since she was in Florida at the time, and I'm in Toronto :)

    41. Yup, it's going to be a DZ Aimi :)
I've already cut out some patterns, did that yesterday xP

    42. Good for you!!!!
What kind of patterns did you make already?

    43. I'm no good at sewing and making patterns, though I made patterns for a simple long gown, the original pattern and also for one with a kind of.. Flower skirt? Petal shirt? Whatever, I don't really know the word for it or how to describe it xP

    44. I forgot, I also made a two piece set from this recently. It's tea-stained. :D The back is held together by lace I crochet myself @_@; because it was the nicest closure I could do with what I had... haha... (The form is an SD girl size.)

    45. What a wonderfully straightforward little pattern! ^^ Here are two variations I made this week ...

      One for Merryweather, here -

      - and one for Lydya, here.

    46. Wow, I'll definitely give this a shot! (once I have a doll... ^^; ). Thanks so much for posting it! The polka-dotted fabric you used looks exactly like the material of a vintage dress that belonged to my grandmother. The shape of the dress looks similar, too. Anyway, amazing dresses, everyone!

    47. Amazing tutorial!thanks for sharing^^

    48. Thank you, this look really good. Nicely done tutorial

    49. Very adorable :)

    50. I forgot to share the two I've made...
This one I started with an altered version of the original pattern, trying to account for the bust. Unfortunately, it ended up too big and even when it was laced up as tight as it would go, it was still loose.....About two years later, I pulled it back out and realized that using a zipper instead would make it fit perfectly :)
My second attempt. This one turned out great the first time heh.
And just now, I'm getting ready to make two more dresses using this tutorial! It's really a great tutorial! I even use it when I'm making my own patterns for other things, since the basic idea behind the whole thing really helps me understand how to put together most things. Thanks for the awesome tutorial!

    51. soo adorable! I want to try this!

    52. It looks great :D Maybe I'll try it sometime :D

    53. I will definitely be trying this! I may adapt it into a wedding dress for my lovely girl! ^^

    54. Amazing! I'll have to try this. :)

    55. such a beautiful dress ^^

    56. this pattern looks amazing!!

    57. Thanks for sharing! It looks realy easy to sew :)

    58. The tutorial was great.
Thank you for this nice tutorial

    59. [IMG]
I lined mine, but it was still pretty easy. Very nice tutorial.
