Sewing Easy Dress Tutorial. <3

Jan 15, 2007

    1. I posted a long time ago about making a dress tutorial. Well, here it finally is!! ^_^

This also works for all of you who are waiting for you dolls, it should fit if you have the right measurements and make it correctly. X3 I made mine for my doll while he was on his way!

I tried to make it the simpliest as I could, but I have never been very good at explaining things. I tried my best!!
If you have any questions, PM me and I'll try my best to answer. I'm on everyday. *nods*

(Pictures have been made small for faster loading! Yay~)

I hope this will help you make more clothes for your darlings! I might make more tutorials for simple clothes if this gets a good responce and I find some time. Pattern should work for all dolls, no matter sex or size.

NOTE : You may want to save this, sometimes I clean out my photbucket and pics might be lost. ^^; Sorry!

Here is Yuki (DOC Too) In the dress I made him:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99655
That is the gallery post. Please click to see pics! ^_^

      A teaser XD

      DRESS TUTORIAL

      Materials :
      - Doll (or just doll measurements - * I have the pattern pictured)
      - Fabric
      - Lace or trim (optional)
      - Eyelits/Gromets (scrapbooking size or smaller)
      - Eyelits/Gromets Setter
      - Ribbon/String *
      - Sewing Machien/Needle and Thread *
      - Pins
      - Scissors *
      - Calculator/Math Brain (I havn't got a math brain, I used a Calc. XD) *
      - Graphing Paper/Paper *
      - Ruler *
      - Pen/Pencil *

      * = Not pictured

      ------------------------------------------
      1. Create a Pattern!

Materials needed: Measurements, Graph Paper/Paper, Ruler, Calc/Math Brain, Pencil/Pen, Scissors

For this step, you're going to need to get your measurements. You need BUST, WAIST, and BUST TO WAIST. Write these down (in CM, it makes it easier). Devide BUST and WAIST by 4. Write these down.

Get your paper and writing pencil/pen. Graphing paper will help you keep your lines straight, but you don't really need it. Get your ruler and and draw the 1/4 BUST measurement. Now, from the middle of that, draw a line going DOWN. It should be as long as the FULL BUST TO WAIST measurement. Now, on the end of that line, draw a line for the 1/4 WASIT measurement using the BUST TO WAIT as a center. Then, to finish the first part of making the pattern, draw a line for however long you want to dress to be (from waist to end). I usually take full leg measurement and devide by two. This will make it just at the knee. Now, draw a line as the FULL BUST MEASUREMENT (NOT THE 1/4! THE ORIGINAL FULL.) using the line you just drew down for how long you wanted it to be as the center, like you did for bust to waist.
Was that confusing? Sorry! x.x Look at the pic below, for all you visual learners (I'm a visual gal, so I included it.)

You should end up with this :

Now you just need to finish it up by adding seam allowences. To each end, you are going to need to add about 1/4'' seam allowence. You can do this by measureing that much from each end about 2 inches apart. You'll end up with a slightly bigger pattern, but this will allow you room to sew together and hem.

Congrats! You've finished, what I believe to be, the hardest part! YAY!

      My pattern:

      2. Cut out dress pieces

Materials needed : Fabric, Pattern, Scissors, Pins, Pen/Pencil

Lay your fabric out and pin the pattern to it and cut out. Repeat 4 times!
Now you have your lovely dress pieces.

      3. Finish Edges

Materials needed : Dress Pieces, Sewing Machine (serger?)

I don't have a serger, so to finish my edges I did a zigzag stitch along the edge. This will stop fraying. Yaay~ If you have a serger (Lucky! XD), go ahead and finish the edges that way. Repeat on ALL pieces.
You should end up with this :

      4. Cut Back open

Materials needed : ONE dress piece, Scissors.

Take ONE (only ONE, NOT more) piece and fold it over. Cut down the middle, like in the picture. This will give you a space to have your laceup back. (Without it, how would you get your dress on your dollie?)
      LIke so :

      Finish the cut edge!

      5. Hem Over Edges :

Materials : Sewing Machine, V cut Dress piece, pins

Sew your V cut in over so it dosn't fray and looks clean. You can do this by folding it over and sewing it with a straight stitch.
      Like so...

      (Continued Next Post)

    2. (cont. From above!)

      6. Adding Gromets/Eyelits

      Materials : Pen/Pencil, V cut Dress Piece, Gromets/Eyelits

Mark where you want your eyelits to be placed. I used 5 on each side, equally placed. Set them up like this :

      7. Set Gromets/Eyelits

      Materials : V cut Dress Piece, Gromets/Eyelits, Gromets/Eyelits Setter

Set your Eyelits/Gromets in thier spaces that you marked in the above set of directions. ^_^ What I did was cut a TINY TINY hole, fit the gromet/eyelit in, and smash it with my setter. =P You'll end up with this.

      8. Sew Dress Pieces together

Materials : Dress Pieces, Sewing Maching, Pins

Set the V cut Piece (now with grommets/eyelits. X3) goodside to goodside another piece. Pin together, then sew them together, using 1/4 inch as your seamline (Remember? Thats what you added to the patern =D).

(for some reason this pic won't link, just click it to open x.x Sorry!)

Add the next piece (TO THE PIECE YOU JUST SEWED ON, NOT THE V CUT PIECE) and repeat the sewing thing. Add the next, and then the next, but DO NOT sew the last piece to the V cut piece. You should have once side of the V cup piece still unsewed.
      Like this:

      9. Add front imbellishment

Materials : Dress Pieces, Pins, Sewing Machine

Take the sides you want to have Imbellishment on (like the zigzag in my beginning example) and pin them down like so. This is done on the INSIDE (the pinning) so the sewn pieces stay flat while you add the imbellishment. Like so :

Sew along those edges you pinned down, like this. (using whatever stitch you want, my sewing machine is old and I did this dress quick so I just used a large Straight stitch)

It should give you pretty lines running down the edges, and help the dress lay flat on the doll.
Here are some different views, to help you who are visual, like me. =3
      Inside:

      Outside:

Repeat on other dress piece. Now you have 2 pretty lines~ =D
      [IMG]

      10. Finish sewing together

Materials Needed : Sewing Machine, Dress Piece

Finished sewing together! Just like the title showed. XD Now your dress is starting to take form~~
      [IMG]

      (CONT. BELOW)

    3. (CONT. FROM ABOVE)

      11. Make Bottom Circley and Round X3

Materials Needed : Dress Pieces, Scissors =D

If you look closely, you'll notice that the bottom of your dress is all... squarish. Trim it so it looks like a circle. The pointy parts should be cut off and made rounder.

      12. Finish Edges of Bottom

Materials Needed : Sewing Machine, Dress Pieces

Ooookay, finish the edges to stop fraying of the bottom (zigzag or serge the ends). Yay! No fray~
      [IMG]

      13. Finish Edges (again?)

Materials Needed : Sewing Machine, Dress Pieces, Pins

Yup, fold the ends over and sew with a straight stich. =D It's easy, and don't worry, you're almost done!! ^_^ Pin, and sew. X3
      [IMG]

      14. Add Lace/Trim to Bottom

Materials Needed : Sewing Machine, Dress, Lace/Trim

Pin your lace/trim to the bottom of the dress, and sew on with a straight stitch. Now you've got a pretty lacey bottom. <3 Looks lovely, neh? X3
      [IMG]

      (CONT BELOW)

    4. (CONT FROM ABOVE)

      15. Finish the Top

Materials Needed : Dress, Sewing Machine, Pins

Flod over and pin the top of the dress, and sewin using a straight stitch. =D

(Can't get pic to work again, please click link. >_<; )

OPTIONAL : You can add lace here too, I just didn't have any small enough to add when I was doing this tutorial. X3

      16. FINISHED!

You're done! Yaaay!~~ Now you just need to lace up the back with ribbon, shove on a doll, and you're done. <3 Hehe.

      See? Not that hard! ^_^

NOTE : If you are making this for a busty female doll, you may need to add Darts (thanks for the word, Akkhima) It's like, when you pinch little triangle places and sew them so it gets a little tighter on the top. I don't have any females, so it's hard for me to explain and stuff. x_x Sorry!
If I do get my hands on a female body, I'll be sure to edit it with pics on how to do it. It may be a while though. x_x

I hope this helped a few people make cute little dresses for thier dollies. <3

      -------

OH! OH! IF YOU MADE A DRESS USING THIS, I'D LOVE TO SEE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE IN THE END! =D PLEASE, PLEASE POST PICS. :aheartbea

    5. Those Skrinches are called Darts!

And, it looks like it would work really well. Can we see how the lacing in the back looks? I'm curious as to how close together it gets, since you only added seam allowance, no ease.

    6. Ah! Thank you! XD I'm not a professional, so I don't know all these things. x.x I'll change it! Thanks. X3

These are the best pics I have of the back as of right now. I can take some later, if you'd like. It's kind of hard to tell from the pics. x.x

I can always get my dresses on/off very well, and the grommets and such didn't fall out. It fits close to the body too. :)

    7. OMGG i love this tutorial!!! Macabee will have a dress too!! XDDD

wow but I can't add grommets ;__; i don't have a setter. guh....maybe i'll do what I did with my corset and try it..wow i reallty love this pattern!! I think I see a carebear dressing in order! XDD

    8. Haha! Thanks, and you're welcome. <33

I wanna see Macabee in a dress! :fangirl: =DDD! Carebears, too. Even better. ^_^

I don't think the setters aren't too expensive... My mom bought my mine at some local craft store. o.o It's all spriny and fun. XD Lol.

    9. You can get sets of grommets at sewing stores that include this little hand setter rod that you hit with a hammer.

    10. Tailormouse, Saint, AnnekeKarel, Boule de Poils, Himitsu and LexehAnn, thank you! ^_^

You're welcome for posting the pattern, and if you make a dress, please post pics! X3

      Happy sewing~ *dances*

    11. +love to Blue Eternity!

I was home sick today, so I figured making this would perk me up ;D
This was a lot of fun to make, thanks so much <3

Excuse my "Hybrid" XD; Aiden's head is off being painted :P

      DoC Boy Body ;D

      EVERYONE. MAKE THIS NOOOOOOWWWWWW :aheartbea

    12. Omg! It's so cool~~ You're welcome, I'm glad it perked you up! It's so strange, everyone seems to be sick. @_@ Today in school, we didn't learn anything in any of my classes. There was about 1/2-1/3 of the people gone in each class. x_x 'Tis the season! I hope I don't get the flu... ;__;

I love how you did the X stitch! Is that all by hand? I would loose attention. Lol. XD It looks sooo good. <3 That fabirc is pretty too, I always seem to be unable to find the perfect fabric. Lol.

    13. Aww thanks ;D
Nah, the X Stitch is a stitch my machine has n___n

    14. Aww! I might next week. X3 I have it off from school (I only have midterm exams. ^_^) so I'll actually have time. =D

I've got to draft a pattern though, unless I use the one here on DoA. I altered the pattern to make skinny jeans for my boy. =P He needs one anyways, so you can all probably expect one soon! =D

    15. I made a dress for Jinsung this morning n__n
I still have to go out and buy some ribbon & grommets, but here is is almost finished.
ANYWAY the tutorial was quite helpful. <3

    16. x3 Here's the finished product!
I actually might add another set of grommets.. also please excuse the horrible photos. XD

      [IMG][IMG]

    17. Well, I have my altered pattern. I am going to make copies of it as I dont want to destroy my only copy with pins. The fun will begin this evening!

It seems the hobby/craft/fabric stores around here do not belive in small grommets so I have to mod it further. I could wait and order stuff online, but I am not good at waiting and I like being different. I was also thining of making a petticoat to go under it, but with my altered hemline I am not sure how I can make one that works and still looks decent. Too much math for one night for me. *_*

I will be testing out my alterations with broadcloth first before I dare cut into the more expencive fabric. I will post again (hopfuly with pictures) when I can get it all to work. :)

    18. I think I am going to have to do even more altering at this point.

Has anyone tried the basic patten on a girl???

I can't get the darn thing over her hips or shoulder, even with cutting a slit for the opening from the neckline to the waist, I had to extend it halfway down her bum. The skirt part turned out wonderful, its just her big resin boobies are making things odd up top. I can see what I am trying to do, but not how to do it and I think it may make me lose my mind *_*

    19. Eeek... o_o I'm not sure, I'm so sorry! x__x The only dresses I have made for females were for myself, and my body is squishy unlike resin. I'm so sorry I can't help! ;__;

      I will be getting a female doll soon (probably a SoulDoll Miryu), probably in about 1-2 weeks or so. I can try my best to work something out then, and I'll post what I figured out here. So sorry I can't help right away! ;__;

    20. I Made one from your pattern! XD For my Soom Uyopo! i used 3 pannels and slightly stretchy marerial! Dagmire thanks you greatly for ehr Great dress!

It's also un-hemmed because i'm lazy and did it all by hand! stupid hand sewing!

    21. It looks great! <3 Using 3 panels is a good idea if you're hand sewing, less to actually do. Lol Hand sewing always hurts my hands... o_o;

    22. It fit my girl perfectly once I tied the back up. And she has a bust, so hopefully other people will be able to get theirs to work.

I handsewed it because I was too lazy to use my machine. o.0;; I'm not very good with sewing machines. I'm going to walmart today though, to see if I can get some eyelits/gromets for a proper dress.

    23. I know! It makes me very sad. =( I must load up on fabric soon so I have enough to pull me over after the close so I can get to Joanns sometime. x_x;

Ahh! Using hook and eye clasps is a good idea if you don't have gromets... <3 I was lucky enough that my mom found some and bought them for me. o_o Thank you, Mom. X3 She's so kind and picks up little things for my dolls and me. ^___^

Ooo~ :aheartbea It looks great! Is that a DOC boy? (Ooo, a Too? I love me some Toos. X3)

Great job on it. ^__^ It looks really good. =D

    24. Hehe no it's a DOC girl..Bee-A. I need to get a Too still :sweat

    25. I made one for my MNF girl, Angel. She's a DoC Bee-A...so she doesn't have very big boobs  It fits her nicely with it all laced up

    26. I made another dress, and I reallyreally love it n_____n
No pictures on a doll since she's not here yet :P BUT Ill update when she comes <3

And a rose necklace to match ;D
      [IMG]

    27. Thanks for posting such a cute and simple dress! (Runs off to find some fabric scraps to try it out).

Perhaps for those (like me) who don't have any of those little grommets, loopy trim (eg scalloped lace) could be sewn along the edges of the back opening - then you could lace the ribbon through the loops on the edge of the trim. (I've got a human-sized dress that laces up that way).

EDIT: It's finished - here are some pictures. The photo doesn't show it well, but I've just laced the ribbon through some lace sewn along the edges of the opening at the back.

    28. ^_^ Thanks for the eyelets method. Not going to dress my only male doll into a dress, but the eyelets gave me an idea for his outfit that I'm attempting to finish. Do the eyelets come in different sizes? I see that they are colored differently.

    29. I tried it and I love the result! The doll it is for will arrive this week and I am going to post a pic of her in it when she does, but until this here is the dress:
It is YoSD size and I can't wait to try it on her. ^_^

    30. [IMG]
      I love this pattern! :whee:

    31. I tried to make the dress out of cotton before digging into the more expensive fabrics. But it didn't look right as a dress on my chesty Sooah. (I imagine something with stretch would work better). But I shortened the Hem and it turned into a great skirt.

    32. I adjusted mine to fit my girl n____n I made it way to high but its allll good now n___n
It works fine on her bust without darts but i think its cause of the lace ;D

MNF Soo big busted body ;D

    33. You're welcome, everyone! =) I'm glad it's helpfull~
Aww, don't worry! I'm planning to make another tutorial, maybe for a skirt (Pleated and/or circle) and maybe one for some simple pants or jeans. ^^; And maybe a Kimono... I've just got to get my pattern together and take pics while I sew. >_< I need more free time. *sigh*

Look for them within the next months or something though. ^^ I know it's a while to wait, but I don't get much free sewing time. (Witch stinks, because I can't help people with tutorials AND I have to buy all my kids stuff. x_x lol But the stuff I get is nice, so I'm not complaining much. XD)

    34. got around to making it, and it fit fantastically, but i didnt want the lacing in the back not to show at all, so i took it in some in the back to make the v really pronounced. was amazingly simple! love it and now all my friends want therir own versions. ;)

thanks so much for the pattern!

    35. To the already made dress :3 I made the top WAY too long (it covered her poor face XD;) so I had to cut it down :P Ah, and to get the dress on her I have to take her arms off, because her dress is fitted and she has a VERY curvy waist, so nothing goes over it XD;

    36. I'm pretty sure you could get around that problem by making the opening on the back extend down a bit further.

    37. If I did that any more, Id have her bum showing XD;
Maybe if youre using a stretchier fabric than I am itl work, because my fabric has NO stretch, at all.

    38. Heh. Yeah, stretch fabric sounds like the way to go :)

I was thinking of putting a zip in the side so that the lacing doesn't have to be undone everytime it's taken on and off - so something like that would work too (although then it stops being such a simple dress to make)

    39. Well, my husband ended up making this dress for me, lol. I didn't like the middle, so I opted for a ribbon around the waist. We also did velcro in the back instead of the ribbon lacing. Here are some (poor quality) pictures of the front and back:

It was very challenging for me, so I gave up. My husband finished it in no time, however. :P

    40. oooh, this is wonderful!!! I'm so making this after my son goes to bed!!! How has the whole dart thing worked out for us girl girly owners?

    41. well, it's not very flashy, but it's the first thing i've ever made for my doll :D (or period, for that matter). i couldnt find any small enough eyelets, so i used clear snaps and sewed some small buttons over them ><

and yeah...i havent posted here in AGES, but i was looking for something easy to start sewing with. i ran into all sorts of problems XD the biggest one being that sharmin is almost 2x as wide as she is thick. so i had to make the side pieces much thinner.

thanks a lot for the tutorial :D it was a fun project!

    42. =D
      practically encouraging my mom as well as strangers to call him a girl/question his gender ^^;

    43. wow i never got around to posting the dress i made for my little boy ^^;
i altered the pattern a bit and added a few things, made him a matching handbag and headdress and called him my little lolita XDDD *shot*
      [IMG]

    44. i altered the pattern for a long dress and it worked really well. once my friend posts some pix up of her doll wearing it, ill post some up over here too. velvet works really well, draping nicely over the figure.

    45. Finished! For now, at least. I'm still considering adding some ribbon trim around the bottom, above the lace. It's all hand-sewn, and the first actual sewing project I've tried in a long time. So despite the messy stitches and uneven upper hem (more ribbon/trim to the rescue! XD), I'm satisfied with it for now. I have no dolls of this size yet, so for now it's displayed on a sculpey half-torso with the measurements of an SD girl, mounted on a plastic pipe held upright by two water bottles. ^^;

Sorry if the pictures are too big.... The front, side, and back of the skirt, in that order:

    46. Ok, so I tried this pattern out on my MNF Shushu, Choie. I think next time I make it I may...make the back piece a little widder, but all in all it worked pretty well. (Oh, I didnt take these photo's, they were taken at a meet)

    47. I really like the green skirt above. Just mentally picturing it with a little bustle...
I made the dress for a couple different dolls and it was so simple and ncely fitted. I cheated a little and used the hook half of hook and eye closures instead of grommets, so I just lace up the back. It worked quite well.

    48. I'm gonna tweak the pattern a bit for when I make another since the back was very gappy on my girl but this is fantastic ^^ You can't see it but I actually left the botttom square, it's a little quirky that way XD

      ^^ <3 this pattern!

    50. Mommy and I finished Ame's dress (chiwoo) I'll get some photos later. But we used the same pattern but we left the back as a V and put lace straps on with the lace trimming the V it worked really well!

    51. Has anyone successfully tackled the problem with the hips being too wide to go through? I really want to make this dress for my doll, but I'm scared that when it's finished I won't be able to put it on her...also, the fabric I want to use isn't really stretchy at all, so it wouldn't be able to stretch over her hips.....any solutions that anyone has thought of?

    52. The best solution I can think of is to make the center back cut about 3/4" longer (a smidge longer than 1/2 the difference between the waist and hip measurements of your doll).

If you don't want her butt showing, (I wouldn't) make a little hemmed triangle that will fit under the cut from the waist down. Finish it neatly and sew it to to inside of the dress on one side of the cut after you have put in the eyelets. Position it so side of the triangle is even with the waist of the dress.

You will be able to open the dress enough to let your doll's hips through and when the dress is laced there will be an extension that covers her bottom.

I hope I have described this well enough.

    53. I got a vision of the dress right after I saw the finished thing.
Now I'm making a dress for a Luts Delf boy from my old dress. (A precious, pretty expensive dress too, but it was getting too small for me and I didn't wanna throw it away or sell it. YAY for doll clothes! Stay with your memories!)
And now I'v been doing my version for the last... six hours or so.
It sounds easy, but even the most easy version should take when carefully and neatly made atleast three hours or so
And I'm doing some REALLY RAD stuff here, using corset hooks for the lace etc. I'll edit this post and add some pictures after I'm done. Which will be somewhere today I think. I just have to make it ready. It already looks gorgeus even thou the upper and lower part are separate :sweat

    54. My gosurori is ready! Or atleast I THINK SO. It might get something fancy to it someday, but for now I'm satisfied. Made from an old dress of mine too precious to be thrown away or sold~
I give you Little Blue JR.

    55. And as you can see, the dress had been used in some of more.. Extreme things. It had white paint on it and some other weird stuff in it... We did a photoshoot with it w/ my friend... I'll find a picture of that waaait...

There was a ribbon in the back, I might make something out of that... A pretty ribbon of black and violet.. /SIGH
But I kind of tried to stay loyal to the blueness of that modified version of the dress. I liked it. I hate growing up :...(

    56. To Elzariel: I love your original dress, and the one you made out of it! The paint specks add character and I love that 'tail'! ^______^ Post up pictures of it on your Dollfie as soon as you can!

I made a dress!:dance I used left over peices from my kimono and I love that lace! The lace that I've used at the back which the ribbon laces through, is falling apart, so I will put in some small eyelets instead, when I work out the best way to set them. Please excuse the badly sewn lines, I'm just getting used to a new (to me) sewing machine, and I haven't sewn in years.

I'm not sure about the measurements either, I won't find out if it's ok untill December. I've just gotten some more acurate numbers, so I will make another dress, different version, and compair the two dresses to see if I need to make any more changes to this one.

      I love this lace! ^_______^

I forgot to mention that this is for a Dollzone 44cm Female Feilian Dollfie, but I based the measuements off MSD statistics I found.

    57. Hi! I used your tutorial to make a dress for my doll yet-to-come Lucifer. My mom helped me out. ^^

thank you! love it if you made some more tutorials. :)

    58. My dolly finally got here and I put her in that green skirt I made earlier right away! XD I had embellished it some more over the summer, and I was really glad to see it fit after all... This is a really great pattern. Sorry for the bad picture as far as seeing the skirt itself goes-- lighting was atrocious at my house and this is the only one that turned out alright.
