I love taking photos of flowers! For example, I took this photo at the Cherry Blossom Festival in 2011. This was taken with the kit lens, since I did not have the other lens at the time.

Where did you purchase your DSLR? Online
Did you purchase your DSLR with the kit lens? No
If you have other lenses, what are they? 17-55mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8, and a telephoto lens
What is your favorite lens to use with your DSLR when photographing your dolls and why? Usually I love using the 17-55 because there's enough range for it to be a wide angle and has a good DoF for zoomed-in shots. I haven't shot my dolls recently, but I'd definitely use the 50mm because of the excellent aperture and also it picks up details quite well (despite being slightly fiddly at times with the focus).

What other type of photography do you shoot with your DSLR? Post examples or links, if possible. I shoot mainly fashion photography, so it's all about connecting with the model and surroundings. My deviant art: http://somnolentimages.deviantart.com/ (theres not too much photography on there, but it gives you an idea!) my flickr is reserved for doll-shoots only, but I haven't done any for a long time. When my new doll arrives I'll definitely arrange a few shoots of her.

On crop it was my 35mm; it was small, fast and allowed me to come near my dolls and was perfect for every size (50mm was already a bit too much for anything smaller than SD).
Nowadays it's my 100mm. It's ridiculously sharp, fast, makes lovely Bokeh and is, coupled with being a Macro, a nice lenght for doll photography. A normal 100mm would be waaay too long though.

What other type of photography do you shoot with your DSLR? Post examples or links, if possible.
Cosplay, Macro, other figures, anything that floats my boat.

If you love photography it´s nothing false on spending a lot of money on your camera (and don´t regret. I can´t live without my camera). You will know the diffrence when you used a cheap camera and than throw a lot of money for one (it have not to been a fullframe or a brand new camera. The D300 is a nice choice to (it´s a crop)) or an other company. I´m stick with Nikon because i love how they build, how they feel, how they are to use and their colors of the pictures but hate that nikon is always more expensiv than other companys.

11. Have you taken photography classes/training before? Yup! I used to major in photography and got through all the photography courses before realizing that photography had lost it's joy due to a rotten professor (who was like the only photography teacher in the entire school. There's a long story there that I won't get into.) So I've taken Photo 1 and 2, Portrait photography, studio photography, and digital photography. I also really love shooting film although I don't have access to a dark room anymore so I can't develop anything beyond black and white film anymore. I have 3 SLR's that are all Canon, a rangefinder, and a holga.

31. I've completely updated my kit since I replied in 2010.

What brand is your DSLR?
Canon

What is the model?

60D

When did you purchase your DSLR?
2011

What was the price?
$999 body, something like $5200 for the lenses I have right now

Where did you purchase your DSLR?
B&H Photo, the only place I buy from.

Did you purchase your DSLR with the kit lens?
Yes, but only because it was $50 more and the 17-55/2.8 I wanted was out of stock. When I got the 17-55/2.8, I sold the 18-55 kit lens.

If you have other lenses, what are they?
100/2.8L macro, 70-300/4-5.6L, 60/2.8 macro, 17-55/2.8, 10-22/4-5.6

What is your favorite lens to use with your DSLR when photographing your dolls and why?
100/2.8L macro, because it's tack sharp wide open, has image stabilization which is great for handheld outdoor shots, and its wide 9-blade aperture renders blur backgrounds wonderfully.

What other type of photography do you shoot with your DSLR? Post examples or links, if possible.
Some landscape, birds, the family, things that are rusty.

CANON

What is the model?
t2i Rebel aka EOS 550D

When did you purchase your DSLR?
~ two years ago as an upgrade from my EOS 300D

What was the price?
~ 700USD with a very good discount ticket

Where did you purchase your DSLR?
via Amazon.com, but only due to the discount offer at the time. I usually head for B&H.com for most of my camera supplies. I can't recommend them highly enough, their shipping is always fast, efficient, and very secure. If you live on the East Coast, that's where their main store is located, and they are very snappy with orders.

Did you purchase your DSLR with the kit lens?
Yes, 18-55mm

If you have other lenses, what are they?
I almost never use my kit lens anymore. I have a nifty-fifty 50mm 1.8 prime Canon, and a 17-55mm 2.8 zoom Canon. The prime is great for almost all needs, especially portraiture or still life. Super sharp and very low-light friendly.

When it comes to larger groups, the 17-55 has the flexibility to give me a wide range of options--wide to get everything, a bit of zoom to pull in close. I call it my 'gentleman lens' because its very good at doing exactly what you ask of it, and pretty useful in all situations. (The Bokeh is also pretty nice).

What is your favorite lens to use with your DSLR when photographing "your" dolls and why?
With dolls, almost exclusively the 50mm. It's tack-sharp when well focused, and the wider aperture option works great with low lighting and artistic use of depth of field choices. It's cheap, as far as lenses go, and good for beginners too. The 17-55mm comes out too, but it's a little heavier and has a longer focal distance. The choices of focal-length plus the wide aperture though allow me a little more flexibility, but it's not as sharp as the prime.

What other type of photography do you shoot with your DSLR? Post examples or links, if possible.
I shoot cosplay, convention, and still life photography. You can see some examples of them all at my tumblr.

How do you classify yourself in photography: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
I like to call myself enthusiastic Intermediate. I've been semi-seriously pursuing photography for around 10 years, more seriously in the last 3.

Have you taken photography classes/training before?
Yes. I had the opportunity for black and white film classes in high school and college, developing film by hand using full manual cameras. It gave me a great foundation to understand how to best use a digital camera to obtain the look I am trying to achieve. I work full-manual 99% of the time when working with my camera because of it. Taking even a casual class can give you the information and critique to push yourself a little better. Alternatively, Cambridge in Color is a great web resource for learning the nitty gritty of how your Camera works, photography basics, and how to deal with different photography situations.

36. What brand is your DSLR? Canon.
What is the model? EOS Rebel T3i.
When did you purchase your DSLR? A few months ago.
What was the price? Around £300.
Where did you purchase your DSLR? Brand new from a shop's Ebay branch.
Did you purchase your DSLR with the kit lens? No.
If you have other lenses, what are they? Canon 50mm f1.8.
What is your favourite lens to use with your DSLR when photographing your dolls and why? The 50mm. It captures detail well and provides good depth of field. It also works well for real life shots, although you do have to keep a distance from your subjects with it.
What other type of photography do you shoot with your DSLR? Nature and portraits of people mostly. This Summer I'm going to make a giant family album full of all the members of my family I can find. It'll be great!
How do you classify yourself in photography: Average with a point and shoot, beginner with a DSLR.
Have you taken photography classes/training before? No. I'm a novice with a camera that my skills don't warrant - but I'm learning, from trial and error.

December 2012

What was the price?

$800 w/ lens

Where did you purchase your DSLR?
local photography store

Did you purchase your DSLR with the kit lens?
Yes and no. I bought the kit but upgraded to the DA 18-55mm WR lens since it had better ratings.

If you have other lenses, what are they?
50 mm f1.2
100-200mm f4
extension tube (makes any lens macro but full manual)
telephoto tube (makes any lens more telephoto)
(Dad's old lens, and the main reason I bought a Pentax. More good lenses to play with right away!)

What is your favorite lens to use with your DSLR when photographing your dolls and why?
50mm/f1.2, hands down. The bokeh is phenomenal at the low f stops; I've had a SD's nose in focus and the ear out of focus!

Lots of landscapes, cosplay and macro of pretty much anything.

How do you classify yourself in photography:

Intermediate

Have you taken photography classes/training before?
Yes. I took a few class on camera handling, composure and the relation of ISO, shutter speed and f stop. I've also done tons of reading both from books and online. "Understanding Exposure" was a great book to read once I knew how to handle my camera and wanted to push it that little bit further.

Also no clue

Did you purchase your DSLR with the kit lens?
Don't know. Both lenses he has I don't like.

If you have other lenses, what are they?
Ah, now there's the good question. I have a pile of vintage Nikon (manual everything) with beautiful beautiful old NIkon prime lenses. So I just the other day finally got the gumption to remove the metering prong (used for lenses with Nikon F and Nikkormat cameras - two screws, no worries) from my 105mm/2.5 portrait lense.

What is your favorite lens to use with your DSLR when photographing your dolls and why?
That 105 lense. going as it does down to f2.5, can have beautiful depth of field effects and it takes astounding pictures. So I have to shoot in manual mode. I'm much better in manual anyway.

What other type of photography do you shoot with your DSLR? Post examples or links, if possible.
I don't use for anything but doll photography at the moment (only had the use of it for a little while).

42. What brand is your DSLR?

Pentax

What is the model?

I've shot with an *ist DL, a K-7, a K-x and now a K-30. Before that I shot with a number of Pentax film cameras. Still do actually. I also shoot film, not just digital.

When did you purchase your DSLR?

I've had several. So various times....

What was the price?

Various prices, though under $500 every time.

Where did you purchase your DSLR?

My lastest one came from Amazon.

Did you purchase your DSLR with the kit lens?

Yes, I got the WR kit lenses this time so I would have a weather resistant lenses to go with my weather resistant DSLR. I bought the 18-55 and the 50-200.

If you have other lenses, what are they?

I have too many to list here, sorry. Compatible Pentax lenses go back for decades and I have lenses in the double digits. It's one of the reasons I shoot Pentax. You can build up a pretty big kit for very little money if you're willing to shoot MF a lot. I have both manual and auto focus lenses. More MF than AF becuase the AF ones cost a fair bit more and most of the higher end AF ones are out of my budget range, but there are decent used AF lenses out there too that aren't too expensive.

What is your favorite lens to use with your DSLR when photographing your dolls and why?

It depends upon the needs of the job but usually with dolls it's something in the 18-135mm range.

What other type of photography do you shoot with your DSLR?

I'm mostly a portrait person but I also do wildlife, landscapes, whatever.

How do you classify yourself in photography:

I'm a professional photographer. It's how I make my living.

Have you taken photography classes/training before?

Yes.

43. I'm considering my mirrorless setup a dslr for this thread, I hope I'm not wrong (if I'm, just tell). I'm listing my last dslr, the camera that I used more in my life, to be sure to be on topic.
(I own much more stuff that this, but this is my favourite and most used camera).

1. What brand is your DSLR? Olympus / Fujifilm
2. What is the model? E-M5 / S5 Pro
3. When did you purchase your DSLR? First one? 9 years ago. Last one? Half a year ago.
4. What was the price? All camera I bought in my life were in the 500-1000€ range. No more, no less.
5. Where did you purchase your DSLR? In chronological order Ebay, some online stores, the shop I work and a nice little shop in a small town half an hour from my home
6. Did you purchase your DSLR with the kit lens? Almost every camera I bought came with the stock lens, but I never loved them...
