Wow, that is a biiig dragon! I ordered a basic Ehecatl set. I'm really looking forward to painting him when spring rolls around.
Oh my goodness, he’s absolutely beautiful! The cat standing next to him for comparison is crazy I can only imagine how heavy he is to hold/pose. But the sculpting on him looks so, so stunning— I hope you’ll share some videos/pictures once he’s painted!!!
@Cryptid thank you for sharing the unboxing vid. Seeing your cat with him really shows how big he is for a 1/4th scale beast. I have a lot of bigger scaled dolls, so I hope that makes his weight and size easier to deal with. I look forward to seeing how to style yours. My black dragon is going to be on layaway a while more, so seeing other people's dragons is a good tide me over.
Oh my lawd he comin. I love him so much and he's exactly the size I hoped he would be. I am so, so glad that a. I decided to get one (because otherwise I would be weeping in jealousy) and b. that I ordered one already painted because I do not envy you the process of unstringing and restringing him (when you do get around to that I would *love* some more insight into how he's strung). Thank you so much for the review and all the angles, I wish BJD companies themselves put out such detailed overviews. I am going to rewatch it on the regular until mine arrives. I'm also realising that I should probably start figuring out my stand/rest/environment for my dragon and how I can make semi-realistic looking rocks that are also soft enough not to worry me.
@Crissaegrim You are right those of us waiting should start planning how to display/store these dragons... I'm thinking cat bed. XD
@Crissaegrim I'm still waiting on my Griffin to come in, but if he's strung anything like Dream Valley's Flo or Adela (their smaller dragons) it's not too unusual! Just very tight as is DV's standard lmao. The jointed claws are probably a lot like Phoenix. I'll compare them to my Phoenix when he comes in. As for rocks, look up how people make them for miniatures and dioramas! I don't quite remember the substance people make them out of, but it's a paste you can sculpt and then paint. I've also seen people use softer clays, like cosclay or foam clay, if you want something lightweight, a little flexible, and won't damage the resin.
Re: the weight: yeah, I find him kinda exhausting to mess with too much. I'll get used to it, but for now, it's a big difference between him and all my other dolls, even my deertaur boy. @Crissaegrim I admit I plan to not unstring him, because the thought honestly kinda terrifies me. (And I totally expect wear where those plates overlap, so..) He's going to remain mostly white, with streaks and drybrushed areas of gold, with some luster dust and gold flake applied. (I'm definitely experimenting on a spare head first to learn applying the gold flake bits.) If anybody plans on dyeing theirs...oh boy, good luck. For rocks, I'm wondering about using the plaster mixes for railroad scenes, but my big concern with faux rocks versus real rocks is the ability to support the weight. @Tippetarius I've got him in a Billy bookcase at the moment, though before I got his wings I was also able to get him standing in my corner curio case. The important thing for me in either case, besides the necessary dimensions, is doors, because I fear cat nibbling on his sharp bits. billybookcase by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr
@Cryptid how delightful! Thank you so much for the video! I also plan to leave mine strung when I paint him. I have done that will a few other dolls before and liked the result. In general I'm planning to just add some detail paint, low coverage type painting anyway. OMG tho after watching that video I'm so dang pumped! My husband collects action figures and I can see this being a ton of fun to set up not just with my collection of bjds but with his super heros, my kids King Kong figure, etc. Ahhh I hope not too much more wait for the red dragons to ship!
I think my plan is solid base of cardboard covered with styrofoam, styrofoam to block in larger rocks and then covered with this weird superlight air dry clay I have some of (but will need to buy more in appropriate colours) which even when dry is kind of bouncy and slightly soft. I've used it for shoe lasts before.
Looking at him, I did have the thought of 'man, he'd look GOOD with Mythic Legions figures.' And super impressive with 3 1/4" scale ones. I'm thinking that once my home renno is done and I can get him painted and my collections back out, I may do a lineup with him and my other toy dragons.
OMFG you are a genius! I didn't even think about using him with my action figures, let alone my Mythic Legion figures. He'd be epic next to those, and about the same level of pointiness to some of em. lol He'd be down right massive next to a 3 1/4" scale figures. Oh oh I wonder if he could hold DnD style table top minis in his nice grippy hands, I bit those could make nice bite sized treats for these dragons. Thank you so much my brain is now planning all kinds of fun with my future dragon and other toys.
My attempt to get him into a napping pose; if there's a trick to getting tighter curl in his midsection, I haven't found it yet. What I've discovered by messing with him that's very important, though, is how much weight the wings add to make him forward-heavy. If you look at the quadruped with wings pic, you'll see that the back legs are locked into a tight bend at the knee; this is to provide stability. Otherwise he wants to slide forward and down into a sploot. nap by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr
I am wriggling in delight, so so pleased I buckled and also got the quarter scale Thank you so much for the posing pictures I will also spray/blush fully strung, have some ideas on what I will be doing which won't solidify until I get him, and whether the weather will behave by the time he gets here. I ordered during the extension of the preorder (due to the popularity). Mine is going to be primarily a fantasy pet for my 1/3 bjds... and a prop for my smaller. My pukipuki are going to look hilarious with this one
As cute as the Lucia rider was, I'm kind of half-looking for ridiculously tiny BJD's so I can have a rider that makes him look utterly massive.
Granado makes a 1/12 size mature guy. https://www.doll-granado.com/product-page/male-body-15ascent I know there have been more but the ones I can think of are off-topic and 3d printed, like Asleep Eidolon's 1/12 add on.
Still no name for him yet, but I did finally start on adding color to my boy. So far this is just PearlEx mixed with Liquitex gloss sealant, with a few pieces of gold leaf added on. Tomorrow I think I'll be adding on more gold leaf and some paint to finish off the top before moving on to the underside. wing side 2 by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr wing side 1 by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr
Preview of the next doll: a chimera! I'm very eager to see more pics of her, and what kind of fullset they're planning. She's not the canine I keep hoping for, but that beastly look tempts me.
Lookit her! I'm going to need to mull over this one. I have no interest in the leg swap functionality myself, but I'll be curious to see other people's thoughts on it.
As much as I love chimera, I'm not in love with the undead bone tail. I do like how many joints it has, but if I was to buy her, I'd have to saw off those spurs and put a faux-fur sheath over the whole thing. Which is a bit tempting, I admit! The thing that will probably keep me from buying her, though, is the fact that she'd be more useful to me in 1/3 scale...
@Cryptid Did your dragon boy come with eyes or were they ones you had lying around? Either way, do you know what size eyes the 1/4 dragon takes. I haven't had any news on mine but it occurred to me that I might want to look for eyes ahead of time.
He came with eyes; for both the 1/6 and 1/4 scale dragons, it's 8 mm. I went ahead and bought new glass cabochon eyes off of Etsy, though, as I really don't like white sclera on dragons. redeye by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr redeye2 by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr
I wanted to show off his progress: dragonprogress1 by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr dragonprogress3 by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr wingspan by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr
Oh I LOVE him! He’s like a bone marble guy, looks really good in white resin too. Sooooorrt of starting to regret not getting one
chimera is so tempting, but I have to be strong. I told myself, no NEW bjds this year, I need to focus on bodies for my floating heads. But ooo she's fabulous. They keep making these incredible things and it doesn't help that for the detail and artistry, the prices are staggeringly reasonable.
Thank you for all the kind comments! He's been really fun to work on. This is definitely my struggle, along with the dragon (while amazing) also taking up a good chunk of the doll budget starting January 1st. But yeah, reminding myself of the same. I'm expecting to see the Maurren head in a month or two, which means body, eyes, wig...
That dragon is AMAZING, @Cryptid !!! So I was checking out what new dolls arrived for others and I realized I forgot to post Amal that arrived few months ago. I have not been doing much with her yet, as I don't have a "vision" for her style yet, but I love the mask and the tentacles are super fun! Spoiler: (dolly nudity warning)
Dream Valley shared a a picture of their next girl. Sina Visitor System She has two sets of arms which is super cool and I really love the leafy head and leg pieces.
HE'S DONE. 6 by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr More pics up on a project page, showing him as I went, with completed pics on my gallery. For the best view of him, though, I did a video showing him off in various poses at different angles:
@Feathered Shadows - Oh dear, another temptation. I wonder if green will be an option? I do hope those wings on her legs are removeable, though - I'd be so worried about breaking them. @Cryptid - Such a great idea for a white dragon - I especially like how the face turned out! Nice work!
I am soooo loving that new moth girl they are teasing, I just KNOW she will have to get ordered. And I am still waiting for the Lylia Mermaid girl! Dream Valley, what are you doing to my budget!! and doll cabinet!
@Sianserais I hope the leg pieces are removable too. I’d like to be able to put her in trousers occasionally. @tanjalalie Thanks for posting the photo, I get the Dream Valley hype they just do so many interesting dolls.
They’ve posted a video showing how to change out the moth girls arms. Her leg pieces are removable although they appear to snap on which makes me concerned about the risk of chipping the blushing. I’m really loving Dream valleys openness to modifying the way their bodies go together to make convenient minimally obtrusive swap out systems. I'm not a huge fan of the skull on her head wings so I might look into modding it into something a bit more suited for a moth fairy.
I was a little interested, but after watching the video I'm definitely intrigued. I like dolls with extra limbs, so the arm system is really cool. A blank might be a lot of fun to play with.
Oh dang! That arm system is unexpected! Very cool. The skull was an interesting choice for the headpiece
WOW! The ghost face moth girl is a new favorite for sure. The arm system and accessories make me want her even more. I chose a bad time to get back into the hobby. All my money is about to disappear into resin.
Oh I’m really liking how they did the painting on the moth parts. She looks really well proportioned too
/threads/dream-valley-new-limited-special-doll-ghost-moth-white-moss.883124/ So you've got about a month to decide
OOOOOOOOOOOH finally!! Hurraaayyyy!!! Thank you! Edited to add that she's been ordered , blank , in regular white resin, from Alice's. Now, this wait.......
Was giving my wolf boy, Cross, a mani/pedi and this pose he ended up in made me laugh. He looks like he's rolling around like an actual dog.
AWWW!!! This is so cute ! I have this wolf boy too, but he is very prone to scratches. I love this sculpt
Awwwww that's so cute, he's gotta get that ONE itchy spot. I haven't seen many Chaos around, which saddens me, I love the big ol ears.
Because I was asked, and I remembered seeing somebody mention a busted backplate somewhere (and of course now can't find the post), a video guide: Bonus: hescrem by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr "I'M IN A GLASS CASE OF EMOTION!"
I caved and preordered the new moth girl in Coco Brown (blank) through ACBJD and I'm so excited! But I've heard the wait times for Dream Valley are pretty long these days... Can anyone who's ordered from them recently share their experience with the wait times?
