Shopping Dream of Doll site?

Jul 31, 2016

    1. You know, that fact that there was no end sale is the sole remaining hope I may have that they are not gone for good yet. If their disappearance was due to financial reasons, they would have sold off their stuff for sure ? Or maybe I am just being too hopeful here.

Maybe it wasn't even them who put up that site but someone else ? Has anyone ever checked this, if possible ? One thing I am wondering about is since they are a Korean company you would think the Korean BJD community would have more information about their whereabouts, but I was not able to find anything, they seem as clueless as we :(. Or maybe my Korean friend's research wasn't extensive enough. DOD doesn't seem to have any social media contacts either ?

    2. I didn't think of that, but, for whoever did it, it was quite a lot of work since there were several of pages. I find this whole situation a bit puzzling :nowords: And maybe your friend wasn't able to find anything because there are no official information on what happened and why the company disappeared.

    3. Hey does anyone have any updates on this? You never miss something until it's gone...and now I'm missing Dream of Doll!!

    4. I don't, unfortunately :( Things look like they're still down and out for the count

    5. I'm so sad. I loved their work.

    6. what makes it worse is I want to buy this doll. but cant and then all of a sudden sompany say they have teh doll.

    7. I was filled with nostalgia and I came back here hoping for good news. My heart is still in two over this because DOD has been the company I loved first and foremost till the very end. Reading through this topic again made me think about what MIGHT have happened. (This is all just speculation, of course.)

[Part of me wants to believe that the representative of Dream of Doll, wanted to make it work. They kept their site up for a very long time after they halted all purchases. As they made the last of their dolls they probably wanted to pool together what was left and see what they could do with the remainders afterwards. The prospects after finishing might not have been good, so they closed up. Because they still kept up their site, still spoke to customers over email for several months after online-purchase-closing, then they suddenly stopped (most likely when all the paid dolls were finished), and the site eventually dissolved with no one paying to keep it up any longer.]

The more I think about it, their sales patterns that lead up to the last of their years probably hinted that DOD was not doing as well as people assumed, and as time passed, it wasn't getting better ( I mean yeah Ducan used to sell like hot cakes but a company can't depend on one doll to live). Back in the day when I ordered my first doll from them they were incredibly lively but also very firm with what they wanted to sell, and what they DIDN'T want to resell (an example being Elf Ducan, and Sha's fullset).

But all at once years later, suddenly they put up the fullsets of their old dolls, AND the Elf Ducan. But by then most of the people were already 'sleeping' on DOD, and either lacked interest in an older doll, or didn't even KNOW they had resold them (esp. elf Ducan). This might not be unusual to other companies, but for DOD to just suddenly shove them out there with no teaser, and no warning, it was weird. They attempted to put out dolls in white skin on basic dolls to attract the audience that wanted it (something they firmly said they wouldn't do many years before), but you could see from their sets that the production value was no longer there. They legit just put one of them on a box, atop a shelf/table, OTL.

Over the last few years they were active DOD had been on a decline, they didn't put out much, and they offered nothing really new. And it was probably because they didn't have enough funds for it. DOD may have been popular in 2006 and up, but times changed, and trends shifted. Recasts probably had a hand in their lack of sales; but the point is if there is nothing different to put on the table, you get left behind in the market. (And I assume recasts was not the only reason they sank; their newer dolls after Code No.2, didn't sell as well, me thinks. People barely spoke of them, posts of their new stuff were late, and owner pictures rarely surfaced. Even their two last dolls, have little to no owner pictures, or people even talking about them.)

To be honest, it doesn't surprise me that the Korean community knew nothing of their disappearance. Dream of Doll, whilst open with communication, was secretive. They literally only owned a warehouse under their name, no physical stores, no physical distributors. When people wanted to collect their dolls in person, one of their staff literally takes the boxed up doll from the factory to the client in some nearby cafe or train station (though this too was super rare, they only did it for people who happened to be visiting Korea, and had set up an appointment, o course).

And no, I am not blaming DOD. What else could they have done? They were an older company. I feel like if they managed to pull through into this day and age, they would have had more means to market themselves, like Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, Facebook, etc but in the time they were made, they could only depend on forums like DOD, Naver, and doll shows to spread the word of their product, they had nothing really, to promote themselves because other portals were not popular at the time, and it makes me sad. They had alot going for them, if only they had that one aha!-doll to push them through. The price to hold up a factory and keep even a few staff, is heavy. Most BJDs companies, as most know, only have a very small team.

The owner of DOD from what I could tell, loved doing what they did, so who knows, maybe this disappearance isn't forever.
They could have started out again under another company, heck, they could even be building up a new factory to make a return in the future when they are ready. The possibilities are endless, and I wish that one day, they'll come back.

Till then, the wait continues. With no notice from their side, we can still cling to a flicker of hope that maybe this is just a very long hiatus. :(

Sorry for the rambles, I have so many emotions for DOD, they were my save haven of BJDs, and even when I felt like I no longer liked them, I still would naturally, go to them first, browse their website for hours, and stare at their dolls.

    8. Was sort of mindlessly browsing other doll sites when a random doll really hit me. Didn't know why, then looked at him for a minute and realised he had the sort of lips and eyes that really reminded me of DOD and... oh... Hi there, emotional gut-punch :(
Part of me knows it's probably just properly over for the company, but I still hope something of it will resurface, even if it's just, like, the sculptor making a blog post about past designs or something. Or a lost stack of Code No. 2's resurfacing *ongoing regret there*

    9. Any updates on DOD's status? Even though I know it's almost impossible to know what happened to them. :( very sad. My first bjd is a DOD

    10. I'm very sad about what happened with DOD. I really wanted to order some of their sculpts, I can't even find them in the market here on DOA ;__; if someone knows what happend with DOD please give us the news u.u:(

    11. This is so sad! I always wanted a DOD... now time to time I try to open the old site to see if something changes in there :(

    12. I really want a doll from DOD but is impossible...

    13. Aww well not completely impossible! I've seen some DOD's being sold here on the marketplace, if you don't mind a used doll there are still some around :P

    14. Yep! I just got a Petsha and a tender shall secondhand! If you want it, put up a wtb, and keep an eye out, you never know what you'll find!

    15. *sigh*

Still mourning the loss of Dream of Doll.

Four of my dolls are DOT's so it sucks not being able to order directly from the company.

I LITERALLY ordered my Code 002 from them and recieved it in the mail month before they vanished in 2016.
"Hey! I got my doll, i'm so happy- aaaand they're gone."

It mega sucks because I was going to order their "Orrl" sculpt since apparently no one on DOA or the internet owns?? (Or at least no one has posted owner pics so I figured I'd be the first.)

      Dreams die hard I guess.

      Anyway, just ranting lol.

    16. Well I still looking for my grail DOT hahahaha, oh well RIP DOD I guess

    17. I love how this thread became an occasion check-in space for lamenting DOD! Lol
I managed to welcome a Bee-A into my collection recently, my first grail doll ever since I joined the hobby in 2003...
I still have a very small hope that DOD will come back

    18. To be honest, I have the same feeling but It's been 4 years since they closed

      • x 1
    19. I hope you find it! TT___TT

    20. I'm glad to hear you were able still get your doll afterall ♡

    21. Hmmm August 2016, more like 2.5 years but I get what you mean. I really hope they come back.

    22. thank you! I hope I'll find her soon, it's been very frustrating so far

    23. Is there an archive or gallery anywhere of Dream of Doll's production photos from their website? I used to stalk DoD's site back when I was still too poor to buy a BJD, and now that they're gone I feel the urge to revisit them. :(

    24. I would recommend trying the Wayback Machine/Internet Archive and looking up the old DoD website: Internet Archive: Digital Library of Free & Borrowable Books, Movies, Music & Wayback Machine
I use it often to look up the old Customhouse site. Not all the CH pictures were saved in the various crawls, but enough pictures are there to make it worth the searching time. Fingers crossed that the same is true for the DoD site crawls!

    25. Dang I miss DoD. That company has soo much potential. I had gottenmy frist 2 dolls form Dod. DOC Tender Zen and DOT Ducan. Soo sad

    26. Accidentally heard on the radio my favorite song that i’ve had nostalgic memories of DOD with! Miss them so much! At least a reason why they left. I’m sure it will give everyone peace and finally move on.. but I guess that’s the very reason why... they do not want to be forgotten...

    27. Bittersweet finding this thread has some newish posts from last year. I, too, fell in love with DOD around 2008. Sadly I couldn’t afford to start collecting my favorites (Shall, Petsha, Leya..) then, but in the last couple years I could. But they’ve been out of business with no sign of return. I don’t have access to the marketplace here since I don’t post as much.. I scrape auction sites occasionally but don’t have much luck. ;( Solidarity, fellow DOD mourners!

    28. Solidarity DOD mourners!
3 1/2 years later and I still miss the company so much :(
I used to see the odd DOD doll or accessories for sale in the marketplace or other websites.... but now they are incredibly rare to spot (and often wildly priced considering age/condition of some).

I guess I'll just have to extra love the ones I already have ❤

    29. It is a shame that they are gone without explaining what happened. It would be nice if they could, at least, see the emails.
I liked some of their models and fullsets. :I
I hope they come back someday doing their work or explaining why they stopped making dolls.

    30. I'm still so bummed DoD isn't around! They were one of the companies I was looking at a few years back when I was buying my first doll. I still wonder what happened to them, it's so strange for them to just disappear out of nowhere ;;

    31. The thing which makes me saddest, is my old DoD dolls have some yellowing from just being on a shelf for a long time. And when I noticed, I thought "well, I can always get a replacement if it gets too bad, because DoD will always be there" (they were still around at the time)

But now they're gone :( and my poor dolls no longer have that nice pink colour. I regret not taking more photos of them when they were new. And I really did think DoD would be around forever. They were so big when I was first getting into dolls, and reliable because they kept their main sculpts available forever.

(Also regret never getting an E-an doll. I miss DoD so much. Their sculpts had a lot more expression than I think they get credit for. Like, by shooting from above or below, the dolls had a different look. It's hard to find something that has the same kinda sculpting. I wish they could come back.)

    32. My first boy, Meilryu is a Sha sculpt. I also thought "if anything happens I know I can replace parts at the very least". Obviously this isnt the case anymore. As a result he may have to spend more time in his box to protect him.

    33. I'm in a similar boat, I thought that if anything happened to my Lahoo, I'd always be able to get replacement parts. He's fine for now, yellow too but I can live with that, but the day he breaks I'll cry </3

    34. In late 2015, I finally saved up enough money for the Tender Too twin set but some BJD group on Fb told me to hold off due to some shady behavior. Then they closed not long after in 2016 and I never got those dolls. It's partly why I faded from the hobby, I was so crushed. I worked my BUTT OFF for that money. I blew it all on a convention instead and bought figures to curb the issue.

I still want those dolls, even if it's just the heads. But I feel that finding them is rarer than DOD ever coming back. :'c I haven't found a sculpt I liked besides the twins so....who knows. I just wish they would have gave us some closure on what happened.

    35. considering they closed at the first half of 2016, you WOULDN'T have gotten those dolls even if you' d placed that order. companies don't just fold overnight, problems would be happening for at least 3-4 months or more before they called it quits. so, i say you dodged that bullet.

    36. They did actually fulfill the outstanding orders! I was lurking around the waiting room at the time, as once they reopened I intended ordering myself :sweat There were a few, but at least one was ordered just before they closed for renewal (May-ish) and arrived around August iirc.
@Ouja Akuma - Too and Bee-a & their tender versions do still pop up on the MP, so if you do still want them you should be able to grab them - I managed to get both myself that way. :3nodding:

      • x 1
    37. @Shido :: I am looking for their 3rd version. I did a Wanted post in the MP so hopefully I can find them, even if it's just their heads.

@lukita :: Oh yeah, that's why the group said to not place the order. I think I was like...$20 shy from the shipping so I posted in a group about how excited I was only to be met with concerned people who probably never got their orders or refunds. So I def dodged a bullet but man, it was a crushing feeling.

    38. I know this is an old post, I might have searched wrong or done something stupid but I tried to look for dreamofdoll on this archive website and I had no luck :( is there any specific way to find it? or is it just gone even from wayback machine?

My first guess back then as to why it disappeared, was that they moved website/name change and made it Asian only. But now that I have looked through this thread it´s probably more because the company couldn´t keep up the sales anymore. Just a very odd way to close a company. it´s such a shame it´s gone. I loved visiting this dollsite and looking at their beautiful dolls and clothes! I´m lucky to have two from them, and they are just as pretty now as they was back then.

I personally never mind when dolls looks similar. Artists have their style and way of creating. but I can absolutely get behind why some find DOD too similar

    39. @Miko_Chan - the Wayback machine is a great tool but misses a lot unfortunately.
I spent waaaay too long trawling the website, both before it disappeared and via wayback, grabbing as much as I could and merging it with the images I had saved previously.
I've put this in the DOT discussion thread before, but I'll drop it here too - Dream Of Doll Archive Dropbox!
I've still got a lot of their black/purple site to sort & archive but there's quite a lot of it there for you to look at :)

I have prosopagnosia/face blindness, and weirdly I can tell most DOD sculpts apart :frownyblush:

    40. Waow thank you so much for all of your effort in saving these! I will take a look in that thread as well. Doa is such a huge forum now so I really appreciate your reply here :3

What a nostalgic feel looking at those lovely photos. I remember I had a huuuuge wishlist :XD: thank you again!

    41. This is sad to hear, and I just found a head sculpt I liked that might have fit my character too :...(
I wonder what happened to the company for them to just disappear without a trace.

    42. @RoyalRegals Which one? They do still pop up for sale on occasion!

    43. The sculpt was Luke! I am mostly just want the head if I can find one.

    44. @RoyalRegals Conveniently I know of one for sale elsewhere! I'll PM you the link :3nodding:

    45. i miss dream of dolls so much, i remember really wanting a doc si but i never got one...maybe someday he'll pop up....im still so sad abt them leaving so suddenly

    46. Yeah, it blows :C I remember seriously eyeballing Code 2 back in the day but the budget just wasn't there and then the site went poof x_x Just keep stalking those second-hand sites!
