Dolpa 2 in New York City Discussion

Jan 11, 2007

    1. Yay! I just booked my plane ticket today as well. It makes it all more real, doesn't it? Although I'm still finding it hard to believe I'm REALLY going to this!

    2. Yeah, it's really exciting :) I very deeply wanted to go to the last NYC Dolpa but because of family commitments to go to NYC a few weeks before it it just didn't make sense. I'm so glad I'm making it this time and I'll have have some extra time to be a tourist :D

    3. I don't really want to read through this whole thread to look for my answer, so I'll ask it point blank.

Must you buy something from VolksUSA in order to attend? I just registered my boy onto the SD Overseas Dollfie list... But I wasn't sure if it was necessary to purchase something first from the LA store.

    4. I just hope I can get in. Once I know I'm going as in, have the response from Volks saying yes you are in fact on our list, I can go ahead a requset time off from work and whatnot. I'm supertitous like that I refuse to jinx myself by planning things in advance. I am gonna be upset if I can't go and it's only 2 hours away from me.

    5. JayF: I think the best to email [email protected] and ask that quesation. They told me I had a membership card check for updateson the dolpa site itself

    6. I'm so excited! I just booked a room at the Gershwin! I've never attended a doll event before (or New York City~) so I'm excited as well as nervous. If you see someone there clutching a Megu or Show in the corner looking scared, it is me :D
      Anna

    7. All right, thank you. :)

    8. I know it's probably too early to bring this up but I think it would be fun if we had a meet up on Saturday night after the event. Maybe we could all get dinner or something else, just an idea :)

    9. Sounds like a nice idea. ^^ Do you think there will be changes in the date though? *_*

    10. You mean the dates of the Dolpa? Probably not, I would assume if they annouced those dates it's because they reserved room(s) at FIT for those dates.

    11. I think dinner Saturday night is a great idea! We'd have to make reservations at a nice place that would allow us to hang around though. Anybody got any ideas?

    12. Somewhere near by FIT would be good, as in somewhere within walking distance. I've never been over by FIT and have only been to NYC onces. Anyone from the area have any good ideas? Or anyone who went to last years party notice anywhere nice near by?

    13. Last year we had an afterparty at the Gershwin hotel and actually ordered in some really awesome sushi at suggestion of one of the people present. ^^ I'd recommend doing something like that again, as I didn't see any restaurants large enough to host a bunch of people in the area.

    14. Well it's official, my husband is now subscribed to FDQ. :D

    15. I just noticed this:
"Attention! For the customers who are registered on the Super Dollfie Overseas Owner List on Volks Japan International Site. Please note that this registration and the one for Volks USA membership is a completely different system, and is operated separately."

So I guess that means that I'll need to be someone's guest, or buy something from Volks USA.... Not that I don't want to, but I'm trying to save all my cash for this event.. :(

    16. There are very cheap things you can get on the VolksUSA web site. I know several things are $5 and under ;)

    17. I just went and read through the whole site and I'm glad they're having the customization contest again! I didn't have time to enter last year but since they've notified us so far in advanced I think it should be ok.

It doesn't mention guests in the "How to Apply" section, so I don't know if guests will be allowed. It also doesn't mention a lottery yet. *crosses fingers*

    18. I'm not sure if this has been asked yet but does anyone have any good suggestions for hotels in the area? I've never been to NYC and my mom has like $400 in free airline tickets, so I'm going to try to make it. Thanks!

    19. A bunch of us are staying at The Gershwin http://gershwinhotel.com/
There's a thread someone in the meetup section about it. :)

    20. *nods* The prices there are some of the very lowest I've found, so if cost is an issue it's a good place to stay. That or staying in a dormatory like room at the Gershwin is also very affordable. The Larchmont came highly recommended to me by a friend who stayed there. If you're interested though I would call soon as when I called they were close to selling out :)

    21. Well I bought my plane tickect yesterday & reserved a room @ the Gershwin the other day. And NOW is when I get an attack of nerves!!! *SIGH*

    22. I've been having that a bit too. I'm worried about navigating through NYC and actually getting an invite to the event.

    23. Don't worry too much about navigation :) The subway is easy to use, super cheap & really fast, but if you don't want to use it, there are cabs EVERYWHERE! :D

    24. I second this. :) I have a chronic problem with navigation and getting lost, but I've found nyc to be fairly user-friendly in that regard. The subway system is great, and easy to figure out.

    25. Hey does anyone run a hotel package, or is everyone on their own?

    26. Lolly and I are staying at the gershwin again.

      WOOOOT for tea!!

    27. No hotel package. It's every man (or woman) for themselves.

    28. I have another question, and too be honest don't want to go through 17 pages to see if its been asked (I'm so lazy today....:P)

How many people can come on one volks membership? I want to go but don't want to go to NYC alone. Anyone know?

    29. Last year, they allowed folks to apply for single or single + guest invitations. No one knows yet about this year...

    30. The FAQ section is up on the nyc dolpa page! $30 a ticket. They are allowing guests! The FAQ also mentions that if too many attendees want to bring a guests, they will hold a lottery. It sounds like they are not anticipating the need for a lottery just to attend. :) I am so psyched for this!

    31. Yeah! Thanks:)

    32. do we know which school heads will be there? :3 *wants a school head B so badly*

    33. It's a bit disappointing that guests can't participate in the workshops, but at least my boyfriend will be able to watch my things while I enjoy myself! *^^* I wouldn't mind a School-C head... I wonder if you'll be able to purchase the new UV-cut bodies to go with them?

    34. Erf... I have such mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, it's a big doll party that's actually on the East coast. On the other hand, it's Volks specific, and I don't have any Volks dolls, nor do I think I could get one between now and then... my other option seems to be subscribing to a fashion doll magazine? EUGGGGH. I hate fashion dolls. And this statement from their website scares me a bit:

The growing fascination with ball-jointed dolls seemed to overshadow the traditional fashion doll. But if you look closely at the market, you will see, for example, that Mattel posted profits for the first time in almost a year because of an increase in Barbie sales.

I don't know about you guys, but it seems like they see BJDs as a threat to their precious barbies. So why is Volks teaming up with them? I don't know, maybe I'm paranoid, but this just doesn't seem right.

I'd hate to see this Ken: http://volksusa.com/msd0001.html End up looking like this Ken: http://www.manbehindthedoll.com/images/thesunsetbubble.jpg :(

    35. Fashion Doll Quarterly usually has several BJD articles per issue. Sure, they might focus on fashion dolls, but you have to admit that BJD's are like very glamorous fashion dolls. (Admittedly much cooler, and far more interesting.)

I think that quote from the site is just suggesting that doll collecting is up right now.

Also, you don't need a volks doll to attend, you just need to purchase something at Volks USA. You won't be able to bring your other dolls that are non-volks, but you can still attend.

    36. Ok, there wasn't much mention of bjds on their website other than that blurb and the thing about Olivia, so it scared me. Is there really no minimum price to be included in the Volks registry? They have some eyes on there that I like, but I wasn't sure that would be enough.

    37. The eyes should be enough to be included. :)

They actually talk alot about BJDs and are a pretty good magazine. I like their paper quality and their doll photos are spectacular. (You should see the pictures of Olivia from the last issue. She looked like a gorgeous super model and nothing like a doll. They were amazing.)

This is also their second NYC party pair-up. So its not like FDQ doesn't have some sort of vested interest in BJD's.

    38. Would someone mind telling me whether I need to get a ticket to this event ahead of time and where I get one? I know there are restrictions for entry... but I'm a new subscriber to fdq so I assume I can go. I have a friend in nyc who'll let me stay, so I am ready to go. I hope they're not sold out?

      winternight

    39. They haven't said how you buy tickets yet. We're still waiting to hear ourselves.

    40. Last time you actual paid at the door.

    41. Almost a year ago I might I have agreed with you, but after welcoming home both the FDQ exclusive SD16G Olivia Morgan and the second SD16G Amelia, I've officially been coverted! *^^*

...and I wouldn't mind a SD16B 'Ken' in the least! *drools*

    42. Where do you see that Mattel is teaming up with Volks? Are they planning to put out a product together???? That would be ironic - Mattel doing doll business with a Japanese manufacturer again....
I really doubt if Mattel is worried about Volks....their main competition is Bratz....Alex

    43. Not Mattel, just FDQ. God, if Mattel teamed up with Volks it would be a sign of the apocalypse. :o

    44. I completely Agree with you sweetie... I Absolutely ADORE the SD16 Girl body..... I'm really hopeing for another SD16 Boy.... That would be Just beyond Amazing:love
      ~Anthony

    45. You know... I really think we'll see another SD16 boy either in New York or LA this year :) Fingers crossed!

    46. Hopefully the stars will align in our favor! A friend of mine mentioned that Amelia would need a fully human SD16B frog prince/king, but I think that Kurt already fills this position somewhat (in the story doesn't the frog transform to a fully human prince at the end?). I don't think we'll see another addition to the Tokyo Boys Story quite yet, but who knows?

    47. Hrmmm... I already have plans to attend Dollpa in NYC 2, do I dare fly out to LA later in the year? *grins* Wouldn't want to miss out!

    48. It looks like on the FAQ section of the website, they say the guests will be allowed, but they won't be able to do the workshops and what not -

So, that leads me to wonder, will guests be allowed to participate in bingo? Were they last year?

    49. We had bingo last year--and the prizes were stupendous... a collection of Sei Tenshi, MSD Hewitt, and SD Tony. (Of course, there were consolation prizes, too.)

As I was looking at the Event Information on the website again, I noticed that they are indeed promising a doll for the event. :) (I think we'd all hoped for/counted on this, but it's nice that they're promising!)

I think the last doll in the Tokyo Boys/LA Boys Story was Olivia... if they were to come out with another one at this year's NY Dollpa, it would be almost a full year between the two, so it's possible!

      Sooooo excited here!

    50. Last year they didn't seem to know the difference between a guest or not a guest there was NO way to tell.

Corrected my spelling ... guess where did that come from !

    51. But Volks / FDQ will probably have a roster of names - don't you think they'll be separating the guests and registrants mainly for the painting class? And possibly for the FCS or LE ordering? Alex

    52. They should have, I hope they do!! I know last time people were happy when the guess won things LOL.... most guests were not that into the dolls. Its like having two chances at a win. I think the FCS should be for anyone that wants one though as its a pay money get doll.

    53. For the FCS, it seems as if they're going to have us register for it ahead of time to order a doll... However, I'm still not all that sure how much money I'm going to have to spend while there (still saving and don't want to put all my eggs in a basket until it's the day I'm leaving in case I have unexpected bills) and I don't know if there's going to be a one-off I'm dying to have, so....

(Gets to the point) .... Does anyone remember if there was the option of signing up for FCS the day of the event, or did you HAVE to register for it in advance?

    54. Last year there was no FCS in New York, so I don't really know. Anyone here go to the LA event last August? They offered FCS for 1 day when they debuted the elves.

    55. I'm fairly certain that for all three of the LA parties there was no signing up for FCS in advanced, you just lined up the day of.

I was also thinking of the possibility of FCS if there is no one-off I like (or win) and I also don't like the limited doll being offered but there will be no way to know about the one-offs before I get there. Even though I live in California it's still a 9 hour drive from here to the Volks store.

    56. At the first LA party there was a raffle for your place in line, and if you were lucky enough to get a good number you could get a ticket for FCS if you wanted. After that it's always been pretty much first-come first-serve. On the elf FCS opening day they only allowed one FCS per person.

    57. Looks like the Beauty Salon page was updated. I'm glad to see they will be offering elastic replacement. My Nono is very loose and I'd rather just replace her elastic with new elastic then get her tightened. I think the elastics seen better days and tightening can only do so much :sweat

    58. I'm hoping that since Yokinujo is a bit older, or at least older looking, than the other characters in the Tokyo Boys story & since the only characters we've seen from the L.A. Boys story are SD16 (Yukinojo & Olivia) that the new dolls that are released for the storyline will be SD16 too.
      I want more SD16 boys!!!:fangirl:
Oh dare! Dare! I'm hoping to be able to go to both too. :) I've basically turned my savings account into my "save for BJDs & BJD stuff" account.
