Dolpa 2 in New York City Discussion

Jan 11, 2007

    1. I had a great time at the Dollpa with Wicked Stitchery and Jade Rust... a special thanks to the first for letting me store stuff in her room, and to the second for ensuring I made it home safely! Can't wait to see you both again next year! *^^*

    2. Matthew, you were tons of fun to hang out with! I'm so glad you got your FCS baby ordered... ::hugs until next year::

      :D

    3. Oh jeez. Another notch in the garterbelt that is Sora's Ego.
Well, Sora never lets adoration go to waste, so here, a bonus just for you. <3
It's the least he can give you, in exchange for letting us meet & grope Leon (camisole and all)!

Was that the same woman who interviewed Angie (and me, at the very end)? If so, then we're all gonna appear in the late-summer issue of Missbehave magazine. [IMG] Since she was just learning about the whole doll phenomenon, I was wondering why she was asking me so much about yaoi, already... You must've really piqued her curiosity! Heh. Gawd, now I can't wait to see what's in the article. (About the gay dolls: I replied, "I have only boy dolls, so if they're not already gay when they get here, they'll learn.")

Missbehave, btw, is a very rippin' glossy fashion-without-stupidity girl powah magazine, along the lines of what Sassy used to do... but New-York-centric, and with even drunker models. Onwards & upwards with journalism!

Egads! *whimper* *_* How I do crave that Giant Cabin Boy body!! But alas, no. I only scored one Marsha, and she goes to Kellyhime, the woman who truly needs & deserves & requires a Marsha, and as such, ye shall not pry that doll out of her cold dead hands. ^^ Makes me wish I'd've put in for the two Marshas they let you try for, on those cards! Ah well. Unless you will take one of my kidneys in exchange for your Reisner, I will bid you Good Day.

    4. Yay!! "Jack my Hedgehog"!! ftw!

And, while showing your own style, he looked like such a loving tribute to the pictures in the Andrew Lang color fairy books (whichever one he was in--like olive or brown or one of the other really late books ;)).

      Well-deserved win.
Even though 99% of the people didn't know his tale, he was such a great piece that he was loved best. :D

    5. Hi, Ann in CT! A name I recognize! My mom and I were sitting next to you on Sunday! It was fun to meet you! :-)

      Maggie

    6. It was so nice to sit with you & your mom, and JulieM and so many other wonderful 'doll people'!

I hadn't realized you were the padawansguide person--you did that wonderful website? I know AlleyCatScratch, who refers to you all the time in giving costuming advice. :)
      [/chorus of It's a Small World]

    7. Speaking of Julie M:

Hon, you are a WONDER!!!! I LOVE my badge, and having the extras in there was perfect for when people asked how to contact me. Thank you, thank you!!!!

    8. Hello everyone! I put up a quickie gallery - http://ellesdolls.com/dolls/main.html

Scroll down to "Doll Links" & it is the first one.

      *warning* Nothing else on the site works. ^^;;

I am trying to get a gallery up, but it is very slow going. So just look at the Dolpa pictures.
I just got my mother's pictures & I will put hers up soon as well.

Also, please PM me if you can ID any of the dolls pictured, who won the one-offs (#8 winner, if you ever want to trade or sell PM me ;) ), and especially the contest entries!

I'd love to know who owned what, who won what & especially what fairytale it is from.

      I didn't seem to get entry # 25 :(

      Thank you!
      Anna

    9. I have a question about bringing a significant other. Do they have to be
a member also? Or does my membership also get another ticket?

(I haven't seen this mentioned yet, sorry if I missed it). :o

    10. Hi Ann in CT,

Yep, that's me! I run PadawansGuide.com and CostumersGuide.com! I'm a Mod on Alley Cat Scratch LotR list, though I'm not there much anymore. :-)

It is a small world, isn't it?

      Maggie

    11. :) Thanks!! When I thought about this contest I wanted to do a tale that was sort of hidden and not told very often. Worked pretty well at the end!!

    12. Um, the New York Dolpa is over. Usually you get one guest, be it a significant other or otherwise. Your guest doesn't have to be a member of anything I don't think.

I'd really like to see everyones workshop heads, so I made a thread in the Request Gallery area: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145676

    13. :doh Omg....I was thinking LA - sorry I didn't specify! Just saw 'Dolpa' in the
subject line and all else failed....thanks anyway!

    14. Those are my boys. ^^ A Kohya and a Piccolo. The lighting at FIT made Axel look a really strange color... XD He's very much BW in natural light, though.

    15. Thank you! I've updated it. I have a lot of unknown pics that my mother took that will need IDing. I hope to have a new gallery up tonight.
      Thanks!
      Anna

    16. I can't wait till he arrives! ...hopefully close to my birthday in mid-august *crosses fingers* Congrats on winning the president's choice, what an honour! ...but after seeing your faceups, I'm not surprised :)

    17. OMG, the F29's do look like Paris Hilton @_@

    18. I'll never look at F-29 the same way again XO

    19. I didn't know you got a boy!!! Which one?? Details, man, details!

    20. LOL Told you so! They even did a "Paris Hilton" wig (check out the pictures of the to-the-side blonde exclusive they released and tell me that's not Paris's hairstyle *_* ). To be fair, I've seen some gorgeous F29s, but after I saw the very first one and realized who she looked like, I simply can't go near the mold without grinning like an idiot.

    21. Could I ask if the person who won the Lucas one-off is on DOA, and if they'll be posting pictures? He was my favorite by far. ^__^ The faceup really made me look at the mold differently.

    22. I decided on a F31 normal skin boy, after seeing one of the F31 display models *swoons* I just hope his faceup comes out alright @_@

    23. Im curious, but was there the option of normal human ears with any of the F-29 through F-31 heads?

    24. This was my first Volks event and I had a fantastic time in NYC at the Dolpa 2! I can't wait for next time! I got my FCS Sunlight F-31 elf boy and Masha!

It was great to meet the people behind the DoA handles....just a few off the top of my head....Lady Samhainne, Brighnasa, operakatz, Cammy and her sister, Beautiful Doll, and Julie M (thanks for the name tags stuff!).

I finally got some pictures uploaded (dial-up)....so if you are not pictured out....LOL....take a peek. I'm going to post them over in the Gallery.

    25. It was a TREAT to meet you, too!!! Last year, I was too shy to talk to many people, and I really missed out on most of the fun! This year, however, meeting people and seeing their amazing dolls was more fun than the dollpa itself :D

I never did get the chance to say in person, but this beautiful Amelia who shared a table with our boys has to be most lovely one I've seen yet... WOW!

    26. You *know* he will!!! That mold is so unutterably lucious... Mmmmmm :) You were glowing when you got back from ordering him, by the way... genuinely glowing :D

    27. I had SUCH an amazing time, eeeee!!! :D

      Here are my photos:

      http://www.matermetis.com/Dolls/NYDolpa07/

My absolute FAVORITE picture this year was taken by Sher, though -- she got the perfect image of Kira (my daughter) after she won Rosalind, her one-off School C (in the black dress):

      :D :D :D

I saw so many AMAZING dolls . . . but, more importantly, I got to meet so many people who I've known for ages online, and to hang out again with old friends, and to meet new and awesome friends -- it was so much fun just randomly walking up to people and starting up conversations about their dolls, everyone was so friendly and welcoming! ^_^

Kira had a blast as well -- and she feels very lucky to have brought home Rosalind!

The Shigeta family and the Volks staff were all wonderful, and I want to extend a special THANK YOU to all of the volunteers as well, for making this such an unforgettable event!!

      *still overflowing with bubbly excitement*

    28. So many amazing photos!

Can anyone tell me more about the one-off number 4 in the orange kimono? What a breathtaking doll! I am pig ignorant about molds and am left wondering who she is....

    29. That would have been Michele :)

    30. The person who won the Lucas one-off was at the same table with me :D
But I am not sure does she come to DOA or not....

    31. I agree, it was so great to finally meet Janine her girl was STUNNING Beyond beliefe:love But that was an Olivia in a Amelia Default gown Lady Samhainne not an Amelia:sweat Say, I never got to see you at Dolpa, how is Hewitt?
      ~Anthony

    32. No, the human ears are unfortunately Sato-only... but to be honest, with the right wig, you simply remove the elf ears from the head and he/she will look perfect human.

    33. Oh yes, I remember admiring her wig while my Amelia visited with her @_@ (...not to mention she doesn't have any green blushing *^^*)

    34. Thank you for the identification of the number 4 doll in the orange kimono as Michele...Absolutely stunning! And thank you for the link to the Michele page too! Oops...must go get something to wipe the drool off the keyboard....

Really kind of you, Lady Samhainne and Janne!

    35. I'm so happy to have had the opportunity to do FCS at the Dollpa, especially for a head that would have otherwise been limited to LA/Sato. Maybe it was that new-daddy glow? *^^*

    36. :D I was the woman at the table next to you, sitting back to back with you! :D Here's Hewitt:

He says hello, but he's sad he didn't get a chance to see you in New York! :)

And that explains why she was so incredibly lovely... I've always had a weak spot for Olivias :D

    37. I wanted to write something before I forgot. I had such a busy week.

It was such a blast. Volks is amazing. They brought a really large group of people from Japan and Los Angeles!

Mr. Shigeta was so warm and charming. I loved his Japanese lesson.

Saturday was a great start for me with a painting class taught by doll artist Aone. There were 4 painting classes going on at same time with Mr. Ota, Aone, Valico and Mikey. So we were in a small group...which made it really nice.

It was incredible to watch Aone (my instructor) paint eyebrows just like we requested. She worked so fast. The students could also ask questions about her technique. Kuni translated everything even demonstrating the paint brush positions himself. They made a great team.

We did painting with acrylics and blushing with pastels.

In our painting kit we received...

      Paper palette
Paints natural face-up colors...and what they called thinner or was it retarder?
      paint brush
      Magic Eraser sponge
      sponge sand paper
      sand paper
      pastels
      Water color pen
      gloss
      gloss thinner
      2 metal water trays

Such a pleasure to discover so many talented artists in our class. I enjoyed seeing Michelle, Armeleia again and meeting Junkets!

People who wanted their painted head coated to protect it...were sent to Mikey.

      Mikey demonstrated spraying techniques outside.

Volks used a new finishing spray. Not Mr. Super Clear but a Zoukei-mura brand..with yellow label.

      http://www.volks.co.jp/images/goods/img5848_0.jpg

Since it was a hot humid day and I asked Mikey about flaking or white spots...since I thought humidity was not good...when spraying...with Mr. Super Clear.

She said the humidity would slow down the drying time with this new Zoukei-mura brand. But since this spray is different from Mr. Super Clear it would be okay...no flaking or white spots.

This spray also has a smaller tooth than Mr. Super Clear and it used for base spray (before applying pastels) and coating afterwards.

Mr. Kagi said Volks USA will carry it soon. But I could buy it right now as they brought it to sell at NYC Dolpa! YES!

Volks USA set up a table where they sold customizing tools and paints to sell including this finishing spray! So I bought spray, more paints, gloss and a couple of tools. My new favorite tool is I call the baby hook..great for taking off and putting on the MSd and Yo-Sd Yuki rubber band head caps.

I was happy Volks brought 2 doll doctors on Sunday...so that I believe everyone had a chance to get their doll looked at.

My SDC Kurt body had a limp wrist/hand. No amount of tightening on my part could fix it. I was happy to see Doll Doctor Matsui who came to my rescue once again.

He said resin was stuck around hand so little S hook wouldn't go through arm. He drilled it out and S hook snapped right back in. He also gave Kurt a body check to make sure everything else was okay.

Mr. Ota who was the other doll doctor applied new eyelashes for my msd f-13 Gino. There was a small charge for applying lashes. You had to bring your own Volks eyelashes. But it was worth it for me to get.

If you had a second doll to get a check up you took another number to wait. I took a second number and came back later on. Now my painting instructor Aone was a third person helping out...at the beauty shop.

She applied new eye lashes for Tsubaki and Toppi. This time I could sit next to her and watch her technique. He He.

Good seeing Rachel again. Thanks for the diet coke break. I hope you got some needed rest.

Fun hanging with Lolly, Sher, Jenny, AreeElf, Sharon, and Donna.

Thanks Armeleia for doing my lovely Hewitt Elf. He made his debut appearance at the New York Dolpa.

The one of a kind kimonos were too tempting...they did a good drawing only letting people choose one item from the bunch. Then back on line if you wanted more. Boy was that line was long.

I was lucky to get a beautiful MSD Kimono...by Asoyim with hair ornament, tabi, and zori. Then when more became available went back in line for a 2nd one.

Took breaks outside of dolpa and met some of my customers from Pennsylvania and talked eyes.

Then the North Carolina crowd came by.

Followed by the group from Michigan including Marsh, Amy, and Takira which was really a pleasure.

It is a thrill for me to get to meet these special people in person.

I got to do FCS and was so honored to have Mikey take my order. EEK!

Another thing I really love about the way they did this NY Dolpa was have so many FCS items to look at close-up on display. So you can look at Eyes, Ears, hands..and lots of painted heads while you waited. I was just enamored with the MSD F-13 and MSD F-09 tan heads. Beautiful face-ups.

I want to thank Aimee and Cassiel both for their great FCS guides. Many of the NYC Dolpa people studied your guides. This made it easier and quicker to choose and eliminate some things...and discuss choices. People moved faster ..so many got to do FCS. They did all the waiting list people too I believe.

It was fun to see Michelle and AreeElf do their own FCS...too.

It was fun to meet the traveling duo from St. Louis. Lady Samhainne and Brighnasa. I love those unicorn head-dresses. WOW!

I am glad Bianca got her Sd with troubled leg checked out...
Sharon got a doll doctor visit for her falling elf ears...Donna got her doll string tension adjusted. So many people were served.

So many people I knew won things in the costume contest, One offs or lottery it was super exciting.

It was fun when Mr. Shigeta announced "Shelly" won the one off. Because it was really Sherry! (Sher who won!)

I felt lucky and won a Msd Gothic dress set with Black boots...for the lottery prize.

The Shigetas finished off the evening with gifts for everyone. I received a bling necklace. It had a rhinestone encrusted $ sign.

Thanks to Pat of FDQ for organizing everything and thanks to her wonderful staff of volunteers.

    38. .....................

      Geri

    39. ::hugs Gina:: It was such a treat to see you again after meeting you in LA last year :) I should have hunted you down at the Gershwin afterwards though... I NEEEEEEDDD some more gorgeous eyes, and it's always a 1000 times easier to pick them out when I can see them in person :D Are you likely to be out at the LA event this fall? If so, I'll hunt you down out there.

      ::more hugs::

      Tamara aka Lady Samhainne

PS. Brighnasa's headdresses really are amazing, aren't they? I don't know if she told you, but she did all of the hand-made pins in my F30's hair, too :D She's just become an asounding jeweler...

    40. I didn't realize that this spray is different than Mr. Super Clear. I bought a can of it a month ago when I was in Tokyo, because they didn't have any MSC in flat UV, but this said UV on the can and the girl at the store assured me that it was flat. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm glad to know that it's even better than MSC.

Great write-up of the event! It sounded wonderful!:)

    41. That spray is the shit!! Mikey sprayed it right onto the head, wearing no mask, and she just held the head with her hand!! :o I guess this means it's less volatile than MSC, but I'd still use a mask with it... it's stinky XD

Gina, thanks so much for suggesting that I see the doll doctor about my girl's leg! Last year I was too scared to bring her to the doctor, and I probably wouldn't have seen him this year if you hadn't mentioned that he was interested in seeing the break! They replaced 3 broken legs this time, so they have 3 broken legs to study. :) Thanks so much!

    42. That spray was the new UV cut spray that was being talked about in the customizers section that was only available in Japan. It's supposed to be not only better than the old UV cut but isn't supposed to yellow.

I picked up a can but haven't used it yet because I just opened a new can of MSC a week before

    43. I wish I'd made it up to the sales table earlier on Saturday. They were all sold out of the spray by time I got there.
I really need some too as I'd just popped open my last can of MSC a few days before.

    44. Oh, neat! I can't wait to try it!:)

    45. Hi Nakitama,

I am so glad you got to see doll doctor with your doll.

When you say replaced..did they bring extra legs or are you to send yours off and they will sell you a new one?

Did the doll doctor tell you anything about the leg breakage?
Such as what could have caused it?

    46. Yup, they brought extra legs with them. The doll doctor went into their storage room to get the legs. I think that they had a box of replacement parts, because several times they accidentally brought out an SD13 girl leg, which was too long. They kept the broken one, and gave us replacements for free! Which I think was the right thing to do :)

Kuni kept telling me to please understand that it was not a sure thing that they'd have the extra parts, but in the end they did find 3 legs to give us. The poor guy, I think he was sweatin bullets :sweat

They didn't tell me anything about what might have caused it, but I got the feeling that they had seen it before. Hopefully now that they have the parts they'll be able to study the problem more. :aheartbea

    47. Hi Ponygery,

It was such a big event..with so much to see and do. It was fun!

      Hi Lady Samhainne,

I plan to go to LA event. I will bring eyes to check out but I still have to figure where I can show them. If selling is permited or not. Brighnasa's headdresses would do very well. I think my sister and her friends bought some. So I have to see them at our next NY meet.

      Hi Kellyhime,

I am glad you enjoyed my report. Volks is really doing more to outdo itself each event.
It will be interesting to see comparisons of the new spray versus Mr. Super Clear.

    48. I shoulda bought some of that spray... It's just that when I wondered how this was different from Super Clear, the person next to me said "I think it's an oil base" and that Mr. Super Clear is a water base, which is why it comes off in water and I thought "OIL?! I don't care how it sticks; oil+resin=BAD!"

But you say it's better? My boys are still un-coated, and Eron's a touch yellow after these years (was it ever decided if pureskin yellows faster or slower than oldskin?), so... maybe I should have picked up a can...

(Does anyone have an MSD stringing tool and want an SD one instead? I'm willing to trade... the one I got with my workshop kit doesn't always fit into my boys)

    49. OMG, I'm finally home (although about to head over to dad's house for Father's Day). Hubby, myself, the four step-kids, and my daughter Lily spent the past 24 hours driving back from New England. <yawn>

I had an absolutely incredible time at the Dolpa. I reacquainted with many people from last year and from the Austin doll convention in 2004, and met quite a few new ones. SimOneLess (I've got the capitals all mixed up, I'm sure), it was a pleasure to meet and to speak with you. I didn't mention that my ex is a card-carrying bona fide Scotsman and that he wore his kilt when we married way back in the day <grin>. Your outfit was stunning!

I was privileged to spend time with my buddy Jay and her pals, Maggie and Jean, and with Ann from Connecticut -- a woman who finishes projects much as I do myself! <grin>

If I forgot to bring your name tag or inadvertently messed something up, I apologize!

At the end of two very long and exciting days, I won the ninth of the Rei-Tenshi. The number after mine was called 4th or so and the number before mine was called shortly thereafter. I'd given up entirely and my table members had to tell me that my number had been called. I was utterly stunned when the paper I drew from the lottery box was opened and I was informed that I'd won a Rei-Tenshi. Thank you for the moral support I heard from all of you out at the tables!

The little one is a blond with one bent arm and straight legs that permit her to stand in a toed-in position. She's got tiny pink wings. I used to think I wasn't much for tinies ... I may have to revise that. I'm not sure but I think she's been trying to tell me that her name is Iris. It's hard to tell over the roar of five children in a mini-van.

Volks outdid themselves this year. The evening painting class was lovely and well done -- sadly it's nearly impossible to do anything within the two hour period, but instructions were clear and we have been given the wherewithal to practice, practice, practice until we're happy.

Thanks so much to the Shigeta family (with heart-felt wishes for Mrs. Shigeta's quick and total recovery from her surgery), the entire Volks staff, Pat Henry and FDQ, and the volunteers, all of whom worked so very hard to make this a special event for Super Dollfie collectors.

In any event, off to dad's for father's day, and then off to sleep for MANY HOURS! :)

    50. Hi all!

I'm still smiling from all the fun we had last weekend! It so cool seeing everyone's pictures, I must try and download mine and see if any are good enough to share. ;)

The weekend really flew by, but was so much fun!!! And I'm really happy with all the goodies (Volks & private maker) that I was able to get. Nothing like dolly loot to keep the after partying blues at bay! But how on earth did I miss seeing Gina when she had eyes unpacked?

Besides eyes, the only thing I wish I had bought was the brunette upswept wig...I was under the impression that the brunette upswept wig wouldn't fit my girl, so I passed up getting it. :doh If you have this wig and now isn't for you, please PM me, I'll give it a good home. :)

Glad to hear you got home safely Julie M, and CONGRATS again on winning your Rei-Tenshi! I had a blast in Painting Class with you and am looking forward to seeing your finished head...I still have a lot to do on mine, but plan to work on it this week.

      Hugs, Juli DC :)

    51. Julie DC

We had such a fun table! I'm probably going to worry those dratted eyebrows and lashes to DEATH before settling on anything.

    52. LOL Julie M!

You and me both sister!  I was happy with the brows I painted during the class, but now I'm not so sure. So I'm taking advice I got in art highschool from my many drawing, painting, and sculpture teachers:

Take a break, back away from it for a little while, so you can view it with fresh eyes before you change it.

Anyway, the head you were working on in class looked real good to me, so I think you're like many artists...the harshed critic when it comes to your own work. ;)

      Hugs, Juli DC :)

    53. I missed picking up a can of it too but Volks staff members told me that this spray will be available for us to buy at Volks USA very soon, if its not already in stock. :)

      Juli DC

    54. I hope so!!! Wee_Little_Faerie and I have almost run out of the communal MSC, and I can't find it in stock anywhere! :doh It's all the Unoa faceplates' fault, they showed up right after Dolpa and made us paint them! :sweat

    55. Yeah, last minute, and not having brought the right tools. :sweat I was so lucky to meet you and get the needle, especially, that I needed. :)

      We had a great table!

Little Iris (if that really turns out to be her name) is completely adorable. Thank you so much for letting me hold her. [/melts]

Glad also to hear you managed the trip home in one piece. :)

    56. Hehe... it was good to meet (and interview) you too! You did mention that he was Scottish but no, you didn't tell me that he got wed in a kilt... that rocks!!!

    57. I was the friend Kim drug along (and rkold too, really, even though we didn't get to see each other much over the weekend). It was my first Dollfie-related event, and I was really impressed -- not just by the dolls, but by how friendly people were. So many times, total strangers would just lean over and start chatting with me about a one-off or one of the dolls in the costume contest. It was a warmer atmosphere than I expected, and that makes me look forward to getting into BJDs even more. So thanks to everyone there for helping to make Dollpa in New York 2 a fun, friendly experience for those of us who are just getting started!

(If anyone saw the red-headed 1/6th-scale boy leaning against Kim's Leon, that was mine; I like to tell people I'm 1/6th of the way to being a real SD owner. ^^ )

    58. Welcome to the community, Niko Ko! BJDs come with only one warning: they're highly addictive :) Beyond that, all I can say is that you're in for a treat. The people who collect BJDs are creative, fun, warm people, as you've already seen, and the companies who make the dolls are often the same way, too!

    59. I remember seeing that little one! He was quite the cutie (handsome? ^-^) Made me wish I had brought my 1/6 girls too! LOL
