Dollzone Discussion ~ 60 and 70cm ~ Part VIII

Aug 1, 2018

    1. Congrats Cloudedmind! Lucius is a gorgeous boy! The new 75cm body is certainly drool worthy.

Did you get him full set?

    2. Congrats on the order! Do you have a shorter body in mind for him yet?

      • x 1
    3. No, just the nude doll. While the outfit is interesting, most of my dolls live in the hear and now, and largely wear modern style clothing even though age wise they're ancient. XD

For the time being I'll probably put him on the ID75 body, but I really would like a less muscular body in the 72cm range. Unfortunately, the only one I can think of is the DF-H 72cm body, but the neck is way to small at 11cm to the heads 12.8cm. >_<

    4. Oooh congratulations @Cloudedmind! I hope your wait time isn't too long!

    5. Edit: Ooops! Wrong thread, I forgot they were minis. I'll remove myself to the other thread post haste!

    6. Same! But, I've got plenty of other doll projects I really should be working on.

    7. @Cloudedmind OH congratulations. Please post pictures when he arrives.

I'm supposed to be doing important stuff so I decided to procrastinate and take some doll photos. I have a back drop I ordered off of legend doll I want to put up one day but I am moving soon and would just be increasing my work load.

    9. Zacarias, love that boy of yours! :aheartbea

Wow! The dog is really cute in your photos, too. Where is the find him?

    10. I had a friend nab me a secondhand Raymond-1 head to shell Captain Jazz's (Stramonium) first mate and husband Zai. I am gonna use Val's old B70-003 body for him, since Val has now upgraded to an OT for this thread body. Strange to think that Val is no longer a Dollzone in any shape or form, but it's okay. I still have the Chen head, I need to take new pics of her.

      • x 2
    11. Thank you Zacarias!

Yes! It’s very strange! Val was a gorgeous Chen for so long. I guess I miss the old Val. (I sort of had a crush on him. You know how I love old Dollzone sculpts.). Sorry for whining. I apologize. :doh I’m just glad you still have the Chen head. That sculpt has always been a favorite of mine. :aheartbea ( Again apologies. I hope I didn’t offend with my fan-girling over the old Val.)

    12. No offense taken! It was honestly a tough decision to reshell Val, and I still love the Chen head too a lot, hence why I kept it and made it into something different enough from Val that it doesn’t bother me to keep her around.

      • x 1
    13. Thank you IzabethS, I'm so glad you still love Chen. :fangirl:

    14. Of course!! Chen was the first doll I ever preordered, so it's quite special to me. Speaking of the head, I took a quick picture of her compared to Val 3.0

She's on a DFA 68cm girl body, which has quite a bit slimmer shoulders than the old B70-001 body she'd come on back in 2011. Her arrival anniversary is in about a week.

    15. Congrats on Chen’s anniversary!

They are both lovely dolls. :love The new Val certainly has a very masculine and realistic sculpt. It’s wonderful when a doll you envision comes to together.

Congrats on both of them! :fangirl:

    16. I have such a terrible weakness for the old sculpts and it's nice to see them pop up. Back in the day I was quite taken with Wing and Yu but had no character (and no extra money) for them. I really should get off my lazy butt and take some current pics of Fei-Lau (Edward).

      • x 2
    17. Iron-Dog, I’m so there with you on your feelings for the old DZ sculpts!

I have such an affection for them. Dollzone 70cm boys were the first 70cm boys I ever owned. I love looking at them. They take me back to the halcyon days of this hobby. :daisy

(And, I should also get off my “derrière” and take some new pictures of my boys.:doh)

    18. Awh, I went to go look at some of DZ’s 1/3 boys and it seems that I was totally unaware of a HUGE discontinuation >_< What a shame D: there was at least one other boy who I really liked, but I guess I missed out… …Not like I could have afforded it anyway. :B oh well.
I’m just happy that I got my most-favorite sculpt when I had the chance, then ^~^
Also, does anyone else feel like the 62cm boy body has a really big butt? Or is it just me? :v I haven’t played with any 1/3 dolls from different companies. maybe they’re all like that and I just had no point of reference. -_-

      • x 1
    19. Xxyaeba, I’m pretty sure the big discontinuation event where they retired all the 1/3 boys, except for Gray, happened in May of this year. We were all kind of shocked at how many dolls got discontinued. All the big boys were gone! :...(

Dollzone currently has a limited 77cm boy, Lucius. He is on sale until 15 Oct 2023. He comes with a choice of two different chest parts: muscled, or extra-muscled. (This info found at Alice’s Collection.). He has a deliciously brooding face, but unfortunately my doll money has vanished into home repairs this year. :doh

Sorry, but since I don’t own the current 62cm boy body I can’t really offer you an opinion on how big his butt is. But, from the pictures I’ve seen, it looks pretty cute.:chibi

    20. Yes, I noticed Lucius ^_^! Very pretty, he is :D I admire his brooding face too. Recently, I’ve gotten my fix of pretty boys.. I need more moody boys in my life :P. If $600 magically fell into my lap today, I know what I’d buy ;3c Unfortunately, that doesn’t look like it’ll happen any time soon :v

The 62cm body *is* super cute! Like, really beautiful. Though for the character I’m using it on, the build is actually a bit too handsome >_<) (typical troubles with shelling a character). I’ll probably look into selling it at some point >_> it deserves to go to a person who would appreciate it more than me “^_^).

    21. @IzabethS - Ooh a Raymond!! You know how much I am biased towards them. :whee:
Your Chen is so pretty! :D (And new Val is very handsome!)

      • x 1
    22. I’ve always liked Raymond and yours are gorgeous! I look forward to getting to paint mine
And thank you! I’m really happy with Val 3.0 and I am so glad I was able to repurpose the Chen head. It’s just too good of a head!

    23. IzabethS, how awesome you are getting a Raymond head! I love the Raymond sculpt! :aheartbea

    24. Thank you! I've not had a chance to take any photos of Azrael this year or even pull out Salmarnir. They're still here being pretty, but in the background. ;)
I am glad you could too! Beautiful old sculpts like that are too nice to forget about.

    26. Just thought I’d share my Gene, Ferdinand, fresh back from a faceup from Komorebi.dolls! I finally FINALLY am settled on this guy and he’s no longer the doll that I could sell at a moment’s notice. xD After years, welcome to the family my dude, LOL.

I also thought I’d share this for my own distraction because I need to stop looking at the newly released guy/body… dollzone is apparently my danger company because my knee-jerk reaction to every masculine sculpt 70 cm+ is just like take my money please!

    27. He’s beautiful and handsome, congrats on finally clicking with him!

I’m still waiting on my Raymond head to be shipped by a friend to me, but it’s okay, his intended body is just chilling on the couch in my work room XD

    28. Sovayne, what a handsome boy! :love

So glad you decided to share a photo of your boy. There definitely isn’t enough ‘Gene love’ on the forum.

IzabethS, what body do you have waiting for Raymond?

      • x 1
    29. You’ll be amused, but it’s Val’s previous body, the B70-003 in the 2015 normal yellow resin. I will need to color match the head, but I’m used to that by now. The color is impossible to match any readily available existing resin heads, so I’m gonna go the color match route!

      • x 1
    30. It seems like there's a number of DZ sculpts that barely get any love and I don't know why when they're beautiful. I'm heavily biased towards the lack of attention to Edward but that's because I own one.

      • x 2
    31. IzabethS, I’m happy to hear that Val’s old body will be sticking around. It will be perfect for the Raymond head! (But, Old Val will always be in my heart. :aheartbea)

Iron_Dog, I agree! Actually, I never felt like Dollzone dolls, in general, got the love they deserved. Maybe it’s not so much of an issue now, but back when DZ’s early sculpts came out (circa 2006) there was some bias against Chinese companies.

But, now, Dollzone has pretty much tied-up this thread for 1/3 dolls by retiring all of the large dolls and not replacing them with glorious new sculpts. Threads stay alive based on discussion and drooling over new dolls.

I’m still trying to understand why they felt the need to discontinue all their 70m dolls. The only 1/3 doll they have left, boys or girls, is Gray, and he’s 62cm. It’s very disheartening for a DZ fan.:...( (And, it also makes me worry because they have cut back their stable of dolls in all sizes.)

Nevertheless, we have our much-loved retired dolls to still gush about. iron_Dog, we love your Edward, Fei-Lau! And, I know Redfaery has an Edward too, Silfe. I’m so happy you both have an Edward. He a beautiful boy. :love

And, since I’m praising Edwards, here’s a flashback to his old company photo:

      • x 1
    32. I need to get some new photos of Fei-Lau. He has a different wig now as his previous mohair one became matted at the back of his head for some reason.

      • x 2
    33. Ah, yes! It's totally great to give the old Dollzone dolls love, and I agree they seem to be/have already done a sweep of their 70cm+ dolls. The ones they have been releasing though kind of give me hope because they seem to be trying to refill the empty slots but I do see how they're .... hm not sure if this is the right word but modernizing? the dolls. Or maybe not 'modernize' but perhaps catering to some specific tastes which seems to leaning toward a beefier body for the larger guys.

@Rabbit-moon Thank you! Yes, I've only seen one other Gene so I need to start sharing mine a lot more! I wish I would have bonded with him quicker but he had quite the body journey with me taking forever to waffle over his winged body... then getting him the wrong sized body and then getting him ~thicker Dollzone 70cm body made me warm BUT I guess the last thing I needed him to have was some painted teeth and not his default company faceup. xD

@IzabethS Thank you so much! I'm totally glad to have finally settled on him too. <3

    34. This is exactly it, the Chinese doll market (and Korean to an extent) has been changing over the last few years with an influx of new doll artists and collectors who prefer what I call the "Bara adjacent BL look". Muscular dolls with wide shoulders and small heads. The number of established Chinese doll companies that have come out with 75cm+ muscular bodies is a testament to that. And, then you have lone artist like Mori 9, The Voice, JR etc. who so far have only made larger dolls.

      • x 2
    35. Seems like a number of companies have been leaning into the taller dolls, too. Like 75cm or even 80cm. Currently that's too much resin for me. I have 2 72cm dolls (OT for here) and while they're not that much taller than Fei-Lau at 69cm, they feel bigger than that if that makes any sense.

      • x 2
    36. "Bara adjacent BL look" is the best way to put it! I personally like that look, however, I understand those that don't too. I also really like the 'older' look of classic sort of dolls, I just really don't see Dollzone dipping their toes back into that unless it comes back around which hey, it might. Much like fashion maybe trends will repeat and they'll do some kind of 'lookback' or ... rerelease??

      • x 1
    37. I have terrible weakness for the old school sculpts. I don't mind the "bara adjacent BL look" but it needs to fit with a specific character for my purposes.

      • x 1
    38. @sovayne - Oooooh he looks stunning! :D Komorebi does wonderful work.

I'm quite sad that DZ seems to have fallen out of popularity over the last few years. They seemed to be everywhere back when I started collecting, but now they've become quite...not hard to find...just uncommon. The older sculpts especially.

      • x 2
    39. They don't seem to have as many new releases as they used to. Not saying they need to pump out new sculpts every month but it feels like they're only releasing maybe one or two new sculpts per year. And then there's the giant cull they did not long ago. Finding the old sculpts is difficult but I recall seeing a Brant in the MP here recently so they do pop up now and again.

      • x 1
    40. Yes, I agree the style/aesthetic of dolls has definitely changed. When I first got into this hobby, dolls had the old Yaoi aesthetic, i.e., slender, pretty, and sort of feminine. The current popular aesthetic seems to be this “Bara adjacent BL look” which calls for hyper-masculine bodies with huge muscles, and tiny heads. (Thank you @Cloudedmind for your explanation of the current doll aesthetic. I totally get it now.:thumbup)

I think with the right facial sculpt the bara adjacent BL look is fine, even drool-worthy. But, I’ve seen some facial sculpts that look very adolescent that have these big, over-developed bodies. So not my cup of tea. :frownyblush:

      • x 2
    41. It is a bit jarring to see a soft, young-ish face paired with a heavily muscled body. I mean, if that's your jam, have at and enjoy. It's not a look I generally find appealing. That being said, I do have some boys who have a soft/gentle face but a jacked body. Khale (Leeke Khal) is like that. Soft, beautiful (adult) face, totally ripped body (he's on the old Leeke muscle body). But you'd never know he looks like that until you get him naked as he tends to wear pastel colours and flowing robes that hide his body shape.

It seems like a lot of companies are sliding over into the more realistic sculpts and leaving the more anime/yaoi aesthetic at the wayside. I suppose it's what is selling now and if they want to stay in business, well, you need to give the customers what they want. I can't talk too hard against the more realistic sculpts as I own a fair number but the old anime/yaoi aesthetic will always have a tender place in my heart because that's what initially got me into the hobby.

      • x 2
    42. Haha, glad you guys enjoyed my phrasing. Not, to get to off topic, but as an aside, I do find it interesting that a lot of Chinese BL/yaoi manhuas/comics still mostly feature the more slim body types for their BL leads, and the "bara adjacent look" is more prominent in Korean BL manhwas/comics. Yet, the reverse seems to be true when it comes to a lot of larger male doll bodies being made.

But, yeah, I don't hate the look. Goodness knows I read enough BL with male characters with the same look. And, I did just buy a full Lucius from DZ. I just wish there was more variety of styles in the 72-77cm size. Like I wish someone would do a body with a similar aesthetic to DF-H's 72cm body, but with a 12-13cm neck. So far most of our choices are crispy muscles or extra crispy muscles. lol

      • x 5
    43. Sounds like there needs to be a tall stick boy in the 72-77cm size to go with the tall thicc boys that currently reside there.

      • x 2
    44. I desperately want a tall thicc boy - and I mean THICC, no defined muscles, just curvy and plump

      • x 2
    45. Oh I 100% agree!! I want a curvy boy!!
I know there's a mature mini out there from a different company with a very soft shape, but ooooh I'd sell my soul for an SD with curves. :D

      • x 1
    46. Oooooh! Curvy and plump! Oh my! What would that look like? :blush

    47. I think Argonautica does a more filled out SD girl but no boy as far as I know. Dr. Krow has a very realistic curvy girl but I think she's MSD in size? But again, no boy. Huli recently did a very thicc and sturdy boy but he's modeled after the Tolkien dwarves (I think) and I believe he's MSD.

I think most companies are afraid to slide into the chonky side of things regardless of whether they're female or male sculpts. Clothing them with off-the-rack stuff would be hard. You'd need to be very careful in the sculpting of the fluffy aspect so as not to impede movement/posing. The target audience for such a sculpt is likely much smaller than the buyers of the standard dolls. It's considerable time and money to make a new sculpt and if it doesn't sell... well there's no getting those resources back.

      • x 2
    48. I want a doll that looks like Orange (adultish content warning)

      • x 1
    49. maybe the Meeksdoll Labella's boys for a softer male body? i think only the newest DZ head on the beefcake bod would work though with a 13cm neck since they are big like a ID75.

also, i'm kinda excited, i scored a Raymond and a Robin. :love
i never had a chance before they were discontinued, so happy they can join my Isaac's and Leslie.

i think my other DZ's fall more under the slimmer 68 category. maybe i'll find a Gene eventually, i have his body for another hybrid LOL i like all the variety, it's fun to have different looks, but those new big fellas look heavy

      • x 2
    50. Wow! Congrats Grimalkin! I’m so excited for you! You got a Raymond and a Robin! Super WOW! That is a total score! :dance Robin is kinda rare, isn’t he? I don’t recall seeing a lot of him around.

You lucky thing! That will be quite the stud-stable of tall gorgeous Dollzone boys. (Hot boy resin!:love)

      Looking forward to pictures! :aeyepop:

edit - p.s. realised the fox bust went with Devon... oops but i sure looked at that little fox and Robin so many times LOL

    53. I don't think Robin was available all that long before DZ axed him, which is really unfortunate. Sometimes people need to see owner pictures before they really fall for a sculpt, and with how long DZ wait times can be, I bet there wasn't that many owner pictures out there before he got the ax

      • x 2
    54. that discontinuation period was so sad, since DC felled a bunch around the same time as well. no way to prioritize or plan.

@Girrl - you're so right though, sometimes a sculpt i didn't look twice at in company shots is amazing in the hands of an owner and suddenly, i'm obsessed with their possibilities :3nodding:

      • x 1
    55. I remember, during that time, I was obsessed with DZ Leslie, but I just couldn’t wrangle the funds to get him. And, on top of that, I was hesitant because Dollzone was going through a period where their face-ups looked nothing like the face-ups in the promotion pictures. I had that happen with the DZ Oliver I purchased, so disappointing.

I saw some owner photos of Leslie, and sadly, he never looked like his promo pix. By the time I got the courage, and the funds, to buy him he was discontinued. :...(

    56. Wasn't Leslie originally released around the same time as Raymond?

      • x 2
    57. Yes they were released together I think! I’m excited to get a Raymond of my own finally. He was a strong contender for a new shell for Val back in the day, but he’s a little too gaunt for him. But he’s perfect for Zai, who’s partnered with Jazz (my Stramonium) and I have both her and their daughter at home.

      Edit:

Raymond & Leslie – BJD Collectasy a release article of them. I didn’t realize it’s been since December of 2012 that they were released, so the first ones should have arrived in 2013

    58. I was drawn to the Gene body with the wings and claws because weird/unusual is my jam. But I had no character for him so passed. There was a grey Gene (and of course I'm weak to coloured resin) in the MP for what seemed like forever ages ago and I visited him a fair bit but still no character so I just admired him from afar. He also had the full default blushing and I didn't like it and would've wiped it and that kinda seems... I dunno, wasteful? I felt a bit bad for him that he was just sitting there for so long. He was fairly priced and it was like please, somebody love me and take me home. But I'm weird that way.

As a side note, no matter how much I like the look of wings, it's an utter PITA to dress a doll that has them. I have several winged dolls (and characters) and unless you make specific shirts/coats for them or don't mind cutting into existing clothes, you're going to mutter under your breath frequently when you need to dress them. All my winged boys except 1 have magnet/slotted wings so they can wear normal stuff if you leave the wings off. My DV Bethel has strung wings so his shirts will need to be custom for him as there's no way I'm unstringing his wings every time I want to change his shirt (especially since they're strung very tight).

      • x 3
    59. i got lucky i guess for Leslie, he was in stock and on clearance with a dealer well past the last date of offering by DZ, and layaway helped me there. but he's blank. i know what you mean about the faceups though, my Isaac's is similar to the company pics, but definitely different and sort of, well, blurry might be the best word. (i'm still over the moon that he got to join my crew).

The other sculpt i thought was similar to Leslie is Charmdoll's boy JianLi (esp. JianLi-3 and JianLi original) but after seeing the different versions of him, i think it's all in the faceup. Alice's has 3 versions of him showing, and the JianLi-3 listing is crazy how much the profile is similar, i wondered if it was by the same sculptor tbh.

I'm really looking forward to seeing your rendition of Raymond and how he fits in with your group :3nodding:

that is so funny! i was having the exact same thoughts about that grey Gene when he was for sale! I don't think i could have made myself wipe him either. Can confirm the wings are a PITA, they are humongous. and even after having both strung and magnet types and all the clothing problems, i still wind up with more wings
