Dollzone Discussion ~ 60 and 70cm ~ Part VIII

Oh these are brilliant tips! Thank you!! Next time I have a free day I'm going to test out the bag idea, I'm sure there's a few my grandmother has hidden away in places. There may also be some spare bathroom tiles in the garage. I'll have to have a dig around next time I'm in there.

Thank you I might do a dolly wardrobe clean out and see if that helps before I get too drastic. I really want all my crew to stay with me. Especially Az.

I do need to take some new photos of him (and uh, bring out Salmarnir for a while, he's been locked in a box for two years now and I feel like the old demon would be getting grumpy about it )! Hopefully soon!

 

Quiet and Insane, I was wondering about Salmarnir, too. We haven't seen him in ages. He's so magnificent with that great horn coming out of his shoulder. That was such an original and evocative design. I love demons!

They're lovely, but 58cm is too short for my collection - I've got a bunch of 65cm gals, which I've established as my "average" size, and my short girls are all already shelled.
Same thing goes for the guys, 72cm-75cm is my established "average," which puts a lot of dolls that DZ hasn't discontinued on the too short for my collection list

 

The girl with light hair is mesmerizing. I love her slightly parted lips.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the money to get her at this time. It’s a bummer she’s limited.

 

He's around! I just miss Azrael too much when I swap them around, plus I'm lazy and can't always be bothered stringing that arm of his. I'll pull him out again at some point.

The new dolls are lovely! But thankfully, they're not tempting me at all. *phew*

 

I kind of thought that too for awhile. But I've since merged my 58cm girl in with my 65cm and 68cm girls. I figured in real life people some people are short lol...so it kinda works.

I really like those new girls. They remind me of the older sculpts before the big purge and new direction a number of years ago.

@blueboy57 - I love your Helen, she's gorgeous. I have a Stramonium at home on the 62cm body. I'm still sad I could never snag a 65cm girl from DZ way back when...

I'm safe from the discontinuation this time, as I already have an April at home (which is currently bodyless as my sister wants to sew outfits for her...). I do really want her back in full again as it's been over 6 months now since her body has gone to my sister's and she hasn't even started

IzabethS Thanks Your Stramonium is awesome! Love the SciFi look. Did you make her arm? And that wig is so cool. I was looking for a wig like that for one of my other girls.

Yeahh... this is the third year in a row she's wanted to sew for my dolls. She always intends for it to be a Christmas gift, but after 6 months I usually take my dolls back because I miss them... She has the body of Emilia (my DZ April) and of one of my wife's dolls...

Thank you! The arm is actually from Ringdoll, and quite oversized for her, but since it's a prosthetic I actually like it being bigger! And the wig is from Etsy (FantasyDolls) in Size 8, sadly she only has 2 left in that size, one in blue black and another in blonde. But I definitely love the wig! It's hardcap, but fits on Jazz's huge noggin just fine

 

Sorry, my last comment came off sounding snarky. I certainly didn’t mean for it to sound that way. What I meant was a “Gold Star” for good intentions. Right?

@Zacarias - Oh those eyes are so pretty! Is it just the light or are they two different shades of gold?

Is it just me? I can’t see the first two pictures. I’m only seeing a red X inside a blue image box.

 

I plan on getting R Black before they're discontinued. I'm smitten with her beautiful face.

Also I absolutely love how magnificently my last DZ (Grey) poses so I'm eager to add another to my crew.

 

@Quiet and Insane:Thanks. They are two different shades of gold. Light gold in the middle with dark gold around the outside. The pupil is also gold. Here is a better picture of just the eyes.

@Rabbit-moon: Thanks. Oh there is only the one photo. I was trying to figure out why my images are always broken when I post them. Den if Angels suggested to try uploading them to public. So, I uploaded it as public but it still didn't work, then I got rude comments on the photo, so I set it to private but it glitched out my post and now I can't get rid of the broken images.


@TokyoLynn : I really like both R White and R Black and probably would have gotten R White if she had been 65+ cm.

 

The eyes are gorgeous! One thing I've heard about sharing images on DoA is to keep them under 2MB in size, or they'll end up broken. I don't know how much that really applies, as my small images (800x600px and under 1MB in size) still wind up as broken images...

I realized that I may not have posted Emilia's new faceup, she's my April elf and I finally like her faceup!

@IzabethS ohhh I like your Emilia so much, her faceup is wonderful! Actually, I've almost snatched an April myself during discontinuation event but finally decided not to.

 

@Zacarias They're both stunning but yeah, definitely on the short side. It works out for me though as the character I'm shelling is shorter. Haha

 

Thank you! Despite having her already I have been stupidly tempted by purple ones on the secondhand market. She just looks so pretty in purple, but I have no need to have her double…
I really like her body as well, and that she still has the Dollzone vibes. I really need to do a comparison of her to my wife’s original April on the first generation 58cm body from way back when!

Ah yeah, the purple is really tempting, but I don't think I can spend that much money now... I was actually going to go for a fullset option but recently Dollzone faceups and fullsets have been turning out different in reality than in promo pictures so I was afraid I'd be disappointed.
Ohhh, it would be really interesting to see! To be honest, I didn't even know there was another version of April!

 

@Quiet and Insane - thank you! It only took me 4 tries to get her to a point where I’m satisfied with the Faceup

@elsie_f - yeah I’ve heard that too, though I am not interested in company faceups or full sets as i need to paint my dolls myself to bond with them. The original April looks nothing like the current one, i think they just reused the name honestly. I can snap a picture of her if you like? I can’t do a comparison until I get Emilia’s body back, but at least I can do that

 

@IzabethS - I wish I had the patience/time to paint a faceup lol. But the lady who painted my DZ Helen as well as my RS Ling...is just top notch. Like idk how she gets the skin to look so real...the pictures just don't do her justice. So I'll happily pay her whatever she wants to have her do paint all my dolls lol. I'm honestly considering wiping some of my company faceups and sending them to her. I used to paint wargame minis (think Warhammer...the guys Henry Cavil always talks about) but something about painting a face, I just cant do it. Plus I don't wear makeup in real life so idk it just doesn't click in my mind lol.

@IzabethS - I get it, although for me it's vice versa: most of the time I can't see the potential of the blanc sculpt and I fall in love with a certain faceup, be it a company one or a custom on the second-hand market; and I'm at a very beginner level of painting dolls myself.
So, about expectation-reality thing: I was fascinated by Gray's fullset - but when he came, his faceup turned out to be much more intense and the costume was far simpler... So Gray's personality became different from what I had imagined, and I ended up giving most parts of the costume to another doll. I love him anyway! But I don't trust Dollzone's promo photos anymore
Yeah, it would be interesting to see who they used to call April before this one!

 

I'm glad you have a good faceup artist to work with! I find painting BJDs more relaxing than tabletop minis, and with my shaky hands doing those itty bitty details would be a nightmare for me. But I do love painting BJDs of all sizes, the smallest one I've painted so far was only 5cm big, with the head roughly the size of my thumbnail.
I am in full support of you wiping the company faceups and getting your faceup artist to repaint your dolls, there's just something magical about being able to get exactly what you want.

Thank you!! I really love her even if she was an impulse purchase back in 2018 I think? I really wanted the Daomiao event doll (but on a girl body) so I had to come up with enough items to buy to qualify for it!

That's okay too, not everyone can look at a blank sculpt and see the different possibilites in it. I still remember when I got my DC Snow Nymph, she looked like an alien all blank and stuff! But I could still see my OC Melody in her, and she's now the most human looking Snow Nymph around.

Whoops, I wandered off and forgot to take a picture of the OG April, so I snapped it just now and here she is!


Her Faceup is a modified default (I added freckles). She was a first anniversary gift from me to my wife (back then girlfriend), but she’d been in stock a while as a full set at Mint on Card. We sold the full set outfit as once my wife realized what character she was, she had no more use for the poofy outfit she came with.

 

@IzabethS - it's a great ability to see a future OC in a blank sculpt like that! I usually accumulate a lot of others' images in my head and then gain a vision of how I want this sculpt to look like... and see it blank and think "what are you" Although once I was completely stunned by a blank sculpt (it was a DIM Annabeth, I still have them blank but I want to paint them myself)

Thank you for the photo of original April! She looks so sweet, and I like the freckles and her outfit and the bird! What's her name? Also, it's so cute to give a doll as an anniversary gift (my relationship goals hehe).

Oh curious. Are they re-releases of the previous Egyptian themed dolls? They look like very similar sculpts to me.

 

They are pretty cool, but they are too big for me. 70-71cm is my maximum height now.

I agree with Quiet and Insane, they do look familiar.

 

I suspect so, except on slightly bigger bodies (I think the previous Egyptian themed dolls were on the 68cm bodies?)

 

I agree, they are the same heads, but looks like more resin colour choices too, and you can still choose either the B-68 or the B-70
i am waiting to hear if they only offer the head or if the body can be cast in black resin.

 

Ooh a full black resin doll would be incredible (but difficult to work with potentially?)

 

My darker gray dolls are challenging to photograph sometimes, but I live in a dim cave of an apartment in a city where it's frequently overcast - my white/light resin dolls are sometimes equally challenging to photograph when I visit brighter, sunnier places, so the challenge lies in the available lighting. Also, isn't it more obvious when sealant gets cloudy on darker resin?
I agree with @Quiet and Insane - a full black resin doll would be incredible, but potentially very difficult to work with. Although, after 2 very expensive doll purchases already this year, and my unfortunate recent addiction to buying silk thread (omg, so much silk thread, why am I doing this to myself??), I think I'll be sitting this one out (sadly)

 

There are photos on Legend Doll and Denver Doll Emporium that show the dog doll with black resin hands. So, I am hoping that the entire body is available in black resin, and that the photographs of the body just chose a lighter resin to model in order to show off the body better.

Legend Doll has some instructions about not using matte sealant on the black resin. Does anyone know what I should use instead?

 

@Zacarias - that sounds pretty promising about the hands! i am hoping to hear back soon as well, and will share anything new i learn here.

about the sealant, maybe going with some of the same ideas used for the dark brown/tans would work, to use the sponge on method of the liquid matte medium? I saw some reviews where folks mentioned it does not frost quite as much on the darker tones. I'll be facing this soon with dark brown and a dark red soon... experiments incoming....

@Zacarias - I got word back that the B68-001 and the B70-004 bodies can be made in black resin this time! same cost extra as grey & tan. decided to go with the slim myself since i've the WS version already - to mix & match.

@Grimalkin : Oh that's wonderful. Thanks for the update. What doll did you decide to get? I am still trying to decide between the dog or cat. I thought I wanted the dog but more I look at the cat the more I like that one.

@Zacarias i ordered the dog on the B68 all in the black. should be interesting! i have the little ceramic knives for seam work, so hopefully i won't have to sand anything and can keep his resin looking good.

i do wish i'd waffled a tad longer as the Feather Fox in @SteamWitch 's link is amazing and he can be ordered in the black too... thanks for sharing the link!

but, at least now i can have my dog and cat twins with light and dark

If you really regret not waiting for the feathered fox you could message the dealer and see if you could change your order. I doubt Dollzone has started working on it.

Oh would you be able to post a picture of your cat? I would love to see owner pictures.

 

@Zacarias - I really do want the Dog in black. i just don't think i can do the fox with body right now due to other sins... not going to lie though, 'tis asking after the head by itself

soooo... the cats are still unpainted... i wanted to get the bodies picked out and the dog twins so i could make them complement each other. i'm sloooow to style.... glacier speeds... but i did snap some when testing bodies, and this one was funny... so spoiler-ing since #iswearmydollshaveclothes i hope can do this group justice though.

@Grimalkin : Thanks for sharing a photo of your doll. I just love that picture it honestly looks like he was in the middle of playing with a string hanging down when the photo was taken.

The cat head is so pretty. I honestly don't know what to do. There are too many dolls I love being released at the same time.
