Dollshe Discussion - Part Twelve

Apr 15, 2017

    1. @tinyseams Oh that's a really cool idea, using scarves! I'll have to be on the look out next time I'm thrifting!

@MJKKJM Oh wow, your Khan is beautiful. He's so big! His jointed dong - does it look natural when it is up? I'm curious, never seen a doll with an erect option before!

    2. What a beautiful resin colour! Oh my goodness, it's so smooth even though it's such a vivid blue!

    3. When you go to 2nd hand stores, also check out the area that has cloth napkins. You can generally get enough fabric for a shirt from 2 napkins and possibly a pair of shorts for the bigger guys with another 2 napkins (assuming the shirt has long sleeves, short sleeves and shorts is no problem with 4 napkins). With a 60/64cm dude, you can typically squeak out a pair of pants as long as you plan carefully.

I've made several outfits for my guy using napkins from a 2nd hand store. Typically the pattern are smaller, too, so more in scale for dolls. I'd also made outfits from curtain valances from the dollar store and table runners from both the dollar store and the 2nd hand store. It usually gives you just enough to make something without a ton of left over fabric and is pretty darn easy on the wallet. For just $2 or $3 I can get enough fabric that's usually pretty interesting and take advantage of edges that are already hemmed. Bandanas and scarves are also good for fabric from the dollar store. If you want to make t-shirts, the men's cotton/spandex briefs at the dollar store are the perfect scale fabric-wise and amount for that even for the big boys and at like... $2/pair, way cheaper than buying the same thing at the fabric store.

    4. His thingy can spin around like 360 degrees, it's actually really fun to just wiggle it around :wiggle.

    5. OMG! I just about DIED laughing!!! :nowords::lol::blush:mwahaha

    6. I have a friend who has a doll with a twirlie dick. It is its own amusement.

    7. Um, yeah.

    8. Okeee.... so.... That was a fun conversation! I can feel everyone shifting uneasily, and trying not to meet other people's eyes... lolz

To change the... er... topic... I'll just post a photo here:

doo... tee... doo... Here we go...

And... uh... yes... ahem... So, this is my Grown Bermann OE head (Pure Oriental) on the Infiniti Doll SID boy body (2010, NS) I've had him on for the past month and a half. Still no faceup, due to reasons.... BUT! I did make him this glammy-glam cocoon-shawl cardigan to froof around in. Rest of photos HERE. A couple of folks said he looks like David Bowie in it... or something? Heheh...

The body measurements of ID SID are very similar to those of a classic Hound, except for the height, torso length, arm length and leg length. This body can wear Hound shirts and pants though, because the shoulder width and chest and waist measurements are so close. The pants have to be hemmed or rolled up a bit. Therefore this cardigan can be worn by classic Hound bodies too, as it's kinda over-sized anyway.

Despite the head's good fit on this body, looking at this guy is playing havoc with my brain - I'm just so used to seeing Bermanns on the tall, over-long, lanky body of the classic Hound or classic Bermann, that this body makes him look stubby somehow... weird old programming, I guess. Therefore, I'm seriously waffling over buying him another body. It'll either be a second-hand classic or updated Hound body or a Dollstown 17 yr boy body in Oriental resin... Of course, the DT17 body wouldn't be particularly lanky... It's a bit on the broad-shoulders end of things... hmm... :)

If I knew for sure that Immortality of Soul NS was a decent match to Pure Oriental, I'd buy one of their 66cm (class 70) bodies, as they have a tall lanky look and they're on sale right now.

      • x 1
    9. I like him on that body but I'm also not used to seeing Bermans, lanky or otherwise so... I would put out there that if the body is giving you WTF?! moments when you look at him even after 1.5 months, you just might need to get him something more fitting for him to be who he really is to you.

I feel for you on the right body issue. I honestly thought Wu-Tyr (Orijean) would be fine on the buff Miro body. He looked good proportion-wise and the resin match was actually a touch closer than the match between his new Dollshe body and head (it's still very, very close but older head/brand new body...). But Wu-Tyr was all just no. Not happening. Thus the new body, which he's very happy with because it is sleek and what he needed to be who he is.

    10. Yeah... I hear you... I just can't get over how weird that is though! I've just done a body comparison on that comparison heaven website, with the 70cm classic Hound body, the Pure body, and the Infiniti Doll SID body (the one I'm using right now). Really, judging from that, the only difference is the length of the legs, slight difference in length of the neck, and slight difference in length of the arms. They can basically wear each other's shirts, no problem, and even pant (with small pant-leg adjustments). I'm actually wondering if it'll suddenly all look ok if I just suede the neck opening, which will raise the head ever so slightly on top of the neck... Might be worth trying (even just for the practicality).

    11. I can tell you that made all the difference in an off topic to this thread doll of mine, who didn't look like herself until I had probably a solid half inch of hot glue in her neck. It can make a spectacular difference!

    12. Well... There we go... I guess I'll have to try that first and see if it resolves the issue for me. After all, I already have that body. It's a good body, that I don't plan to pass on either, so... maybe? Even just as a temporary good solution, until I am ready to buy yet another body. Thanks!

    13. No problem! Hope it helps!

    14. The funniest little things sometimes help to make a character click together. I hope a hot glue trick does the job for you. Your wallet would certainly be happier, I think, if that was all it took to make that body right for your guy.

    15. Butting in to ask tedious questions.

The last discount voucher. Am I right in thinking that it is 30% off the whole order (like last time) or is it 30% off one item in the order? If the latter, can you specify which you want the discount from? I am finally getting around to ordering a body for one thing and head and hands for another and it would make sense to discount the body. And does it activate automatically, or do you have to message in the Q&A? I really should have been paying attention at the time, when I was too busy saying I would never do this again.

And membership rankings. I currently own five full Dollshes, so I guess that means I am still on bronze. I will soon have a replacement Saint, but head only (on some other body, to be decided) and a 28M body for my Iple Luo. I assume these bits of doll don't count, only a full doll? And what happens if you sell one? Do you do the honest thing and tell Dollshe that one has moved on? I would feel pretty bad saying "Hey! I didn't want your doll any more, so I sold it!", but perhaps worse getting illegitimate discounts.

      TIA

    16. On the ranking thing, I would cautiously say that it doesn't matter if you've sold a doll on. You paid for it initially and whether it stayed with you for 2 months or 2 years shouldn't make a bit of difference in my opinion. Doll needs/visions change and sometimes what worked at one point no longer does. Or, gods forbid, you need to sell due to financial difficulties.

I have no idea how the ranking is figured out though. I now own 1 full Dollshe boy but the getting of that full doll was a years long process with the head being bought first back in... 2012? and the body this year. So I dunno how that counts (separate purchases for one value or now considered as a full doll since that what I have *shrugs*).

    17. @miffimifster - He looks so cool! I hope the neck sueding helps. I do like that body too and it'd be so much easier on your wallet.

@MadamMauMau - The discount voucher works on the entire cart provided it's only resin you're ordering (no clothes or accessories). You can activate it from your cart or from your "My Account" page just by clicking on the blue banner.

I would say that you'd likely still be on bronze. They just say "more than x" so if you get a sixth then you'd move up to silver, I assume. I cannot for the life of me remember where I read this, but only full dolls actually count. So I bought David, Grant, and Saint as full dolls, but the single David head and the single Pure body bought in separate transactions would not count. I'm not sure about what would happen if you sold one. I guess that they would understand that by nature, this is something that happens in the hobby. As long as you're buying from them, I don't think they'll mind if you eventually decide to sell the doll. But that's just me.

    18. Thanks. That's very useful.

Should I add a Robin to my cart as well, then? Does this never end?!

Well then, I have owned six Dollshes, but have just passed my Saint onto a friend as I am upgrading to the Grown variety. Jeez. That bit is getting too complicated for me! You know what, I am just going with the sales and vouchers discounts and calling that a deal.

ETA: Oh, I missed the sale. The bodies are now only $5 off. Well, bugger. That decides that, then. I will hang onto the voucher in case there is another "proper" sale and try not to spend my dolly sales money until then.

    19. I'd heard rumours that not buying more dolls happens for some people but they're unsubstantiated and I think a myth.

      • x 2
    20. Memberships rankings: when you receive one full doll you qualify for bronze. When you have six dolls it goes up to silver. They did not automatically give me the increase in discount. I had to write to remind them how many dolls I have. Once they give it, the discount applies automatically when I sign into my account and put stuff in the cart. It should not matter if you have sold the doll, they look at the fact that you paid for a full doll., I believe.

    21. What if you haven't bought from them? My first Saint was from Luts (I think. Might have been Iple), when they were selling for Dollshe. My Bernard I got second hand, as they had been discontinued, with no knowledge at that time that the discontinuations were temporary. I think I read someone saying to just send a photo of your horde, but then who's to say you didn't borrow a couple for the photo?

Anyway, all academic as I'm not buying unless there is a proper sale on.

    22. The last chance before discontinued sale extended sale (again) is still ongoing for 2 more days according to the countdown thingy when I just checked it.
I think if you didn't buy from Dollshe directly you may have to show that you have authentic Dollshe COAs but I don't really know. You might just be screwed. Would not surprise me at all either way.

    23. Well, it says "sale", but it is now only 1% off, so effectively back up to full price. My fault for taking so long to collect the money.

ETA: It's just changed. It was 1% reduction, but now it's c 30% reduction on most things (and now no reduction on the 18M heads), but I'm not sure the starting prices are the same as they were. I am just so confused.

ETA2: No, it's 1% reduction. I actually have no idea what just went on and whether the site changed or I was looking in two, separate areas, but I'm sure the 28M body has always been $495/500, but that the starting price was $500 (so, a 1% reduction got it to $495) but was then something like $700 (so, an apparent 29% reduction got it to $500). OK. I need a little sit down now.

ETA3: Ah! Sorted it. Right. The 1% discount is my bronze discount and the two different starting prices are when you look at the page logged in and not logged in. Wow! That was confusing!

    24. I know that I have enough Dollshe to qualify for Gold (I'm at silver now) and despite documenting if for them multiple times he won't upgrade me, so...I dunno.

    25. Well the 28m body which is $700 regular is for sale for $500 when I check it so that is 29% off. If you are getting a different price then the website is showing me undeserved favoritism. And that is without logging in so sans my shiny silver discount.
You probably just thought $500 was the regular price because of the almost continuous sale periods but as someone who actually paid full price (poor sucker) at one time I am painfully aware of the "normal price". Never going to be sucked into that again.

    26. And that regular pricing for a body is what made me jump so hard for the sale I took part in (150 pieces, 49% off). Any cash savings I can scrounge up are to be pounced on like a rabid dire wolf because the CAN$ sucks bad, especially once you start getting into the higher dollar values. A $700US body would take a painful $900CAN from my wallet and the only reason it's not more is that the dollar has hit a high today ($0.78 whoot!). Generally, it's been trading at around $0.72 for a very long time, which jumps the price for me to $975CAN.

      • x 1
    27. Walter, yes, the current price remains the same whether you are logged in or not. It's the starter price that changes. When you are logged out, it is given as the full, deeply painful $700. When you are logged in, it is the still hefty $500.

Were the 18Ms in the sale originally? I'm sure I saw the heads at a reduced price. But, you know what, I have confused myself so much already today with all this logging in and logging out that I'm not sure I can stand any more!

And the pound is also crippled, what with all that Brexit bollocks, so all doll spending has to be done VERY carefully.

    28. The CAN$ has sucked and blown (and not in the fun way) for years *sigh*. At one point a few years ago it was trading at something like $1CAN=$0.63US, which was hideously painful when it can to buying anything outside of Canada. Whenever I save for a doll, I automatically add at least 1/3 more to the price in order to cover exchange and the dreaded Customs fees. Because our dollar is unexpectedly high right now *snorts at $0.78 being considered high*, I'm actually toying with the idea of getting a body (OT for this thread) at the same time I make a full doll purchase just to try and take advantage of the slightly better exchange.

    29. Just returned from driving my mom to her <gulp> 60th High School reunion. I'm glad you folks mentioned the end of the sale extension. I have ordered an Ausley Love head in honey peach, or whatever that's called, to go with the absolutely exquisite body I purchased from a list member earlier this summer. I was tempted to get a Bernard head, too, but I'm attempting to be good.

    30. :yawn :roll:Likely story, Julie. Attempting to be good.

    31. Hahahah... Dollshe dolls are like potato chips - You can't just have one. :whee::mwahaha

      • x 1
    32. Yes, the Grown 18Ms were included in the 30% Anniversary Sale originally, but excluded from the 10 days extension of the 30% sale. That extension only applies to the dolls that are getting "discontinued", so the 28M Classic and Fashion lines, the 26F Classic and Fashion lines, Classic and Fashion Arsene, 8B Classic line and 6F Classic line. I hope this clears things up. :)

    33. Dolls in general are like potato chips *nods*. How many of us said we'd have just one or two? I said it myself and I have over 40 now. I also thought I'd never have a Dollshe because of price yet now I do. I don't know if I'll get another down the road but I wouldn't write off the possibility of it. Especially those awesome fashion sized boys.

    34. @BJDivas, the workings of the Dollshe mind remain impenetrable. OK. I am going to risk waiting on the 18M heads being on sale next, I think. I might live to regret that, but ah well.

I keep saying that this Dollshe will be my last, because of the waiting times. Then I do it again... TBH, my Dollshes are amongst my best loved dollies, with the 1:4 scale ones taking over from the tall boys and girls in a way I couldn't have foreseen. Beware the insidious charm of the Dollshe!

    35. @MadamMauMau - You're quite welcome. I got a payment confirmation email today so the discounts do indeed stack.

@BJDivas - That's strange. I had a friend ask DollShe what exactly was being discontinued from the 18M line and it seems that it's all of them. Unless they just mistranslated? But it seems that twice they've said it's all of them, not just Arsene. I'm totally confused now. Not that it matters. I don't need another Saint. Not just yet. I must refrain.

    36. I love the convenience of quarter scale. I have never owned a big doll but I can just imagine how much room you would need to display them and storing big clothes is another problem. I get the idea of seeing all the details more clearly. Maybe I would want a big doll if I was planning to own only one doll but the Dollshes are addicting. I totally agree! I am fighting with myself to order another one before the sale ends.

    37. 1/4 size is easier on all kinds of levels from storing to transporting to your wallet. I started out with 1/4 but my collection now spans a very wide range from 5cm to 68cm. I don't think I'd want to go bigger than 70cm, but I've also learned never to say never.

    38. Miffimister -- if only it were only one. I have well over three figures in dolls here, and ... 18? 19? DollShe dolls plus Venitu, with King Corey to come if/when the review award dolls do materialize. Some were purchased secondary market, but I am at Gold level with DollShe in my own right. The only one I'm totally unsure of is the one 1/4 size Grant Philippe. I'm not sure whether he will stay or go, because his scale does not fit with anybody -- not even my aGatti pair. <sighs>

    39. The obvious solution is to get more 1/4 scale Dollshes, Julie. Just trying to be helpful here. Lol

      • x 1
    40. @Julie M I'm agog at that number of Dollshe dolls within a single collection as well as being over the 100 doll mark in general. Where do you put them all? Grant Philippe is a handsome guy and it would be a shame if he needed to move on. I hope he finds a place within your group. You never know what'll happen....

I fully intended to sell the Leeke Khal fullset I won at a charity raffle several years ago. Only... 3 days later I knew exactly who he was and his entire back story and selling him was not an option at all. He's actually indirectly responsible for my getting the Dollshe boy I have now as getting Khale had me creating a brand new world for him and Wu-Tyr (Orijean) is one of the gods that populates that world.

      • x 1
    41. It's always an enigma with Dollshe, isn't it? I do believe it's an error somewhere in communication, as the Grown 18M aren't even all finished yet and their prices have gone back to non-sale prices on Dollshe's website with no countdown timer. On the other hand, Arsene, like the full lines that are being discontinued, has the 30% discount applied as well as the countdown timer. Not that Dollshe's website is always 100% reliable either :sweat, but based on what I've heard, that seems to be the case.

      • x 1
    42. Yeah, I gotta admit, I was bought in by the "Discontinuing! Extension! Act now!" from Dollshe and took the plunge on a pair of heads. I only halfway believe it, but honestly... I'm tired of dolls I want being discontinued before I can get my grubby little hands on them.

    43. When I bought the Orijean head, it was during a "final stock clearance" sale and it was supposed to be discontinued. That was back in 2015. So... yeah. I don't quite believe Dollshe when he says that something is being discontinued and never offered again.

So far, I've been able to resist the fashion line dolls but I think I'd be in serious trouble if there was a fashion size Orijean available. There's just something about the alien weirdness of it that appeals to me big time. I really do like the looks of the Saint sculpt, too.

    44. iron dog ... you mean one is supposed to have surfaces in one's house for things like ... oh, I don't know ... eating meals and sitting down?

    45. Well, as long as you have a space on the couch to sit with your laptop, I think you're okay. I mean, you can eat while browsing doll sites, right?

    47. Hey, does anyone know anything that will fit the Mystic body decently enough so I can buy my Saint some clothes before he shows up (though like who knows when that will be)? I'll probably try to sew him some things but I'm so time poor right now it'd be good for him to have one outfit he can wear until I get my life together.

    48. Umm so I have a weird question... my beautiful blue Hound is beautiful and all, but he's got so much white powder in his joints!! I noticed it when I first opened him and it wipes off easy enough, nothing seemed damaged or scraped. But it keeps appearing in the joints that I move around >_> Is this normal? Should I be scared and suede him immediately?? :horror: He doesn't seem strung too tight... but maybe the joints are grinding a bit too much?

    49. This happened with my caramel brown Bernard! Hoping it's just dust in the stringing channels...

    50. Most likely, it's just sanded down resin from when the parts were finished up. A quick blow through the stringing channels will probably get most of it out, if not definitely a quick bath will.

    51. I'd play it safe and suede him to protect the lovely resin.

    52. I am planning to do some body blushing anyway, so I guess I'll just give him a bath all over and suede him while I'm at it!! Hopefully he'll be okay for another week until I can work on it. :shudder

    53. @BJDivas - I thought that was about right. I mean he's not even shown us the grey versions of some of the Grown boys yet. I did notice that only the full Arsene appears to have the discount. Or maybe I'm just blind. I still live in hope I can one day get a Saint on that body. Who really even knows? Ah well. Thanks anyway. :)

@overlordu - My pale tan guy does that too. I've not washed him yet, but it's been over a year and he seems fine. I've also seen other, much older pale tan dolls with the same thing happening and there's nothing wrong with the doll.

    54. I haven't noticed any dust from my new body in pure oriental so maybe it's a thing with the coloured resin only?

And you guys are not being helpful, you know. Now I'm thinking that a fashion-sized saint would be a nice sculpt to have for a character I was pretty sure I knew what sculpt he was going to be. So not helpful (I love you guys anyways).

      • x 1
    55. The dust seems more noticeable in the colorful resin dolls but I don't think it's anything harmful at all. I just think of my dolls of color as having ashy knees lol.

    56. Isn't the 'dust' the powder that's used to help release the cast item from the mold? My first doll was very 'dusty' and I asked Cerberus Project about it.
(there was no Fairyland or online Luts back then) That was their answer - only more detailed.

      :daisy

    57. Mold release agent is definitely a likely possibility! There are some that are aerosols, and leave no residue, but they're a bit tricky to use and it's hard to know if you have enough. Powdered release agents are more reliable in my experience--I use talcum (or a pearl powder if I want that pearl color in my cast), but there are also powders formulated specifically for use as a release agent. A good scrub or a VERY light sand should easily get rid of it if that's what it is.
