Dollmore Lusion Discussion - Part V!

Aug 13, 2014

    1. There you go!

I bet they had a lot of stain-removal to do - or perhap they had removable cuffs they changed out when necessary

The London Hospital nurses uniforms in the fourtes and fifties had sort puffed sleeves for the Nurses and Student Nurses:
      https://i.pinimg.com/originals/a0/63/5e/a0635e45a0b8e77c9fc8c8cb7e37efa4.jpg

And long or short sleeves with for the Ward Sisters (the long sleeve parts were detachable):

The puff sleeve nurses dresses are actually very pretty, I'm sure my Daisy Bacon would look lovely in one, and would look adorable with the apron and cap added for the fll-on nurse effect.

    2. I just posted my surgical cap pattern in Workshop: Pattern: Sewing. The set-in sleeve still needs work. I'm on my 8th try for that. Hope to post the shirt pattern soon.
Thanks to @Teddy for encouraging me!

    3. I hope you don't mind some constructive criticism on the top? I didn't find anything in the workshop for the top, but if there is I'll whisk this off over there. Okay, to the top. The neckline looks great but could stand to go a little deeper and a little wider at the neck maybe? I can't really offer much help on the sleeve ATM... Sorry :/

    4. I think the sleeve would be easier if you extend the shoulder a bit so the top of the sleeve is over the top of the arm. Then you won't need to ease in as much fabric as the cap of the sleeve can be shorter.

    5. Oh, she's looking sweet! All ready to go into Theatre and perform an operation. And I see you got another couple of bits of good advice too.

I have to say, you're much more patient and persistent than I would be - I'd have given up well beofr I got to attempt number eight.

    6. I really love the fact she's going for it. I'm going to get that surgical cap pattern for Sparrow while I work on yet another wig for her.

    7. @Teddy Thank you! Maybe stubbornness is a virtue or...maybe it's OCD!
@nancy_schroeder_ca Thanks for a great hint! I'll look at altering the shoulder line.
@psychicandroid Sorry for the confusion! The top hasn't been posted yet due to sleeve issues. You're right about the neckline needing to look as though Lusion could pull it over her head like humans do. I'll work on that, too. The top actually opens all the way in the back for convenience. Thanks for the feedback. If you make one, please post a photo! I'd love to see it!

    8. No problem chica! And I def. will post a photo.

    9. I finally posted the scrubs top pattern for Lusion today!

In this final version, the neckline is bigger and the fit more relaxed than the earlier version. The 10th try on the set-in sleeve is not perfect but I think it's the best I can do. My final try at that seam is below. You can see a tuck in the seam, which is a no-no for set-in sleeves. At least I was down to 1 or 2 tucks per sleeve! Wish they had been on the back side!
The one nice thing about the sleeve is it's compatible with the jewel-neck top pattern I posted previously. So it makes that top more versatile. Oy, I'm glad this project is done!
      Have a good, safe week!

    12. I am halfway done paying off for my mystery Dell :dance did a couple above the minimum payments so I am ahead of schedule. Though since mailing is still a hot mess and I am not sure if paying him off early will help get him home that much faster. I just had a box in limbo for 20 days and it wasn't even in customs! For no specified reason it took twenty days to go from California to Arizona. :?

    13. @zekarmisama Fingers crossed for you that it all works out!

Here's a store-bought outfit for Lusion from "Hello Bello", size 0-3 months.
Walmart was selling these outfits for $6.50 in-store. There were 4 color/design choices.
I removed the waist elastic, shortened it to 11 inches and re-attached it. I cut off the shirt's snap crotch and cut up the center back for ease of dressing Lusion. I might leave the shirt's hem edge raw to prevent bulk. I'm also seeing raw edges on people clothes these days.
I hope everyone's 4th of July went well!

    14. It's a sweet little outfit - the bunny is SO cute!

I am too, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it - it always looks unfinished, to me.

The same as all those dresses with fraying hems and unfinished edges to the ruffles hat were popular on BJD outfits a few years back. I never bought any of them because I just knew I'd set them aside so I could neaten the hems before putting them on a doll, then never get around to doing it.

      Teddy

    15. @Teddy I'm with you! I want finished edges!

    16. Hmm, ok. There's a few options but maybe the best would be self-binding around the hem to match the neck.
These new knits don't ravel or run, which is a whole new world for me. It'll take some getting used to!

    17. Yesterday I posted a pattern for fabric slippers for Lusion.
It took only 4 versions to get it right!

    19. Calling all Lusion lovers out there: What age do you feel Lusion represents?
I find her age very tough to pin down. Maybe it's fluid, depending on her individual face-up and costuming.
      Any thoughts on this?

    20. Definately fluid depending on face-up and styling.

My girl is about four or five. I just wish the body shape better represented that - it's far to shapely in the chest-waist-hip proportions for a child.

      Teddy

    21. I agree with Teddy!

    22. DM says they are suposed to be about 8:nowords:... but... yeah I think Teddy has the right of it. 'MY' girl does fall into the 7-8 range. Also if you look at many of the Lusions and especially the Trinities as being from early 19th century where girls seemed to 'grow up' faster. it's a bit easier to wrap your head around?

    23. Not for me - My girl is 19th century, but she's too slim in the waist for stuff to look right if it's fitted to the waist - I either dress her in higher waisted stuff, make her things that are looser aroudn the waist, or pad out her waist to give ther the right silhouette under her clothes

Although, the ultra tiny waist does help a little in that, if she wears ALL the right layers for the period, her waist isn't bulked out to an exagerated extent by the thickness of the fabrics. With my smaller dolls, I often have to skip underlayers and "cheat" with their period garments becuase otherwise the bulk of the fabrics makes them look too cunky 'round the middle

      Teddy

    24. oh I get the tiny waist and bulk and you literally just explained the 'main' reason for Barbies extra tiny waist... cuz even cheating on that scale doesn't work lol. Note somewhere along the way her creator did explain that lol I have to wonder if this is part of the reason for the proportions of the DM dolls.

    25. I finished paying off my Dell. :dance

Dollmore said he will take 3 months to make.

    26. Yay!

      Teddy

    27. [IMG]
My girl came in, and her face is done!
(a local faceup artist did her work, though her hands need redone since the fingertips are already wearing off)

      • x 2
    28. Oooh. Looking cute!

    29. SO CUTE! I love that little bench!

    30. The Pikachu onesie is a nice touch

      Teddy

    31. @vampireketsuki Very cute! The white hair goes so well with the faceup! The hand blushing is also very nice!

    32. The white wig was one of two that I got when I bought her and since the wig was curly I decided to braid it

    33. I ordered actual Halloween costumes for my girls this year off Amazon. A dragon and a unicorn onesie. I’m not sure who will be getting what but I think they’ll be arguing over who gets to wear the dragon. :whee:
I also ordered a toddler-sized cloak but that will be for the Trinities. I think it’ll be too long for a Lusion.

    34. The weight difference between my new boy and my 70cm boys is more intense holding him than thinking about it.

My friend joked I should start a new exercise regiment called outFIT where I exercise by dressing him up every day. Though he's going to need more outfits if I do that without getting bored lol. He definitely needs a sailor suit. Maybe a tailcoat. The place with the soutache I wanted sells it in 25 yard rolls and I only need about 11 yards for my doll who is going to be a hussar so maybe a hussar or drummer boy military themed outfit.

First order of business is wig cap for making a mohair wig and darkening his freckles because I think Dollmore went too light on it. Though now I am wondering if it looks too artificial.... might paint fleck it up a little more.
      [IMG]20201210_152642 by Kaxen6, on Flickr

Still not sure what color hair I want to give him, but I guess since light peachy pink can be covered up to the medium-dark auburn color that is my other idea maybe I will dye for peachy pink mohair and if I decide I want to stick with a darker tone I can just hit it up with brown.

    35. They're a great improvement on the barely-there Dollmore ones.

I'm looking forward to seeing what outfits you make him. Sailor suit is a must, of course. Have you been looking through Victorian/Edwardian fashion plates for boy's clothing inspiration? Another of my own personal favourites for boys is the Norfolk Suit.

      Teddy

    36. Yeah, I am going with a Victorian/Edwardian theme for him.

Ooh Norfolk suit is nice too. I think I have some fabric in a brownish tan color that would look good for that. I really need to use up my stash...

    37. @zekarmisama Darkening the freckles sounds like an opportunity to improve the original freckles. I like natural-looking freckles and the originals look too uniform in color and size. Even so, your boy is VERY charming and mesmerizing!

Does anyone have both male and female Lusions? I'd love to learn about any size differences.

    38. Not me, but I'd like to swap out my girl's body for the more child-proportioned boy body (with "boy bits" modded off)

      Teddy

    39. Yeah I ended up giving it one more dusting of smaller freckles to be more natural. Need to wipe a little from the wings of the nose and a dot that got on the lip.

Also started work on the wig. Ended up at a color that makes me think about salmon.

    40. @zekarmisama Wow! BIG improvement on the freckles!
People get freckles on their lips, so it's your call on whether you remove it or not.
GORGEOUS face and faceup! Great job on the freckles!

    41. Finished assembling his wig, added a little bit of iridescent paint to the eyebrows because I like doing that for coordinating the face-up to lighter hair colors. I think I am finally done editing Dollmore's face-up.

A little undecided on if I want to trim it shorter or just trim it so it's even.

      • x 6
    42. @zekarmisama Oh, good! I'm glad you lightened the eyebrows! Now the wig is looking a lot more compatible with the eyebrows. As for a haircut, I have no idea. One look at my Covid self-haircut and you'll believe me on that! :XD:

      • x 1
    43. This is what I was going to say too.

Trim the hair even all the way around and see what you think. If you don't like that you can trim it shorter...?

      Teddy

    44. Perhaps don't cut the hair unless you know how to layer. Or it might look very superficial and blunted. Maybe try some styling gel and scrunching it or folding it short and hold in place with bobbie pins or hair clips to see if you like the shorter look.

    45. Decided I like short hair. The back came out a little more choppy than I wanted (I think I maybe should have had more layers of hair back there), but he spends most of his time with his head against the wall so I guess I will root in some of my leftover orange mohair and cut it again when I have the mental stubbornness for it.

Been ordering some toddler shoes for my boy. Zulily had some pretty nice oxfords but then someone at the warehouse had a dyslexic moment and had stuck a size 6 sticker on a size 9 and it didn't fit and zulily ran out of size 6's in the time it took to arrive. But customer service was nice at least.

Ordered brown oxfords and black boots off ebay. Ordered some riding boots off poshmark. And waiting for a pair of button boots to come from China whenever that happens.

It is so nice being able to order toddler shoes because there is like way more variety and not too expensive.

I feel like Bertie would have a shoe hoard if I wanted more modern day styles for him lol

    46. He's looking good!

I went mad with toddler shoe shopping for Daisy Bacon and she ended up with a little wicker hamper overflowing with shoes and boots that work for her Victorian/vintage style.

    48. Dollmore put up half closed eyes and closed eyes Dell sets.

Oh how I wish I could purchase heads separately!

    49. If you already have a doll, Dollmore will sometimes allow you to purchase an extra head. It never hurts to ask.

    50. Those are amazing sculpts and I want the sleepy boy.

And it also makes me wish there was a dreaming version of Alice because I would buy that head in a heartbeat.

      • x 1
    51. Yeah. True doesn't hurt to ask.

    52. Dollmore said they are willing to sell the Dell head separately, but no face-up. $450 like the Lusion head.

      Time to get saving!

Edit: to avoid triple posting on this thread lol

      Shoe observations for Dell.

The American shoe size system is terrible. Poshmark sellers are terrible (2 of 3 failed to ship and the last one shipped late). Aliexpress has a message system that doesn't email me that I have a message and the seller was out of stock and I didn't notice until over a month later >_<

Snug boot legs seems to be problematic.

Auston Brand shoes (black dress shoes) are utterly insane and their size 5 is bigger than other brands' 6 and the largest of the shoes I bought. Size 5 fits, but lots of gapping around the ankle and shoe can be put on without unlacing.

The Children's Place (Brown and Black Boots) skew large. 5 fits, but feels very spacious. Rather wide around the calf.

Shoe Be Doo (brown dress shoes) european size 22 is perfect and snug.

Blackjack Jas black boots size 6 fits well, a little loose around the calf but not as much as The Children's place.

    53. Great Lusion shoe info, @zekarmisama - thank you! Good to know!

My Lusion doll stand came today! I'm very pleased!

Dollmore is having an 8% sale until Feb. 15, so I bought the normally $126 stand. Because of the weight, Dollmore requires $55 FedEx or even costlier EMS shipping. Still, my order came 3 DAYS after I paid the invoice! The bottom plate is 11.5 inches across, solid metal and very heavy. All main parts are black. There are a few small parts to assemble with no instructions but it's not hard to figure it out. Dollmore includes an Allen wrench to tighten the bottom screw. Although the saddle is plastic-coated, I will keep some fabric between the saddle and the doll. (A plastic-coated saddle stand removed body blushing from another bjd of mine.)

Lusion now stands with her weight resting on the saddle (no weight on her feet). I thought she was standing straight until I stood over her and realized she was leaning. She's standing just fine for now, but it would be wise to wire her to make her stand more securely. I'm so glad I got this stand!
      Happy Hobby-ing, everyone!

    54. This is not a very glamorous photoshoot (enjoy my poorly lighted bedroom!) but for fans of 1/2 scale dolls, here are some pictures of my Lusion Dell and Spiritdoll Tangerine next to each other for size reference! As you can see, they may both be "1/2 scale" but the proportions are quite different; I'm not really sure if you could hybrid them successfully, for example.

    55. Wow the difference is even more drastic than I thought from the measurements

    56. Yeah, I was surprised too tbh! The Spiritdoll has more of the proportions of an older child while being smaller overall? But I think Dell is noticeably taller than the girl Lusions, so maybe the difference would be less noticeable with two girls.

      • x 1
    57. The differences are noticeable with the girls also!

    58. Great comparison shots! Very useful! Thanks, you two!

    59. Ended up starting a layaway for the extra Dell head since Dollmore is planning on raising doll prices.

Also turns out it's important to remind them I have a Dell already because they won't sell Dell heads to people who haven't got one already.

Going to be exciting to do a face-up on it since it will be coming blank. At the very least I don't need to worry about clumpy eyelashes and brows nearly as much as my smaller dolls lol

    60. I didn't know they sold the heads separately at all., other than the Dahlia head they have listed under parts
