Dollism Plus US Sep 19-21, 2014, presented by Dollheart, Den of Angels & Mint on Card

May 11, 2013

    1. Ooo ok >.< was just making sure :3
But is there like a pass for regular people to attend the con that they have to buy early? As i was told the con itself was 95$

    2. Yes, registration is here:
      http://www.denofangels.com/dollism/?page_id=2

    3. Ooo thank you Armeleia!!

    4. I have a question about junior registration, if a child is 6 do they need their own badge? (just in case I can't get a babysitter).

    5. I was going to wait to book a hotel room but I got impatient and did it tonight! I was charged $10 for a third person (???), but I'll call the hotel later to straighten that out. We're toying with the idea of upgrading to a King Executive... Three people and three people's worth of dollsuff is bound to take up a lot of space.

    6. I'd love to do that. I plan on going anyway and i think it it would be even more fun with a bjd group.

    7. Second that on the group bus tour to the falls. Fun together.

    8. I'm on standby for an Executive upgrade, too. It will be nice to have more windows and some space for visitors. I was told that you won't be in the room block though.

Definitely on board for a bus tour extravaganza avec BJDs! :D

    9. I am totally interested in a group tour too!

    10. The big windows are part of why I'm tempted! I really like natural sunlight to brighten up a room and it looks much better than fluorescent. Not being in the hotel block doesn't even bother me if it means a bigger room with big windows.

    11. Ok, I just started to check rooms and it looks like there are no rooms available on 18th with Dollism group rate, so we booked for now with corporate rate for company where my husband works, it's only $4 more than the convention rate.

Also a question about registration, is the registration going to be sold out/is the number of attendees limited? I just wonder could we register closer to event dates or is it really better to do now?

Group tour to the Falls sounds interesting! :)

    12. Heck yeah the tour bus sounds great! It leaves both eyes for the rubber necking I know I'm going to do.

    13. You call the hotel to change to the convention rate, at least the date for the convention. Otherwise the hotel staff won't know to put you in the nearby block... it could be an inconvenience if you plan on doing room shopping (room sale)

    14. The Friday/Saturday/Sunday are the only days when we have an actual block reserved, the other days are what are called "shoulder nights" where our attendees can get the room at the group rate, but they're not actually set aside for us.

We're going to monitor the registrations to make sure we don't exceed the occupancy for our rooms, but we don't have a cap at this point. I will check and see when the actual cut-off is, but registration will be open for a few months.

I'll contact the tourism board about the bus tour today since people seem to be interested!

I'm not sure - I am asking Dollheart and Mint about this. They told me that Junior registrations are supposed to be 12-17 year olds, but I'm not sure what that means for children under 12. I updated the registration form to reflect the junior age and I will get back to you about this.

    15. This is so exciting! :D I would really love to help anyway I can. If anyone has questions about Buffalo specifically I'd love to help! ^_^

    16. Ooh~ Too tempted not to ask. Where's the best place to get Buffalo wings? If we're going to be in Buffalo, I'm going to eat some original wings.

Edit: Sorry, I should put something doll related in this post. Thanks everyone for your suggestions about the room and keeping dolls safe! I've finally convinced my GF that we can leave most of them in the room most of the time. Such a relief!

And a tour of the falls sounds amazing! We were going to drive up anyway.

    17. I would love a bus tour of the falls! That sounds so much fun! I plan on showing up about the 16 and staying to the 23 so I have time to see other sights!

    18. The Anchor Bar, which is where buffalo wings were invented apparently, is about 1 mile up the street from the Hyatt! For the best, however I've heard Duffs are the way to go but they are clear on the other side of the city! My husband and I are thinking of offering our floor to a couple of people I'm just waiting for a forum for room shares and such to be set up ^_^

    19. I agree that Duff's is the best - anchor bar is good, but they're more touristy and crowded. Duff's has better wings. In general though, most places in Buffalo have better pizza and wings than most out-of-towners are used to!

And your piece of trivia for the day - Buffalo sauce isn't just hot sauce. It's hot sauce and butter, which gives it it's unique flavor. For real local flavor, use blue cheese dip rather than ranch... And expect an accompanying side of limp, slightly soggy celery. ;)

    20. Do they do wings to go? Or deliver? I could see that getting very interesting. :XD: I don't eat meat, but I might brave the weeks of regret to say that I've tried one.

    21. Maybe we need a "wings booth" on the sales floor. ;)

    22. Noooooo. I don't want sauce anywhere near my dolls or their outfits. lol

    23. I'm up for the tour! I am so excited! I know I've been requested to bring my Chrom, but who else does anyone want to see? I'm thinking a tiny or two but I don't want to be loaded down.

Also, I have to get the money for the badge. How long will they be available?

    24. I also interested in the Falls tour and in the wings.

    25. Lori, might be able to find you Buffalo something-that-isn't-wings-but-still-tastes-good. I have an awesome Buffalo Cauliflower recipe. ;) I'm going to be mobile in my little yellow car, so (assuming I'm not dead on my feet) I might be able to make a run out to pick up an order if people organized it.

I don't think we have a cut-off date for the badges yet, though I will ask Dollheart and Mint.

    26. javasoy, thank you for the advice!

We are also interested in Buffalo wings! Actually the idea of having them on the show floor or somewhere nearby sounds interesting, because they are probably best when they are fresh, if I could say 'just from the fire' ;) Also maybe not entirely on topic but we have been at Volks Dolpa 30 in Tokyo and they had Takoyaki and crepes stands inside on the floor. It's very convenient!

    27. Thanks for asking for us and keeping us posted!

    28. Thank you.

    29. I apologize if this has been answered before, but is there the possibility of a "catastrophe" roll over system with badges?

For instance, my mother has terminal cancer and while she's doing okay now, and might even be doing BETTER by the time Dollism rolls around, there's also the possibility of her doing much, much worse. This makes me reluctant to drop $95 on a badge since things COULD go really wrong and then I wouldn't be able to go (and I'd be out that $95).

I absolutely understand that badges are nontransferable and nonrefundable because the money from the badge sales is going RIGHT into the con (that's my understanding of con badge sales anyway), but in extreme circumstances, perhaps the badge could be rolled over to the next Dollism? I imagine that the person wanting their badge to be rolled over would have to provide some kind of proof of the catastrophe, whatever that may be.

I understand if this isn't something that's feasible, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask!

      Thank you for your time!

    30. This really sounds like an awesome idea. I have no desire to go anywhere in NY and never even held a desire to go there until Dollism popped up. I'd love to be able to buy actual buffalo wings right in the hotel instead of rattling around inside a taxi or otherwise.

Alternatively, is there anything like a Juice Stop near the hotel for us health nuts?

    31. I need that Buffalo Cauliflower recipe!!

Just made my hotel reservation -- the website worked perfectly. And, I would love to do a site-seeing tour. What day would it be?

    32. Thanks Armeleia! For everything and not just this. Everything you've done so far has been awesome <3.

    33. The advice about telling the hotel desk you don't want the room disturbed at all is a great one (plus, leaving out the Do Not Disturb sign, just in case). Although I agree that most likely there should be no problem with dolls in the room.

Thanks for pointing me to the list of Vendors. I hadn't seen that before.

      http://www.denofangels.com/dollism/?page_id=7

Not a LOT of people signed up so far... but Ringdoll coming, very cool. And Val Zeitler! Yay. I'm sure many more will hop on.

      ===

Buffalo Wings! I hadn't thought of that, but great idea. I'd love to try some really authentic wings while I'm there!

And group tour to the Falls would be fantastic, too.

      ===

It will fun to meet with so many other DoA folks!!! ... There should be a space on the membership badge for DoA names, otherwise it might be hard to figure out who is who!!! :D

    34. It's there too, April :D! When you register it asks you for an optional DOA name to add to your badge. It's a super cool idea.

    35. I just paid for my registration, yay! :) I'm both glad the event is so far away (so I can save up money :sweat) and impatient for it to be time already! XD

I'd be interested in finding out more about a Falls bus tour, though I've also been looking into taking a bicycle winery tour of Niagara-on-the-Lake & the surrounding vineyards over on the Canada side. I just have to convince my friends to want to do it, too! :XD:

Also, I'm still holding out hope Volks will want to come to the event, like they did with IDEX last year! Besides the fact that I love the lengths they go to at events, and the goodies they bring, I wouldn't mind taking one of my boys to see the dollie doctor if I had a chance!

    36. I have heard Niagara on the Lake is a great place to visit while up at the Falls. Can't forget my passport to get in to Canada. I look forward to seeing you at Dollism too thesaraghina .

    37. Ah, thank you, theresa 226! I'll look forward to meeting you, as well! :) The tours (through Zoom Leisure) I've been looking up in NOTL all have really great reviews, and the customer photos look wonderful. I've been to Niagara Falls once, way back when I was in college, but didn't cross into Canada at the time. It's a good thing I've renewed my passport since then! XD

And since I seem to be in the reservation-booking mood, I also went ahead and scheduled my flight! :sweat I couldn't believe that prices had already gone up in the two days since I last looked at prices, though. *_* Only by $5 for me, flying out of Miami, but by $15 for my friends who will be flying out of Orlando! With that cost out of the way though, that leaves more dollie-money saving, at least!

I can't wait to go! :fangirl:

    38. That sounds amazing!!! :D

That bicycle tour sounds like fun! My husband and I would love to do something like that. I don't know if our other travel companions would though.

    39. Booked my hotel room and got registration! I'm pretty excited for this! I just need to book my flight but I'm seeing if WestJet will be having any sales anytime before booking.
After that I just need to decide which doll to take with me. :)

    40. We went and booked our flight today, actually were able to upgrade to business class, and getting rooms now, WOOT.

    41. Heh. I should register, I guess! Thanks for telling me about that. I'm glad they're doing that, since I've found that other bjd cons don't have that feature and we end up having to add it in ourselves or just guess who everyone is!!! (BJDC Austin, for instance, but not everyone is on DoA or Resin Cafe... but still, it would be nice to have user-names, since most of us know those more than real names!)

elf-ears was telling me about the great winery tours and Canadian ice-wine or something like that. Who knew? But it sounds fun! --so we might be up for something like that, too. Will have to coordinate the non-con days that we'll be there for sight-seeing, though... before or after...

I am getting excited about this, though. It will be fun to make it more of a vacation than just going to a con... Although that will be amazing. And I only hope I can get to chat with people, since that can be difficult at a busy con. So many names here are familiar... it will be pretty crazy to actually be able to put some faces to them! :D

I really hope Volks will be present, too. I get to see them since I'm in So. Cal, but it's still nice to see what they would bring to a show. :)

    42. For anyone in the southern area of the US, what are flight tickets price range looking for you? Anyone have any tips or tricks to get the best deal? :)

    43. I just registered :D and booked the room yay!

    44. nice! That's pretty awesome

    45. I just registered! Now my friend is getting the flight, hopefully soon, and we're set! I just wish we were leaving Monday...but that's ok.

    46. I checked a couple places yesterday, maybe $250 range plus taxes but I've got to do more research. I've got to confirm the schedule with my sister and her husband but hopefully we'll be booking everything in the next week or two! I think we're going to try to fly in Wednesday early, do touristy stuff Wed, Thur, and most of Friday, then I'll do the 'Con while they do winery tours and other sorts of things.

    47. I might have missed it but, is there a time schedule for the convention? From what time will it begin/end on Saturday and Sunday?

    48. no not yet

    49. I booked a room. I wasn't able to book on Thursday or Tuesday, however. There were no rooms available according to the website.
      But I am very excited.

But booking the flight....now that is the scary part (so expensive!).

    50. Booked a room and registered! :aheartbea
Maybe a couple of friends will come with me, I am really hoping they will make it!
So excited, and the year has barely started. x3

    51. Hey guys, I have a SUPER noob question, I'm really confused about the Hong Kong vs NY thing, I though Dollism Plus was hoste din Hong King? Is this a US version? Either way super excited.

    52. This is in Buffalo NY. So we get one ourselves!

    53. Usually it is, we are very very lucky (and thanks to DoA!) that they've agreed to bring it to the USA this year!

    54. Dont laugh...
Ive never been to a convention...
But what if you want to share a room? But, I'm a guy too so not sure it's as easy??
Also, i'll be driving up since its only 4 hours away and would be happy to pick someone up.
Please note...I drive a FF SES so...it's a small car. Unless yer short you could sit in the "back seat".
This is going to be cool! Sooooo happy its only 4 hours away!!!

    55. EDIT

I'm hoping the times for the events is posted soon, specifically for Sunday, I'm not sure if I need to book for an extra night.
Hopefully we'll know far in advance.

    56. Try checking directly with the hotel, just in case.

This is Dollism Plus US! The one in Hong Kong is separate-- started there and now is also being held for the first time in the US.

Just say up-front that you are a guy and need a room and say if you are willing to share with girls. There should be girls who are cool with that. And you might find another guy who needs a room-mate, but yeah, that would be less likely. I've shared a lot of con hotel rooms with both boys and girls... so it does happen! (and all that was many, many years ago)

Yeah... you won't really know until they post the schedule on the website. But maybe someone here could report on the planned opening and ending times, so people will know when they have to be there and when they can leave...???

    57. Room mate search thread is here http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?608708-Dollism-Plus-Hotel-Roommate-Thread

    58. Agreed. Not sure if I should brave pleading to my sensei (my japanese class runs m, w, f so getting three days off, ughhh! Especially with her allowing us one absent day, after that it impacts our grade...) Just an ending time would be awesome, since I would like to buy the plane tickets soon. :)

    59. Ask about extra credit options? Or offer to write a paper on how the bjd hobby is relevant to Asian culture?
