Dollism Plus US Sep 19-21, 2014, presented by Dollheart, Den of Angels & Mint on Card

May 11, 2013

      Mod Notes:

Just a quick note to address some of your concerns. We will open a official roommate/carpool thread about 7-8 months before the event. Those of you who want to start planning right now are welcome to post short posts such as "PM me if you're from X area and want to carpool", so that the conversation moves to PMs and doesn't flood the thread. This is a very exciting event, so it's understandable that we are all very eager to make plans!

    2. Thank you. Super excited about this event! Even if it is so far out. :)

    3. I really want to attend this, East Aurora NY use to be my home town and I have many friends up there who would be more then willing to let me spend a few night so I could attend. I am so excited!!!!!

    4. Looking forward to this and hope to attend :-)

    5. Oh this is just perfect. I'll gladly drive the up to Niagra Falls for this event.

    6. I'm planning on it!

    7. oooh! Since they have let us know so far in advanced I can save up to spend lots of money! :)

    8. Niagra Falls would not be a place I'd go. Any other major us city would be ok. Airline rates to non-major cities are considerably higher, and often mean no direct flights :(

    9. Niagara Falls is about a 15-20 minute drive from Buffalo, NY. Buffalo has a major airport and there are also a number of cheap hotels in the area that are still rather nice. :)

    10. This is super exciting :) I've alrady got some money put aside and i'm going to start saving for this now! I'm also close enough that I can drive instead of fly. Yay for living in Detroit right next to Canada :)

    11. Sounds awesome! I have been waiting for a big BJD exclusive convention in the US. The timing is iffy, as I am planning to go to Loncon in London in August 2014, but I definitely want to come!

Southwest flies to Buffalo! Southwest's two 50lb bags fly free policy is a huge help to anyone with a lot of dolls.

    12. for any Canadian's we can fly down east (as in closer to the border if not on Canada's side of Niagara). and drive overland, less border crossing hassle maybe?... a few from near me are already thinking of this I hope :P... it would be my first real doll convention. I have only be to an anime type and a doll and toy type before. I can't even imagine what it would be like ^^. I also have not been able to travel out of the city and actually the province for around 15 years O_O... oh how I want to go >< I might even give up getting new dolls until then lol.... okay maybe all the ones id end up with (gotta have my girl and a new body for my goodreau head ;P).

    13. Thanks for starting the discussion thread, Lady Tiku :)

I plan to be there ^____^
      Super excited!

    14. Thanks for starting the thread Lady Tiku!
I was used to putting it in the News Discussion thread and then
realized it's not there anymore! LOL! Safe to say I didn't see where
      to relocate it.

Anyways, I usually miss out because a lot of US ABJD
events are held in either New York or California(or somewhere other than Chicago), but I told myself that
I can't miss this one!! I live in the midwest but I'm not surprised that
it was held in New York. Especially since that's where DOA's headquarters
are right? Did anyone take the survey yet? I also wonder how many international
attendees will come? Like those from Europe or South America?

I'm so excited I want to burst! Ok maybe that's overdoing it a bit, lol.

    15. I really wish that I could go to this, but if it is in 2014 I might be able to save up for the expenses (if I start saving right now T_T'). Being in Australia it's rather problematic when everything is held overseas, but it does sound like a great thing to attend ^^. Here's to hoping I can go :).

    16. I think this is something I would love to attend. And luckily, I'll probably have enough vacation time by then to plan a nice trip. Now all I have to do is save some money and convince my husband. Hmmm...

    17. I am really hoping to attend. I will definitely keep an eye out for this as more information is handed down: like exactly where and how much.

    18. I plan to go! I've always dreamed of going to one of these big events! It will be helpful once there is an official date so that I can one, get time off, and two, start planning as early as possible (hotel, travel) and three, start saving up! I'm really excited!! I may also consider putting off on buying a few dolls until after this event >_>0. I'm sure a chunk of my bjd divas will probably want to come to this event too so we can save on hotel costs and such!

    19. Okay, I was planning for a trip to Niagara Falls for this summer but I will be pushing it back until next September so I can also attend this con. I am very excited!

    20. second that.

    21. I so want to go. It's a long way for me (I live in Utah). Fortunately, this early heads up gives us all a good amount of time to save and plan.

    22. I would definitely push to make it out to Niagra as I'm 2 hours away in Rochester! Plus, there's a gorgeous aviary (Bird Kingdom), botanical garden and butterfly conservatory out there. I'll be taking a trip to Niagra Falls this September so I can do a good amount of scouting for other excursions my family and I can go on, also!

    23. September is good timing for me! I hope the dates will be decided soon so I can nail down some time off of work. I've never had any reason to visit the Falls but I would love to see them! I always have to go to Las Vegas for trade shows and it's dismal, so I greatly appreciate that it's not happening in the usual convention center of the USA.

    24. i think the drive for me would be possibly 6 to 8 hours but it would totally be worth every second. is there any news on what days in September it might be taking place on? I hope I can take off work for this! <3

    25. I would so love to be able to go. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, my husband and I should be able to save up enough to fly over in time. I really hope we can do it!

    26. Heh. I was thinking it was a ways to go from California, but that's nothing compared to Australia!

I've never been to Niagara Falls... or to upstate NY. Seems like a good time to try and arrange a trip! :D

It's a month after the BJDC in Austin, which I was thinking of going to... maybe I can swing both? It definitely sounds like this'll be great. I hope the facilities are big enough for us all!!!

    27. Oh man, Niagara Falls is actually fairly easy to get to from Canada. I've have a travel fund set aside. I am so there.

    28. i would love to go to this! its far out enough that i should have vacation time.

    29. I think it depends on what weekend - Labor Day is September 1st that day so driving anywhere will be a nightmare. I'm hoping it's later in the month.

    30. I would love to go! I really hope it gets placed on a Friday-Sunday schedule so I don't have to ask off too many days from work.

    31. Sounds great! I'm very interested in attending with this amount of lead time hopefully several vendors can be lined up, plus it gives the attendees an opportunity to plan accordingly.

    32. Oh wow really? That sounds so nice and peaceful! I'm very grateful to you guys thinking about everyone as far as location goes. Especially those in Canada. For the international travelers I'll say not to worry too much, America is a very tourist friendly country. I hope as many of you can make it as you can.

@St.James: Really? That sucks, though I do have an aunt in vegas ><

I'm a little shy to say this, but I'm a little excited too about meeting some of our wonderful mods. >//<
Ok, now that I got that out I feel better. Lol!

    33. I'd love to go but it is just too far for me. Lets hope this does well this year and perhaps it will migrate locations in future years. :)
I am happy we are finally seeing a big event like this in the USA though! I get jealous of all the ones in Asia that I could never ever make it to. In the country at least gives me hope!

EDIT: Hmm.. its less than an 8 hour drive... maybe...?

    34. I am dying, I was lucky enough to go to the PNW BJD con here in the Northwest yesterday (amaaaazing day!) and that's where I heard the news of this, LOLOL! So hoping that it's the latter half of September, as that would be amazing for me, but I fear it would be more Labor Day weekend, which is less amazing for me, eep! :sweat A three-day weekend is cool for a con, but the extra people travelling is also a huge hassle. I doubt we'll get to choose the date. :)

If yesterday is any indication, I will need to balance the dolls I would bring to show with the stuff I would inevitably buy that has to go back with me! :o I vote the conference be held near a UPS or FedEx location! ;) Oh my goodness, can you imagine the con exclusives?! :o

      .hlp

    35. it'll be a hike, not so much as everyone here... but with this far in advanced notice, I'm definitely going to plan for it!

    36. I don't know what weekend it's going to be yet - but I don't think it's going to be Labor Day weekend. That would be a crappy weekend for travel and I think it would make it a lot more expensive for everyone (hotels are more expensive, gas and flights are more expensive). After we close the survey next week, we're hoping to move fast on venues and dates so we can focus on vendors and events. We've got a year to plan everything, but there's so much to do with it being organized internationally!

    37. Will there be an official hotel....and rooms held for the group in the name of the convention ?

    38. Shame it is so, so, so, so faaaaaar away :<
      I wish to be there ;_;

    39. YAY!!! :D I want to go too, and I'm SOOOO happy for this heads up! Time to save up! Plus, this will be during my last semester at the university, and I'll be taking fewer credits that semester, so I can get my homework done ahead of time much easier! :D

    40. well dang, now i should get my passport. i live near niagara falls, canada side. lol.

    41. That would be awesome for out of towners and international travellers. I'm planning to go, but coming from the UK I'm going to need somewhere to base myself and get my bearings! I imagine something like that will only be able to be sorted after the survey results come in and there's more of an idea of numbers.

    42. I would like to clarify something, if I could. People are talking as though it is next September. But if it is September 2014, that would be a year and a half(ish) from now. Have I read something wrong or do I really have 16 months to plan for this?

    43. I'M GOING. Well, that was easy. ;) I'm also hoping for an over-weekend event, of course, for time off of work, but I'm assuming that would likely be the plan anyway? I do think that events often seem to run Friday-Sunday, but IMHO a Saturday-Monday event would be fine for me, too? I'm also really glad about the early heads-up for saving and planning purposes! :D

    44. It's definitely September 2014, not this September coming. :) Plenty of time to plan and save.

      Any Europeans planning to go?

    45. It's a straight shot on I-90 from Chicago, easily under a 10 hour drive. I do the drive from Chicago to Erie PA a couple times a year! In September the grapes should be happening, lots of vineyards and Welchs is up there too, smells divine if you head out onto route 5.

US folks should get their passports because the best view of the falls is on the Canadian side.

Very excited about this, can't wait for more details. Please don't be labor day weekend, the roads will be a nightmare!

Glad for the long heads up so we can save and plan!

    46. Why can't this be, oh, in Denver? Everything always seems to be on the coasts. Denver has lots of attractions to offer, and I'm not just talking about mountains!

Gherkin: Dragon*Con is on Labor Day weekend as well. I would HATE to have to choose if they scheduled it for that weekend!

    47. Ten hour drive? BLUH. I guess I can't go. Too bad Chicago gets no love.

    48. I'm very excited that this is in NY! It seems the West Coast always gets all the cool conventions. I've been to Niagara Falls and it is a very lovely area with lots of things to do. There is even a Hard Rock Cafe! I went to a lovely butterfly conservatory there also. Not to mention Fort Niagara and the amazing scenery. I'm glad that this isn't in a huge city, because hotels, parking and food are so expensive!

    49. I will do my best to attend! It would be wonderful to see all the virtual friends in RL. :)

    50. Oh, good point! I shall be certain to bring my passport then. I want to build in a few extra days for sightseeing and no doubt more socializing.

The drive from Chicago sounds lovely! Not going to drive from San Francisco, though!

The conventions we used to have here in SF were great because one did get to meet so many other DoA members. I think that's my favorite thing about cons!

    51. I second this; I live in the west and I've never been to New York and as adventurous as I am, this trip seems a bit intimidating for me :sweat I'm super excited though!

    52. I live right beside NY in Canada, so this is perfect! I never get to go to anything good as it's usually so far away and I feel like crying with joy that I will be able to go! I just need to get my passport and then I am ready! WHOO. AND I have a whole year to save! Thank you guys so much for this amazing oppurtunity.

    53. Well, I traveled to Dollectable a few years back, California from Florida. And last year I did New York Comic Con. It actually wasn't bad, the flight from here to there. Had everything paid for before I went last time and I only ended up with a few months to plan... and now I have over a year? Oh, I will definitely be in attendance to this! I spent so much money at Dollectable when I went and IDEX this year when I went... I am going to need this year to save, haha!

I am extremely excited! This will be awesome!! <3 <3

    54. Yeah Chicago is the third largest city in the US so that kinda surprises me too. We also have a
HUGE convention center, but in reality I don't think there are enough doll owners in Chicago
to vouch for us. MUCH more in NY and California :) I don't mind as much though since it seems
we're not the only ones that miss out. (Plus Chi-town is NOT cheap @.@)

Wow I didn't know that one! 10 hours isn't SO bad...I still may have to take a plane
      though. ><

    55. I would love, love, LOVE to attend but sadly, New York is just too far from Iowa for me to travel. Especially since I will probably be planning a wedding for around that time next year. *sigh*

Those of you that are going, please post LOTS of pictures! :)

      -La

    56. With so much advanced notice, this is totally something I could attend. It sounds exciting! I haven't been to Niagara since I was a freshman in college, and while IDEX was a fun, mixed-doll convention, I'd like to visit one that's all BJDs. I'd probably want to take a week off, and rent a car to be able to do some sightseeing while there. If I didn't spend all my money at the actual event, that is. :sweat

    57. I love the idea of this thank goodness there is so much time to plan and figure out how things will be working it all out. Grad students aren't suppose to get vacations but I might just have to get sick with a really bad flu somehow ;) Now to convince my other dolly people to come too and share a room!

    58. I am really happy with the location! I want to be there for some extra time to play tourist and maybe visit Toronto while I'm nearby. I do have a lot of family in Detroit too.

I hope more of our European members decide to make the journey, it's just a little further away for us coming from the west coast... the conversion from Euro to Dollar sure is advantageous. ^___< I do feel for members in Asia and Austrailia, now that's a long way to go!

I'm already thinking about which dolls to bring. heh.

    59. I hope this isn't a dumb question, but does Volks ever come to Dollism?

    60. Amtrak Lake Shore Limited runs from Chicago to Buffalo. With AAA discount it runs $124 for a round trip ticket. Leaves at 9:30 at night gets in at 9am the next morning. Two bags free and no TSA. We could get a Chicago contingent together and go as a group. (safety in numbers and all that). Just a thought. I've always wanted to take the train. I have no problem sleeping on planes so this would be like a red eye flight, right? It would take me three tanks of gas to get there and back and with the tolls in Ohio and Indiana I think the train is actually cheaper than flying. Go figure!

As for a BJD convention in Chicago, we have a sooo many BJD folks here but it's expensive. I know several people who have looked into it and you have to go way out into the suburbs for affordable space and hotels and then you're off the train lines and a long taxi ride away from the airport.

I attended a wedding early last October and the colors in upstate NY were amazing!
