    1. guess I didn't get the memo ;-)

    2. Brennil, thanks. Just what I need.

    3. Photocontest question:
I know the photo isn't supposed to be matted, but is it ok if it has a white border? Or should it go to the edges of the paper (which would require cropping the photo, in my case)?

      thanks!:)

    4. divi - Unfortunately, the hotel will only do a basic set-up for us, but you are welcome to bring some small -- card table sized -- additional tables. We'll just have to make sure that aisles both in front of and behind the booths are clear.

chinamoon - I'm sorry that the silly poll didn't work right, but I appreciate your comments. I think that one of the reasons the board decided to go with Steampunk was just for those reasons -- it's a timely subject that probably wouldn't be as interesting next year. I think that there is a huge range of possibilities with the theme though and if you use separates, you can combine them with other outfits later on.

Edit - Finally figured out how to close the poll.^_^

liddle66 - A white border is just fine.:)

    5. w00t! I can't say how stoked I am that we get both SDink AND LynR in one place. What a coup. <3 I just dumped a whole lotta input on your thread there. Enjoy.

    6. SDink and LynR at the same time?!! How come I did not know of this earlier. Just got my room booked. (My sister is coming for the sightseeing part. Yes, she is abandoning me at the convention site )

Still need to reserve the airline ticket and the registration. :clover

    7. I'm pretty new to the hobby myself! (long time admirer, just got my first doll.) I live in Colma but hardly know my way around S.F. So I have a question. How do I get there with public transportation? I'd bart to where, then get on what bus, and so on and so forth... (anyone looking or a traveling buddy? XD)

    8. I went to buy the fabric for the constume contest... but they didn't have the fabric anymore... I just saw it there a week ago too... well now i'll just ahve to make the fabric haha >.< I hope the work works out for itself alright! Here's to hoping

    9. Hi! I think that the easiest and most fun way to get to the hotel would be to take BART from Colma -- or the airport for those who are flying in -- to Embarcadero station, go upstairs and catch the California cable car to the end of the line at Van Ness and then walk half a block to the south to the hotel entrance. Unfortunately, that would cost $9-$10 though, so a slightly cheaper option at $6-$7.50 would be to take BART to Embarcadero, go upstairs and walk a block and a half north on Front St., catch the 1 California bus, take that to Van Ness and then walk a block and a half south to to the hotel. It's more walking, not as scenic and the California bus is always crowded, so I would recommend the more expensive option.

Glad that you can make it, anavel and good luck with the fabric, samcarter!:)

    10. Wow, I heard of this last year too late to go! But apparently this is the place to get all the cool info about it, yay DoA! This year, I really hope to make it!

If I can swing it, I shall be traveling down from Oregon. (Given that, it would be great to be able to split some cost as far as rooming goes. Anybody still got spots to fill in a room, to make their budget look a little nicer? Feel free to PM or AIM me. I am a non-smoking asexual, I don't get drunk, and I know the value of personal hygiene, thus I make for a nice, quiet roomie! My children are well-behaved too, I promise. Well, except for possibly Xelloss. *gives him a look*)

    11. Question about the costume contest: are we allowed a prop like a chair or table to pose the dolls with? I don't mean a set, just one piece of furniture.

    12. As long as it fits in an 18" x 18" area, you are allowed to have anything in it prop-wise.:)

    13. O rly?

      ;)

      Thanks for the reply. :)

    14. Sorry to for the bother, but I forgot my information while registering and I sent an email with the receipt attached with my information...

Did it get received? I'm not sure who to email because I didn't get a reply. :sweat

    15. If you sent it to my Yahoo email, I got it and forwarded it to Registration. Go ahead and PM it to me here though just to be on the safe side.:)

    16. Alrighty, thanks very much!

    17. I got an update from the hotel and wanted to share some info with those of you who haven't booked yet. Originally, we contracted for 100 rooms on 7/18 and 7/19 for the convention rate, but the hotel has been kind enough to extend those rates to other nights up until now. However, the 18th and 19th are now over 50% booked and adding the other nights, we have fulfilled our contracted requirements, so they can no longer extend the cheaper rates to nights other than the 18th and 19th and when the 100 for them are filled, those will go up as well. You can still get the $149 rate for the 18th and 19th, but have to pay a little more for the other nights and it pays to book sooner rather than later to get lower rates.

I've talked to a number of people recently who said that they still haven't registered yet and we would love to boost the registration, so that we can know what sort of numbers to expect and to plan more fun events, so we're going to have a registration promotion. Everyone who preregisters will get not one, but two door prize entry tickets and, let me tell you, the prizes are going to be pretty fabulous! So, double your chances of winning and prereg now!:)

      Kelly

    18. Well I'm glad I reserved early! I'm staying Sunday night, too.

    19. Oh Kelly, you temptress... [IMG]

I cannot tell a lie: she's right about those door prizes so far. Hoo hoo! Your heart, it would go pitter-pat to see the prize list so far. OK, OK, I'll stop rubbing it in. My lips 'r' sealed. :eusa_sile
So come grab your room early and save a couple bucks, and double your chances for rafflebound joy.

(And while you're seducing your cost-conscious friends to share the hotel room with you, also seduce them to sign up to volunteer-- you can get half or all of your money refunded in exchange for a few hours of service. Click the little links in my big sig, or go here for details!)

    20. So, I reserved a room today, just so I can make sure to be on the safe side that I'll have a room at the con, cause I'm 90% sure to come now, I just have to clear the long weekend with work (travel times, argh). However, when I made the reservation, it did not tell me what the rate was going to end up being for the other days that were not the weekend days. Do you awesome staffers happen to know what the rate is going to be for those other days? (I'd sure like to make sure I know how much to budget for the con or make sure my CC has enough space on it come that time!)

      Thanks!

    21. Unfortunately, I think that the rates can change depending on demand and will go up as you get closer to the con, but I think right now they are around $179, so $30 more than our con rate.

    22. Okay, that helps though, cause I did my reservation at... I think right about the same time you were posting about the change, actually, and the price going up. So if that's about what it's going to be, then I'll plan in that ballpark. Thanks! I hopefully will get meself together even further in advance for the following year. :sweat

    23. We're going to be making a donation to Dollectable this year...

I'm really sorry we can't make it this time, due to our move this week!

we are working on a very special, one of a kind doll just for Dollectable.

Hoping you have a wonderful show everyone! Thanks for all the calls from people I met there last year-- gonna miss you!
      Catrina
      (born in SF)

    24. Boooo! ;;;; Aw, Catrina, I was hoping you'd be able to come and meet that fabulous tan Mano you helped bring into my life. :aheartbea Oh, and meet all the OTHER local dollies you've helped to bring home into this country. *hee* Perhaps next year, then.

In the meantime, we're looking deliciously forward to seeing that special exclusive doll! *w00t*

PS. @eerielunarose, $179 for downtown metro San Francisco is actually quite normal. :sweat Sad, but this is one $pendy city! And it will only increase as the tourist-season ramps up... it's still April, but we've already got a bumper-crop of tourists in town, and the hotels are filling up & getting costly. By July, they should be fairly beastly. So: we're not kidding around when we keep browbeating you into preregistering to get the hotel discount! It's really for your own good. Because we care about how many leftover pennies you have to spend in the dealers' room. ^^ We want to see smiles, smiles, smiles.

    25. My airfare is paid, my convention ticket is bought, I get my passport in a few days...I am rollin', I'm so excited for this convention. Time to work on a steampunk outfit and a video!! <3<3

    26. Steampunk costume contest? @w@! I LOVE Steampunk! Now that realllly makes me want to go.. I think I'll sign up after I come back from Fanime. XD

Gah... I want to make my Amalia a Steampunker.. She'd look so cute in it.

    27. I can't tell you how much Dollectable appreciates your donation, Catrina, but we sure are sorry that you can't make it!:(

      Kelly (another SF native^_^)

Glad that you can make it, darkawaii!:)

I'll be at Fanime too, doing a couple of panels, Lar-ki, so please introduce yourself!^_^

    28. Darn >.< Well, here's to hoping next year's Dollectable will be just a tiny bit later in the summer. I had really been looking forward to going, but darn surprise birthday Fanime tickets got in the way. Oh well. Really hope there will be lots of pretty pics of all the events for me to fawn over :D

    29. I'll be going with my mom! Woohoo! She's always wanted to visit San Fransisco..

She forgot her badge information too, so I sent it over PM as well. :sweat

    30. Just wanted to let everyone know that I made my hotel reservations yesterday, and I still got the $149 rate! Perhaps someone cancelled... ? Anyway, I was so happy! I got the rate for Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Sunday! Yay!

    31. WOAH! I should make the reservation pronto!!

    32. Who did you talk to/how did you reserve? I tried to get an extra night( sunday) and they wouldn't give me the rate.

    33. What sort of room did you reserve, and how did you do it, by phone or Web? Thanks!

    34. I'm so glad that rate! I was told a couple of weeks ago, that rate was only available for Friday and Saturday nights and I just heard this week that double rooms for that week are almost completely booked. I'm sorry that we didn't contract for more rooms and nights, but since Dollectable would be financially responsible for any unbooked nights, it was scary enough contracting for the 200 room nights that we did.:shudder

    35. Hey there! I was reading through the thread and it was mentioned that the Friday cocktail party was/is limited to a certain number of people. It was also mentioned that there would be an attempt to get a larger room and I was wondering what the status is on that?

I was hoping to attend the cocktail party, but I only was able to register within this week and only just found out about the party limitation through this thread as the website didn't mention that space for the party was limited. :sweat

    36. Brennil and Nytshaed,

I did it through the website that links from the BJDcon Vendors' page. The first time it would only let me reserve Wed. thru Sat, so I completed that reservation, then did a separate one for Sunday night. Got the same rate... and I left a note in the comments section that I'd like to keep the same room.

    37. I just tried it again, and I still can't get a double/double (Two beds) for less than $179.00.

Kelly???? What's up with that? Didn't the block include double doubles?

    38. Double doubles always sell out the fastest. So it's probably that there isn't anymore left on a specific night.

This is mostly my fault because I convinced Kelly to not take on as many rooms this year. Last year, I only contracted about 120 room nights and we barely hit what we needed to keep us from paying for the entire block of unsold rooms. You see, hotels have you contract a certain amount of rooms and if you don't sell something like 80% of them, then the convention is responsible for paying for all of the remaining rooms, including the 20%. We don't get a special rate either. So imagine paying for something like 40-60 rooms at $120 each! That's $8K for nothing!

Since the convention is in it's infancy, we just don't have the money or the guests to contract much more than what we did. In order for us to get more rooms, we would have to contract another 100+ room nights and pay for the ones that didn't sell. This could potentially be a nightmare if we were only able to sell another 20 rooms. That would be nearly $11K that we just don't have in our budget.

This convention is truly run by fans for fans because we don't have some sort of cash flow coming from another venue or something. Any money that doesn't get raised in registration and vendor table sales comes out of our own pockets. I'm still in debt from last year's convention when I had to beg family members and sell my own dolls in order to get the convention off the ground. Any money from this year's convention (if there is any) will go back into the kitty for the next year.

So while I realize that this is a problem, please recognize that we are doing the best that we can with limited means. Hopefully one day we'll have the attendance to be able to contract several more rooms than we need, but right now we have to play it safe.

Plus, keep in mind that it's extremely difficult to predict how many rooms we'll need. All we can do is learn from the previous year and then move forward.

    39. Unfortunately, we're probably not going to know until the end of June if we can increase the size of the party, but the more people who register for the convention and book rooms on Friday and Saturday nights, the more likely it will be that we can have a bigger party.:)

As Liz said, unfortunately the double doubles at the lower rate are sold out, but $179 is still a very good rate for a centrally located SF hotel.

    40. Thanks so much for the information! Could you please let us know once things are more set into stone? :)

    41. I'm having issues with the website today.

      -Anneke

    42. I emailed Programming and it bounced back to me as:

      [email protected]
      Unrouteable address

I wanted to reserve a spot at the flea market please.

    43. It looks like there might be server trouble. Liz takes care of the website and I'm sure that she's working on it.

The email probably bounced, because of the server trouble, but the programming email is the same as mine. However, this year, we are not taking applications for the Swap Meet in advance. You will just need to register for the convention and line up ahead of time for the Swap Meet. It will be in a big room, so there should be plenty of room for everyone.:)

Please feel free to email or PM me if you have any specific questions about the convention rather than posting to this thread.

    44. I just received a notice that I had a month to renew the domains, but they decided that the month was up today. I've renewed them and it'll hopefully be back running in a few hours. My apologies.

    45. Will costume contest rules be posted on the Dollectable website soon? I'd like to know them before I start on this project. I have read this thread and found that competitors can use multiple dolls and have an 18" square to work with, I need to know if dolls HAVE to be on stands and if any other rules apply. It would be frustrating for anyone to be disqualified because of not having clear guidelines for the costume contest. Thanks so much :)

    46. It would just be a good idea to make sure that your dolls are secure and won't fall if a table is bumped or something, so I didn't think that it was necessary to say anything about stands. The convention is not responsible for accidental damage to dolls entered into the contest. However, we're otherwise very easy going and it's very unlikely that any entry will be disqualified.:)

    47. im definatly going to try and save for next year. ;_; its a good thing i didnt make plans and such cause i got laid off from work. >_< so yeah heres hoping for next year!!!

    48. I too have some questions about the costume contest:
Are single dolls judged the same as displays of multiple dolls (within 18 inches square)?
Are doll of different sizes judged in the same division (60cm vs 43cm or even smaller)? Are ther Divisions?
When and where do entries get checked in?
When the contest is over, how will you ensure that people pick up only their own dolls?
      Is there an entry fee?
Is there a limit of entries per person?
If the contest is at your own risk, will there be ropes to keep folks out of reach of the display?
Who will judge the contest and what are their qualifications?
      how will voting be scored?
Will purchased outfits compete against origianl designs?
Are there awards, if so what will the awards be (ribbons, donated prizes)?
When will the costume contest take place and where will the diplay be located?
Is the area able to be secured if the display remains up for viewing over multiple days?
Will someone be watching the exhibit to make sure nothing walks away?

I have a couple more questions but hold off and let you get through these.
      Thanks Bunches!

    49. I see in the photo contest there is "awarding a Judges' Choice, but we will also be opening up voting to the attendees for People's Choice awards.

Don't you think that may be a good idea here in case attendees can't tell purchased outfits from originals? Several of us sell outfits few people have seen and it wouldn't surprise me to see some of these entered in competions around the dollfie world. I see things at meets that are wonderful but wouldn't know the person didn't make it themselves if they didn't tell me. I would feel better if there were at least one group for orginal work and a second for purchased outfits so folks would know what they are viewing.

    50. Here's what the group in Austin has put together as Divisons. I think it's a great example of comparing apples to apples. It doesn't make size differnces but you do know what part of the work the enterent worked so hard on. It also can give you an idea of the number of folks that plan to enter so there are enough tables ready.

Of course "commercial" shoes, wigs etc are OK in every category.

All entries must be on stands, or securely supported by any props you are using.

You may enter as many dolls as you like.

Entries will be accepted on Friday, no advance notice is necessary, but if you are sure you will be entering I would appreciate you letting me know so I have a rough idea of how much space we will need to show everyone to their best advantage.

There will be a small fee of $1 per entry, payable at the time
      __________________________________________________________________________

      just a thought......

    51. Yes, I believe that all dolls are judged at the same level. If an outfit is beautiful, it'll be clearly recognized by no matter what the size of doll or how many dolls are on display.

On Saturday morning there will be 1.5 hours (7am-8:30am) where you can register your doll and set them up in the display hall. You will receive a slip with your entry number and that will be your ticket to retrieve your doll. We will also have you paperwork (that you'll fill-out when you drop-off your entry) that we can check against a photo ID. At the end of the day (hours will be posted later) you'll be able to pick-up your entry. Please enter at your own risk though. We will have security in there to make sure no one touches the dolls, but we are not responsible for dolls that are lost or broken.

No, it's free to all registered attendees.

Kelly will have to answer this question. I think it's one entry per person.

There won't be ropes, but there will be someone watching the displays to make sure no one disrupts anything.

Judges will be announced at a later date. The other prizes for this category are judged by the other attendees.

Each attendee will receive a voting card in their goody bag and will be able to vote for their favorite costume. Whoever receives the most amount of votes will win first place. Whoever has the second highest will win second, and so on.

Yes. In my experience with costume contests like these is that attendees aren't ever fooled by store purchased items as most everyone in attendance knows almost all there is about dolls and people judge accordingly.

We already have some wonderful donations that are going towards this contest.

We want the competition to be fun and simple. There isn't a certain "judging" period where we can describe the rules to everyone, so for simplicities sake, we chose to go this route. It's the same sort of thing that Volks does with their costumes contests, and it seems the most fair route to take.

    52. Thank you for fielding all these questions, Liz! For the questions above -- yes, there will only be one entry per person this time, due to space limitations. Also, we might not start receiving entries quite as early as 7am, but will definitely be announcing the time well in advance.

To respond to your question about the photography contest, chinamoon, this time, we are going to have both attendees' choice, just like the costume contest, and a judges' choice, because we will have a number of extremely talented photography experts at the con, including Lizzegirle.:)

    53. Thanks for all the answers, this helps alot. It sound like you've covered the important stuff already and it just wasn't posted anywhere.

I was thinking more about artist made one-of-kind outfits that people purchase and then fail to give credit. Since they are handmade and not store bought, if someone doesn't say something most people wouldn't know.

I was hoping there would be 2 enteries per person since I can't seem to choose which idea to go with, lol. I hate to choose between my kids too.

      Thanks for all the details!

    54. Sure thing!:)

Since the entries are going to be as anonymous as possible, so as to not bias any of the voting, there will only be numbers in front of the entries, so no need to worry about having to give credit for a costume.

Sorry about that, but only one entry per person.

    55. Thanks Chinamoon and Kellyhime for posting questions and answers. I still would like to know if these rules could be posted officially on the Dollectable website. It would help all competitors to know where to look, especially since some don't use DoA or visit very often. Thanks so much for your help :)

    56. I'm sorry to bring up the question again, but I know of some fellow doll owners that aren't on this board who are thinking of making it to the con and who are asking about the Friday night cocktail event. *_* Wow, that was a mouthful.

I definitely understand what was said earlier and I relayed the information to them already, but I was wondering if this information could be posted to the website as well as this information could potentially alter plans for people who are coming in from out of town and are trying to figure out when to arrive?

Edit: ... And like someone else said, 'for people who don't have access to DoA or who don't know where to look for additional information.'

      :)

    57. Sorry about that, Shulamite & Iikaya! Liz and I are going to be working on getting all this info up on the website by next week.:)

    58. Thanks so much and that's all right! I'm sure you guys have all been really busy what with the con looming up just ahead. *_*

I'll definitely make sure and point (other) people in that direction should I be asked again or point them to DoA if they are DoA members.

The website is great, by the way! Looks clean and beautiful with an elegant feel to it and the navigation is definitely visitor-friendly!

    59. I wanted to let everyone know that our deadline for purchasing vendor booths is May 25th. If you were thinking of selling at Dollectable, you need to purchase your space now. We have a few spaces open and a few Artist Alley spots still available. So please check-out the website at: http://www.bjdcon.com/vendors.html

Also, our vendor hall is almost full, so those of you haven't been saving up yet, might want to start saving right away! I'm scared that I'm not going to have enough money!
