Does That Make Me Crazy!? (BJD Edition)

Oct 8, 2019

    1. On 102.5 WFMF morning radio, there is a show segment during the week called "Does That Make Me Crazy". Listeners call in with their quirky and funny habits or just random things about them, to see if they are smart and practical or just plain silly. I thought it would be fun to make a BJD edition for us! The following response has to be your answer to whether the previous poster is bizarre or not AND share your own "Does That Make Me Crazy".

      I'll start!

I like to frame photos of my BJDs and display them in my office space at work...like my coworkers do with photos of their children. Does that make me crazy?

    2. I don't think you're a bit crazy for having pics of your dolls with you at work. It can be argued that you're not showing familial attachment; you're displaying your personal interests and also (if you do your own faceups) your artistic efforts. Then again...

I take my doll to work with me and she sits on my desk. She has her own chair, ID badge and set of headphones (I work in a call center).

I have a Facebook account (profiles, not pages) for each of my dolls and they post on each other’s walls. Sometimes the threads can get quite long, especially if four or five of them are having a conversation.

    8. Nahhh. Some people are more fashion-inclined for themselves, and some are the same for others. It's more fun to look at nice clothes than it is to wear them, that's for sure.

I went out and bought a thrift store shelf, cut off the legs, sanded and refinished the entire outside, all in my tiny third-floor apartment, purely for the sake of having a sun-safe way to display my dolls. It took about two months. Does that make me crazy?

    18. Nope- It's perfectly normal to have personal projects, stories, and things that you work on slowly, at a relaxed pace. Because after all... it's relaxing or nice to do! It's only natural that overlaps with your lovely dolls too.

    23. Not at all!. It'll save you money on doll clothes in the long run.

I have two large plastic tubs of fabrics and a few boxes of tiny buttons and embellishments that I have not distinct plans for except to make "something" for someone in my doll crew. I also talk to all my boys like they're real people. Does that make me crazy?

    28. No, because if you're going to put all that time and effort into it, you should make it exactly the way you want.

I want BJD versions of all my favorite characters. (So far I have the current Doctor, Bill Potts, two original characters and Crowley and Aziraphale from "Good Omens" as Pukifees and two OCs and Rose Tyler as Minifees.) Does that make me crazy?

    29. Nope! It just means you’re passionate about characters and I’m certain their creators would be flattered!

I’m trying to shell a character form a dnd campaign I’m planning who is 8 feet tall, black-cherry red, has horns, wings, a tail, and ideally a lot of muscle (as a paladin!). I’ve worked out that to be in scale with the other dnd dolls, I’m looking in the 80 cm range. The only catch: she’s female. Am I crazy for trying to make her?

    32. As long as your financial stability is not threatened, not at all! Sometimes those long wanted dolls just turn up suddenly at an impossible-to-refuse price so we just have to make an exception ;)

I refused to buy an armchair that I liked for myself because I felt that it cost too much. Then I went and bought two beautiful doll armchairs that together cost more than double the human-sized one. Does this makes me crazy?

    33. If you have some kind of seating already to use, then probably not. On the other hand, if your living room is pretty barren of places to sit outside sitting on the floor, then...maybe?

I wouldn't mind getting more into gaming (especially Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Switch, that game is just gorgeous! Also, I grew up loving the series), but can't seem to justify the cost of the console or the games. Yet I have no issues getting bjds or related accessories that cost as much, or more, than the console does. Does this make me crazy?

    34. Yes, but only because BotW is awesome if you like the series, and I absolutely recommend it. But no, if it's a choice between a game that you'll be able to get for years into the future versus something that might not be there in a week, obviously availability is a larger priority than cost.

I'm currently in the process of buying a new shelving unit and rearranging furniture to make room for it so as to have a place to display the fashion-size bjds I used to say I was never going to get into. Does that make me crazy?

    35. Not at all, it just means that you're delving into dolls that spark your imagination in a different way than the dolls you collected before. Fashion-sized dolls are pretty cool, and so are the clothes they can wear. :3nodding:

I just put a doll on layaway that has wings and I want to show her off when she gets home. Yet my house is pretty small, so I'm probably going to have to rearrange half the house in order for her to be out so I can see her instead of hidden inside of her box. Does that make me crazy?

    46. I think if you have split finances, that's probably fine? If you have a certain amount of non-mutual "spending money" then accounting for your use of it isn't necessary. That's the arrangement my gf and I plan on having when we get married. I also dodge the prices with her at the moment, but we aren't financially tied at all yet, and she knows I am intentionally obfuscating the dollar values.

Mostly, I think as long as it's your money, then probably fine.

I keep splurging on single artist dolls, even when I have cheaper dolls that already have characters on my Wishlist. Specifically just Twigling girls. I'm saving up for the new body she talks about, and I have like 4 of them planned now, after a few surprises, entirely just because I think they're beautiful. 57. Nope. How else will you know what clothes would look good on them or what other dolls would make good companions for them?

I'm trying make a "fairy garden" part of my rock garden mainly as a photo set for my dolls. Does that make me crazy?

    58. Not at all! While it’s nice to take the dolls outside for a photo field trip, creating a fairy garden will make the photos uniquely your own.

I spent years learning Photoshop in order to create complex composite images that I use for graphic novel featuring my bjd crew. Does that make me crazy?

    59. Not at all! That make you a very dedicated artist!

I never thought I would sell/trade any one off my crew, but we never “click”, I feel really sad about it, but I have to let it go… does that make me crazy?

    60. I've sold/traded probably somewhere between 40-50 times--I think it's good that when a doll doesn't work for you, and you sell it, someone else has the chance to click with it. Sometimes it's even really helpful to that someone because they get a chance at a limited/now-unavailable doll they love, and you get a fresh start. Me not clicking with my first doll got someone a discontinued fullset from 2015 in 2020, and got me the money to grab Shrike, who is probably my favourite doll I've ever owned, who I got because her owner didn't click with her. It's not crazy to want to sell/trade at all.

It's also not crazy to feel sad about it--I mean, you bought the doll for a reason, and somehow, it didn't work for that reason. And it's normal to want to make it work, normal to feel weird that it doesn't, and normal to have trouble reconciling how you're feeling with how you felt when you started. Lots of people anthropomorphize dolls, and there's often a lot of emotional investment in these tiny resin humans, and it's okay if that emotional investment, or lack thereof makes you sad. I felt kinda sad the first few times I boxed up dolls I'd sold. 0 crazy here.

Here I go! I keep collecting art supplies--good ones that friends have recommended--to try to start doing faceups. I've been doing this for years. I have yet to do more than edit a faceup that really didn't work for me. I set up an area in my basement for it and organized everything a week ago for it. Still nada. Does that make me crazy?
