Does size matters for dolls being couples?

but isnt bjd meant to be customized... some dolls are look like a child because of their face-up, clothing, and wig... so isnt is possible even the company made a certain sculpt as a 10 year old the owner can make it 10 year more older with more customization?

i might being too deep into things.. i just doen't like how people fire words to a certain person who have a peculiar taste, while that person can not retort back because every one is pointing it is wrong...

sorry for my contradictory opinions... it is our freedom to like what we want, to say what we want, and be what we are but it is not gonna be a freedom no more if we are already hurting anyone...

 

What you're addressing right now is intention. I said it quite briefly in my previous post, but I'll explain in detail:
If the doll's owner is pairing up an MSD with an SD and intends for both characters to be adults, that doesn't bother me at all. I would find it annoying to photograph and am unlikely to use such a pairing myself, but I wouldn't be bothered by it.

However, if the person paired up an MSD and an SD and INTENDED that the MSD be a child character and the SD an adult character, that would make me feel uncomfortable and I would be unlikely to comment on their photostories or even talk to them in person much if I met them at a meet. It would, as I said, squick me out.

I wouldn't go off on them and call them disgusting or try to make them see things my way, I'd just keep my opinion to myself and try to avoid them.

 

I think that the best coarse of action...

why do people need to say it is disgusting, and give to others dirty looks that seems like they were the dirtiest person on the world...

It's because child molesters are the scum of the earth and in many people's opinions, the most depraved and monstrous of individuals. Pedophilic imagery and thoughts evoke the same emotions in people that child abuse does because they are so closely linked.

Since in the instances that are being discussed, no actual child would be hurt, I wouldn't go off on someone for it, but I WOULD have a low opinion of them and be creeped out by them and avoid them.

 

Personally I think the Faery Legend line has the best porportions to do that(this?) kind of pairing, because they really do look like miniature adults with unearthly qualities like wings. I fell in love with the idea when at a meet someone put my girl on her 70cm guy's shoulder, it just seemed perfect to me.


Oddly enough I think I too already replied to the original thread that this thread was merged to, and I'm pretty sure it all boiled down to scaling and sculpt "maturity" as opposed to any actual size differences. So long as the sculpt looked mature enough, and the scaling looked okay- all is good.

Though now I'm curious... What about anthros? Do the same general "rules" apply?

 

I do make allowances for people who are underage themselves who create underage characters to put in more explicit situations. I mean, it's no myth that teenagers below the age of majority are nevertheless still individuals engaging in "adult" behaviour, and if someone who IS 15 years old creates a pairing of characters who engage in "adult" things while being say, 13-17, well... I just kind of find it understandable. Lordy know I had plenty of underage characters doing very un-underage things when I was that age, because you know, I found teenagers - people my age - more attractive and more relatable than adults at that point in time. So I wouldn't necessarily quickly label someone a pedo just because they like sexy teenagers, because they very well may be one themselves. (though I would prefer it if they did not impart their uh, "fantasies" on me because I happen to be just over 20, and it makes me feel a little gross if the characters/dolls are below age of consent) Now, if they're a much older adult putting teenagers/children in provocative situations because they think it's sexy, and not for purposes of realism (teenagers - dating - that drill), then I start going shifty eyed and will possibly judge them in a not very nice way.

I think you're right, it's probably frequently the case that people don't realize that teenagers are adult heights - and the younger generations are getting taller and taller. I went to visit my old high school the other day, and the grade 8 students were all either the same height or taller than I was! And I'm not all that short - I'm 5'6". People don't realize that a human develops all of their height before the ages or 14-16, which is when the physical development pretty much finishes. They just kind of go "Oh, 15 years old? That's like, a child right? And about 1/6 of an adult's life span? Then they should kind of be like, about 1/2 of adult height, right?"

Just putting this out there, but if we consider a 60 cm doll to be 6 feet tall, then each cm of height difference = 1.2" difference in character height. (I'd probably say they're more like 5'8" though, because that would make the 70 cm dolls 7 feet tall, and I like to think of them as being about 6'7", therefore 1 cm = 1.1") I mean, by all means you keep on trucking and do what you do with your adult characters, but just realize that it might look really bizarre to other viewers, and not in the way you intended (but necessarily in an "eww pedo!" way either, could be just in a "Wait... that actually makes absolutely no sense" way)

 

I have seen some pretty interesting couples that were "different sizes" Candygears Mr. Have comes to mind, and I have seen a zaoll make a lovely pair with a dz 70 cm (My apologies for names slipping my mind, your dolls are gorgeous though!) I myself have toyed with a soom supergem falling for a zaoll or minifee. There is even a 'tinkerbell' kind of thing with my soom aren and soom sard XD

I do share the same opinions as other though, if the couples size difference is meant to portray a young child and an adult. I would keep a wary distance and just avoid posts though, I am not one to judge or make a scene. (and I hope i dont offend anyone) But that is for the negative association to child molesters/child pornography...

Anyways! I do think mixed size couples can work and can be very interesting, as long as both people in the couple are adults/teens >>;

 

When I was younger, I felt bad about my height. I remember my shock at seeing that some of the younger kids in my school were my height or taller than me. All I remember thinking is "Man, I'm really short."

To be on topic, I don't have any odd couples like that - I don't even have a couple; I'm still looking at buying a girlfriend for my BBB Apollo, Stephen, but whatever doll I settle on is going to be close to his height.

I think that the photographer has to consider their viewer when choosing to photograph odd-sized couple in an intimate way. They have to question if people outside of the hobby - who may or may not care to look into what this hobby is about - are going to see these pictures, and if they're going to get what your story is about.

I mentioned this in another thread somewhere - and someone else mentioned it here, too - but while your doll's character really may be an 8,000 vampire who happens to be stuck looking like a kid, to an outside viewer, that just looks like a kid. No matter that this vampire be so much smarter/wiser/more mature than their counterpart - most people, I'm guessing, aren't going to take the time to either research your doll's backstory, or even believe it when you say "This is an 8,000 year old vampire...".

 

If the owner is capable of making it look visually older, sure, whatever. If the owner is not, then, whatever their intentions may be, it will appear as though they're making a pedophilic pair. Note: appear. And then they have to be ready to face any consequences.

Freedom of speech means that you can say what you want, but it doesn't say that people are not allowed to disagree with you, to argue with you, or even to get hostile. It also means you can go ahead and argue right back without fear of being censored. It does not protect you from persecution for your views. That's another law altogether.

This is a discussion thread, feelings of all sorts will be aired. If you don't like them, ignore them, contest them, but it's against the idea of freedom of speech to attempt to get people to self-censor just because you don't like them.

 

Read my statement more clearly. I never said the person I responded to is disgusting or anyone else for that matter, only that dolls can depict pedophilia because they resemble human beings which in itself is disgusting. I never called out any specific person's character. Nor did I say anything about anyone's dolls.

 

But the thread wasn't about whether or not pedophilia was disgusting. I think we all agree that pedophilia is unpleasant. But the thread was originally simply asking if people owned mixed couples, and to share a little about them. The word "disgusting" should never have even been used in the first place. Hell, the word "pedophilia" should never have been used, as that's not what the thread was about. Flinging such words around in a topic that easily sets people off can only result in people being offended.

 

Because it was mentioned several times by several posters and irks me a bit for some reason, not all MSD/SD pairings have the MSD at the SD's waist. Some are actually much closer in height than that.

The top of Moswen's head (he's 46cm) reaches the top of Kijika's shoulder (he's 58cm). Moswen standing next to one of my larger SD's (61/62cm) has the top of his head come about breastbone high, but still well above waist high.

 

On a subject OTHER than MSD-SD... I think it's funny that people tell me my girl-girl 68/58 couple 'looks weird' when I almost never see similar complaints about a m/f couple with a 68/58 dynamic. I wonder if there are any 68 girls out there loving their 58 guys?

I also would love to see a girl 68 with a boy 58. I love short guys. :'D One of the most handsome guys I know is just barely above shoulder height to me, and I'm terribly tall myself (I'm like 5'6).

If you say things on the internet, people are going to give their opinion. Those opinions are not always going to be nice, especially if someone admits they like reading comics where little boys are in sexual relationships with adults and then says they don't want to be judged for it. Pedophilia is an accurate term to describe that. I've seen many photostories where the person doesn't even try to say their child-like MSD is an adult. I'll never forget the time I saw someone post a photostory about a teenage boy who raped his 2 (yes two) year old brother. I found this DoA photostory through her youtube video where her comments on the situation were a delighted "yay rape!" The comments section of that thread were full of how adorable they were together and were a good "couple" and such. That is NOT ok. I'll say it again, the doll hobby is WAY too permissive with everything.

It is the same in humans, I had a friend that was like 155 cm tall and her boyfriend was almost 200cm tall O_o same age... and even now I am finishing college and I went to my junior high and almost all the male students were taller than me. Every country has its way of thinking, so it's the same with different ages. In my opinion if someone wishes to have a couple with a kid and an adult, so be it. I really don't care about what people do with their dolls.

Anyway, I just ordered a 70cm boy - 60cm girl couple... I really don't know if it will work for them...

 

I have seen this done rather well, actually. The couple was a 40cm Narae and a 70cm Hound. Narae is a reasonably realistic and mature-faced sculpt for a 1/4 scale doll. At the beginning of each photostory, the owner would put a disclaimer reminding people that the Narae was intended to be a very short, adult woman and that the Hound was an intentionally tall, supernatural something or other. (Somebody correct me about what the guy was, if you've been around long enough to remember this couple.) For me, the disclaimer was enough to establish context and suspension of disbelief. I can't say it would work for everyone.

I think, if both dolls have a similar level of realism in their sculpts, and the smaller doll is dressed/made up to look the correct age, you can get away with a lot. Some people are really stuck/mentally wired on the Size=Age thing, so you'll probably need to remind them every now and again.

As for the 60cm/28cm cursed child couple - Tinies who are actually ancient or adult characters stuffed into small bodies are fairly common, so I don't think such a couple is that out there. There's a lot of potential for comedy. I haven't read all of it, but the manga "Bride of the Water God" has an adult woman married to a water god who is a child part of the time. But... I would avoid anything heavily romantic or sexual, as I think that would automatically be seen as squicky regardless of the shorter character's mental age.

You're right... but in animation, especially anime, there is often a huge difference in height between teenaged and adult characters, depending on the style of the animation. I'm probably dating myself a bit, but take the anime YuGiOh - the main character and all of his friends are in their mid-teens. Yugi, the protagonist, is very short. All of his friends, who are probably average height, are still noticeably shorter than the characters who are meant to be adults.

If a person watches a lot of cartoons... that sort of teenagers-are-shorter aesthetic can stick into their heads. It's not realistic, but they have seen it enough where it doesn't appear wrong either.

The size matters only slightly. Most people think of couples being boy=taller girl=shorter than boy. So if someone would want it to be seen like the public eye that's what they would go for. I'm all for 'different' BJD couples

 

For someone who tries to be as open-minded and tolerant as possible about everything including dolls, I've always been really picky about the relative scale of my doll couples. I want them to match as closely as possible so it looks like the two dolls "belong" together.

But what other people do is up to them, of course.

 

Generally speaking, I convert all doll heights in cm over to "realistic" heights and then compare them/keep them in "scale" that way. A ~15cm difference, when converted, is noticeable (like, a 5'2" person and a 6'5" person!) but not totally unnatural. Sculpt maturity, as previously mentioned, is more important to me than height overall.

I think that it's depending on the difference of height. If it's too big, for example between a 70cm and a 42cm, it doesn't seem natural at all. But if it is not, i think that it should be ok.

 

It kinda weirds me out if there is a major size difference, but again, it's all down to personal preference really. Most of my dolls will probably be MSDs, partly because the fact is that they will be more believable as couples, well to me anyway, there are other reasons thrown in there too, but yeah.

For me, SD is an adult, and MSD is usually a child. So I avoid ''paring'' those to each other.
What comes to dolls, I feel that couples from the same size range fit to each other the best. But still I'm kinda open-minded, SD-MSD can work sometimes, but not often.
And that's of course only my opinion.

 

It's when it starts looking like a pedophile and a child that it crosses in to the 'it matters' area.

 

I am planning on some couple depictions where the man is described as a giant of 6 foot 4 inches. and the female charactes are typicaly refered to as 'mere slip of a girl'... my characters are regencey(ish) era so also they may be a 16-20 year old girl with 20 to just shy of 40 for some of the men... normal ages for the time (the age gap thing was often large with established men taking 'young wives'). So as long as the molds don't seem 'childish' the height difference could work to ilustrate certain things. It all boils down to 'do they fit together'. At least I think so... the comment about manga character portrayal almost demand large height diffs O_o.

 

If you (general 'You') plan on doing a "mixed-size" couple where the difference between the dolls is enough to put the pair in completely different scale catagories, I think there's really one important question you have to ask yourself...

Would the average viewer (Who, keep in mind, is not likely to know ANYTHING about your specific characters-), look at the two of them and think "That seems inappropriate"?

If the answer is yes, that doesn't necessarily mean you can't do it... You're the only one who can determine what's right for your own collection, after all... But it does mean that a large, diverse public forum like DoA probably isn't the best venue for posting your "happy-couple-times" pictures. Sticking to a private site, your LJ or a smaller community for that kind of thing could prevent a lot of problems, raised eyebrows and misunderstandings.

 

Anne Rice's "Interview With a Vampire" or "The Vampire Lestat"... I think it's the first one but I am not sure... The movies are based on her books.

 

I think it depends on the maturity of the sculpt, it's probably going to look a bit "off" if you pair a realistically mature sculpt with a younger more stylised one (say, an Iplehouse EID with a Fairyland MNF), if they seem the same in maturity, and the only real difference is the size, then I can see when that would become appropriate.

Personally, I prefer to pair my dolls (even if they are only in my head at present) in size categories SD with SD, MSD with MSD, etc. Simply because, to me at least, it's more aesthetically pleasing.

 

I'm not bothered by SD/MSD couples so long as they are portrayed as being in the same age group.

 

I think it's really about how you see the dolls. My Chrom, an SD13, was perfect for a character of mine, who's girlfriend is a Luts Pine (MSD). Not the best resin couple!! Especially since they two are part of a story where the other shelled characters are MSDs as well. Because, however, they were both so perfect for the characters, they both came home. Pine is the 'normal' version of her character, while Chrom is 'big!Lance'. They sit together, but I don't see myself taking full body pictures of the two, even if Chrom "should" be much taller and more filled out, looking older than his years, and Pine being tiny, sheltered and baby faced in comparison. I have pictures of them as couples, which are fine, but if you throw the others in, he just looks a little silly. Chrom'll always be the 'big' version of his character.

 

Further to this thread, I now how 3 pairings that have a very noticeable difference in height. Moswen (46cm) & Kijika (58cm), Haniel (44cm) & Darius (28cm) and Khale (68cm), Fei-Lau (68cm) & Sleet (30cm).

In-story, Moswen is 6'-3" and Kijika is 6'-9". Haniel is most often a 6 year old looking child, but he can change his physical form (he's mostly demon) to look like a 16 year old. One of his lovers is Darius, who is a 313 year old 1/2 demon, 1/2 cockatrice. Khale is 6'-0", Fei-Lau is 6'-1" and Sleet is 2'-10" (although he claims to be 3'-0"). Funny enough, none of these pairings are human and don't look fully human either with horns, wings, tails, fangs, birdy feet, etc. Not saying that has to be the way to excuse the large height difference but there seems more leeway when the dolls/characters are obviously not human.

 

I don't have a mixed size couple, but I think it's fine to post them on DoA. Sure, it may mean constantly noting that the characters are both adults, but I don't see why anybody should be scared of posting their pictures. Unless of course one of the dolls wasn't an adult. Then the owner shouldn't be in any kind of public anyway, they should be behind bars.

 

I've been trying to find a good sculpt as a boyfriend for my msd, who is meant to be a young adult. Even Vitos look strange because, for me, the proportions are too off. Especially knowing MSD's reputation for being children, it becomes more important for me to pair her with a similarly-sized sculpt to avoid this as much as possible. I want a group of adult dolls but just didn't want SD size.

However, I want to point out to all those who are saying that condemning pedophilia (or things glorifying it) is hurting their feelings/ making them uncomfortable, just know that talk about how cute Shotacon is and how graphic imagery isn't really pedophilia because the acts are being portrayed by human looking dolls and not actual humans is making me (and apparently others) VERY uncomfortable. In fact I disagree that it isn't. While it may not be child molestation, it is in the pedo-realm. I really want to see a polite discussion too, but it's hard with so many hot-button posts.

Of course as long as it's not hurting actual children you have the freedom to do whatever with your dolls. Just please don't get upset when we don't all smile about it.

 

I think a lot of people forget that these are dolls, not real people. (Honestly, I find these discussions really 'funny.') To each their own. I mean, should someone hide away their dolls, their views, their likes, and their feelings just because someone may not like it? It's all about feeling good and doing what you want to do with your dolls. And reflections of someones fantasies / creativity through their dolls doesn't mean that they want to 'commit' an act that they are displaying.
People have the option not to look at it or acknowledge it if they don't want to, and you can't get upset when some people don't like what you're doing. And you can't get upset for seeing things done that you don't like.
(I'm not speaking about extremely explicit photographs or stories.)

 

I perfer SD sized dolls with others in that size group. Each couple in their size group, like MSD sized with another MSD sized. Tiny with Tiny...that's just me.

I'm going through this now with a pair of dolls I plan on doing at some point. My character, Sahariel, is 5'8", his boyfriend, Terrance, is 6'4" and lanky. I already have a doll picked out for Sahariel and he's 63cm! Which means, if I want the height to match, I'll have to venture around that 70cm range. But I feel, if I go too much taller for Terrance, they won't look good together. So I'll likely aim for something a little closer to the doll I have picked out for Sahariel, but I'm hoping I can find a doll for Terrance that, at the least, looks visibly like he's a bit taller, even if the heights aren't accurate.

So I think a drastic height difference would look a bit weird, doubly so when you take into account the sculpts and such.

 

Oh trust me, we never forget that it's not real children being portrayed in photostories or manga. If someone were posting pictures of REAL children in these situations, I wouldn't be sitting here going "that's gross and disturbing" I'd be calling the police, the FBI, Oprah(?!), anyone who could rescue that child. Just because something isn't really happening, doesn't mean that publicly trivializing or even glorifying despicable acts for some sick fantasy wont make people go D:

 

Using this as an example, the thing about using a doll in the 60cm range, and 70cm range, is that they're still proportionate with one another. They're both still going to be 1\3 scale. Minis are a completely different scale (1\4), which makes it harder for them to look like two adults rather than an adult and a child (or a fairy, or a toy).

Then take in the actual height difference. Say you go with an actual 60cm doll and a 70cm doll. 10cm seems like a huge difference...but if there's a mini involved, it can be 20 or more. Personally, 63 vs 70 isn't all that drastic IMO, and again, same scale. I have 70cm dolls with the same size head, hands and feet as my 60cm dolls. They don't look wrong or off or out of proportion with each other at all, they just have a nice height variation.

 

This is what I agree with... as long as the dolls appear proportionate "to eachother" it's should be okay. I am 5 feet tall myself, I would not avoid dating a guy just because he was 16 inches taller than me (I know way too many guys in that height range O_o). So why should it not be the same for dolls (fyi I am 45 I will never grow to a more 'suitable' height match ;P ). And if a 70 mold looks like a match to a mini in matuity and proportion, why not... The only exceptions are cases like the 300 year old child/adult vampire (as in the Anne Rice stories), or like in "Bride of the Water God" where the male appears at 2 different ages physically. I plan on a 'sibling' couple (not romantic tho).

 

A big difference in height wouldn't bother me. Right now I'm having a problem with head proportions. The problem is I got Dane because I wanted a boyfriend for Dahlia(RS Lan) and his head is huge compared to hers. I just don't know if that's going to look weird with them as a couple. They're both MSDs and everything else works together with them.

 

if Hayden Panettiere, a real person, can marry Vladimir Klitschko.... then i don't see why two inanimate objects of vastly different proportions couldn't be bound together in imaginary matrimony if that is what you're into.

 

Nooo!~ I thought this would be the case at first when I was buying MSD and YOSD sized dolls, but as I moved to SD the couples remained the same even though their partner was a lot smaller. Its the size of the love that matters!

 

This is good to know! I've never really seen those two sizes side-by-side (I also haven't really looked, to be honest), but, y'know, it sounds like such a drastic difference for some reason, haha.

 

My doll is only 15cm smaller than 60cm, so she could possibly work with an SD. It's hard to find a male doll taller than her, and either way, she's not a human, she's a cat. Not an anthro or a nekomimi, just a cat. So human terms of what's right and wrong don't affect her as much?

 

I agree with it depending on maturity but I have had for a brief photoshoot my MSD and SD boys together. The MSD was a hujoo Leo and his sculpt in general looks slightly more mature than say my MSD impldoll. At least when photographed my Gang they made a somewhat convincing couple. Though I was going for a younger/older couple as it follows the storyline they are in, where Yaun(my gang) is gifted the hand of the Prince (my Leo) so it made sense.

 

I have two couples and they're different sizes. Nero and Hoshi are both in the SD range, but Nero is 70.5 cm tall and Hoshi is 58 cm tall. My second couple (one of whom belongs to my bf) is also different sizes, Apollo is 60 cm tall and Aria is 44.5 cm tall.

 

I believe that it has to be kind of close. But I could totally see pairing a MSD with a SD as long as they look okay with each other.^^

 

Well I've got a trio with 2 SD boys and an MSD girl (she's a faerie)... I have this (probably shamefully sexist) need to have my couples with the boy taller than the girl... I get my panties in a twist when I feel like the boy mold isn't "tall enough" for my girl... like if my girl ends up being as-tall-as the boy if she's in high-heeled feet/shoes then I'd want a taller boy. It just looks better proportioned to me. Though I have no problem with my lesbian dolls being different heights...

It's up to everyone to decide with their own dolls. But I wouldn't pair dolls up that aren't close in size. The biggest difference I'd be okay with is SD and 70cm. Even though the difference would potentially be pretty large, I think SD and 70cm works just fine because they're both 1/3 scale. But MSDxSD or anything similar to that makes me sorta uncomfortable, personally. The scale is too different usually, and it makes them automatically look more like a child and an adult. Though my Limwha Sujan is tall and very mature looking (so much that pairing her with my DZ Mo or my friends Doll Family boy just looks odd), I still wouldn't be able to pair her with an SD without feeling like it's awkward.

 

Personally I like the girls to be a little shorter than the boys if its a heterosexual doll couple, I just think it looks so cute~

 

Couples have to be roughly the same size. I do have one doll couple where the guy is about 8 inches taller, bigger and muscled but they are still roughly the same type and size of doll and it's fine. He just looks taller than she is like she's dating a guy who is bigger and who lifts. I would never pair SD with MSD or smaller dolls with an MSD. It would look too weird.
