Do you take along your dolls on holiday?

Jun 8, 2014

1. I'm currently on a mission trip in Haiti. While I was packing for my 6 month adventure my mom asked me if I was going to bring any. I had decided not to because I thought it would be weird.

She told me "you need to bring one of your dolls along, you'll get lonely without them." XD
I brought my tiny with me in my carry on! Hazelnut in Haiti!

2. If I were going on an extended trip, I might take my MSD with me and leave the SDs in the care of my sweetie. I actually have some off-topic tinies that go with me everywhere.

3. That's fantastic, Dove_Heart! Good for you, having the bravery to accompany a mission trip and giving your time and talent. Any profession those women can learn is always a step in the right direction... and out of the slums. And yay, Hazlenut!

I am that nut who brings their dolls everywhere, even during day trips or grocery runs. I like to look for photo opportunities; there is a method to my madness. That and I simply enjoy the feeling of holding a nice piece of resin. They make great 'irritant spray' as well- someone who might have bothered you otherwise will usually back off because 'Ohey creepy doll! Do not want!'

4. Yes, I would. I already purchased a BJD travel bag and wrap!

5. Dionnysia: the tinnies are just so much easier to travel with! XD

Loptr: Thanks!! I've learned so much here! Surprisingly even people on short term trips who we host tend to like my doll. ^.^ Carrying then with you is a fun way to sort out judgmental people from potential friends!

Moonlightunicorn: Sounds like your well prepared!

6. I always take dolls on vacation with me! They give me a lot of comfort, and I get chances for nice pictures.

7. Not really, but that's because I'm travelling as a single mum with three kids in tow (6 year old twins and a 1 year old at the moment), and I just don't have much spare time. Also, I'm usually travelling in summer to places like the beach and I don't like subjecting dolls to that level of heat (we camp in tents, no A/C for the week).

But I like the idea of bringing my dolls along?

8. I love to take my dolls on my holiday~! It was hard for me to bring my big one that is 66cm with me, but I own a small boy which is YOSD that can allow me to easily bring to all of my vacations I ever had.
I brought him to Bangkok-Thailand, Taiwan, and I planning to bring him to my next destination that is Japan~

I posted some nice pics on my vacations. they are on my flickr! :)

9. Yes, but if it's crowded she usually stays in her sunglasses case.

10. I always try to bring one or two of my dolls with me when I go on a vacation. It's not that hard to travel with them. I usually stuff the bodies in my suitcase and wrap the heads nicely, and put them in my purse. I think of the photo opportunities I would miss if I didn't bring a doll with me.

11. I do with my Tonners dolls, and have with my IP Evan. However, my nieces discovered him and that was a potential disaster (they are 3 and 6).

12. If it is a long vacation then yes, i ususally take 1 msd doll with me. If its a short trip I wouldnt rist taking my doll with me because I am always afraid to damage it.

13. I haven't taken any vacations with my doll yet, but if I did, I would take her everywhere.

14. Took my girl to Japan! She stayed in the apartment almost the whole time though. I wish I took her out more but I always forgot or it was a day where I wanted to go out light. I managed to pick up some cute things for her though!

15. I'm back from my vacation! I was only able to take the boys out to the beach once, but I was able to take some pictures of them around the house we had rented. There's more pictures of them at the beach/beach house on my flickr!

[IMG]greetings from the beach! by Orion Oblivion, on Flickr[/IMG]

THis was such a nerwrecking experience...I'll be honest. It was an 11 hour car ride down there, I don't have a proper bag to fit them both in so they can lay out and be strapped down, and the car was packed. I was SO nervous...but, very thankfully, nothing bad happened going down there, during the trip, or going back home. But....it was TOTALLY worth it.

16. Most definitely, I take my doll when I'm on a holiday. I try to pack as little clothing as I can so I can carry her travel case ( so no need to pass it as luggage). Of course, I need to be careful with the sun and stuff but in general, it's okay.

17. I took my doll when I was an exchange student ^^

18. I do, sometimes. If I have enough time to take photos of them. If I'm going with friends, then probably not. I've brought my Pongpong to Korea when on exchange, and also to Japan but I didn't really take photos, haha.

19. I'm taking a trip to the British Isles in September and plan on taking a doll with me. Haven't decided yet which one but probably either my Lati White or Amelia Thimble.

20. I wish i could say that i do, but i do not take my dolls out of the house (bar the back garden). My family accept my hobby but i don't think i would have the courage to take one on holiday for fear of ridicule. That being said i do have a tiny on order who will be my handbag/travel companion. That comfort of home when i am away.

21. I just got back from sunny Majorca (I live in the UK) and missed my dolls so much :( I arrived home to a new tiny though - I think I'll bring him to the next one ^_^

22. I haven't been on any vacations since I've started, but I do really hope to take my pukifee along places. I basically got a pukifee 'cause fun travel size. I see others doing it and I think it be fun to take pictures. Specially when there isn't anything really fun to take her to around here.

23. I take at least one of my OT dolls with me and increasingly my Tiny Delf

24. i would take my dolls on holiday but it just depends where, if i was going to a bjd market or convention then i would definitely bring a doll

25. I would LOVE to take my dolls with me on vacation, or just around beautiful San Diego! However, I'm super afraid of breaking them and I don't have any carriers right now. The two places I'm travelling this summer are not good doll spots. First I'm going to see my bestie and she is terribly creeped out by dolls and has said in the past she'd have to smash it with a hammer before she could sleep if one was in her house. XD The other place I'm going is to visit my family in Oklahoma, and my mother smokes, and I do NOT want that around my dolls. And she has dogs and cats, who are NOT the most careful creatures on the planet (and really spoiled). I'm going to San Diego Comic Con next week, and I'm trying to decide if I'm taking a doll. I don't have a carrier, as I said, but I'm thinking I might be able to wrap up my MSD in the pillows she was shipped in and a fluffy towel, and put her in my padded laptop case to take her to the BJD panel!

26. I alway take a doll or two when I go in vacation. It's an opportunity to take nice pictures in a different place.

27. The holiday pictures in the thread are adorable! But I don't think I'd want to travel with a doll unless it's specifically to do photography. Airport security, the weight, the stress would be too cumbersome for *holiday*! Plus a doll takes up storage if I want to buy anything on my trip!

28. the reason for me to get into tiny BJDs is because just so i can carry them around with me more often haaha

29. I don't have any photos yet, but I do plan on taking my dolls with me places on the holidays! :D

30. I have one tiny doll that goes on all my "adventures" with me. It's just easier to do with a tiny, even if I only squeeze in one or two photo opportunities, it's better than none and once I'm home it seems to have added a little something special to my vacation/trip/whatever. :)

31. Yes of course ! :D
When I go to holidays for few days or one weeks, I take one or two BJDs with me for picture and other ^^ but when I go for 1 month I take all my BJDs ! I put them in a suitcase and hop x)

32. I leave my dolls at home. I wouldn't have time for a doll on vacation anyway. I have a 6 year old daughter and when I'm on vacation, it's all about her and family time with my husband and daughter. I have plenty of doll time when she's at school. :)

33. I don't travel a lot, but when I do I take my dolls. I keep thinking it would be cool to make my dolls a fancy tent, maybe a yurt, or a medieval pavilion covered in Celtic knotwork or heraldry, so they can camp with me, when I go to SCA events.

34. Depends. I took my BJD camping with me during the 4th of July!

35. it depends. I usually travel (if already bc I hardly ever travel;) with other people, most of them being totally uninterested in the bjds. And it's a pain the the neck to have a human bending over you photographing the damn doll constantly moaning things like: "Omg, you've taken already sooo many photos, can we go now?!" So... I always keep them at home/dorm place.

Plus, when I plan things it's alright, but I have this ill luck with co-travellers who like to take tons of stuff when travelling and walk miles instead of getting a taxi, because "it should be too far from here, so we can walk", so I prefer to keep my dolls at home waiting for me <3

Plus, the constant stress of damaging them or having them stoles :/ not for me ;)

36. I take my dolls with me only when traveling along.

37. Sometimes I do, yeah! I usually stick to only bringing one (and therefore agonize over who gets to go), for simplicity's sake, and if I expect to do a LOT of running around and sightseeing, I may skip the doll entirely. (So I think it's both impressive and crazy that Molliebean brought hers to Disneyland, for instance.) But if it's a more relaxed trip, for instance hanging out in a cabin in the woods, I'll bring one and have some fun taking nature shots. I've also brought dolls to conventions and festivals, though again I only typically carry one around at a time--and really only do it if I'm either going home when the event is over, or the hotel is in walking distance, because sometimes your arms totally need a break.

38. I would take one doll or maybe 2 if i could just all depends where i am going. If it was abroad i would be very worried about the plane journey but if it was an england trip i would most def take them, id miss them if i didnt

39. I would love to but tbh its too much to worry about specially if im going with other people.. I took a nendorid with me on a trip to hawaii and i almost lost her parts and my camera got damged so i dont know that i would do it again

40. Yes! I love to take my dollies away when I travel, specially if I'm going to a new place with beautiful environments.
Lately I only have been taking my little one because she is so portable, but I also like to take the big ones for nice trips.

41. I would most definitely love to bring my dolls out for holidays but sadly i have no chance to so far. If i really bring them for a holiday depending on the location and the luggage i will be bringing with me i will have to pick between yosd, msd and sd. I feel that yosd are easier to carry around and much lighter than sd and thus their weight also pays a part in whether i will be bringing them to the location.

42. When collecting pullips I would often take one or two with me on vacation so I can have a chance to photograph them in a new place. I haven't had a chance to take my msd anywhere since I just received her but if another vacation comes my way after she's complete she will definitely have to travel with me.

43. Sometimes, i took my Hujoo Berry on holiday as she is small and durable. Id feel nervous taking out a resin doll in case something happened.

44. Yep! I'd take them to my grandma's home. She'd love to hold my dolls and take photos. My two boys are a part of my family.

45. The only way I would take my dolls on holiday would be if it were a driving trip and I could leave them safely hidden in the trunk/boot of my car. I would never take them if I were staying in a hotel.

I attended a Barbie collector's convention one time and dolls were stolen from people's rooms. The people who took the dolls were hotel employees. The thieves were arrested, but many of the dolls were still missing. It was horrible. I had 3 of my own dolls stolen at the time. They were a group I'd modded and dressed to look like Arabian Nights characters, and I'd planned to enter them in the doll dressing contest. I never got my dolls back.

46. I've taken my dolls into hotels plenty of times, with no problems. You just have to be smart about it. Don't put them anywhere unsecured and unattended, and don't ever take off the do not disturb sign on your door. The groups I stay with for conventions leave the sign up all weekend, and never lose any of the high-value items we bring with us.

Putting up that sign is an easy way of declining maid service (And likely more reliable at a busy event than requesting the same with the front desk, though you can also do that). With that sign up, only you/your roommates can enter. Housekeeping staff will come back to see if the sign is still up, then leave a note telling you they skipped your room.

Admittedly, you have to be okay with keeping up after yourself, but if you need things like fresh towels, you can get those on request, and you can leave trash/towels in the hall in the morning. It works well, honestly, and dolls are only one of the expensive things in our rooms. Probably the least obvious, too, since there's also cash, computers, and gaming systems in there, too.

47. I like to bring my dolls everywhere!
I've brought Colin (a tiny) more places because of his easy size.
Ex: summer trip which consisted of 2 museums, the zoo, a movie, lots of restaurants, a safari-like tour, looking at all the Wright Brother stuff, and tons and tons of road time because it was a road trip.
But I have brought Rain (SD) through the airport with me for Christmas, and I plan on doing that will all my boys again this year ;)

48. If I ever went on holiday I'd probably take one along. But I've never been on holiday ever so..... Lol

49. This summer holidays I will be taking my Doll with me on Vacation ^___^ so I am pretty excited, because we are also going to an amusement Park.

50. I always take one or two with me when I visit or go to cons :D

51. I'm going to be on vacation in late August, but I don't have a doll yet. Still, if I can afford her before the trip she may be going with me. Even if I have her by then, if she doesn't go with me on that trip, she'll be coming to a small anime convention with me. I so hope I can afford her soon; a trip to Disneyworld isn't cheap. :XD:

52. I took my doll with me to a family trip once, had her always where I can keep my eyes on her. The hotel employees get searched in and out of their jobs (it's hard to leave a tip for them) so I guess it's a bit safe to keep her hidden when asking for room service.

53. I would! Mainly for photo purposes. If I went international, it would be in my carry on. I doubt I'd be too worried about losing it, though.

54. I don't have my doll yet but I am already planning a shooting on the beach with her next year. I would not take bigger dolls with me when I go on vacation though. I'd be super scared they may break or get lost and also my luggage is already heavy enough when I go on vacation for two weeks xD

55. I'm sitting on a beach right this minute with two BJD in my bag. I've taken pics (sadly not good enough to share) and I plan to take more once the sun goes behind the clouds again.

I always travel with at least one toy, and since I started collecting these dolls, they are my usual traveling companions.

56. I love road trips, I really don't like flying much. So packing space wise is a not an issue at all, specially since I have so much practice with my family packing for vacation each summer that is a month long at a cabin. We've become experts at saving space. I mostly travel though for vacation, holidays, and getting to and from home and campus. I think my grandma would kill me if I didn't bring my doll with next time I see her. I've kinda roped my whole family into this hobby.

57. i dont think i would take a doll with me overseas, or to a resort oranything like that... theres just too big of a risk of the doll being stolen or damaged, and they would take up so much luggage room! but if im going on a family trip (and cause im boring, i usually consider those holidays anyway), then i may take just one, cause we would be staying at a safe, familiar place~

58. i brought a 1/6 to japan in summer, maybe 1/4 is also fine but the large size dolls are too heavy to me~

59. @Molliebean Neuschwanstein, what a gorgeous place to take one's doll on holiday, beautiful photo.

I think that photographing dolls outside brings so much more realism to a photo. Seeing them looking out to sea or watching the Tour de France go by, adds so much more than indoor photography. I've only had mine a week but as photography is a hobby I'm intending to take her out quite often for a photo-shoot.
I'll also get some kind of carrying case, a tripod bag looks promising, because I'd be nervous of damaging her during travelling.

60. Well well well ... ! I hope I will :D I have them for too less time, I didn't have any holidays for now. But yes, that's a thing I would like to do. I'm sure it can be very fun to take some pictures of them when we're away, and share it with friends, after that :D
