Do you take along your dolls on holiday?

Jun 8, 2014

    1. I've taken my girl with me to an anime convention so far, and plan to take her with me to another in October which will be more of an actual 'holiday' because I'll be staying out of state with my sister xD I'm definitely looking forward to it~! (Even if I am a little nervous, I'm determined to never set her down anywhere o__o)

    2. I do, always, at least one of them. I often choose the ones easiest to travel with, or specific dolls that I want to bring to our meet ups (which creates a huge dilemma as to what I'm going to bring with me this year for the Christmas meet because I'd like to bring my centaur boy but also my two new SDs.... and I can't obviously fit them all in one carry on bag...). To clarify, we hold our meetups in Athens where my parents' home is and where I stay for vacations most of the time. When I go elsewhere -like right now that I'm on an island for work- I always get what's most convenient (in my case, an MSD and one off-topic pure neemo)...

    3. maybe, id prob feel safer taking one of my DD's, as they are standard models not like my Mia which is worth a lot more and kind of irreplaceable if she got lost, stolen or broken, plus DD's are a bit more robust and lighter, i mean the clothes, hair and boots alone on Mia are worth hundreds.

but it would be fun to take on a trip, id prob feel more comfortable to becasue i know i wouldn't meet anyone i know. and i think some other places might be a bit more accepting of a guy carting around a doll

    4. I never did so before. And every time, at the end of the trip/holiday I feel so bad for not taking one cause along the way I always see so many places I could take pics with them. So next time without a doubt I take one with me! I actually took one with me a couple of days ago on a one day trip in my backpack (stuffed with pillows ofcourse), but I wasnt able to get her out because it was raining to bad. But at least I didn't feel bad anymore for not bringing a doll.

    5. When I began, I thought I would not. But with IH's pirates, I am really longing to take some photos of them at the beach, so I guess I will have to...

    6. I wouldn't. Too much risk of damage and if I'm vacation, I wouldn't want to carry one around. Doesn't mean I wouldn't take it local for specific pictures purposes.

    7. I take them across states when I attend conventions. Does that count? Honestly I haven't been on a "relaxing" vacation in years. We go canoeing and hardcore backpacking and I don't have space for a doll.

If it were like a Disneyland vscation, I might bring a tiny doll or two if I can find a secure way to transport my pukifees, but I'm afraid I'll be too busy worrying about them to enjoy my vacation.

    8. I always bring dolls with me wherever I visit . I did a very crazy thing once .. Hauled 11 dolls from Europe to the USA and back. By plane . It was a nightmare and I swore to myself I'll never go overboard ever again xD I have lots of pictures of me& one of my bjds in various locations such as Pompeii and Notre Dame . I can't post pictures right now because I have them on my laptop and I 'm browsing with my tablet but I'll come back later and post some if you don't mind:).

    9. I've done a couple of day trips just to get pics of my OT travel doll. I haven't had much of a chance to yet with the BJDs - too hectic lately - but I'd like to. I can carry a Pukifee or two in my other doll's travel case. (I did get to a state park for photos, but not all of the doll pics came out, much to my dismay.)

    10. If it was by car and just to see family or something maybe. Otherwise, I'd be too worried about him being lost in transit or something! Plus on longer family vacations we usually spend our days doing TONS of stuff and I would get no chance to do anything with him. Conventions are a yes! Carrying a doll around is the BEST way to meet other doll owners and people who are interested in the hobby. Plus if you match, it's even better. I've seen plenty of girls in Lolita clothing carrying dolls with similar dresses. :D Maybe one day.

    11. I wanted to take my doll on vacation/work related conference; but it is next to impossible to carry the doll around when there are millions of things to do. I think it would be better to take the doll on a cruise, but I am not a cruise person.

    12. I'm at the airport right now, going on a spur of the moment trip!

I decided not to bring my kid delf girl with me. I was too worried about her getting lost or damaged. I have this horrible vision of having to check my carry-on because the plane is full, and then my luggage being lost! Or someone taking her from my hotel. Or her being damaged somehow. It goes on and on xD

But... Sitting here at the airport, I wish I had her with me

    13. No, I don't think I would unless there was a place that had a scenery that I reaaally wanted. I've learned from experience that it's not good to take expensive things with you on trips. :'(

    14. I don't go on holiday/vacations too often, but I always bring a doll or two when I do. Sometimes it's because I want to take pictures in certain places, sometimes it's just because I want to have them with me. More often than not, I'll grab an MSD and one or two YOSDs--whatever/whoever I can fit in my doll bag. I'm always a bit worried about them getting damaged or lost, but I tend to watch my valuables like a hawk, so I haven't had a problem yet.

    15. I enjoy taking my dolls places with me. My Boyfriend and I drove to Dollism in New York and I took several dolls with me. Here is my Soom Grit Aldric at Niagara Falls. It was so cool to get pictures of my dolls (mostly Aldric because he is little and fits in my camera case) in so many different states.

    16. I love bringing an off-topic doll with me anytime I can manage it! :) When I finally get my first bjd (will be a tiny), he/she will definitely come on holiday! I love taking photos with them.

    17. I have one place where my family goes camping quite a bit that I'd love to take a couple of dolls too. It's a place that's actually still close to civilization (despite being a place for camping) but there's lots of nice trails close to rivers, waterfalls and meadow-like areas that would be great for photos and I wouldn't have to hike out too far with the dolls and camera equipment. Hoping I can get some time off this summer so I can go on the trip and get the opportunity to take some decent images!

The only thing I'd be worried about is leaving them in the vehicle or tent when we're off to do something else. The campgrounds are monitored by park staff and the local police, but we've still had some things stolen over the years (mostly beer). So that's always a worry when bringing them along on a trip!

    18. Sure, I do. I took my Volks SDGrG Cristal to the south of France back in April. It was so nice taking pictures of her at the chateau we stayed at.

    19. I will be bringing mine with me on holiday for Christmas this year. I'm debating whether I should bring one or two or all three >.<

    20. I love to bring my RealPukis along with me when I travel! It's just too easy to sneak them into my luggage!

    21. I can't not, because I'm the soppy doll owner that misses them too much :)

      Here's Miya at Greenwich, London.

    22. It depends on the trip for me, honestly. When I go to anime conventions, there's always a few dolls along with me, so I can take them to the BJD meetups and share them with others at the convention. As for other trips... it depends on whether they'll be safe on the trip, and whether I'll have time to do anything with them. I may take them with me when I go home for Christmas, for some photos with the lovely snow my parents are bound to have, but only if I'll have time to really take those photos with everything else going on.

    23. I haven't yet. I guess I would consider it as long as It's not on a plane. I can't afford the luggage space!

Though, I'd be very worried of damage the whole time :S

    24. I do. I always taken my girl with me on holiday. :)

    25. I have to say, although I missed my Kat terribly, I was pretty glad I didn't take her along after all. I took my off-topic hujoo kitty instead and he got incredibly dusty. Maybe it's just because he is white, and abs plastic (and Vegas is a desert city), but I would have hated to bring Kat and have her get all dirty.

    26. I couldn't imagine traveling with any dolls unless it was to a con. As a rule I don't travel with anything expensive, with the exception of a maybe a camera, or if it's work related, a computer. Plus I like to pack really light, and even for extended trips somewhere I'll still only pack a small carry on bag. I'd hate to worry about them getting damaged or lost or something. To me it seems like an unnecessary added stress. But traveling already stresses me out, so I guess for others it might be okay. It's just definitely not for me.

    27. Definitely not the larger size. I don't want them to get hurt accidentally. However, I do think you can bring the small ones to take pictures. You can take them along with you so it is much safer.

    28. I ended up taking my SD boy on a trip with me, and it was super tough!! He was just too big and caused more harm than good (I tried to take his head off without anything but my bare hands and jammed my finger in the s-hook </3 he also took up a lot of room in the dorm) the only reason I'd take him on another trip will be when I head to college, and then he's staying at my dorm! My MSD may not be as much of a problem though since he's a lot smaller and lighter.

    29. If I were going on a road trip, then I just might! On an airplane, not so much. I think airport security might be slightly weirded out by a big SD sized doll in his or her own bag going through the scanner. hahaha.

    30. LoudOwl, they really don't care that much that I've noticed! I fly with them to conventions (generally MSDs and Tinies, though, since I only just recently got my SDs), and they've never raised an eyebrow at my bags going through.

    31. I took my first two BJDs with me on my honeymoon to Disney World. My husband went, too. Both dolls were SD size. One was a 57 cm Narae, and the other was my 60 cm Narin Charisma. I took lots of photos of them. It was great fun. They rode around with me in a backpack designed for a laptop computer.

    32. I don't take my dolls on holiday/vacation/funtimes. I want to, but everytime I decide to, somebody responsible who loves me tells me I'd lose them and to leave them at home. So the dollies only come out for doll meets.

    33. I've been thinking about it. I'm hoping both Avery and my new doll will be finished in time for Anime Boston, so I am planning to find a doll meet there to take them, plus I really want to take them to the pier at one point too. But because they're not complete yet, neither of them traveled over my holiday break.

This is another big reason I want a tiny. Between my phone camera and my purse, I could take doll photos so many places with a tiny. XD

    34. I'd really love to! I just don't have the money (or time) to get away for vacation! I am trying to get used to having my dolls in public without worrying about what others think. I'm going to try my best to get them outside more for photo ops, and start there!

    35. I'd probably only take one of my smaller dolls. Definitely not Estellise since such I don't trust airline companies to handle bags gently, plus she's a tad big to take as carry on.

    36. I'll be leaving for North Carolina in a little over a week, and this is the first vacation I'm going on since getting into the hobby, and getting a few dolls. OF COURSE, I'm going to be taking my two boys with me!

      So, I was curious:

Does anyone else take their dolls with them on vacation? What do you think of others who bring their dolls with them? Do you have any tips, suggestions, stories, Do's/Don'ts, or anything else to add?

      :celebrate

    37. I do! I just got back from Toronto with Ben a little over a week ago. :)

The funniest part was going through customs, when the security guard saw him and asked "WHAT is THAT?" then got bored with my mom's doll hobby explanation and waved us through. XD I also had to take him through security at the CN Tower, and they required me to take him out of his bag and open his headcap to be sure I wasn't hiding anything. Mostly, it's pretty easy sailing. Some people will stop you and ask about them, but they're usually just nice, curious people. The hardest part for me is travel between hotels. Our first day in Toronto, we arrived around 10am, and couldn't get into the hotel until 3pm, so I had to take Ben everywhere with me. I refused to leave him in a car, as heat can yellow or damage them, and he could get stolen. he's 62cm, and he got heavy, but it was okay because I got pictures of him everywhere I went. :D The rest of the trip, he mostly stayed in the hotel.

I think it's worth it, for pictures like this:

    38. Oh, I would love taking trips with my girl soon~
I usually take car trips though and you can cuddle with your dolls while on a roadtrip which is enjoyable
But like going to a vacation possibly I will just pad her in my backpack and a face protector to protect her faceup and since I don't have a carrier bag used for dolls, I guess she would sit down in her cushion bag inside my backpack hehe :sweat

    39. I guess it depends what type of vacation :) If I go to the places with a lot of water, heat and dust I never take my dolls with me,I just don't want that unnecessary stress *_*It's a different story if I'm off to visit my mom or my sister for my vacation -clean,dust free environments :dance

    40. yes yes yes! always take someone with me. it is even better if it is 'dolly holiday', but even without i always take a dolly with me. My collection is of other dolls as well, and i am relatively new to bjds, but i have realpuki Soso, Roro, and Titi, and also a Dream high Studio micro Boo Giggle, so they are easy to transport. I guess i am going to work my way up through the sizes!!!! fun fun fun!

    41. I did this and it was funny. The funniest thing was to see the people around me- wondering what I am doing there

    42. I've never had the opportunity to, but I don't think I would either way. I'd be worried about leaving them in hotel rooms and I tend to like to get outdoors a lot if I am away so it wouldn't be the most ideal situation to be carrying round one of my BJD peeps!

    43. Yes, I take my dolls with me on vacations, out to dinner, camping, to doll shows, occasionally to work, and sometimes to my knitting group. My friends enjoy seeing them.

    44. I always take a doll with me to vacation. It's super fun, but sometimes the security going through your bags gives you odd looks. Before I had bjds, I had Pullips, and one time a museum security guard and I got into a conversation about her sister's Blythe and Pullip dolls in the security line!

    45. I would love to take my dolls with me on vacation! But my hubby or family always stops me, saying I'd prolly lose them or something. :pout:

    46. I took my doll on holidays with me once back when I got her. It was a bit awkward through the airport (carryon has to go through an x-ray in Aus even for domestic, I don't know about anywhere else) and they shot me funny looks but didn't say anything. Aside from that, it was plenty of fun to take her to the top half and relax with her after a busy day at a con (didn't take her because I was too scared of breaking her, still a baby in the hobby at that time).

    47. >_> I have yet to go on a really, real vacation since I started this hobby... Usually it's just small daytrips to relatively close-by places. This year though, we're going to go to the shore for a few days, so I would LOVE to bring my wather-themed Soom centaur along for the ride there. Unfortunately, even though I have his outfit made, he's just a floating head with no wig or eyes! :sweat

But other than that, I will probably be planning to bring along whichever of my dolls is the most-recently completed one to just keep in our hotel room. :)

    48. I have brought a tiny (puki/realpuki size) or two on vacation or while traveling with me, but I have yet to take any of my bigger dolls along.

    49. I've been taking dolls along on all our trips the past five years, but we have an RV, so that makes it way easier to take along a group of dolls and all their props. I prefer MSD and smaller, and have made special padded boxes for them that stack nicely in the overhead cupboards. Usually I take a group of 5 or 6 dolls along, and there's been some amazing photo opportunities.

    50. I take them on day trips usually just meetups. When I'm on vacations I'm usually with my family so I wanna focus on them and not my dolls. I would like to, just.. Never the right trip comes up.

    51. What is this thing you speak of? This vacation... I do not understand.

Seriously, I would take one or two of my dolls with me if I ever had the opportunity to take a vacation.

    52. Usually when I travel I tend to take my smaller BJDs with me. All mine are tiny BJDs so they aren't that heavy to carry around.

    53. I did take Max on a weekend trip and got lots of cool pictures. It was so much fun I decided that each doll will need a chance to go! I was maybe a bit unusual that I didn't leave him in the room or in the car in spite of his size--I carried him with me at all times in my backpack so I didn't miss anything, so he ended up coming with me on a number of hikes and I even ended up dragging him up a mountain. If one plans to do something like this with an SD+ a backpack is a far better idea than a classic doll carrier as it makes it far easier to tote around your doll. It's safer, as well, as they have a way lower chance of being slammed into something. Max was additionally protected on my trip by the padding from my cold weather gear.

Interestingly, although he was in my carry on he didn't raise any suspicions at all. Literally no one mentioned him, and I went through like...six separate X-ray machines throughout the trip. :?

    54. This year I really want to take one of my dolls to go on vacation with me but still have to think much because he is a bit big and heavy and must be really careful to avoid from any damage. My dolls are just too dear to me...

    55. Haven't taken my dolls with me on one of my abroad adventures, (probably since I hardly go on vacation haha) but I'd like too ^^
I would even try to get in contact with other doll owners in the area where I would go, you never know if you take home a new friendship :)

    56. I took my tiny Doll Leaves Leo to Disney World this past January! I thought I'd bring her with me into the park areas and take some picture with her, but I knew she'd have to be in my bag for most of the day and that she could get tossed around in their when we went on some of the faster rides, so I ended up leaving her in the hotel room for the entire trip, but it was nice having her along anyway! :)

    57. I just did!
I love to take outdoor photos, so I take at least one doll with me, whenever possible. Hardly ever get the chance though. I travel quite a bit with my band, but it's too dangerous to take BJDs on tour. I did take my tiny boy once, but haven't had the time to take photos.
On vacation, I can usually spend a lot of time to explore the environment and to pose my dolls. I also find that hikes are more exciting when I take a doll while looking for doll-sized spaces and details. Carrying more than one doll plus camera and equipment is an issue though …

    58. My Girl is in my backpack to go visit my mum as we speak (not really a holiday though) but i would love a tiny to travel with me!

    59. When I was a lot younger I would regularly travel with my dolls. Whether I was going on vacation, to a convention, or just to the park, I would bring my doll(s) in a basket and carry them around for photo ops in cool locations.

As I've gotten older, I've become less and less interested in traveling with my dolls and would much rather leave them at home and not have to worry about them. I think this is for a lot of reasons. For one, I've gotten to this point where I'm packing lighter and lighter with each passing year, and traveling with BJD's is decidedly not packing light. Two, BJD's attract a lot of attention, attention that I've become less interested in attracting in my older, less conspicuous years. Finally, traveling is when BJD's seem to get the most damage. From scuffs and scraps to broken fingers, I've lived through lots of resin nightmares and I'd really rather not do that again. It would be one thing to take my dolls to a convention (and I'm honestly not ok with the idea of taking them to anime conventions anymore) or to the park for the express purpose of photography, but other than that I'd rather leave them at home.

    60. If we only do surface travel, in the car or camper, I do. If we fly, I really need to think about it. If I do take one or two, it needs to be minis at most. I once tried a carry on with two of my SD's and the weight was over what the airline allowed for carry on. (Yes, they weighed carry ons.)
