Do you prefer to buy dolls from the same maker, or a lot of different makers?

May 21, 2019

    1. This is me!!!

      This is also me!!

My first doll holds the highest place in my heart. My CP/Luts Lishe, all yellowed with age and mis-handling (didn't know what I was doing way back then!!!) is the doll that hangs out with me by my computer. She is the one who started the bjd ball rolling with me. However, as I am getting back into the doll scene (can I say that after spending the last year- maybe it's been two... buying dolls?) I find I have bought based on what catches my eye at the time. I have mostly realistic sculpts, a few stylized, and definately different sizes, ranging from 70+cm all the way down to a little Doll Chateau Larry (anthromorph snail - he's so cute and is my Lishe's companion). I don't have any doubles from any company except one body and 2 heads from an independant artist whom I don't think is approved to be posted here yet (these dolls would rank as my second favorite). I really love Iplehouse (wishlist only so far...) and I really really like SartoriaJ (one head that desperately needs a body!). But I recently got sucked into the Luts site and am pondering a purchase there. So I'm all over the map...and I enjoy it!!:)

    2. so far it seems like I only want dolls from dream valley but occasionally dolls from doll chateau will tempt me and I have a few in mind i might get.

    3. Different. There's so many gorgeous dolls out there. With that said, certain companies have multiple dolls I like, so I'll buy from them more just because of the dolls. But it's not necessarily because of the company. I also like to hybrid.

    4. It's definitely a mix for me. I do love adding all kinds of different companies to my collection, but I also find myself going back to companies where I particularly liked something about their dolls.

To illustrate, I have 23 different companies in my collection, and of them, 11 have more than one item representing them (counting dolls I have on order), ranging anywhere from just two to 20!

    5. All of my dolls are from different makers! They are all so diverse that I have absolutely no theme happening LOL

      • x 1
    6. Already when I started out in the hobby I didn't go for one single company when looking around for the next. I have from some 30+ different companies, some companies I have more dolls from than others, but they're still a varied bunch. I love the diversity it creates, that it isn't a sea of sameness all around. But people should do what they feel for, if they want every release from x company, I say go for it!

    7. I've been in the hobby since 2012, and I only have two [technically off-topic] full dolls, and two heads, that are by the same companies. The off-topic boys are Granado, and the heads are Dollshe. Though, I'm looking to shift one on to a new home this year, as he's not fit in and doll plans are changing. And, I have six full dolls and... several floating heads.

As for loving a particular company, there are a few. I've always admired Iplehouse and Soom, though I own none of theirs, as well as Switch, Migidoll, Crobi; to name a few! I love Resinsoul for their customer service. The aforementioned Dollshe does have some beautiful sculpts, but their wait-times are horrendous. I'll always have something of an affinity for Ringdoll, as I got my first from them, although their own wait-times are almost in the same league as Dollshe presently. Another company I've had good dealings with is Impldoll. My only girl, so far, comes from them, so I feel I need to show them some love. She's an awesome doll. Doll Family-A are always good, too. I've had several of their practice heads come and go, because they're great even for simple practice heads. One sits as a permanent fixture, because he's just too good to be a meagre 'practice head'. Even if he is presently blank! Oops...

But, no, I don't tend to stick with one company when purchasing. My newest layaway is for a BJD Gravity boy. And, I keep browsing the other companies, with Loongsoul and DollZone being recent interests. There are just too many to stick with one company.

    8. I tend to browse around a lot, but I have a few companies I consider my "main" ones that I'll always go to first, and dolls from those companies will usually take priority over other dolls I'm considering - especially when the character is related to/in a story with dolls I already have from them. I think because I try not to make impulse purchases unless the doll's from from a well-established company I trust and I have the money to do so.

Out of the 9 dolls I have right now, 4 are Volks, one is a Volks body with a Luts event head, one is an Iplehouse, and there are two Resinsouls and an Island Doll I brought at Dragoncon basically because they were right there. I'm also waiting on two more Luts and a Pipos. It's pretty much all older companies that were around back in 2006-2010 when I originally got into bjds that I ended up going back to when I returned to the hobby last year. I also prefer dolls I can easily get from dealers or secondhand - the only ones I've ordered direct from overseas are my Iplehouse and one of the Luts I'm waiting on.

There are other companies I'm looking at right now (Granado, Switch, and some of the indie/anthro/pet doll makers out there), but I still have an Iplehouse-possible hybrid and 3 more Luts dolls I definitely want before I consider anything else.

    9. I do try to match aesthetics and I like more young adult dolls in msd size. I have some dolls that do not belong to my group of oc that I have in mind, because I just liked their look. I have made some mistakes though, where I like the doll but they so do not fit the rest of the dolls I have. Maybe I will sell some of them eventually, but there was still a reason for me to buy them. I guess you have to try a few to see what you really like. And I am sure after my first Ldoll this year I will have a better idea of what companies I need some more dolls from. Pictures can be deceiving, a doll you like from the pics can be so different when you actually hold them in your hands or you hate the way they pose. Enfin, its going to take time I guess to find out and decide what route my group will take. I definetly like the more mature and realistic route, but they still can look young and cute. For now my favorites are some minifee sculpts -definetly not all of them and I tend to like the smaller eyes- youpladolls alize line ( i do like my ophelie but she is a bit small) and maybe iplehouse yid (i do not own one yet but do like their aesthetic), I do love the face sculpts on sd dolls, but they are just too big for me to handle. (And also house..)

    10. I have only one doll, but my plans are all from different companies. I love the different art styles in many companies and want to have several to look at.

    11. I prefer getting dolls from different makers, but of the same proportions. I deeply regret those times when I wasn't paying enough attention to how my dolls are gonna go together in the end proportionally, and now I have a lot of "mismatching" dolls that I feel too bad about selling.

Also, I prefer different makers because most manufacturers have very similar idea behind their sculpts. I recently ordered MYOU and Rosenlied dolls, and while I love their other dolls, I can see that owning more than one from each will be like owning two identical ones.

      • x 1
    12. I originally bought dolls from different companies... but my last six dolls were all Fairyland, which is funny because when I started the hobby I didn't even LIKE Fairyland :XD:

    13. This is actually a problem for me because I do like variety, but I'm also picky as heck. I like realism, but at the same time, I don't like every single company that makes realism.
Of the companies I love, I can mention Iplehouse, Dollshe, Supia, LLT, Souldoll, Black Cherry, Argodoll.
I have an exception to this rule. My character, Gerda, is gonna be a Volks SD13 Elena, but she's the only planned Larika character, who will be non-realistic. :XD:

    14. While I have a few dolls from the same companies (Souldoll, Soom) I love buying a variety of dolls. It is always exciting to see how different companies resin feels and looks like, how differently they pose... I do not care for the dolls to all match each other in size and proportions, so this gives me freedom in experimenting

    15. I like the idea of trying new things but clearly I haven't so much as ventured into different sculpts from the same company yet so...
      In my defense, I finally did get a F-01 that's not a Megu-type so baby steps I guess:sweat

    16. I love to purchase from many different artists. Because I want to tryout many brands as I can.

    17. I somewhat unintentionally ended up with a lot of the same maker because I just love the aesthetic, FL. But I only have one of each size and I love them all dearly. I'd like to branch out, however, and I've got two Resinsoul/Bobobie girls, a MYOU, a Raccoondoll, and a Doll Chateau (granted the DC is away getting some serious work done to her).

There have been plenty that have caught my eye (there's an Angell Studio doll that I really want but just haven't hit the buy button yet), but I just haven't been able to afford because of other things.

    18. When I first started this hobby and before I got a doll, I originally wanted to get a different doll that I liked from any company so I could have a nice variety of dolls. After getting my first doll, I really liked the quality of the doll, eyes, wigs, clothing, and accessories from that company (Volks USA) as well as their customer service. I was still interested in other dolls from other companies so I attended some meet-ups. However, once I went to meet-ups with other owners that had dolls from the companies I was interested from buying from or even the actual dolls themselves, I realized there was such a big discrepancy in all the companies. Like, I love Iplehouse and will probably buy a lot of Iplehouse in the future (nice heavy resin, great sculpts and face-ups, costumes, etc), but the smaller sized dolls were too small compared to my SD10 and the larger sized dolls were massive. I felt like I had to get a batch of dolls from each company so that way my BJD collection was balanced out. Like, here is the Volks section, here is the Iplehouse section, here is the Dollshe section, etc. I guess a better way to put it would be more like, "Here's the Volks familiy, now here's the Iplehouse family, and there's the Dollshe family..." Hahaha. Or maybe there is an aspect of the other doll companies that I didn't like that was a personal preference to me or an inconvenience to me. Like, there were a few dolls that were proportional to my Volks doll, but the resin quality was not as good or they didn't come with face-ups and I am definitely not artistic enough to do a face-up. Stuff like that. On the other hand, my best friend has dolls from different companies that are all around the same size/proportion and her collection looks great. It just depends on personal preference, research, and finances I suppose.

So as of right now, my husband and I ended up getting more dolls in different sizes from the first company I started with (Yo-SD, SD10, SD13, SDGr, DearSD) and even branched out to their other dolls (ICON, DD). I think once we run out of dolls that we want to purchase from them, then we'll finally branch out to other companies and start that batch of collecting from there as we also have a few wishlist items from them.

    19. So far (for my human dolls) it's been the same maker, but that wasn't especially intentional - it was just that the first BJD I fell in love with was hers, and it turned out I love her style. I wasn't trying to shell characters for scenes or stories so it's not like I needed them be in scale with each other (and actually, I have three of her six sizes and I don't think the ones I have work that well together).

I'm apparently really picky with human dolls because most I'm not interested in. Some I like, but I don't get that "must buy" feeling, or there's one detail that puts me off. I've recently fallen for Dust of Dolls though and have one on preorder and one coming to me second hand.

For my little creatures and animals, they're mostly from different artists. I just buy what I think's cool.

    20. As my favorite phrase suggests: variety is the spice of life. Thus, I like having a variety of different bjds from different artists/companies. Since all my bjds are either based off my personal OCs/existing characters, they can't all look too similar. I also like having bjds from both more popular companies and individual artists in order to support a wider spectrum of creatives putting their heart and soul into these resin creations. I like having a variety because I don't personally like having too many bjds with same-face syndrome, as each of my OCs is different and unique in their own capacity (outside siblings, especially twins, where similarities are just inherent).

On another note, though—if I had to say there is/are a company or companies I do repeatedly go back to...well, there's Impldoll, Dollshe, and (maybe to some extent, body-wise anyways) Resinsoul. Resinsoul has a couple of different SD bodies I wouldn't mind getting eventually, plus—affordable jointed hands. Dollshe's resin is absolutely superb in texture, and really fun to work with—plus, his male sculpts, especially the more masculine ones, are delicious.

Impldoll—besides having such a wide variety of custom colors on offer—their darker resins are modifiable without the worry of discoloration/color-lightening, they have a variety of different body types in the SD range to choose from, and they've gotten very creative with the sculpts that they offer. Impldoll also takes customer input for body/sculpt ideas, and they are a pleasure to work with. On top of that, their dolls are just top-notch in my opinion. :thumbup

    21. I've had man dolls from many different companies over the years but I found that I like Volks more than anything else so all my dolls are from Volks now

    22. I personally like to have dolls from a bunch of different companies; that way my collection will have a lot of diversity! I'm currently leaning a bit towards getting several Resinsoul dolls, though, due to their many resin colour options and fantasy parts ^^ their dragon and centaur dolls are too cute not to get!

    23. I have been attracted to dolls from the same handful of companies so far. I have looked a lot into different companies, but still have a strong preference toward my favorites

    24. I find myself wanting to try dolls from a few different companies but that might change once I’ve tried a variety of them.

    25. Oh, I like variety so much! So I have dolls from various companies, bust sometimes, a couple from the same company, too. héhé

    26. I just look for sculpts I really love. Once one catches my eye I check what body they are on and what their poseability is like and if they come in a skin color suitable for the character I have in mind. If it's up to standards I'll probably decide to purchase the doll. In that regards companies don't matter much to me.

However if I've purchased a doll from a certain company and notice the doll is poor quality or the customer service is poor quality then the chances are very small that I'll still purchase from that company even if there's a doll I really really like.

Over time I've come to really appreciate companies that are invested in their customers. I have my favorite companies by now that I know are wonderful to deal with and take utmost care to deliver a beautiful product. I also have some companies on my blacklist due to the opposite. I've often considered selling a certain doll because the company was just a pain to deal with but then I figure it's not the dolls fault and keep them anyway.

So while I prefer to have a diverse collection I also love to buy from my favorite companies just to support them because they're awesome.

    27. I like having a variety in my crew. //looks at my crew, 3 Switch boys//. In my defense, Switch sculpts are pretty adorable.

Here's my current crew. I like having different heights as well. But it just puts a weight on my wallet:sigh
      [IMG]

    28. I love many different dolls from different makers since I like when one is very different to the next. I do have a “theme” of creatures and not really any humans, but I prefer one doll to be unique compared to the next. It makes it more fun to me.
All this said, I do own 5 doll chateau, and eventually a 6th on the way. But they are very different one to another. One is a spider, another a centaur, a snail, and a mermaid, etc. :whee:

    29. I like to buy dolls from different makers, but I have companies that I consistently go back to such as Peakswoods. It's more important to me to have a sculpt that matches the idea I have and there are so many wonderful companies out there. I think for males I tend to stick to Switch and RaMcube though.

    30. I tend to buy dolls from only two or 3 different makers. It makes my collection look cohesive. Most of my dolls are from 5 Star Doll and Resinsoul/Bobobie.

    31. Once all of my orders come in, I’ll have dolls from 22 different artists/companies… so I do like to try new things. That being said, I do have favorites amongst the bunch that I continuously buy dolls from.

    32. Until recently, all of my dolls were from different companies! I have the most from Resinsoul/Bobobie (3) but I also have two Comibaby Doll Cutie girls, which surprised me with their great engineering and cute sculpts.

I think my collection (past and present) goes something like this:

      Luts x3
      Resinsoul/Bobobie x3
      Fairyland x2
      Comibaby Doll x2
      Bluefairy x1
      Cocoriang x1
      Volks x1
      Aimerai x1

I'm probably going to stick within these companies in the future though.

    33. I'm a "different companies, similar aesthetic" person (and a "hybrid everything!!" person). Migidoll and Oasisdoll make up the majority of my dolls, but I also own Iplehouse, Monochrome, Freedom Teller, Volks, and Rosettadoll. Switch and Luts would also fit nicely if I ever take the plunge!

      • x 1
    34. I think I landed somewhere inside "stylistic realism" where my dolls don't look like realistic people but they also don't have such exaggerated sculpts that they look cartoonish, and I definitely did want different makers but I ended up with a few from the same maker kind of by accident.

My goal was always to try to match my dolls proportion-wise across makers. Eyes should be ~14mm, height should be ~60cm give or take, head should be 8-9in, etc etc. and if a doll I like doesn't conform to the proportions then I try to put them out of my mind. I have a couple of girls who are on the shorter side, but this approach really helped me as I scanned around for dolls in different companies.

I would make an exception for a Shiwoo elf, probably, but I've already mentioned "dolls I don't think I'll ever own" somewhere else...

    35. Trying to stick to 1-2 makers so I don’t go too far down the rabbit hole :p

    36. I prefer getting my dolls from different makers because I like my dolls to have different aesthetics and personalities.

I realize I tend to gravitate towards Korean makers though, so it's a mixture of Illusion Garden, Switch, Souris Etoile, Lemoon and Prime Frame for me.

    37. I have different doll brands for the bjds I own. I found however that my favorite dolls are by Doll Chateau and Volks. If I purchase another doll it will probably be by either of those two brands. I do however have a pre-order for a Lillycat Ninon. She will be my first independent doll maker doll.

    38. I have dolls from different brands (2 True Love, 1 MYOU, 1 Fairyland, and then my next one will be Withdoll) - all MSD but ranging from 41-46cm. I want them to be able to work in the same “world” but still have their own individual style.

    39. With my purchase of a second doll from the same company, I finally have an equal number of dolls and companies they're from. Everyone was from a different company, with one hybrid. So, well, can't say I'm a one company kind of person :XD:

    40. I'm currently sticking to just a few companies and artists because I like their style best, but I don't want to limit myself. One of the things that I like about this hobby is never knowing what comes next. I'm looking forward to discovering new companies and new artists whose creations will be irresistible to me :)

    41. I like to have a variety of different companies dolls. But I do have one company that I try to buy whenever they do have a release because I love their sculpts so much

    42. I have dolls from lots of different companies; though there are some I come back to time and again (Fairyland, Resinsoul, Dream High Studio, Daisy Dayes, Dream Valley). I DO like trying out new companies, but it's not really a factor when I buy a new doll. Aesthetics and articulation are most important for me, but I seek out other's who've bought the same or similar dolls to get their impressions first. It's all well and good if the doll can bend like a yoga master, but if they can't hold that pose even with sueding...

I'll say this though, it IS exciting trying out a new brand; it's like going into undiscovered territory

    43. For me, all the dolls I own were dolls that I loved at first sight (two are also character from a novel I love), and for me that only happens with RingDoll.
Which is why all the dolls I own are from them, their sculpts, clothing, wigs and everything are really within my taste.
Not going to lie though, I have liked dolls from other companies but I have never actually loved the dolls enough to buy them.
It’s also easy not falling in love with dolls that have no faceups, since I am not an artist and I don't want to deal with they anxiety of commissioning a faceup and sending the head and/or doll to an artist.

      • x 1
    44. Ringdoll is always my favourite maker! I'd say that it's love at the first sight so I've always wanted to own its boys but ended up owning Dream Valley because that time I wasn't confident enough to invest much in this hobby. But recently I bought a Ringdoll and the dolls on my wishlist are all from this maker.

    45. Starting out I tried dolls from various makers: Bobobie, Myou, Loongsoul, Charmdoll, and Volks. Eventually I came to prefer the aesthetic and feel of Volks dolls, so my collection is made up of only that company.

      • x 1
    46. I have a lot of dolls from different makers I just buy the ones I like I have a few which are from the same company and the most dolls I own from the same company are Dollzone (older sculpts) and my most favourite company of all time no longer exists which is Dream of Doll I wish I had more of those.

    47. I used to have dolls from different makers. But throughout the years my collection has become tighter and now my collection is only from volks.:kitty2:kitty2

    48. I prefer some of companies, not only one. It’s true that most of my dolls are belong to one, however, I’d like to buy more beautiful dolls, so I prefer various makers!

    49. I would like to have a variety of different makers, because it seems nice to have dolls with slightly different bodies, as well as faces! People in real life have varied proportions, after all.

      • x 1
    50. Personally I am always trying new companies. I've been that way with all my figure collecting throughout the years. I like to see which ones I may like more. Maybe this company has better articulation, or that company has better quality in their sculpts, etc. I'm always curious to see what each company can offer in terms of their products.

      • x 2
    51. A lot of different makers, that seems to be my way of buying dolls nowadays. I love having variety in my crew. I like having my dolls on all different bodies (even though it's sometimes a pain to clothe/shoe, heh), and I play a lot with them and want to experience jointing/posing from as many dollmakers as possible. I have 8 dolls plus a 9th who's currently a floating head, and they represent 11 companies (some are hybrids). So far I've been pretty contented to own one piece of resin from a maker -- full doll, or just head or just body -- and not revisit.

    52. I was really eager to have lots of variety at first, and aimed to have no company repeats -- I now have several dolls/heads/bodies from the same companies, some of them even the same molds. I never thought I'd have any volks and now they're the company I have the most dolls from :sweat I also have a huge knack for alchemic labo, and keep going back to souldoll's bodies.

Not everything I've bought always worked out so I've just leaned more into my preferences over time - it's also nice to recognise how one's taste develops and what it needs to be catered to! My collection is not the eurovision or a trade fair that it needs to represent different companies after all :sweat

      • x 1
    53. When I went to my first meet-up, it was before I even had a doll. There were a few collectors that only had dolls from Volks and Soom. Their collections looked really nice but I knew then that if I ever collected more than one doll that a single company collection wasn’t for me!

I still like how those sorts of collections look nice together so I think I have found a sort of in between. My collection is not very large, but about half are Volks and the rest are something else.

I feel like I am drawn towards dolls from a handful of companies (I don’t own from all of these yet) — Volks, Souldoll, Luts, Supia, Soom, Little Monica, Peakswoods, a few others.

When I buy a new doll I think I am more inclined to add one to my collection if I like most of the sculpts from that company. If it’s the only sculpt I like, I am finding that I am less inclined, maybe because if I have one, I like the option of giving them a friend or partner that best fits their aesthetic.

    54. I have a good mix, I love the variety, but I definitely have some favorite makers, some of whom I've purchased from again already, and others who I haven't yet but would gladly buy more from in the future :kitty2
I do like each doll to bring me something new, but it doesn't have to be new maker, when the same maker has different bodytypes, colors, sculpts to choose from.

    55. I get my dolls from all over! It isn't that I intentionally limit myself to 1 doll per maker/company or what-have-you, but rather that I go where inspiration finds me. I find that my group is close enough in scaling that they generally look cohesive in spite of their various origins, though, so I think my taste is consistent even if the companies I buy from are not.

    56. I enjoy variety but my gut wants me to stick with what I know I'll be happy with. It's a bit of a struggle sometimes.

      • x 2
    57. The vast majority of my collection is Volks, but I also have dolls from Dollzone, Bimong, Dollmore, Mori9, Angell-Studio and ANother Secret.

The most important thing for me is that my dolls have to look somewhat cohesive together in terms of head size and body dimensions. This means no super-realistic proportions, which given current doll trends, eliminates a lot of new releases for me. I've tried owning smaller heads (Loongsoul, IOS, Dollmore) but even the lovely sculpting couldn't break my eye seeing the smaller headed dolls as the odd ones out.

I like looking at independant artists' works, who often only make heads, which then leads to the search for the ideal body in terms of posing, sculpting and resin match, so I'm always checking out new bodies that catch my eye to see if they might hybrid with one of my floating heads.

      • x 1
    58. More prefer certain styles, so l love iplehouse, both what I have and not yet owned. I am more like that kind of person that keeps buying from the same company once I found them good unless they really disappoint me

    59. My taste varies a lot so the only real constraints I really have on my collection are ease of purchasing, cost and whether or not they’re going to require dismantling and blushing to get the best out of them. I’m clumsy and not good with handling blushing so tend to avoid dolls that require it no matter how much I love the sculpt.

Although I don’t intentionally stick with particular companies I’m going to buy their dolls if I like the sculpts, it’s purely coincidence that a large percentage of my bjd are made by Fairyland.

    60. I like variety, but have some criteria regarding detailed, expressive hands, and body posability etc that I seemingly cannot let myself negate on, so there's that. But, with those variables accounted for, yes, variety, and different doll makers.
