Do you prefer to buy dolls from the same maker, or a lot of different makers?

May 21, 2019

    1. I was wondering, I'm quite new to the hobby, I only so far have bought one resin BJD (I also have one 3D printed BJD that I like a lot, but don't think I can make a profile for her because she's not resin), when you buy a new doll, do you usually go back to a maker that you've previously had good experiences with, or do you prefer to try out a completely different makers' dolls? Personally, as much as I'm in love with how the doll I have bought looks, when I have enough money to buy a second resin BJD, I think I'd rather have the experience of buying from a completely different maker for a doll with a significantly different look, as I love to have new experiences.

    2. I really love Ringdoll so I have two from them. They keep making awesome sculpts and I'm considering getting a new doll this year but... I want it to be a different company because I actually like the variety. XD

    3. I have so far always gone for a different company because there's always been something in the previous doll that I want to be different in the next one. But now I'm running out of companies and starting to go in circles since the types of dolls that have rather non-realistic facial features (large eyes etc) or baby/child dolls/mini dolls don't interest me for now. I bought my first doll from Dollshe, but the doll left kind of a negative impact on me because he was a fashion-size doll with SD measurements. I was a newbie in the hobby and nothing I found seemed to fit him, which was frustrating. Next I went for Ringdoll, but I kind of missed the attention to detail in Dollshe sculpts and didn't like the basic-ish resin selection... So I bought a Venitu which is cast in Dollshe resin. Then I wanted an Iplehouse girl. And now I'd be back for Dollshe if it weren't for their terrible wait time.

The bad thing about different companies is that if you want to be precise when photographing your dolls together, even two same-size same dolls from different companies can look off-scale when put in the same photo, because simply the head sizes, foot sizes, leg length etc vary so much. My Ringdoll grown K looks like a long-legged giraffe with other dolls sometimes, but his head is much smaller than Venitu's, which surprised me. But I've learned not to be picky about it, they're dolls after all.

    4. Lots of makers! XD a lot of my dolls are hybrids because I buy heads randomly.

    5. My first.... seven dolls were all from the same company. XD;; I figured, why mess with a good thing... I was very happy with my first purchase, the quality was great and I really liked the look of the sculpts they were releasing.

Lately, though, I've been very interested in trying out different companies - my recent few purchases have all been made by companies that I've never owned a doll of before. My most recent interest is "indie" Chinese sculptors, and my latest doll will be a hybrid of two such sculpts. ^-^ I guess my preferences have changed over the course of my time in the hobby. I still really enjoy my older dolls, though.

    6. Being a newbie, it would be preferable to also have a good doll from a different maker. I admire ringdoll but then others have gorgeous dolls/ head sculpts as well. It is really nice to hear from experienced doll hobbyists. We get great ideas ^^

    7. My collection is a pretty big mix of companies although I do have a few that I go back too more than others. Example: I've got 6 dolls from Fairyland, 4 from WithDoll and 3 from DollZone but other companies I've only got 1 from like Iplehouse, Asleep Eidolon or Mystic Kids to name just a few.

They all hang out in different groups depending on their story/universe and I tend to keep their styles similar. When I say that I mean I wouldn't put my Iplehouse girl in a story with a Fairyland girl because they're too different aesthetically to look good together in photos :sweat

So yeah, to make a long story short I'm definitely a fan of buying from lots of different companies. It's fun to have so many different aesthetics to look at; from the realism of Iplehouse to the more stylised sculpts from Fairyland and DreamOfDoll. I love them all~ <3

(Someone take me away from my computer so I can stop rambling on like a loon. it' far to late here for me to be typing coherent sentences xD haha~)

    8. Generally, I would say different companies, especially since I love hybrids and a good number of my dolls are not from one company all on their own. Once my latest head arrives the hybrid count will be up to 8. But there are also companies that just generally make things I like, so I do come back to the same artists a lot too. I have two heads that are not only the same artist, but the same sculpt. And three dolls in dramatically different sizes by the artist who made Zaoll. So I guess the answer is, I buy whatever company's doll meets my most recent vision, whether it's a company I've bought from already, or not.

@Magical Rin Same. My MSD dolls are Unoa/Fairyland hybrids and a Supia, so they look like weird mini teen/adult characters next to my SDs and have to have their own separate world.

    9. A little from Column A, a little from Column B. I have dolls from multiple companies, including several from Volks, Iplehouse and so on. Some companies have one mold which catches my fancy, while others have quite a few.

    10. I choose a doll by the look of the OC I'm going to create. I always read the company feedback before I decide, but even if it's good, I would hesitate if I wasn't able to order through a dealer I know and like (I had it with Spirit Doll), mainly because of the language barrier. BJDs aren't cheap and I feel more comfortable if there is somebody who is my representant.

    11. I tend to use the same dealer over and again, but the doll company is prettymuch always different... i tend to only want the "best" sculpt i see from any one company, or i fall for a head, but hate the body so have to plan for a hybrid

    12. I have a few companies my dolls are from. I own the most from Fairyland and Luts, but I also have Switch, CustomHouse/Aidolls, Soom, Aimerai and a DollFamily A (technically he hasn't shipped yet so he'll be home some time next month). And I have plans for a few other company dolls too. Dollzone, dollits, myou doll and a couple of others. It depends mostly on the doll sculpts and bodies rather than the specific company.

    13. My bijd collection is from multiple companies. One here, one there, whatever catch’s my eye. Now that my collection is mostly anime styled dolls, I would love to have at least one from every company that makes them, just for fun. Ha, yeah, my wallet says otherwise.

    14. I personally enjoy variety, and owning dolls from multiple companies has taught me what I like and what I ought to be looking for in the future, but I have learned the importance of looking at all of the doll's measurements if I want them to look at least somewhat similar in proportion to an existing doll. :sweat

    15. I like love variety but I also like some form of uniformity. In other words I own from several companies but there's some that I can't bring myself to own because the aesthetic would not fit into my crew. For instance Limhwa is beautiful but just a tad too realistic to fit in with my other dolls :pout: which is entirely my own fault to be so stubborn.

As for doll bodies, I hate the idea of owning 2 of the same body. I've been hybriding a lot lately to avoid having twin bodies.

    16. Different makers! Because I want to collect variety of sculpts, styles, height and body types. I still have my favorite makers that I would buy again from them! :thumbup

    17. At the beginning, I was used to buy from different makers, showing lot of variety in their dolls. But now, after several years in the hobby, I'm focusing on just few companies that I like both for their aestethics and good engineering of their bjd bodies ( a 'must' ).
Anyway, experimenting is the best thing to do when you are new at the hobby :)

    18. Love the variety, so most of my dolls are hybrids or small artist sculpts like Meeky bjd or Minsterminou. I have a few others as well. I own the most multiples from Doll Chateau, but not all are even 100% full dolls. I guess you could say, I have the most pieces from DC.

    19. I originally wanted Dollzone 1/3rd dolls but ended up starting with 1/4 Angel of Dream and kept going. I brancehed out a little bit into different 1/4th dolls: Boy & Girl, Resinsoul, Dollzone, Doll Chateau, Dream Valley, Dikadoll, Minifee's, Nairn/Narae, Dollshe... and some smaller 5StarDoll, Doll Family A Pet, Impdoll, Dearmine, Aileen Dragon, and Aimerai.

I have some more artistan ones too in 1/4th and smaller: Altier cynamon Hassell, Spirit Imprint - She is a Dragon, and SweetDolls/Silverbeam Fairies.

Overall 1/4 range is "my size" and AoD's are still my favorite company. I like how the group looks together even with a wide variety of sizes. I've sort of surprised myself in the past year with how different the group is becoming. I still want a few more AoD's. It would be nice to have one of every sculpt (some are retired and I may never end up with them. Others have changed the way they look over the years).

    20. I started out with only Dollzone/Doll Chateau dolls, but one of my favorite things nowadays (especially since I'm sculpting my own doll) is looking at different joint engineering and styles. Different doll companies sometimes have very differently-behaving joints even if they look similar on the outside. It's just so exciting to me when I get a new joint system that I can take apart and examine.

In general I like for my dolls to look quite different from one another, so buying from a lot of different companies helps with that.

    21. I'm just starting out and recently bought my 5th doll. Each one so far is from a different company because I'm trying to see what I like and don't like. I've bought from MYOU Doll, Fairyland, Doll Leaves, Resin Soul, and Dollshe. My Fairyland Minifee is my fav so far, mostly because the magnetic hands and feet make getting her dressed so much easier! I've gotten them all in 1\4 size so they look pretty good together. The head sizes are so different depending on the company, but it doesn't bother me much since I rarely photograph them together.

    22. A little of both here, too. I like a wide variety of styles and have dolls from many artists/companies. I do have quite a few from Kaye Wiggs, Meadow Dolls and Circus Kane, though.

    23. Between my on-topic human-type dolls and my off-topic/questionably-topical "creatures", there are something like 35 different companies represented in my collection these days.

That said, the vast majority of my dolls over-all are still from two sources... Volks or Cerberus Project (either the old CP/Delfs or more recent Fairyland sculpts).

So... I guess it's a "bit of both"-situation. I have both a lot of different companies *and* a collection that's heavily focused on sculpts from the two favorites.

    24. I prefer different companies or at least different sculpts and bodies. I like a good variety and the realism of a range of different types. But I do however have a strong love for Luts and currently have two full dolls, three heads and a body by them.

    25. I buy from different companies I don’t want to buy 2 of the same bodies.

    26. I like buying from different companies and I'm particularly fond of buying from artists! I love the variety in artist dolls; I think they tend to look much more unique than company dolls, which often share a very similar look based on region. That being said, I'll totally fess up that I'm really fond of fairyland and will probably end up with more than one fairyland girl eventually.

    27. I like a great variety of styles amongst my doll crew, so I always buy from different companies! There are so many great doll companies and individual sculptors, so why stuck with only one company to buy from?
Although to be frank... If I could afford it, I'll buy every single one of the LLT dolls, because they all look amazing <3

    28. If I had enough money, I would buy all dolls from the makers I like the most. But for now I just can afford some dolls, so I’m more focus on sculpts then makers.

    29. The dolls that I have at home at the moment are all from different companies (I have 8 full resin BJDs + 1 floating head and 1 ABS doll). I mainly just buy which ever dolls I like without paying much attention to the company.
My main problem with buying from the same company is I don't like to own two dolls on the same body - so unless the company has multiple bodies available, or I know of a hybrid that'll work (although hybriding is stressful for me so I try to avoid it), once I have a doll from that company I tend to not buy from them again.
That being said I have two more dolls on the way from a company that I already own a doll from and I plan to own a few dolls from DollZone in the future. It's always good to have variety but I do like owning dolls from the same company sometimes when possible, especially if I've had good experiences with that company in the past. I love when I come across a company that I like the majority of their head sculpts from AND they have multiple bodies as an option.

    30. I like having dolls from a variety of different doll makers, though I am a bit obsessive about them all being a similar scale. I have multiple dolls from some companies and only one from others. I don't mind if some of my dolls have the same body, since that means they can share clothes. I prefer to order through a dealer in America when possible, since it makes communication easier.

    31. I have a bunch from Luts because I really like the sculpts and their posing abilities. So I think it really depends on the person. Also the fact that they all exist inside my story so I'd like the sculpts to be a bit more coherent rather than having a more bigger eyed doll and then a super realistic one.

    32. being a newbie, I browsed many doll maker websites. so far, IOS is my favorite, coz the boys there match the best to my aesthetics and what I want them to be. I think i will keep tracking their news and keep buying from them.
before buying any BJD, I thought ringdoll will be my favorite coz their pictures are so beautiful. after getting one, i was so disappointed.

    33. My Go-To company is Impldoll. The majority of my crew consists of their 70 cm Idol guys. As I always have very firm requirements, as far as it is possible I also use their headsculpts. Only if they do not offer what I want, I hybrid them without mercy. That way, I have a head from Dollzone, the other one is from Mirodoll. But mostly and wherever possible, Impldoll FGB Idol with a character head. Even the two ladies I have are on Impldoll Star bodies, as I find them incredibly elegant and graceful. And well, also excellent posers.

I love Impldoll so much because they offer such an excellent customer service. They do custom colours, and you can always ask if you want something different.

    34. I only start my collection now, so I want some dolls from fairyland. I like the minifee body most of all msd. But in future I want to explore other companies, for example I like migidoll and switch sculpts.

    35. *looks at my hybridized motley crew* Lots of different makers, apparently. Although older Dollstown bodies, and older Volks heads are the most common in my collection, I own parts from 13 different companies. But since my dolls are old-skool, they all look similar in style. No hyper-realistic dolls next to Bugeye McBubblehead. My dolls are ALL Bugeye McBubbleheads :D.

    36. I go by what the sculpt looks like, so have several heads from a couple of companies where I particularly like the aesthetics of their sculpts (RML and Ninodoll), and others (from a variety of compaies) that have caught my attention. I have more RML heads than any other company, but Ninodoll would run them a close second if I hadn't already got so many BJD's before I discovered the delights of the smiley Ninodoll sculpts.

I have a lot of Volks bodies and quite a few from DollsTown because I like both, but not many heads from either of those companies.

And I have a number of Fairyland tinies because they do-the-double by ticking my boxes for both face sculpt and body that I like.

      Teddy

    37. When I first started collecting, I fell hard for the Iplehouse aesthetic, and for a couple of years, only bought dolls from them. For some reason I can no longer fathom, I figured that they would always meet my dolly needs. The longer I stayed in the hobby, though, the more opportunity I had to see sculpts from other companies, and I began to branch out...a LOT. It's not that I love Iple any less (in fact, that early resin holds a permanent sentimental place in my heart), it's just that I came to realize that is a world of beauty and variety out there, and one company just can't match it all, doll for doll.

    38. I try to keep things varied whilst attempting not to allow my collection to expand too much.

Fortunately I've found that I favour the style of Doll Chateau so I have quite of few of their (discontinued) sculpts along with a good mix of artist dolls and other company hybrids.

At present I've got dolls from Doll Chateau, Dollzone, Dollmore, Argonautica Doll, Nefer Kane, Misterminou, Tamikan Space, Mewiefish, Twigling and Impldoll (well I'm waiting on the impldoll part) at home.

I prefer fantasy resin types and odd sculpts so I'm very picky about what comes home!

    39. All doll are hybrids, I have brought all my heads and bodies from all different companies and makers. If I had a good experience with a certain company I am more likely to order from them again or recommend them to others.

    40. I can't help it, I just really love Volks dolls. :sweat Their style, their bodies, their resin... I just really like them. I do have two dolls from other companies, but I'd absolutely call them an exception rather than the norm. At this point it's as much that dolls from elsewhere just don't fit in with the rest of the crew as anything else, and there are still so many Volks dolls I'd be ecstatic to own that I basically don't bother looking elsewhere.

    41. My first BJD was an Iplehouse man, and initially I thought my next doll would be from Iplehouse again. Instead, I fell for a couple of male dolls from two other companies - Ringdoll and Luts. So as it turns out, I have three large male dolls, all from different companies, and a fourth tiny dragon from AileenDoll. I really like that all three men differ from each other.

Hoping to get my first female BJD next, and Iplehouse's women are my favourites so far. I'm always open to seeing something I like from other companies, though!

    42. I prefer different companies coz I like to go after sculpts that I fall for. My first 3 dolls were only Volks though, but I was a total newbie back then and didn't know other companies, now I realized what I've been missing. The only downside to that is that dolls from different companies might not look proportional together, for example my Volks dolls heads are huge compared to my other dolls heads of the same size scale and they look awkward next to each other

    43. I don't let that bother me on the grounds that real people don't look out of proportion together and we come in all sorts of shapes and sizes (my husband has an enormous head, for example, and we have an adult friend who can only wear child-sized hats)

      Teddy

    44. Half of the dolls I own are from one company (Dream Valley) The other half are from a good variety of companies.

I just found a company I really liked and am kind of going with it.

    45. at first i tended to buy from a lot of different companies but i feel after some time and after more experience you just end up choosing favorites and gravitating towards them more. Like i ove looking a new companies but i always get a little more excited when dika or ringdoll release something new. for now since your new i say have at it try out as many companies as your heart can handle and as time goes on you'll gravitate towards some more then others, the more different companies you try out the broader the choices and experience you'll get with different sculpts and features

    46. Variety is the spice of life! I have 34 different companies represented in my collection with another on the way.

I enjoy making hybrids and I mainly buy secondhand so my decisions are primarily based on availability. This also keeps my hobby within budget, as I am not a fussy collector and love a large number of dolls.

That said, I have the biggest soft spot for CustomHouse still. They are the best-represented company in my collection. :D

    47. i feel its kind of nice to have a verity of dolls from different makers. i have started looking to dolls made by indevidual artist for there chance of adding something to my collection thats really different looking. i still enjoy my company dolls and their sculpts and looking into the different ways compays are making their dolls and body parts

    48. I like a huge variety of dolls and companies. But I also will buy more than one doll from certain companies.

So... both, all, every! I have a lot of favorite companies, let's put it that way... :sweat

    49. I'm also the same type as april. I buy from different companies but if there's one company I really like I check frequently and have more than one head!! XD

    50. I have dolls from about 14 or 15 companies. But I also have multiple dolls from the same company.
Sometimes dolls of different companies go together better than dolls from the same company.

    51. I like various kind of dolls, it is fantastic to see lots of different dolls from different maker, each one have their own style. It is very interesting.

    52. I didn't strictly plan it this way on purpose, but I guess I like variety in my collection, because every doll I have is from a different company. Even the parts of my hybrids are from different ones, for the most part-- two of them have Miro bodies and I do have Iple hands on two as well, but all the heads are from different companies. I've had good experiences with every company I've ordered from, and enjoy all of their dolls...not repeat-buying from anyone is more about wanting to experience as many different artists' dolls as possible within the scope of a somewhat limited collection, since I don't have space or money to endlessly add to my group.

    53. It's really funny because, when I entered the hobby, I sort of made a few guidelines to limitate the sculpts I liked and wanted to buy. One of those guidelines was to not buy more than one doll from the same company and of course I broke it xD

Nowadays, the general feeling is that there are some dollmakers that make sculpts I like more, and I will likely check more for updates even if I'm not going to buy, just for the aesthetic pleasure.

    54. All the dolls that I have, or used to have and sold, are from one company (Switch) because I love every single one of their sculpts and I feel like they really fit the aesthetic I enjoy! I've admired dolls from other companies a lot but never enough to buy, except one 46cm doll I'm waiting for from Xagadoll, which I hope I end up loving as much as my Switch boys!

Whether you want to stick to one company or enjoy having a lot of variety in your dolls, it's fun to browse different sculpts from different companies! You never know when you're going to find a sculpt you really love:3nodding:

    55. I prefer to buy from a lot of makers, this is to widen my knowledge about the hobby and to be a bit well versed with hybrids and poseability as well. Although, at the same time I also have a favorite company, which is Ringdoll. I've bought a lot of dolls from them because their aesthetic fits mine. Other company's style does catch my attention too, especially when there's something peculiar or distinctive about their dolls.. so I won't definitely limit myself to one company.

    56. I sorta prefer from the same company/maker because of the sizing/similar sculpt style/materials.

    57. I have dolls from different companies. I don't get every single one from a different company, they're just not all from the same company. If I like how it looks then it just being from a company I haven't bought from before really won't stop me from saving up for it.

    58. I love the variety. If I can pick a doll from a company I don't have for one of my characters I will certainly go for it over a similar sculpt from a company I own. The different sizes, the colors, the bodies, the faces... I just love them all!

    59. For me it's more of if I like it, and I have the funds for it, I'll get it. My first doll was a $20 head and a body I got from a friend so they definitely weren't from the same company. I have 2 floating heads that I can't get the same body as the head (PukiPuki Cupid head since all Puki's are currently sold out and a Doll Love Cecelia head that I want a completely different body for). Yes there are a lot of variety of dolls, but it is okay to experiment with others and if you like all the same company that's okay too! It's what YOU want and that is the only thing that matters

    60. I was lucky enough to buy my grail doll as my first BJD so I never felt like I wanted to improve on that. I am always torn however, because I think several of my grail dolls together look beautiful but I also like variety and trying other artists. To me proportion is important, and having my dolls look good together. So I always try to find artists that work with the same aesthetic or proportions. So far I have dolls from 3 different artists/companies and I'm looking into another one even. But I honestly feel like my job here is stopping to buy for a while.
Another thing I like doing is if I like several artists I try to find common points between them and get the best doll out of the mix, for me. This is not an easy exercise but it works when you definitely have favourites =)
