Full sets are pretty but they rarely suit the kind-of vibe I want to get from the doll. If there is a specific fullset that ever catches my attention then a fullset is what I'll save up for. Personally, blank dolls are the ones I tend to gravitate towards more
Usually I'll get the fullset if I want the clothes and accessories, or if the faceup is really good. Otherwise, Ill be getting blanks and send them to faceup artists
Fullset or partial fullset when buying new, especially the face up is a must have. The clothes and accessories are case by case. When buying second hand I would prefer the doll to have a face up aswell, but its not a deal breaker.
I normally get all of my dolls as blanks because I like to customize them! However, I did get my first fullset which was my Gem of Doll Chris because I loved the outfit and the faceup and the price wasn't completely unreasonable!
Personally, it depends on the doll! Since my dolls are shells of my pre-existing OCs (with one exception), I naturally prefer to buy dolls completely blank or nude with a company face-up if I like the default. However, I have fallen in love with full sets such as Ringdoll JN Feiyufu Ver. or various discontinued SOOM monthly dolls. In such a case, I would create a character and story around the doll; I usually have little to no trouble doing so and it's equally just as fun and creative for me!
Fullsets are usually much too expensive for me (like that's a WHOLE NOTHER DOLL i could be buying instead) AND —since I'm a strong purchaser of almost exclusively older secondhand dolls— usually not even an option for me to begin with...
I generally prefer blank because I feel an immense amount of guilt over modifying a fullset in any way (especially changing the faceup!). I would definitely not be opposed to getting a fullset if the set was 100% what I was already planning for that doll, fits well with the character, etc.
Fullset! I am too impatient to send my doll to an artist after I recieve her. Although, soon I will be getting a head I am debating on sending to someone for a faceup!
Most dolls I don’t worry about fullset, as I love to build the character piece by piece. But Fairyland? OMG. When my wallet allows, fullset is the way to go - the designer complete sets are a-mazing!! ♥️
Definitely blank! I love customizing and making dolls my own! But I might make an exception someday - Dream Valley Rah for instance is one where I'd probably go for fullset if I had the chance. Otherwise, I'm content with just looking at the company pictures, lol.
The most I've gotten other than blank was the company faceup and wig from the promo photos, simply because they fit the character. There are a couple full sets that I have LOVED, but I've never bought one for two main reasons. One, they're much more expensive, and two, I'm honestly kinda scared that I won't connect/bond with them as much if they come already completely done. :/
I usually fall in love with full sets - or at least the default face-up+wig combo. Strangely, only one of my dolls arrived in full set and that is an outfit and wig I never really liked, but they came with the limited doll. I can also recall some dolls I fell in love and could not buy, but I would never have bought them without the full set even if I could.
When I have the accessories I want only in the full set I choose the full set, but I actually prefer the possibility of a blank, so if I can I prefer the full set without the face up.
Personally I would get blank ones since I don't want to pay extra money for clothes and I'm learning how to sew. I also prefer custom face up
I prefer order blank dolls, I can do face-up myself and style them. But fullset is also acceptable, if I really want to have the clothes.
When it comes to fullsets, I hope it doesn't come off as mean (no shade to people who love fullsets), but I personally think that it makes the doll have little personality/uniqueness. Plus a lot of the time the faceups for these elaborate full designs are so dependent on the clothing matching that they look off when put in other outfits. Personally, my favorite thing about BJDs is how people craft new characters with the sculpts by choosing their faceup/eyes/clothing/etc. Fullsets seem to me more of a collector's kind of thing than a creative kind of thing. It seems like it would be hard to project a character onto a fullset doll. It almost seems like the fullset version is the artist/sculptor's character, so for example a Littlefee Hwayu with fullset will always be "Hwayu" in her "intended" form, while dressing her up in new clothing and everything will make her a new character. Just my personal feelings on the subject, of course.
I'm not big on blank dolls unless I plan to keep them blank. I have 5 blank heads that I love and think are beautiful blank and will probably never get a faceup but for the most part I prefer fullset or as close to fullset as I can get, though that is obviously very expensive. It really just depends on what about the doll draws me in
I think I prefer full sets except in the case where the face-up does not appeal to me, and getting clothes with the doll is a plus! I do not like leaving dolls nude unless I am actively making an outfit, something about me I guess, lol. The face-up is generally the biggest yes or no for a doll for me, unless I really like the sculpt and would be willing to get something commissioned, that is the deciding factor as I am a very, very novice artist myself.
I think it depends? Some fullset have lovely clothes and face-up, and some I might not like it too much lol But most of the times I prefer blank!!
I will always go for fullsets if they are available. Sometimes because I just like the fullset as is, but also because I like having a set of clothes and face to work with immediately. Especially since the dolls I tend to like kind of have difficult proportions to find premade clothes for: its just nice to have at least one outfit that I know will fit them until I make or buy something else. Same with default faceups- Unless I've got a really solid plan of what I want to do with their face straightaway, I'd just rather have a doll with a face, even if it isn't my favorite, until I feel I want to change it up so it isnt sitting around making me feel guilty for not getting it finished properly
I've found I haven't really had much interest in fullsets even if I think they're gorgeous, I think I'm more interested in compiling the dolls outfits and accessories myself. I do seriously consider getting company faceups when looking at dolls I'm interested in, especially 'cause they often look so nice. Although, so far I've only bought blank sculpts because I had a different idea for the faces in mind and the company faceups didn't quite fit~
I love the look of fullsets, but they're so spendy...sometimes it looks like it'll be worth the extra money, but I'd be terrified of doing any customizing at all if I spent that much. I guess for now my vote would be blank, it seems much easier to get started by having something I can do whatever I want with. But if I came across a fullset that felt exactly like 'me', creatively speaking, I'd probably go for it.
I prefer blanks, because I tend to fall in love with the sculpt and get ideas of how I want the face to look. I tend to want my own outfits, anyways. So no fullsets for me.
One existential crisis later (it's a long story) but I have come to the realization that while I LOVE when Dolls come with the OPTION of a Fullset to match the promo pictures- I have not and likely will not be buying any outside of the odd fantasy creature. I can definitely tell the difference between the boys I pieced together and the Kitsune I bought fully dressed, in that they are now 'characters' and he's just... a prop. An adorable prop, don't get me wrong, but oddly soul-less. Unless we're talking about painted vs not painted, then I am Finished Faces All the Way. I have neither the time nor patience to paint lips or eyelashes, choosing a wig and eyes is a hassle enough thank you.
They are very expensive usually, so I'd go for full sets ONLY if I really, really love the outfit, and it matches the doll perfectly (or my idea of it). So, apart from those rare cases when it happens, I'd say blank dolls!
I prefer blank, as I'm more of a DIY'er and prefer to do my own faceup and make my own clothing. However, there are a select few dolls that I would be willing to shell out for the full set on, namely Charmdoll Circe.
Picking out/making clothes and finding a "style" for my dolls has been the most fun part of the hobby, so I prefer nude dolls. Fullsets also inflate the price a lot, so I'd probably feel bad not having it on display. I recently purchased a doll with her promo outfit though, so I'll see how I feel about that. However, company face-up is an absolute must for me as I currently don't have any interest in getting custom face-ups or working on them myself. It's one of the main selling points for me and I check out owner pictures of said face-up or the quality of the companies' other works whenever possible.
I don't do fullsets, but I will nine times out of ten get the faceup. I'm not as inspired as others when it comes to blank heads and I don't like having to wait and send out a head for a faceup. I'm not very good at faceups and while I know I could use the practice, I prefer to have something of professional quality straight away.
I much prefer blank dolls, since customizing them is the main draw of the hobby for me. 9/10 times the character I have in mind for a doll doesn't match what the company faceup/fullset is going for, so it's just easier (and cheaper!) to buy the doll blank.
Fullsets are very pretty but imho boring. Because everyone's fullset dolls will look the same. and it's the individuality of how people style them that's interesting to me. Besides I think fullsets will never look as good as the styled and photographed promo photos, so they will always be a bit of a disappointment.
So far, I haven't been interested in getting full sets at all (when that has been an option). I did get faceup and body blushing on my human doll, but I'm not 100% happy with his face (it's a little more done up than the promo pics were, which I wasn't anticipating. It still looks nice in person butttttt). My other 3 dolls have been some version of anthro, and I've gotten them blank and intend to send them out. I want my version of the characters brought to life xD I did get the outfit for my Miracle Doll Dio, cause that was perfect for his character. But he also will have other clothing options when he finally comes in xD Customizing is the joy of the hobby for me!!
I prefer blank. I like to choose my own faceup and accessories. When I buy full sets I would usually sell all the accessories and redo all the faceup...
Blank. If released only as a full set, they buy a full set, but in most cases they prefer to buy only the no faceup head.
Honestly I've yet to come across a full-set that I was immediately in love with, so if I had to choose between a fullest and blank, I'd probably go blank - but I like getting a company face up to start with so I don't have blank dolls sitting around since my faceup skills aren't where I want them to be yet.
I usually don't get fullsets, but I sometimes get the doll with a face-up if I don't have a clear idea of what the face should look like or think it'll be a while before it gets one. I have gotten a few over the years that were fulls. It can be nice to actually have something to put on the doll when it arrives; especially if you're doing a box opening at a meet up or a party.
I got into this hobby for the creativity aspect, so would prefer to get my dolls blank. Not to mention if I got a fullset, I'd be too afraid of damaging any part of it to fully enjoy playing with the doll.
Blank I like to do my own faceup or if I have an idea for a faceup I can’t do myself I’ll commission someone else to do it. I don’t really care for full set faceup or their clothes.
I order my dolls with faceup and buy wigs and shoes. I bought three outfits, but it is more fun to create them by myself.
I prefer full set if possible. I always purchase a doll with a face-up. I removed the make-up from two heads thinking I wanted to give them a different look but ended up regretting it. It is very difficult for me to paint on resin.
I prefer full-sets! I wouldn't be confident doing a face-up on my own, and there aren't many artists I could send a doll to for face-ups in my country. I'd rather get the doll sent to me already with it's face-up done! I also tend to fall in love with the photos posted of sculpts in their outfits & wigs, so I do tend to want the wigs/clothes as well!
The full sets definitely draw me in, but blanks are a ton of fun too, especially after having gone through the process of sueding, stringing, blushing, doing the face-up and picking out the wardrobe, eyes and wig! It puts me at a conundrum, actually - I enjoy the full set clothes because of how unique they are, but then the doll feels 'locked in' to that set... but then I have my other dolls I change up quite a bit, so I guess it kind of works out.
It depends on the price. A lot of my dolls are second hand and either come with the company or previous owner's fullset, but I primarily purchased due to me liking how they were styled and the price. I don't think I'll buy fullsets new from the company unless I can't imagine a different look or character for the doll. I do also like blank dolls since you can make them anyway you want, although it can be difficult to style if one is lacking the time and resources to compose the right look.
I always try to get blank dolls when I can unless it's a licensed Dollfie Dream. Some fullsets and company faceups are gorgeous, but I have a really hard time feeling attached to a doll when I don't paint it myself and create its character design. I think customization is my primary means of bonding with a doll. I also really like that blank dolls save you money upfront and can potentially be shipped a little quicker since there's less labor on the company's end.
Right now, I prefer fullsets. I have like no experience crafting yet. At least not for the BJD hobby. All of my former crafts have a tendency to fall apart in the end... Also, designing face ups, sewing clothes and creating props seems a little daunting to me. So, I'm planning to get a fullset first to figure out how BJD's work, trying to glean how things like clothes, props are made before committing to creating something myself. An added bonus is that the doll is not stuck without clothes for the undoubtedly long period of time it takes for me to make something myself. I'd feel bad putting them in a hodgepodge of rags while I'm struggling to learn. But, this way I can also use them as a guide to figure out the size of clothes/shoes/accessories... that fit the doll and I won't buy stuff that is just too small or too large.
I prefer blank dolls for creativity, especially since I love doing faceups, but honestly there are some sculpts that are so beautiful that I wouldn't mind getting a company faceup. Impldoll's latest style specifically is tempting me. And Augus from Doll Leaves, too. But I would never buy a fullset doll, not just because I wouldn't be able to afford it, but because I rarely find dolls that hit all my favorite things. If that did happen by some stroke of luck, I don't know what I'd do.
I appreciate the photos of fullsets when considering a doll but a fullset has never had any appeal to me whatsoever. It seems much more collector oriented and less inspiring to me.
Blank, so I can breathe characterization into them from scratch. Fullsets give me an idea of the potential of the sculpt, but I'd still prefer the freedom of being able to dress my dolls in the way I want them to look like. Fullset costumes tend to not be very ideal for the usual play with dolls since they're crafted to look good in photos, but can be difficult to handle due to the fragility of parts.
I prefer full set as being a busy adult, I dont have the time to research and do the customization myself. It often gets commisioned out. That includes eyes hair and clothes. Also full sets often come with accessories or parts that are unique or hard to find. Sometimes that itself is worth the price
I prefer a full set, they're beautiful and because I don't always know what I want lol or don't have the time to do it myself..
For me it really depends on how in love I am with a full set. Usually I only like aspects of it. I tend to prefer blank dolls because I like doing my own faceups as it's a way to really fall in love with the doll!
the doll i consider my first was a fullset but his faceup has since been wiped, i have a lot of blank dolls...i think only like 4 of my dolls have faceups, some of which need to be redone. There's more potential with blank dolls i feel but if i like a fullset faceup i like it lol
While fullsets are gorgeous, I prefer blanks dolls. Not only because they're cost effective, but also because a big appeal of dolls for me is customizing them myself. I enjoy painting the dolls myself, designing their outfits myself, and all the stuff like that. I like creating specific characters fo my dolls and knowing the dolls are partially my creations. There are definitely situations where I'd consider getting a fullset, but I'd much rather customize the doll myself.
