Full sets can be very beautiful, with the faceup, the wig and the clothes. But they are also A LOT more expensive most of the time than the blank versions. While the full set is pretty, is it worth it to you ? Or do you just generally maybe prefer a blank for more creativity ?
I usually buy blank because while the fullsets may be nice, if it doesn’t fit my plans for the doll I don’t need the extras. I’ve only bought two full sets in the 15 years I’ve been collecting because I loved everything about them and could see the clothes/props used for other dolls too.
Sometimes I fall in love with a doll's fullset outfit just as much as their face; in those cases I'll try to make tbe outfit work with the character! For me the extra cost is justified because the doll is ready to play with right from the box. But blank dolls are fun too, especially because i need to practice faceups
I buy most of my dolls second hand or when I do buy dolls straight from the company very rarely are they even available with a full set. I do want a full set for Spirit Doll's Little Mermaid and Aimerai's Scraps but other than that most of the dolls on my wishlist don't really offer fullsets.
Usually blank. I like to put my dolls together myself, a lot of times I really like the dolls sculpture, but I don't care for the fancy clothing, it is just something I would store away. If I really like the entire clothing set and wig and how well the doll looks put together, I'll save for that full set, because I really like the completed doll.
I usually like looking at full sets, but I'd buy the doll naked and the head with a faceup (cause I don't really want to start doing faceups quite yet). Full sets are great, but my planned dolls usually have a totally different outfit and concept in mind.
Blank. When I look at pics of dolls online to buy, I focus on what the sculpt is like, and also their blank images for clear visuals. I do customization work, so to me, "fullsets" are just kind of glamorous, "display: here is what i can be!" images. XD
I like Full Sets , Blank and then buying a doll second hand and trying to put the full set together myself piece by piece. Its all fun to me! But yes I agree Full sets are pricey.
Blank all the way. Yeah fullsets are nice but never once has a fullest fully captured everything I want/have in mind for the sculpt. No use in paying for all the extra fluff if I can't use it. Stuff like that is hit or miss on if it will sell or not anyway.
Unpainted? Definitely. No-fullset-items? So far, yes... but If there's a fullset I love, I'll hunt it down secondhand. I do own a fullset, despite never having bought a fullset doll.
I like both equally sometimes I just fall in love with the painting of the Fullset or the outfit! Other times I don’t and I do it myself and order clothes. Either way both are so nice
In general, I prefer blank dolls. However, there have been two exceptions to that rule: the first issue of Iplehouse's Claude (knight), and IOS Dr. Strange (even though he is out of scale). I would love to own both of these fullsets, they are perfect IMO. As this is not possible, I will somehow create my own versions - both of the knight, and Dr. Strange will be part of my group of action dolls (with a different sculpt from a different company).
If the styling is exactly what you want, then why not buy it as a full set? It's going to save time and money down the road procuring eyes, wigs, costumes, a face-up, etc. If you love a doll but the full set isn't doing anything for you, buy the standard version (or if one isn't available, buy the fullset and sell off what you don't want). I personally buy the majority of my dolls secondhand, so even the full sets don't usually come with everything they did originally. Seriously though, I'm definitely more of a blank doll person vs. a full set doll person. I enjoy commissioning artists or buying with different artist face-ups.
I always get full set because I absolutely love Fairyland outfits/faceups. The only one I won't be getting a full set of is Alicia. I love her face but don't care for her outfit or wig. She'll probably be my only 'customized' girl.
Oh whoa ! I'm actually a little jealous of that~ that must be a really amazing collection you have then ! How many of the fairyland full sets do you have ?
I'm totally open to a full set if I ever encountered a doll that seemed right for me just as it was. However, I always feel really inspired by the blank faces! It's unlocked potential, and for better or worse, it's what I seem to gravitate towards.
I love fullsets, but they sadly, are out of my budget. So I go for a blank one, that way, I can at least have the doll. If I had the funds, I’d get a fullset every time. Not having the fullset doesn’t bother me at all, as the doll is what is most important. Only one of my of my bjds is a fullset, while a few have the company face ups. My dream is someday, I’ll be able to go all out and get the fullset with ALL the options.
Blank dolls despite fullsets are very very beautiful -- I love looking at them. I buy dolls to make specific characters, so fullset wouldn't do. My plans are pretty long-term. Impulsive buys aren't my cup of tea for this reason. Money are also factor, but if I really want something I have no problem to vait and save. I would buy fullset as long as the styling is exactly what I needed.
Haha! Right now I have Ine & Carol. I have Rens & Eva but I sold their original bodies and ordered new full bust ones. I have Cygne arriving next week. I have Rendia's full set outfit and wings so I'll be buying her head & body eventually. Only other full set girl I'm looking for is Momo^^
If I am drawn to the doll because I like the fullset, I will get the fullset, and sometimes the dolls I like can only be ordered as fullsets (in the case of my Trinity it was a case of picking the fullset I wanted). But if I have an idea for the doll that doesn't match with the fullset, I don't get the fullset, or I only get the parts of the fullset I like, if that's an option. When I got my Soom Sabik, the doll's wig and faceup perfectly matched the character I wanted him for, so I got them, but I didn't buy his outfit or eyes because I didn't need them. When I got my Yuki, I ordered her with the default eyes and wig, but not the outfit or faceup because I had a different idea for her, and I ordered my Corun completely blank because I wanted to get him very heavily modded, and he now looks nothing like the fullset doll at all.
I definitely prefer blank. I do have 2 fullset dolls, and they're not quite as fun as blank ones. You skip the fun part- though I did switch the wig on one of them and I like her a lot more now. I like the companies that let you buy the outfit but not necessarily have a face up. Because I wouldn't mind that. I feel guilty wiping a company face up (especially from a fullset), but I like some of the outfits and would like them for other dolls.
I wish it was easier sometimes to pick and choose parts of Fullsets. Like sometimes I just want the outfit or wig but you can hardly buy those separate. Or just the wig and eyes or so on:
Blank. I love crafting & customising, even the bits I buy (clothes, shoes) are fun to shop for! I wouldn’t rule out buying a full set if I really loved it, though.
I’ve bought a lot of blank dolls, but I find as I become busier with life I prefer full sets. I just don’t have the time I used to have to devote to getting a dolls look just right. Luckily I have a very specific look I like so I’m not out there buying up all kinds of full sets haha.
My first doll was a full set- and I almost immediately got her different hair and clothes- so probably no more full sets unless everything perfectly suits the character or the full set comes with exclusive items I want. There are some absolutely gorgeous full sets out there- so this will happen at some point. My second doll just had the factory face-up- same with my third who won’t be arriving for months... I’m considering ordering a blank doll with my tax return- and try my hand at doing a face up... If it’s something I can get into, I’ll probably shift over to mainly blank dolls.
Blank!! Fullsets remind me too much of American Girl dolls or Barbies. To me, the whole appeal of these dolls is that they are a blank canvas to be customized. Now, that being said, there have been a couple of Dollmore Alexia and Lusion fullsets I've completely fallen in love with and would have bought if they hadn't been out of my price range, so.
It just depends. So far I’ve only bought full sets but the reason for that is because I love the face skulp, body skulp, with the clothing and I feel that is rlly goes well with the plans I wanted for my dolls. But in the future I’m definitely not gonna buy fullsets all the time. All long as it has a face up it’s fine. So it just depends if I like the full set or not.
Blank, no question! Fullsets are totally worthless to me... If I didn't paint and design a doll, it looks terribly creepy and unsettling to me. The only "pre-designed" dolls I have any patience for are Living Dead Dolls, lol I could see wanting the clothes or wig from a fullset, maybe, but never the true full set.
I much prefer to buy blank dolls so I can truly make them my own. That said though, I do have two full set dolls, but that was because they were not available outside of that option.
I prefer blank dolls, but full sets have their advantages. What I like about a full set doll is that it's already styled, you don't have to hunt for clothes or wigs, and the faceup will be perfect and professional.
Blank, Most of the time the fullsets don't fit my style, they're really expensive and I prefer to sew my own or buy individual pieces.
I prefer blank. That way I can personalize their look. I have two fullset dolls, one because that's the only way they were sold, and the other for the extra parts they came with. I have company face-ups on some of my dolls. I love crafting for my dolls, so sewing them clothes is a big part of working on them. I'm learning to do my own face-ups so many of my blank dolls have eyes and a wig, but are still blank.
I've bought dolls in both states... Sometimes I really like the company face-up (That's particularly true of my Volks one-offs) and sometimes I don't. It's a very case-by-case kind of thing, and more about the look than the price. I find that I never keep full-sets in their original outfits or wigs, though, and I only rarely use their original eyes. I do keep all of those bits, and occasionally they'll end up seeing use with another member of the crew, but so far none of my full set dolls have stayed in original full set form.
I’m 50/50 on this! I love getting a dolls fullset if it fits perfectly with the design and company faceup, but I also enjoy taking a blank doll and making it into something original!
I usually prefer full sets unless I have a character I am trying to buy fro and the full set (primarily the faceup) does not suit what I want. I am not a faceup artist and I hate sending dolls away to get painted; I have done it twice and it causes me great anxiety. I prefer that the faceup is done for me by the company so that when the doll arrives, it is ready to go; never has to leave my side again. I also like full sets because they come with clothes, a wig, and shoes right off the bat. It gives me a bit more time to buy things for them and all the fullsets I have purchased are gorgeous and I always find a use for.
I can go either way. Fullsets are expensive, but putting a doll together can also be costly if I don’t make everything myself. It can be a hard call. The drawback to fullsets is that my doll will probably look like someone else’s and that can feel odd. But the benefit for me is that at least I have clothes that I like and that will fit. With time, I usually end up switching things around anyway.
Blank alllll the wayyyy. However I do purchase pieces of fullsets second hand that can go wirh certain dolls.
Blank dolls are the only ones for me. I prefer to paint my own dolls and usually have a different idea of what I want for outfits. That said I do love seeing the fullsets, they can often be great inspiration.
I feel the need to post again to say that the thing that first made me start considering buying the Dr. Strange doll from IoS was the shoes. So I bought a $2000+ fullset for the sake of a pair of boots with tassels. They will be much loved.
It depends on the doll. On the one hand, I want to shell my own characters, so obviously it's better to get those dolls blank. On the other hand, I do end up falling in love with some fullsets and so I have to get them and just make a character around them. Even when it's a fullset, though, I do like to have other outfits/wigs for them; for example, my Qinzhe and Meng He have casual outfits in addition to their fancy fullset getups and I'm hoping to give my Ashford EVO a lot of different looks, considering he's supposed to be a master of illusion magic.
I have ordered four BJD's and all but one was the full set as I just fell in love with the whole package, and had Christmas and birthday cash to spend. However as I get myself more outfits for my dolls will more than likely buy blank.
I would love to buy a full-set, but usually the blank doll is expensive enough for me and so far I never managed to buy a Doll at its inital release (Except for my Purchases at LDoll)
I am not shelling characters, so if I really like a full-set, I'll go for it! Sometimes I really like how the designers put a doll together.
I'm not opposed to buying a fullset; I've yet to see a fullset that I really wanted. They're beautiful, but I haven't seen one that speaks to me with regards to potential character. I like customizing the look of my dolls anyway. I do sometimes buy the factory faceup depending on price and look.
Definitely blank. I usually want to customize my BJDs so it’s not usually worth it to me to pay for a faceup and outfit. That said, I do have a ton of default face ups. *Shrug*
Blank. Because I like having my dolls more customizable. I rather hire somebody to do the face up or try to do the face up myself . Just so I have a doll thats a little more unique and suits me. Its a different experience to have a factory face verse a custom and the feeling of completing a custom doll feels more amazing to me. Im definitely more bonded to my custom dolls as well. To be honest though ive never seen a full set I was drawn to.
It's depending on the face up and cloths. I prefer full set because I am not in a confidence place to get everything done. It might go experience, and I am still learning. However, some times the offical faceup is not my style, but If I really like the doll. I will consider blank. ( hope I can do a better faceup, so I can go balnk hahahahha)
Usually fullset for myself. I don't like to buy clothes not knowing if they'd fit correctly so having a doll come with clothes is a big yes for me.
I tend to prefer blank, with out any painting even. But there have been a few exceptions so far. Mainly a faceup or two that I liked factory. The one doll with complete fullset I am buying is the DC Lydia. Literally everything about her is fab, if I do decide to switch her to one of my ocs I can see other dolls using her clothing items. So it doesnt seem like a waste. I can see why some people prefer them, or having blushing/faceup. I just mainly love doing it myself.
I shell characters and I like doing things myself so I've never bought a full-set doll. I have one second-hand head that came with a face-up, but it wasn't by the company so that's not even close to counting. I have 'buy a full set doll' on my bucket list. I likely won't associate a character with it and I'll treat it much like I do my porcelain dolls - something to display and not touch - a very different rule compared to my character dolls.
I go for blank, as for me it is working on dolls and discovering how different they can look matters. I admit I was tempted to go for a fullset once (Souldoll Lavi), but then I thought that I can just admire the fullset idea on the company's website pics whenever I want anyway... I know it would not work like that for everyone, but it works for me! I have to actually correct myself - I do have a fullset of the Ghost in the Shell Gynoid, but I always treated her a little differently from my other BJDs and getting her as a fullset was pretty much the only option.
