Do you prefer full set or blank ?

Feb 12, 2019

    1. I'm more into fullset actually, but I like so many dolls and sculpts which doesn't have one ... I'll definitively buy some of them, it's a sure thing!
But, when you start in the hobby, I think it's more easy to have fullset to play with your dolls directly, I presume.

    2. I prefer full sets. It’s so hard sometimes trying to find that right outfit or wig and then to try styling it all. Making sure it’ll look right. Then trying to find a good artist that’ll do it right. Exhausting.

    3. It depends on the doll. I recently bought a fullset doll because she was available NOW, and I thought she was gorgeous. I am glad I did because I was going to wait for the preorder but that sold out in minutes and I would have gotten nothing. I would go for a fullset only if I loved everything about it. If it is an outfit I don't care much for and will never use I would just get them without but with a faceup if possible because I do prefer that over full blank.

    4. I love blank doll because I do my doll faceup. But I would also go for clothing and shoes if they are something I want. Lately, limited quantity and time ordering period are killing me. LOL

    5. I prefer blank dolls over full sets. Usually when I buy dolls, it's with the intent of shelling my OCs, so I already have a very particular way I want to style the doll that a company full set most likely isn't going to match.
Plus, some full sets are so elaborate and gorgeous that I feel like if I had them, it would be a waste to not display the doll as intended with their factory wig, clothes, and accessories, or to wipe their faceup if I ever got bored of it... but at the same time I like to play around with my dolls and change up their looks, and not feel "bound" to just one thing.

Maybe one day if I ever have the money to spare and stumble upon the perfect full set that I absolutely adore, I'd splurge and keep the doll on display, as a more decorative piece versus my character dolls. For now, though, I'm happy with blank dolls!

    6. I wouldn't ever get a fullset unless the oc would fit with the clothes. I want to avoid having dolls with the same body so sharing clothes is tricky. Plus the face up would need to be removed, and that would be annoying if I needed to dye them.

    7. Ooh, this is a tough question. I think I generally prefer full sets. It's ridiculously hard for me sometimes to find a wig that I like and clothes that really match, plus I'm still rather new to the hobby so it's a bit of a relief to have things that should already fit my doll and look good (plus, I don't have to figure out shoes. Hooray!). Of course, there are always exceptions to this - I've got a couple dolls who have gorgeous face-ups or body mods that really struck me as unique and therefore I couldn't pass them up, but I definitely have more trouble getting clothes for them...

    8. I prefer blanks. I don't think I have ever seen a full set that I would _really_ want to have. There has been always some part of it that feels a bit "meh" so I don't think it's worth it in my case :)

    9. I prefer full sets, because I don't think my shaky hands and general lack of skill will let me do faceups. I am debating getting a blank doll and trying to find someone to commission to do a faceup and body blush. But I've never mailed off something like that which is a little scary, and not sure how hard it will be to find someone to do what I want. I've checked a few artists on etsy and insta, but the doll I'd want customized is anthro and I haven't seen anyone taking commission for anthros yet, and I'd like to see the work they do on the noses/mouth/paws/whatnot beforehand. This lack of options tempts me to try it, then I look at eyebrows and eyelashes on dolls I have and I remember... yeah no way I can do that LOL. So we'll see

    10. Definitely blank!! For me the fun really lies in making it my own. Having a fullset for me would just mean stripping away everything I don't like and customizing it anyway - and because they are so precious to many people I usually don't do it because I would feel bad.

    11. I'm definitely a blank kind of person! I have such a hard time bonding with fullsets and they're usually the dolls I do the least with. I think I just have a hard time putting my personal spin on an already "complete" doll as opposed to getting a blank canvas and working my way up with it.

    12. As has been said, full sets can be absolutely beautiful, but so far I haven't seen one that I would be willing to pay the amount they are worth for. I think because the idea for the doll i want doesn't fit with the trends, and so even if I liked the sculpt I wouldn't gravitate to the outfit or vice-versa.

    13. I usually go for blank, but there are certain full sets out there that are the reason I like that particular doll.

    14. I sometimes prefer to buy fullsets, mostly because I love all the accessories the dolls come with. Rarely do my dolls actually ever wear their fullset outfits but I love taking pieces and parts of it. I never really see a downside to the fullset (outside the price) because then I don't need to rush to do the faceup, and the doll won't sit around naked while they wait for me to make them clothes. There's also some dolls that I just adore the company faceups for, like my fairyland Ingrid and Luha. I make custom wigs, clothes, and eyes for my dolls, as well as loving mods and doing face ups and body blushing myself but there's a certain point where I know I'm just too busy to do it all. I'm kinda in the mindset of, if I don't have to do it myself and I won't enjoy doing it, why not buy something I already love. I also have the benefit of I consider my dolls a heavy AU of my comic's universe so I prefer everyone wearing more casual clothes.

    15. I prefer blank dolls, just because sewing for them is half the fun for me. Also, very few companies/artists do fullsets in my preferred aesthetics (historical or historically-inspired fantasy), so I've never seen the point of spending the extra money when it's not what I really want.

    16. full sets are not worth for me because of the place i live also blank gives u a greater degree of custumazation and creativity, i am more of the type who would comision a faceup and clothes rather than buy from the company because i tend have my ideas come in to reality, not to mention i can take it on my own paste and buget

    17. Ah I think it would really depend on the set, but I actually recently placed an order for a full set even though I don't care for the set. It was only because there was an event head for the full set that I really liked so I'm hoping someone will want the set, once it arrives!

    18. Full sets can be really beautiful, but I definitely prefer to buy them blank, both for budget reasons and because they'll feel more unique when they're done. Fullsets feel a little bit like idk, like they have this whole character attached and it's cool, but I think I prefer to have my own unique thing!

    19. I prefer blanks. I agree with the sentiment that fullset dolls have their own character attached already! Additionally, my personal aesthetic when it comes to faceups is a little bit different from most companies' faceup aesthetics (not knocking them, my taste is just weird lol) so I'm almost always commissioning custom faceups from independent artists anyway.

    20. I do find full-sets to be pretty, but I prefer blank dolls. The dolls I get are for specific characters, and I find sculpts to fit them so any full-set does nothing for me. I would be spending extra for a face-up just to spend more to have it wiped. If I like the accessories they have on the full set, then I'll buy those separately or second-hand.

    21. I think fullsets can be gorgeous, but unless one really lines up with my character plans... blank. I'd rather put together a wardrobe, find the right wig... With some of my dolls, I have ordered them with faceup-- sometimes the company faceup really fits what I want, even when a fullset wouldn't. But, I'm openminded to the idea that I could fall in love with a fullset doll, and either feel like every part of it was something I wanted for the character they were supposed to embody, or feel like every part of it would fit one of my dolls if I split outfit/shoes/jewelry/wig between some of them.

In fact, in my 'doll plans' word doc, when there's an outfit set that I like, I make note of which wardrobe pieces 'belong' to which character, or if it's just something I like that any of them could wear depending. Sometimes I think the whole outfit belongs together, but other times I can see a dress on one doll but the jewelry going to another, or a jacket that suits one but jeans that would go to someone else.

    22. I always got blank because I like to customize. But lately I found three fullsets I absolutely loved. Though the 2 most recent I plan to swap out wigs and eyes.

    23. I like full sets especially if they’re in a series so that if and when I can get a whole set, they would complete each other. Sadly to say that I’ll probably never get to complete a series but at least having a few dolls from the same series can make it that much closer.

    24. Blank, the process of creating your own personal doll is beautiful. Although I do have a fullset doll, my Doll Chateau Larry who is a tiny little snail doll who I fell in love with because of the body paint and faceup.

    25. I only own two fullset doll, which is my DC Charon and my Pipos Baby Cheshire Valentine but that's only because thw fullset was either very little difference in the case of Valentine or in Andromeda's caseq, checked all of the boxes I would have wanted for her if I'd purchased her blank. I did also buy some of my Doll Love Kaja Vish's fullset when I got him but that was mostly just to avoid having a bald naked dolly hanging around.
As it was I'd made him a new wig within like the first week or so and I can't remember when he last wore his stock shirt or pants. About the only things that haven't been changed is the paint on his face and his underwear.
All of my other dolls have been if not blank, wigged and/or clothed by me. Whether I've purchased or made these items myself varies by doll.

    26. It depends on how badly you want the clothes (and the doll). I have always bought my dolls blank except for one--LittleFee Cygne as Little Witch fullset just looked so amazing, both clothes and doll. I know a lot of people prefer to customize their dolls to do something completely different so sometimes I feel a bit unoriginal for keeping her as a fullset, but honestly, she's amazing as is. I wish I could find more wispy raggedy clothes in that style; more medieval/fantasy stuff.

    27. Blank, you get to use your creativity to make your doll unique that way :)

    28. I own two fullsets, my third doll came as a blank with faceup and the one I am ordering will be a blank (hybrid) with faceup.

IMO, a fullset is only worth it if you LOVE the outfit and can see it is worth the extra money (in the case of my first doll) or if the doll is second hand and you can't split it (in the case of my second doll).

Unless those conditions are met, I think I do prefer blank. An outfit that is "close enough" to your expectations will never satisfy you. Besides, even if you don't sew, nowadays there are so much talented artists to commission from for something that may be a better match.

    29. I prefer fullsets, but they are so expensive. For blank, to get a faceup is really a long wait and the result may be not what you want.

    30. I think that almost all companies are getting better and better at their make up so I'm choosing fullsets

    31. Fullset no doubt.
I will only buy a blank doll if I really like it and only blank dolls are sold. I feel buying blank and customizing is way more expensive on the long run and I never really find the parts I really want. That said the faceup is what stresses me out the most. I can’t do it myself and I’ll never bound with something that I’ve made myself. The good artists are always so busy it’s also hard to commission anyone.
I think with so much wait and search I’ll just end up giving up at some point.
So far I’ve got 3 blank dolls and all of them were reeeelly not fun and it was a hard journey for me. I want to take a long break from blanks. I really admire people who like blanks and do all themselves, wish I could be more like that.

    32. Blank, I usually make everything for my dolls so I usually also don't likd to even have a face-up, just all blank.

    33. Depends. I don't have characters to shell so if I really like the outfit I will get it. If I really like the faceup and I think would be hard or too much trouble to give it a faceup (I can do faceups, but my style isn’t the same as other artists), I would probably get the faceup too. Souldoll and Angell Studio are the only companies I will currently consider getting a faceup from. Their artists are impeccable!

    34. Hmmm. I've only ever bought 2 fullsets. I've bought parts of fullsets, but other than my big girl (Trinity Klaire) and a tiny one (Tiny delf Kai, incubus) i haven't bought fulsets. I sold my small tiny delf and Trinity Klaire came as a fullset. Otherwise it's mostly a pick and choose thing.
I have to admit that the ones i have now, none of them have company faces anymore. (Other than Trinity Klaire, but i don't have her physically yet) But i also get no real use out of blank dolls, so i often only get a blank doll if i know i have someone who can give them a face or with a face-up i really like. :) (Either custom or company made)

    35. Present Me is very much into fullset dolls that fit my particular brand of aesthetics. I would love to fully customize a blank doll, but alas, I currently don't have the space and proper equipment to commit to the craft.:( So I stick to fullsets that I like to do most of the hard work for me, haha. I hope to get started on doing face-ups one day when the timing/space is right, and slowly work my way up into a fully customized doll of my own.

    36. Fullsets or with a company faceup. Changing clothes, eyes and wigs is enough customizing for me!

    37. Fullsets , I like the character as a whole. I appreciate the companies ideas and how it it presented.

    38. Always blank for me. I wouldn’t be opposed to a fullset, but I have never come across one I liked enough to want to order it.

    39. I've never bought a full set just because of the price. I would absolutely love to own an artist's full vision of the doll. Someday...

    40. I always want to customize my dolls more but can't bring myself to wipe a faceup I haven't done myself so I want to avoid buying more fullsets. I also usually don't care for the outfits that come with fullsets so it's extra silly of me to buy them, but if it's a character doll, fullset is non negotiable!

    41. Yes, absolutely. I am not an artist and my imagination is not as good as professional doll authors. I love their creations!

I wonder...is a doll more valuable if it's the artist's full set or does that matter? I guess it would depend on the buyer.

    42. As far as i've understood, original face-up and all items of a fullset is worth more than only parts. But if its an old fullset face-up is less important since it would've faded alot.

    43. Oh, I didn't realize that the faceups fade. How long does that take, years or decades? If you know.

    44. I have a good sized collection of nearly 50 dolls and have had many of them for well over a decade. None of mine, either with my own or various company faceups, have ever shown evidence of fading. So I don’t believe fading is inevitable…at least it hasn’t happened in my own collection. I hope this reassures you.:)

    45. It depends on the materials used. My first boys face-up looked good for a couple of years, but then it was as if the edges got a bit fuzzy and the colours changed a bit. It's been a while since he's had a face-up made, and he's starting to need a new one.
Often there' s also slight damage to the face-up, like the msc gets chipped off over time.

    46. So good to know! I have some Barbie dolls from the sixties whose parts are discolored, some more than others. It seems like Barbies last a long time. I'll have to be careful!

Yes, thank you so much! I don't keep any of my dolls in direct sunlight. I only have one BJD, but the Barbies and Fashion Royalty dolls seem to be holding up fine. My BJD is getting a new faceup and body blushing right now. I can't wait to get her back! You do your own faceups? Are you an artist that does commissions?

Wow, your dolls are extraordinary! I'm so impressed!

    47. I am not sure. I would think things like how unique the doll is and quality of the face up. I'm pretty confident that if I suddenly decided to sell my Sandor Clegane or Beric Dondarrion I could get what I have in them but they're both extremely customized dolls.

    48. I love fullsets most of the time because finding faceup artists with open slots is challenging.

    49. So true.

    50. I stared out only preferring full sets but as I get further into the hobby I'm finding myself favoring blank dolls more. I like that you can take a sculpt and make it completely different then everyone else look wise.

    51. Full sets have no appeal to me. I want to create my own character for a doll, and choosing the clothes, wig, eyes etc. are part of what I really enjoy doing. I even enjoy if it is an ongoing projects, where the doll comes together little by little. Its like a treasure hunt. If a doll came completely done, I would not enjoy it.

Faceups however are the exception. I don't do my own, and so I usually buy dolls with company faceups but no clothing etc.

    52. If the full set is cheep I'll get it, but blank normally

    53. I don't prefer a full set, as I like to style them myself. But I do want them to already have a faceup.

    54. Never had a full-set, but I've often gone with dolls with default face-ups if I love them enough or feel they'll fit the character intended for the doll. It generally saves time later, and I can immediately get down to dressing them and finding the right wig and/or eyes when they arrive.

But, saying that, I have started to buy more blank dolls or heads, as the general sculpt works for a character but their company face-up doesn't. I tend to look for blank pictures, too, to help decide if a sculpt is right. And, sometimes, the face-up doesn't look quite like the promo shots.

    55. I prefer face-ups but not full sets if I have the choice. Seeing as how I'm only just now getting my first full set, that may change!

    56. I prefer casual clothes so most full sets don't appeal to me. But I want a faceup, because I do not trust myself with that. I ruined several monster highs that way

    57. I like the idea of fullsets from the perspective of, you have an outfit lined up out of the box and don't have to worry (usually lol) about the possibility of stuff not fitting and having to trawl around for wigs/shoes/clothes etc but I like the freedom of being able to assign my own personality to the doll, whereas I feel like fullsets it's kind of decided for you a bit. Not to say that you can't just take what thye give you and build something on top of it, but having a firm foundation makes the outcomes feel a little narrower I guess

    58. For me it depends on what I plan to do with the doll. Mostly I prefer blank dolls so I can shell characters, but sometimes a fullset catches my eye and I can't resist. The fullset doll never stays in their original set full time though. To me if you don't change their look occasionally its no different than having a fashion doll that's on display (not that there is anything wrong with that - I have those too).

    59. I do find the full sets super beautiful too! However I like blank better and work on the dolls myself. It’s great for bonding, creativity and overall also I found sometimes that I didn’t like the clothing quality or the face up was a little on the very simple side. And the hundreds dollars more don’t seem as worth it to me anymore. I prefer blank and rather invest the money saved into accessories, and materials from shops/artist I adore :)

    60. Full set if the budget permits and so I do not have to worry about the faceup and clothes.
