Do you have any damage on your dolls?

Sep 3, 2017

    1. Yes I bumped my DC Bella on the glass door of the cabinet and she has a spot in her sealer. I'm not planning on selling her and so it doesn't really matter. I also had a connector in the hand of one of my dolls break from the force of the strings. I went to pick her up and her hand was laying next to her. I was very upset but it forced me to learn to restring the fingers in the hand and fashion a replacement ring.

    2. There is one gash inside my DearSD Una's head from when I was prying her eyes out...you can't see it and it really does not cause any issues but I know it's there and feel bad for her:sorry

    3. I'm kinda rough when it comes to posing, so there's always dents at the joint. I forget how soft resin can be!

    4. My DC Hillary has a broken ear from dropping the head in the sink while cleaning it for a faceup.
My doll family Angel's chest is... Kinda ruined lol. I had done additive mods to give it boobs, and then later removed them with a scalpel like a barbarian (wrong way to do it I know, but I was depressed and frustrated). I'll probably try to even that out someday though.
And not my doll, but I dropped the sword of my partner's souldoll and it broken in half... And also the very tip broke and was never found again orz

    5. I rubbed the blushing off the ears of my best boy by pulling his face-mask on and off too many times, lol. This same boy I stained his nose red when putting up a freshly painted mask to check it against his face, and somehow got paint on him. Had to take a Magic Eraser to his nose and I THINK it's fixed, though it looks a little pink some days...

    6. Yes it’s a weird dye spots on the head cap when I was dying the head but I didn’t like the color I was getting. I removed the dye on the whole thing besides those two spots thankfully I can hide it with a wig so you can’t see it but it still bugs me. A few people told me to try and use a magic eraser or hand sand it. I’ll have to see if it works when I have the time

    7. Some of their makeup is broken but all of good shape.

    8. My Nono has a small scratch in her faceup but I don’t want to remove it and do a new one as it’s her original volks faceup! For her age though she mostly looks good :3nodding:

    9. Mika's head is stained + damaged from various customization misadventures, mostly from the process of trying to attach her to a resin body. Franz's head has also been damaged in a way I don't really understand re: brush cleaner and dye repelling each other but I'm so attached to his character that I can't imagine myself ever selling the head.

    10. Yes, but they're mostly little scratches inside the joints due to restringing and such and are not really noticeable.

    11. Well, a doll I ordered from Mandarake was mistakenly not packaged correctly, and two fingers broke off. It was sad, but they glued back on.

I assume that all of my dolls have damage, though. My biggest frustration with S-hooks is that they scratch the resin around the joints, so just about all of my joints have tiny pits or scratched from the S-hooks. Some not-so-tiny. I like to swap around heads, hands, and feet from different companies to see what fits who - and it seems like no matter how careful I am, something gets scratched. Sigh. You'd think after 20 years, they would have come up with some sort of joint protection...

    12. While trying to hook heeled feet onto my SD girl, I chipped her ankle, its minuscule and not even noticeable...but it serves as a reminder to not use chopsticks next time...I need to get a hook o_o"

    13. Other than some mildly chipped or rubbed sealant, no damage that I know of! I'm protective of my dolls to the point that I rarely take them out of their boxes :sweat I'm working on building some courage to take them out more but the fear of damaging them is so strong.

    14. I’ve got chipped face-ups galore over here lol. I had to re-attach three of my Luts centaur’s fingers after he fell over. My Dream Valley Scar also lost a few fingers after I accidentally dropped his own head own his body. My Resinsoul Mei has several bite marks from my cat who has since passed on, so I treasure those damaged hands now.

    15. I've chipped a lot of noses and lost a few fingers. :blush

    17. My grail has uneven yellowing due to me being a derp and not realizing the sun was hitting her from the angle she was at. :sweat

    18. Yes faceup. But I see faceup as consumable. I want to take my doll ,with me, take pictures and have fun with my dolls. When the faceup gets worn out, I let a faceup artist repaint. This only applies to my own dolls I am always very careful with other people's dolls so they are not harmed.

    19. Most of my dolls are secondhand and some do have some stubborn stains, uneven yellowing, and very slight scratches that I couldn't remove, but other than that, everyone is in pretty good shape despite a few mishaps here and there by me. If it's faceup damage, some are faded or chipped, but nothing too bad that makes me want to remove it.

    20. My first doll has a crack under the corner of his eye because I had put too much pressure on it the first time tried putting his head onto the body *_*

Luckly you can't see it at all, because of his faceup, but I can still feel the crack when I run my finger over the spot.

    21. My Doll Leaves Ida has damage from her own s-hook in her wrist. It's a tiny chip, hardly able to see unless you know where it is. But it made me so sad/scared to make it worse when it happened! I was posing her when I first got her and pushed her hand too far I guess. the very edge of the s-hook knicked the wrist. I have never sanded or touched it since because I'm scared to make it worse! Thankfully, no other damage (so far! :|)

    22. I actually think having a little bit of damage gives a doll personality. :XD:
My Dust of Dolls Zouh Spun is my grail doll, but she came with a pretty bad breakage of the top of the ear. Previous owner resculpted it with epoxy. That being said, I’m very protective of how I handle her. Not necessarily for resale value, but because if I damage her I wouldn’t know how to fix her. BJD have never been kids toys to me, more like art pieces so I treat them as such.

    23. My yosd Dollzone Luna had a finger eaten by a stray kitten I brought into my home.:sweat (This was many years ago and that naughty kitten and the doll are still here, by the way.) Fortunately, he never did anything like that ever again. But I creatively bandaged her hand for awhile (she was in a limited resin color so a replacement was not an option.) But I eventually found a pair of white hands on the second-hand market and was able to blush them to match. And I recently had a doll take a tumble off the kitchen counter onto the stainless steel dog food bowls while I was in the process of sewing for her. Even her faceup escaped unscathed fortunately. But these dolls are quite sturdy I’ve found, and as my special characters they get used and enjoyed on a regular basis with no ill effects. I’ve found that any problems that might arise can be easily remedied with a bit of care, creativity, and common sense, and it just adds to the enjoyment. I’ve been collecting BJDs for many, many years and have 50-ish dolls, and all are in wonderful condition to this day.:)

    24. My DoDollsDream Teacup Maggie had a small accident 2 days after I received her and it was a horrific experience. She has a faceup by PauliAnne, so it was quite devastating. I'm super embarrassed about it, but I've grown to embrace her flaws and hopefully one day get it fixed. It isn't huge damage, but I feel like I destroyed a piece of art.

    25. Yes.
My one dolls fingers snapped after falling. Was nerve wracking and annoying.

I take great care and am overly protective of my dolls but mistakes happen and over time things can wear.

That however was my one moment of the middle finger. I'm still debating which hands to buy. :XD:

    26. I've been really lucky to have not broken any of them, I am not the most careful person when it comes to handling my dolls. With as many times that I have accidentally dropped them or had them fly out of my hands while attempting to put a head back on or string them I am surprised that none of them have gotten damage. It's a good thing that they are more resilient then they look.

    27. I can't say is a big damage as such but something broken is broken. I kept wondering if I would order another Ringdoll with a 68cm body, body 04, and I began to try various poses with the body of my precious Xie Lian. When I started to see the limits of the torso divided into three parts, I heard a click, and a little piece of resin rolled on the floor :horror: I was scared that I could have broken some device of the body that keeps the torso in a certain position, but it wasn't that but a small tumult where the elastic of the...cucumber is held... so now is totally..loose, is not such a big deal because I can just untie the elastic and adjust it so it sits tight again without the need for that little device, It is ironic because of one thing that is mentioned in the book where this character comes from but I will not go into details
I think it's something positive because it took away my fear of touching my first BJD, and if I get to have another Ringdoll with this body, I'll be prepared.

    28. I'm new to the hobby and working on a budget, so the only dolls I've had delivered so far are secondhand ones I've bought, even though I have some preordered. My Honey Delf Madeleine came with staining that I was able to patch up and has some minor scuffing, but is otherwise fine.

The second one, a 1/6 MYOU Delia, is in a sorry but manageable state. She arrived to me with uneven yellowing, a lot of scuff marks and scratches, a smudged face-up, damaged eyelashes and so on. I knew before getting her that she was a bit rough, so I've turned her into a project doll that I intend to fix up over time and try to make my own! I'm also not that fussy about damage so long as it's not on the face. It gives a little character, and I'm hoping that once Delia's all patched up, she'll be that much more special to me because I put in the work.

    29. Most of my dolls are second-hand, so I have my fair share of worn faceups, yellowing, staining and peeling MSC coating on their bodies.
I just need the time and tools to unstring most of them for a proper clean, plus I've ordered a practice head so I can learn to do faceups.
I often wonder about the history of my dolls, especially the ones from Japan where I haven't directly spoken to the sellers...their wear and tear are marks of their history for me.

    30. Augh, yes. My rarest doll, tan Cecile the Scarface, is the only doll I've ever had fall directly onto his face from several feet up. His Volks stand wasn't properly gripped and he fell out of the display stand right onto his face. The damage was minimal, the tag on the back of his head popped off, but was easily glued back on, the real issue was right on the bottom of his scar was a huge black scuff. In order to remove the scuff, I had to remove part of his faceup, which broke my heart a little. His default faceup was part of the reason I fell in love with the doll, so having it damaged was so disappointing.

My Migidoll Ryu has some stains on his faceup from black glasses frames and some staining on his body from black clothes and gloves. His wrists are a bit chipped from using various utensils to hold the S hooks when he was restrung.

My Soom Mylo has chipping on her rabbit feet blushing, but that's to be expected, with the way the joints rub together. Over the years she has also mellowed to a lovely yellow color, which actually fits with her character, as it makes her seem a bit more antique. I think the yellowing on her is the most noticeable on her because she's WS, instead of the NS and tan my other dolls are.

    31. I’m not terribly precious with my crew but I don’t throw them around either. I have a mix of new and secondhand dolls. Excluding minor things like faceup dings, I have 3 damages that I would not consider minor.

I chipped one of my Elfdoll Soah’s shin just at the ankle when I was trying to unstring her. It bothered me for a minute but she wears socks, problem solved.

I purchased my Narae from the DoA Marketplace with disclosed yellowing. It doesn’t bother me or her. She’s mostly covered up and the yellowing isn’t visible.

My Volks F34, another Marketplace purchase, came to me with a disclosed chip in her forehead when the poor dear fell off a shelf during a hurricane. I haven’t tried to repair it. She wears a wig with bangs and you can’t see the damage.

    32. My first ever doll has same staining on his headcap from his wig, some damage on his ears from when I attempted to mod them (very shoddily) that has since been removed with a Dremel by my girlfriend, and some wear around his ankle joints from age and time, but these things are barely damages to me. You can't see the top of his head cap and his wig does cover his ears mostly (and they do look very good considering what they did look like) and he has never been good poser or stander so at the moment his ankles are fine.
My 1/3 girl has a TINY little chip on her wrist from when i was replacing her hands and the elastic sprang back... it's pretty much invisible.
I think all of these damages are because of time and love, and don't bother me. Nothing major. I've never broken anything.

    33. I'm probably not as careful as I should be with my crew...I'm bad about touching their faces, lol - most of mine have shiny chins and noses from me adjusting their heads.

As far as damage, I've got two with broken fingers (one broke in shipping and the other when something fell off a higher shelf and landed on her), one with a broken ankle (stringing was too tight when he was shipped to me), and one with a chipped wrist (not sure how that one happened).

    34. Dealing with elastic for the first time was interesting..

    35. My Resinsoul Lan is missing two whole fingers. They broke pretty early on in having her, but I just really don’t feel like getting a whole new hand.
It wasn’t even anything scary like a drop or anything they just kinda broke off while posing her. Her hands have been wonky from the get-go unfortunately.

My Dolkot Abel has a chip in his hip from the previous owner, so no idea how that happened. I assume wear and tear as he’s pretty old.

    36. Thought I would add a few more things I've learned:
Dollmore bodies, especially around the joints, are very fragile, and the resin appears to be particularly soft. There are chips around the bottoms of the ankle joints of my Model F body from the raised ledges on the heel feet. When restringing, I saw the S hook buried itself deep into the neck opening, so I threw in a 5 mm grommet ring to protect the neck.
So at least with Dollmore bodies, I keep the stringing a little on the looser side.
The back of the knee joint on my Dollmore Trinity Alicia has a decent size chunk of resin missing, too. Dollmore Abby said that if I send pictures of the body (and the damaged knee), Dollmore will make a new leg for me. I would have to pay for this, of course, but it is an option. I'm going to try filling in the missing section with some Apoxie Sculpt and painting with acrylics to match.
My Dream Valley Rita Mantitaur (first edition) is strung so tightly that if I don't first pull the leg out of the joint before moving it, tiny flakes of resin will flake off like little resin snowflakes. I know how to restring her; I just haven't done it yet.
Hands with tiny fingers give me nightmares, man. I have my optional hands organized in little plastic craft organizers with bubble wrap or tissue underneath to prevent shifting/damage.

    37. My Feeple60 Cygne has a chip in her faceup after a small faceplant on my desk, thankful it didn't damage the resin itself! But now she has a chunk missing from one eyebrow lol

    38. Out of 40ish dolls my Dollzone Floy is the only one with damage (that I can remember having anyway) I had been so good for so many years with no one taking a significant catastrophic drop, but he decided to be the special one and took a tumble onto my floor when I left him to go to the bathroom and broke one of his ears and a random middle toe. Thankfully they were clean breaks so I was able to glue them back on but since he's kind of a tanish skin tone you can see the break lines. I need to invest in more doll stands lol

    39. My DD Miku has stains on the back of her shoulders. I should probably remove them, I keep saying I'll wait until it gets too bad to ignore and I guess I'm pretty good at ignoring it since she's had them for years now  I also stained her face by touching her to my shirt but it worked out for the best because I love her new face up.

I dropped one of my resin doll's heads right after getting it and a tiny bit of sealant chipped from the tip of her nose :shudder It stressed me out a lot at first but now it doesn't bother me.

In the past I bought body direct from the maker and it was damaged on arrival, the S hook for the neck was small enough to get pulled into the neck hole from the tension and took a good chunk of resin out of there :o I notice a lot of studios send bodies with a rest for the hook these days so maybe it wasn't an uncommon occurrence.

And I accidentally dyed the spare face plate of one of my first bjds ever sunburnt pink when I used colored nail polish remover to wipe it. I was told if I washed it off right away it was safe to use the colored one. but I proved that hypothesis totally wrong, and nothing would take the pink out

    40. Yes, only because I bought from a doll company and it came broken. I didn't open it on time to get a refund. Other than that no. I might have slightly messed up two of my dolls face up or it could have come that way.

      • x 1
    41. No damages yet, but in time maybe. I feel like that if you take good care of your dolls, I think it will be okay; however, it is bound to happen. I feel like sun damage is what I am scared of since they can turn yellow.

    42. When I answered this awhile back, I was BJD damage free.

Alice was the first of my dolls to get damage, she fell at a weird angle when I was posing her and one of her fingers popped right off. I fixed it back with superglue and I can't even see the break unless I look very closely. But it made me realize that a slightly broken doll is not that bad at all.

Lately, I've been buying slightly damaged dolls 2nd-hand. If it's something I can fix or live with it's no longer a problem for me. I bought a doll whose finger was broken, but came with the broken finger, the finger wouldn't sit exactly right, maybe a chip got lost, so I made him a ring around the break. I also got a boy with horrible wig stains, I can't get them out and the hands are yellowed so bad they are practically orange. I have a LUTS girl with a greenish nose.

I had a doll come new with a slight ankle chip, I decided the damage was too minor to worry about. Although for the doll that came with the busted leg, I did get that replaced.

I just don't think damage on the dolls bothers me that much. I do purposeful damage when I mod them. I thought I would be upset the first time I broke off a finger on a doll, but somehow I was kind of casual about it. 'This finally happened.' and I fixed it.

Old second hand dolls that come home to me damaged have character, they have a story to tell. When I look at them I wonder what lives might have been like, and what they went through before I got them. I know they are dolls, but I'm overly imaginative, and I like to think these things.

    43. I'm not careful with my dolls at all (I love how sturdy resin is!) so minor scratches do happen sometimes, especially from S-hooks. I don't mind much, though, everything can be fixed and I'd rather not feel too precious about handling my dolls. Sometimes it's impossible to control, too - my newer soulkid body is a bit different from my older one and somehow the same S-hooks seem to scratch wrists and ankles from the inside no matter what I do. Not visible while the doll is intact but I am a bit unhappy that they updated the body and made it slightly worse for wear and tear.

Nuoyi's body came with a little scratch behind the thigh, and I later managed to scratch the other thigh with a zipper - at least they match now :sweat . I also managed to get an annoying stain on her head while finishing the faceup but it's covered by a wig at all times.

One of Dott's hands loops came off after I had received her but epoxy glue seems to hold it quite well. It doesn't fit as perfectly into the joint any more but the wrists were not so well engineered to start with. I also dropped her head with a fresh faceup so there are some minor dents in sealant under the wig area.

Both Acorn and Michi arrived to me badly stained. For Michi I painted over it and with Acorn sanded the wig stains off the head. Acorn also took a nosedive off my desk and chipped the faceup on the nose but I sealed it again and can't even tell tbh - I feel like the damage would have been more with MSC but liquitex seems to be very sturdy thankfully.

I guess dolls tend to end up a bit like the owners - I have tons of little scars from being a clumsy being so my dolls are not much worse off :sweat

    44. I purchased a lovely secondhand volks boy who came with two very very minor scratches on his facial sealant that aren't even visible unless you look at it from an extremely specific angle in the light, I was super worried it would be very visible or lead to some other complication or damage somehow but so far so good! :)

    45. I took Ciel to Dolly Day in Barcelona. She got horribly stained from this outfit. Thankfully it was mostly her legs.

I've now reversed 95% of the damage. Thankfully her legs are replaceable but in a few months she should be 100% recovered. Vinyl is a miraculous material.

Quite a lot of my collection have been stained at one time or another. It's something you get used to.

    46. Ingrid came to me damaged, as Resinsoul Mi has very delicately sculpted hands that are prone to breaking during shipping. She now has jointed hands that she wears 24/7 instead.

I have owned dolls that stained/smudged in the past, though none of those dolls are currently part of my collection.

    47. One of my girls had a finger broken years ago, I don't even remember how, but I glued it back on and it doesn't bother me too much. (I'm planning on sculpting some new hands for her anyway though, just because I can.)

Some of the others have some minor chips and scratches due to to age but I kind of just accept that this will happen. I'd rather that than keep them in pristine condition but never do anything with them,

    48. I have a lot of second hand dolls who came to me with various types of damage, from minor scratches, dents, chips, to broken fingers and hairline cracks. However, once in my care, even if I'm not the most careful in my handling at times, I've have very few incidents that resulted in damaging my dolls. I've had a couple take honestly spectacular falls and come away without a single scratch. Like when my Soom Breccia fell and slid on rough concrete. She threw her resin fox ears as well when she landed on her chest and face but...she was somehow fine? :? But when standing my most expensive doll, Volks F-38 in sunlight skin, directly in front of me on a wooden chest, with both my hands out almost hugging him for support...he slipped through my fingers and jack-knifed. He bonked his face and snapped a finger off. I wanted to cry! :atremblin His face was fine, thankfully, but his finger not so much. I've since glued it back on but it's very visible. I guess it's a good thing that I'd ordered him with extra hands but even still...Damage can happen at any time even when you're being super careful. But resin is tougher than it looks and I'm always so thankful for that!

    49. I'm still miffed about the time I was changing hands on my Soom Teenie Gem and the S-hook took a little chip out of her forearm. Always be careful when changing out hands!

    50. Gosh yes, I have two dolls with broken fingers (now glued) one 2nd hand Volks head with a deep cut that was disclosed as sealant chipping (mostly sanded away now). And because many of my dolls are old and second hand some shiny areas and faded/ chipping faceups. It will be time soon to overhaul many dolls in my collection….

    51. When I first got my 80 cm, my partner made a loud noise while the cat was near the doll, got knocked over and now has a giant scratch on the shoulder. Noticable too. I've been meaning to body blush, so I'll probably turn it into a scar, hahahaha.

    52. Eh, lessee... so far, somehow, all the dolls that have faceplanted still have their noses. Biggest damages I have are a small crack on a silicone bust (no idea how or why, but weirdly fits the character) and upon restringing a secondhand doll I discovered that her neck has a LOT of damage (again, no idea how). My first ever resin has a faded spot on his lips, and one of the vinyls has some minor staining from a pair of treacherous trousers... and my obitsu had to have both her ankles replaced.

Overall though it hasn't bothered me anywhere near as much as I thought it would. I would like to try and secure/stabilize the neck damage and maybe do something with the silicone crack, but I'm not feeling any pressure about it so eh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    53. A few of my dolls have yellowing due to age and one of my dolls has some minor scratches. But outside of that there is no major damage to them. They sit either in boxes or a glass cabinet at this point and rarely are taken out other than to take the occasional picture.

    54. Like @cobaltconduct I’m quite clumsy at times and coupled with middle-aged eyesight I don’t always notice things until I put on my glasses or I’m examining a photo I took.

Most damage has just been normal wear and tear such as mild scratches and chips around the head cap or neck from the S-hook or age related yellowing.
It’s also surprising how many dolls actually have minor chips and sanding scratches on them even when you get them brand new!

I have however had cracking and chipping appear on the fingers of Doll Chateau’s MSD jointed hands where the S-hooks are. Didn’t notice until I was looking at photos, rather disappointing considering I didn’t handle her much. That same doll also developed bad discolouration where she had been sanded by DC. She was the older NS yellow resin and suddenly after a couple of years a pale ‘bloom’ began to appear, small patches at first. They got worse and I ended up selling her as I don’t have the skills to fix such problems.

I recently had to commission a faceup for the first time as a second hand Leekeworld Mihael head I got did not like having the previous owner’s faceup removed. White patches appeared on the brow area, top of the cheeks, nose, around the mouth in a symmetrical fashion. They were smooth and shiny, not sealant residue. I tried my best to cover them up myself whilst attempting to give him a faceup but I could still see them. I was so broken hearted I contemplated selling him even though I love that sculpt so much.
Eventually though I contacted a particular faceup artist, showed them pictures of it and asked if they thought they could do anything. Thankfully they’d seen this problem before, it’s as if some older resins just suddenly lose surface pigment when in contact with the chemicals used to remove a faceup. They did an amazing job fixing the issue (which included sanding) and he’s now on his way back with a gorgeous face!

I’ve also dropped a few dolls over the years or had them fall and faceplant, usually there’s no damage to anything other than the faceup but I do think I may have some minor cracking on one of my tinies, can’t see due to his faceup but I can feel the roughness on his wee nose. I also damaged his faceup being too forceful putting in eyes.

    55. My collection is both a good chunk second hand, and decade spanning (I think my oldest is 21 by now) so I've got quite a variety of chips, yellowing, and other shenaniganery around here. Ironically, the worst damage has been on brand new dolls - Ringdoll Bast arrived with his headcap shattered (since replaced), at which point I just sort of accepted that I'd escaped any major disasters so far so this might as well happen.

The vagaries of resin are bewildering - There's been times when something should've broken (one of the Shiwoos deciding to scare the crap out of my non-bjd friend by flinging himself backwards, slamming his head on a soda can and sending his headcap flying springs to mind) and was totally fine, vs the Mystic Kids Ellis came with broken fingers despite being extremely well packaged.

I've just sort of accepted at this point that Entropy will do as it do do, and there's no doing anything about it.

    56. I've had a secondhand doll come t me with broken toes/hands. I'm planning to purchase new ones, but thankfully nothing happened to the face sculpt.

    57. My Minifee Honoka has some staining from the eyeliner of her faceup, but thankfully that is all so far. I just plan on covering it when I redo her.

    58. One of my dolls has a chip at her elbow joint due to my own mishandling :sweat But then there's also the inevitable dings from S-hooks. There might be some very minor damaged faceups (possible staining on one but I have no intention of ever wiping her), but other than that, only the one doll really had "real" damage. And that's considering that my one pukipuki fell out of a tree. Twice! And not a scratch on her.

    59. My dolls are all old and have plenty of damage. Thankfully nothing that shows too much when they're all dressed and wigged up though. I buy most of them secondhand so they came to me with damage. Stains, scratches, face-up chipped or wearing away in places. The damage on my Iplehouse girls was all me though. I threw one of them on the hard kitchen floor (I don't know how she survived it with just a scratched face-up) and the other one faceplanted in some mud, back when I was brave enough to take them outside  Poor babies.

    60. The blushing on Trent’s hands has chipped in a couple places, and two of his fingers snapped off, with the previous owner re-attaching them. I knew this when I bought him, and honestly it’s never bothered me. Probably in the extreme minority here but little flaws and blemishes are charming to me for some reason

His pinkie looks like it’s floating a bit but it’s actually been pinned with a metal rod. And rotates! For some reason…?
